9.5 Excellent
Pros: A "high end" onsen hotel with tatami rooms. We went for one night to hike to Naruko gorge. Sadly is the hiking way along the river still blocked and while some websites claim it will open soon again do i not think so. The tourists are steered away from the river (for safety?) into some less exciting side valley... but the gorge was an excellent spot for autumn colors.
6.8 Good
Pros: Big rooms with nice view on the mountain Food buffet with a lot of choices (but quality is quite average) Onsen: one inside and outside onsen which is relaxing Staff friendly, but limited English
Cons: Room: you can not adjust the air conditioning, only choose power, not temperature. There is a ventilator which is permanent running and noisy. Limited amenities in bathroom. TV with limited choice. Food: breakfast and dinner is buffet style which does not fit the dishes. Some hot dishes were cold, noodles stick together I would not book this Onsen hotel again
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and comfortable room. Beautiful location. The food was delicious and we ate in our own little room.
Cons: Outdoor bath was closed.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Huge room with a view of the town and surrounding mountains. Dinner and breakfast buffets we're also very good. I was able to get a private outdoor onsen which was fantastic. To top it off, shuttle service to and from the train station is provided.
Cons: -------
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It has a nice Onsen indoor and outdoor

Pros: This is a fantastic place to stay, the meals prepared in house were superb and the service from the staff second to none. Probably one of our best and most enjoyable stays in Japan (this was our fourth visit to Japan). The downstairs foyer and lounge area is really lovely. Our bags were collected from the railway station and taken to our rooms while we went on a walk through the local gorge.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The meals were absolutely amazing . Delicate and delicious. The family who run this ryokan are lovely one one gets very personalised service.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Dinner is very fantastic. Room is good.
Cons: Quite far from train station. It is proper to have car. Some staffs can not communicate in English.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff! Great food
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was marvelous! Everything about it was just fantastic and exceeded my expectations! 1) room: We switched to a third floor room that did not have an attached bath, because it was larger and was said to have a good view--and it really had the most marvelous view of the snow-covered mountains that I enjoyed immensely. It was nice and large, and had a sink for brushing teeth etc. The futon were thick and cozy and there was lots of space. The bathroom was right close by and very clean, modern and nice. 2) baths: But it was the baths that were most amazing. I did the Yu-meguri ticket so got to see various other baths at different hotels and ours was the best. the indoor one wasn't the most luxurious but it was cozy and incredibly satisfying, and the OUTDOOR one (the rotenburo) is on the roof and was AMAZING to be there during a windy snowy evening! It's used as a "private" bath so when you enter you lock the door behind you and don't share with others, whcih is different from most (not better, just different), and the evening i spent in the snow and wind was absolutely breathtaking. 3) food: And then I must mention the food. OMG the food. I can't say enough about it. True onsen ryokan massive quantities of intense traditional Japanese cuisine (so--be prepared for that; nothing is adapted to western tastes!!!) 4) the town: it's a really fascinating little town worthy of exploring on foot. A center of traditional kokeshi-dall making. People VERY friendly, the mountains are gorgeous and many many hiking trails to explore, and the Yu-Meguri ticket allows you to explore several different onsen ryokan/hotels in town 5) the people: what a lovely family! So friendly and kind. I am a Japanese speaker, but I noticed that the man who mostly runs it speaks very decent English (he lived in England for 6 months and studies it to be better able t host international guests), which is not at all common out there in Miyagi prefecture!!
Cons: There was nothing I didn't like! I can't wait to go back!

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The dinner was extraordinary and the staff were excellent, both at the front desk and in the restaurant. Breakfast was also delicious. The hotel is on the outskirts of town but the hotel offers a free shuttle service to and from the station. The information centre rang them when we arrived. A very memorable stay in very spacious family rooms. An authentic experience in a tatami mat room with futons.
Cons: Nil
7.5 Good
Pros: Great food. We don’t eat beef so they prepare the seafood for us. Delicious and thank you for your hospitality.
Cons: The room is a bit old. Wall paper starts to peel off. Need renovation.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The staff is nice with smile. There is music through out hotel which feel relaxing. There is cook it yourself fried egg for breakfast with little stove on the table which I love.
Cons: The hotel is located around 1 km and it is long distance if carry with large luggage. Hotel said they provide free shuttle but I did not use as I tried to contact via booking.com few times but no reply at all. May be they have free shuttle waiting for every train arrival time. When I arrived I took a bus straight to Naroko Gorge...I made good decision to have my big luggage to be delivered to the hotel in Tokyo by Yamato service. On the check out, they did not tell me in advance of shuttle service time so I walked again to station...if no big luggage, it is nice walk through town. I do not like the room door as it is metal which look weird to me. I felt like I was trapped in the cell :-( Onsen is not that big but timing is good.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: A good introduction to typical Japanese onsen and excellent local produce at dinner and breakfast. The staff were extremely helpful.

5.8 Okay
Pros: It had 3 different types of onsens. We had nice traditional Japanese breakfast for very reasonable price.
Cons: The guest room was very small. It was actually just a room with fusuma which couldn't be locked. Only the paper wall between you and the corridor. We had to check in before 8pm, which was a hard thing in those snowy mountains.
7.0 Good
Pros: Right in the heart of Naruko Onsen and has 4 hot spring which are opened 24hrs within the compound. One of them was an outdoor onsen which was very fun. The traditional tatami room I stayed in was interesting though there was no modern luxuries like TV or even a kettle. You can cook in the spacious kitchen right outside your room but I believe you need to pay for the gas. Cutleries were provided thought frankly I didn't bother with that. The room itself is also spacious - completely capable of fitting 2 person in comfortably. Yukata , Haori and wooden clogs were provided. I arrived very late on my first day and the owner was nice enough to wake up and let me check in.
Cons: It is a bit further from the train station than I'd like. And you need to go down a slope to access it. So imagine climbing up the slope with your baggage. There is also no shower room or private toilets. You can only take a 'shower' in one of the onsen where there are taps, basins, shampoo and shower gel available. Like a public bath. The power plug inside the room is very different from what we are used to and cannot be used without a special adaptor. You can rent the adaptor from the hostel for a very affordable price. There is no way to lock the room.
6.8 Good
Pros: Good location, towels, yucata and linen were clean
Cons: some areas were dusty or not clean
4.5 Okay
Pros: it's the old traditional room, old building, feel not safety, no heater, toilet not clean
Cons: paper room and dirty toilet

5.8 Okay
Pros: Comfortable bed
Cons: The room smelt quite strongly the air freshener provided helped but after a couple of hours it would smell poorly again. No showers were available at all between 8am and 2pm. I believe the person at check might have tried to inform me of this at check in but the language barrier was too great and was caught off guard
4.5 Okay
Cons: My room 210 was next to the shared toilet and a sliding door made a noise from 4 am so it was not possible to sleep.
