Montenegro is a small country that is full of mountain scenery, sandy beaches, churches, monasteries and fortresses, as well as forests and national parks.
What to do in Montenegro
1. Visit Budva
With stretches of beach, including Jaz, the most famous beach, and a pedestrianized Old Town surrounded by city walls, Budva is a popular destination to explore.
2. Go Outdoors
Durmitor National Park offers activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking and rafting. Here you can also see the Tara River Canyon which, at 51 mi long and 4,300 ft deep, is a spectacular sight.
3. Explore Kotor
This fortified town with its abundance of churches, museums and Venetian-style architecture has a lot to offer its visitors.
4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine
Try the fresh carp and trout from Lake Skadar and River Tara or take the opportunity to sample the local smoked hams and cheeses from the towns, such as Njeguši, in the interior.
5. Taste Some Montenegrin Wine
The Plantaže Winery, famous for its vranac wine, is situated next to Lake Skadar and offers various tours and wine tasting events for visitors to their wine cellars.
When to visit Montenegro
The best times to visit Montenegro are from May to June and September to October when temperatures can average around 69°F. Coastal temperatures in summer can average 81°F in July and August with cooler weather in the mountains.
How to Get to Montenegro
Entry Requirements
Nationals from US, Canada, Australia, Britain and EU countries are not required to have a visa to enter Montenegro but are required to hold passports that are valid for the duration of the stay. Stays of up to 90 days do not require a visa.
Plane
There are regular flights from the main European cities to Podgorica Airport, 7.5 mi from the capital city, and the national carrier Montenegro Airlines has its hub here. It is possible to get a minibus or taxi from the airport to the center of Podgorica.
Train
Montenegro Railways operates daily services between Serbia and Montenegro, starting at Belgrade and stopping at Podgorica before reaching Bar. Montenegro is also a member of the Eurail pass travel option.
Car
It is possible to enter Montenegro from neighboring countries by car provided your car has all the relevant insurance.
Bus
There are good bus connections between Montenegro and the neighboring countries, as well as further west into Europe. Coach services, such as Eurolines and GetByBus, run services to Montenegro.
Boat
Montenegro can be reached by ferry from Bari and Ancona in Italy. These services dock at Bar while cruise trips in the Asiatic make stops at Kotor.

How to Get Around Montenegro
Public Transportation
There are local bus systems that serve Podgorica and Budva with tickets costing around €0.80 ($0.90), though taxis may be a more reliable, albeit a little more expensive option, as the fares are based on distance.
Trains
There is a limited train network within Montenegro with a line that runs from Bar in the south to Podgorica and on into Serbia. There is another line that links Podgorica to Nikšić in the northwest.
Bus
The local bus network around Montenegro is reasonably priced and efficient and is one of the easiest ways to see the country. Tickets can be bought at the station or on the bus and should cost around €15 ($17) for any journey within the country.
Car
Cars can be rented from international companies, such as Sixt, Europcar and Avis – which will be located at the airport and in bigger cities. There are local car rental companies, such as Meridian Rentacar and In Montenegro, which may offer cheaper alternatives.
The Cost of Living in Montenegro
Montenegro uses the Euro as its currency. ATMs are available throughout the country and while major credit cards are accepted in the larger hotels, they may not be accepted in smaller restaurants and shops. When buying groceries, expect to pay just over €2 ($2.20) for a dozen eggs and a 0.2 gallon of milk. Eating out is reasonably priced, with prices of around €5.50 ($6) per person for a meal in a slightly cheaper restaurant.
