8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location. Breakfast. Comfy bed. Kitchen facilities.
Cons: Shower over bath. Too many steps. Wi-fi didn’t work on my iPad....it did everywhere else in Portugal and Spain.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I have a new favourite place. If you know Alentejo, you know how good this gets: middle of nowhere, a swimming pool, a small place with 4 double rooms (so it never gets too crowded). Excellent. What makes it perfect are Felix and Sonja, their reception, their caring of the place (everything is impeccable) and of the guests. I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely come back. What some guests could not like: the place is ~20 minutes drive from Serpa, and similar to Minas de São Domingos. But, there is a fridge you can use and a small kitchen available to the guests, where you can cook some meals so you won't even need to leave the place - which I found great.

Amazing room with marvelous castle view, neat and clean every day. 9.5 Excellent
Pros: Guida was a wonderful hostess. Excellent meal and great value for money. Quiet location with a terrific view. Rooms were very clean.
Cons: Really wasn't aything negative about our stay.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is my first comment on booking.com. the place is very quiet, could hear the sound of fish jumping in River Guadiana, could see deers running through woods on the other side of the river. The room is clean and tidy, each room has a big balcony with good view of the river. Most importsnrly, the lady host is very helpful and nice, always smiles on her face, get up early just to cook breakfast for me to catch early flight, grilled chicken is very awesome. I would stay in this small hotel again for my next travel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Waking up with the ‘screams’ of the deers, a cup of tea on the balcony watching the river. Wonderful breakfast on the terrace. Coming back in the afternoon, a dive in the pool to cool down. Dinner on the terrace: traditional Portuguese dishes, a good glass of whine. The owners are helpful and warm people. In short: when traveling to the south make sure you make a stop here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lavish breakfast. Good restaurant for dinner on the premises. Spacey terrace with some great views on Guadiana River. Great place to clear one's head.
Cons: No idea what could be better.

Pros: The friendliness of all members of this family run chalets, comfort and quality of their very freshly cooked foods. The fact that we were totally immersed in the surrounding nature with beautiful views of the river Guadiana.

Pros: Everything ok
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The bbq fish was delicious. The breakfast was excellent. The views from the room magnificent.
Cons: Nothing
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is a great family-run 'hotel' on the banks of the River Guadiana just south of the little village of Alamo. In some ways, it's more like a motel, in that the accommodation is all in small units but parking for cars was separate from the units and the units do not have kitchen areas. The units all look out over the river and as ours was an upstairs unit, we had a large balcony area. (The downstairs units have small garden areas.) We had a good evening meal in the small restaurant at the property and the breakfast (which was included in the price we paid) was also very good. The (mature) daughter of the owner acts as receptionist and waitress, she speaks good English and she has a very friendly, helpful personality. As we were walking the GR15, this was only about 15 minutes' walk off our route, so the location was good for us. Make sure you have sufficient cash with you as they can't accept card payments.
Cons: I suppose it would have been nice to have a kettle and tea and coffee in the room but that seems rather unusual in Portugal.

Pros: The location was amazing looking over the river Guadiano, we also got an unexpected upgrade, so had a room directly by the pool, it was fab! Staff were really friendly and helpful.
Cons: The only thing that we would have liked were coffee facilities in the room, there weren't any and possibly a pool bar? It certainly didn't spoil things for us though!

Pros: Breakfast was good and so was the bar and pool. The best part of this was the girl (Joyce) who worked at the reception desk. We couldn't get our GPS to work and she was able to get it up and running for us. Pros: Don't rely on previous reviews because the place has new owners, they are very gentle and trying to make the place better. The room was cozy, the street so quiet and they gave us a very good adress for dinner. I can only recommend it especially since it is very affordable. Mertola is a very nice town by the way.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Mr Carlos (host) was very friendly and informative, lovely traditional room, great location.
Cons: Limited parking
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It is an interesting old house with courtyard and good public rooms. The room was large and the bathroom nice with plenty of hot water. The room heat was adequate, but the extra blanket provided was welcome. Outside sitting area, inside sofas, a library in the main hall, all very charming. The bed was comfortable and Carlos, the owner, very friendly. A good experience in a quirky, old big house with nice spaces. Parking very close and free of charge. The house is inside the old village and defensive wall... Very quaint and the cobble-stone alleys are a treat. Carlos advised a restaurant, which was good food at great prices and a server that spoke excellent English.
Cons: Had to call the owner from outside the door, but not too much of a problem, as he was there very quickly. He warned me that breakfast would be simple, as he had an appointment the next morning. The breakfast was ok, nice variety of things to eat...except for the coffee.! My suggestion is an investment in a coffee-machine or a microwave. The brew was cold, by the time I got to the table. The whole village must be choking with visitors in high season.! I would avoid it then, if possible.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a classy small hotel that feels like a stylish private house. It's right at the quiet far end of this marvellous little town, with great views if you take an upstairs room. There's a small sun terrace, a charming sitting room, antique furniture that gives the place a live-in feel, and a super communicator of a cat called Sebastian. Host Carlos will welcome you with his excellent English and vast knowledge of Mertola and roundabout.

