A quirky and very French Hotel on the Quayside. Full of history and literally yards from the sea and in the old town with many restaurants. Note things quieten down in October, much different from the bustling summer months.
Paling near the hotel was €15 a day, a truffle expensive but this was charged by the town not the hotel.
If you are interested in nice little things such as brocante (antiques, bric à brac), you will find this place very amusing and inspiring. Many things are placed in a rather crammed way, but it is altogether giving the warm atmosphere. Beware, as there is no lift to top floor ! It is very helpful for us that they didn’t have fixed time for the breakfast, so we had it rather late every morning in a very spacious high ceiling room. So it was only us which l found it very relaxing and being spoilt ! The freshly squeezed fruit juice tasted delicious. The bathroom was well equipped with bathtub, slippers, bathrobes ( but no body lotion ). Quite nicely renovated with good old days’ touch. Wifi connection was excellent ! Many restaurants are nearby, and L’Avant Port recommended by the owner’s daughter was great ! It is really in the heart of St-Martin-de-Ré facing the port and the sea (from our room), so ideal for the short stay to make most of this charming town.
I know it is still to do with high season, but thought the breakfast could be bit more sufficient by adding some choice of eggs or cheese, considered the price we had to pay. Some furniture were wobbly or slightly not in order ( difficult to close etc), but it all depends how we see them....as the charm of the old stuff, or inconvenience.
The house has great character. Breakfasts were superb.
Lack of car parking facilities (but we understand the difficulties). Coffee/Tea - making facilities in the room would have been good.
Location, weather, recommended restaurant, general help
Self serve breakfast would be much quicker Self serve bar in the living room would be excellent for a beer or wine A few doorknobs etc could be repaired. Italian style or separate shower instead of shower / bath - much safer for us old guests.
Attention to detail in the building overall and especially the room was exceptional. Very eclectic/French decor which suits the building and the location - which was fantastic. View from our room was amazing - over trees and on to the sea. Owners are very friendly and approachable.
Shower head was broken - not a huge issue. Breakfast was lovely but a bit too much emphasis on bread!