Cons: We like the hotel but are room bed was small for us
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A beautifully decorated old house, full of character, in the walled historic centre of Mertola. Bedroom was comfortable and spacious and there is a nice common room as well. The owner Carlos was exceptionally friendly and engaging, especially in getting me set up with some local activities/tours. The breakfast (which is in addition to the room price) is excellent and bigger than others I had in Portugal.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful old building in the old town - a fascinating house with inner courtyard and much bigger than it looks from the outside. Lovely room with high ceilings, window shutters and sunlight pouring in, polished wooden floors, nice bedlinen, comfortable beds. Friendly and professionally run. Super clean. Tea making, bottles of wine available, everything well thought out.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The owner was really helpful and informative the house was charming and breakfast was lovely Would go back again

Pros: All the wonderful help from Claudia. Home away from home. Excellent information about the area. Plenty to do for our 2-3 days. Loved swimming in Guadiana River on the hot days.
Cons: Village dogs barking.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Although out in the countryside, this is a really good place to stay. It is not far from Mertola which is well worth exploring and so are other parts of the area. We had a very comfortable stay including an excellent evening meal.
7.5 Good
Pros: Claudia is a very nice host, trying to make your stay very pleasant The rooms are very nice and well equipped Good breakfast and dinner
5.5 Okay
Pros: Very clean. Relatively close to the park where we wanted to hike. Hostess was friendly and provided some useful, local information on the natural areas nearby.
Cons: Although very clean and recently renovated, the unit was extremely dark. Darkly painted walls, very low lighting, even in the bathroom, small window. Probably better for younger guests or in the heat of mid summer. No real attempt to provide breakfast due to our admittedly restricted diet - no gluten and vegetarian.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: So peaceful. Beautiful backyard. Very friendly people. Very attractive and comfortable. Nice small intimate place meeting other travelers.
Cons: The dog barking
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Claudia is a wonderful hostess. Great info on local hiking, birding, Mertola. Recommended an excellent restaurant for us. Told us about local history. Such a peaceful place to stay and we were lucky enough to visit while rock roses were blooming. So beautiful. Nice breakfast too.
5.5 Okay
Pros: A friendly host who received us with a helping hand and hints and tips for our day trips.
Cons: The towels were a bit smelly and didn't dry at all, besides they didn't get changed, which would be okay if they'd have dried. We are sure though if we'd have asked Claudia would have given us new towels. The room was quite cold, despite the heater we were given, but that surely is an advantage in hotter times.

6.3 Good
Pros: - air conditioning / heating - fireplace in the living room - friendly staff
Cons: - wifi didn’t work - only Backpacker there, rest just old people - the bathroom is a scandal!! No soap for the hands, tiny, dark and freezing cold! Very disappointed! - staff was trying, but speaks 0 English...
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very nice host , Nelson. Quiet place and our kids thougt it was exciting.
Cons: The adress was incorrect so we went to wrong place at first.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Ease of check-in, just 800 m from bus station in the center, fire in the fireplace in the evening, nice kitchen, very comfortable bed, powerful Wi-Fi, thoughtful touches, quick assistance on the phone concerning location/check-in procedure. Just pop into the restaurant across the road and they will take care of you from there. Surprising amount of things to see in the town, including archeological sites and small museums, nature walks right nearby.
Cons: A little confusing messages about deposits and bank transfers for payment… For the “dorm“, I simply checked in and paid the normal way, everything was smooth. I think istaff members live in quarters on the ground floor and were kind of yelling at each other about something for quite a while in the evening… Not a big deal but sitting on the sofa in front of the fire in the charming lounge and having this noise was a bit of a contrast.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The view was amazing and the room very comfortabel.
Cons: What we found a bit of a pity is that we didn’t meet any of the people owning or working here. There is no reception basically. The restaurant/bar wasn’t open the time we were there, closed on Monday and Tuesday. The bathroom was basic equipped, towels and toilet paper, no soap nor shampoo.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice room, good restaurant opposite guesthouse. Hiking track behind.
Cons: Wobbly mattress.
6.8 Good
Pros: Nice room when we got the double room we had asked for at reservation (got it on the second day only). Staff helpful, especially the manager at the restaurant when he knew we had been messed up with the rooms. He couldn’t do enough to make us happy (good local restaurant, by the way!) Nice to have access to a kitchen to make your own breakfast or breakfast can be bought. Lovely open fireplace.
Cons: We had reserved a double room for 2 nights. It took over 50 minutes to realise that the booking had not worked. So we were given a small twin room on the first night and the double room on the 2nd night which was much larger and better, reception the bathroom floor was full of hair and dirty (photos taken if needed)
8.3 Excellent
Pros: the view is fantastic - also for fotographers! but therefore you have to walk a while to reach the town. the recommendmends of our lady from the checkin were really good. everything looked quite new and the style of the enterieur was lovely. there were brochures of the region and the town in many different languages like german, french, spanisch etc!
Cons: very thin walls - but later in the night it is completely still, so you can sleep very well!

7.5 Good
Pros: Nice accommodation for reasonable price. Very quiet place (must be noted: we were almost alone in the hostel :-)). Nice views of the river and the neighboring little town in Spain. Superb pool included in the price was a nice bonus (water was clean and with well tempered). Really good and rich breakfast included in the price suprised us. Since we were traveling on bicycles, we welcomed the possibility of their safe overnight parking inside the hostel.
Cons: A little bit creaking beds. :-) The best years have a hostel behind, but it's still good accommodation.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We had the double en-suite rooms with river view. The view from the balcony was fantastic.
Cons: The hotel exterior needs repainting and there were a few cracked tiles.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The amazing view and excellent staff.
Cons: Rooms, bathrooms need upgrading. Strong sewage smell coming from the shower drains.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Pool and proximity to the river made it a great place to hang out. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was pretty much the same as that offered in the Lagos location. Since our bathroom was made for handicapped folks it was spacious. The WiFi was adequate in most areas.
Cons: Since the town is tiny and a bit of a walk it can be a challenge to find an adequate variety of food and beverages. There is limited transportation available unless you have your own car.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, fab location, lovely clean pool with amazing views
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Locatin overlooking the rive and closeness to the town
Cons: SHower tended to spray onto the floor - the water pressure is brilliant but the shower curtain not up to it
4.5 Okay
Cons: I arrived in the evening after walking 42 km and the hostel had no drinks, either hot or cold, except for tap water. A hostel has to be able to offer thirsty guests something, at least a kettle and a tea bag.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location and value

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The lady that greeted us and was so friendly and gave loads of info
Cons: Mattress was quite hard but this is my personal preference
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very close to the village square and points of interest. It was a quaint village Casa with an interesting spiral wrought iron staircase to the bathroom with access to a small balcony on the roof.
Cons: Not having tea or coffee making facilities and perhaps a little too firmer bed. Some people may have difficulties negotiating the spiral staircase.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Terrace on top floor and the use of kitchen. Also the property looked lovely outside and a good location. The property owners very helpful.
Cons: The bed was not comfortable and bathroom dim and small. The wardrobes were not very good.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Location in Mertola was outstanding, close to the castle, local cafes and some nice restaurants
Cons: Staff were a bit off hand with arrival details. The bed in the room was in a corner against the wall which wasn't terribly helpful. Lastly, the air conditioner was above the bed, so you either had to endure freezing cold air blowing in your face or put up with the hot, still night.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great value for money, lovely host, quiet, central location.
Cons: Bed area in bedroom a little small, but very comfortable bed and a good nights sleep.
