Ridee Villa - Unawatuna - Building

9.6 Excellent (182 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I stayed there for 4 nights in January 2020. The hotel is located at the eastern end of Unawatuna beach. It’s a 2 minutes walk to get to the beach. Even though there is a busy street in front of the hotel, it is very quiet inside. The staff and the owner (Sumith) are friendly and generous (organized trips, beach mattress and towels, "welcome back drink" when returning from the beach, ...). Great hospitality! Fabulous interior, terraces on the hill behind the hotel. Very good breakfast (really good coffee, different curries every day, eggs cooked by your choice). Highly recommended!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved every single second of our stay here, almost cried when we left, we were cared for SO MUCH. Could not ask for a kinder team and service from Sumith the owner and his staff. All he cared about was our safely, comfort and ALWAYS going the extra mile. We loved the stay so much that we extended for another 3 nights! We cannot thank Sumith and his staff enough, he is a man with a HUGE HEART bursting with kindness and making your stay extra special. The pool was lovely and calm, he arranged a private trip to Yala National Park (and packed us a tropical breakfast for the car journey!), not to mention the free excursions he provided us with the visit the wonderful parts of the country. Super wifi, super luxurious 4 poster beds with nets and a clean, luxury bathroom. Security at the front 24/7 and always someone to help no matter what time of the day. Incredible breakfast, fruit, cereal, sri lankan, beautiful brown bread and a chef at hand to freshly cook your eggs. The warm welcome from Sumith and his staff was a great start to the day! I could write more, but all I have to say is you must stay here - it is a home away from home with everything you need no matter where you come from in the world. Spectacular honeymoon, thank you Sumith and your wonderful staff! Thank you for my beautiful silver garnet ring, we will always remember our time at your villa and hope you visit us in the UK! Umara & Muhammed
Cons: Everything was perfect and beyond our expectations. Hopefully we can visit again and will tell all our friends to stay at Ridde Villa - it is PERFECT ! :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All staff are wonderful, cheerful, eager to please and always on hand with a big smile. Location was fabulous, although on a road (with the beach directly opposite) it's gated and you don't hear the noise. There were so many little nooks and crannies within the Villa, I absolutely loved the decor, a lot of thought and love has gone into making it unique - you could spend hours looking at all the quirky details of the place. To make guests feel even more comfortable there are water stations on each floor as well as kitchen facilities including coffee & tea available. Breakfast was also delicious, an excellent selection of all different types of local foods, fruits, toasts and eggs, bacon etc. cooked fresh for you there and then, what's not to love about that?
Cons: Nothing, absolutely nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptionally tastefully decorated hotel, designed by a very hospitable owner, Sumith. He did his best to make us feel home- and succeed! Cozy yet elegant and stylish hotel exceeded our expectations. We even were driven to the remote beach and town by unique cars that Sumith collects. The staff was also very pleasant and helpful. It was a wonderful stay!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved everything about this stay. A beautiful boutique hotel with unbelievable attention to detail in both aesthetics and comfort. The team at Ridee Villa could not be friendlier or more attentive to our needs. Unparalleled customer care. Unawatuna is also gorgeous and this hotel is very well situated. We spent a week here visiting this part of Sri Lanka and it was the highlight of our 3 week trip which got us as far north as Jaffna. So much to do to keep the adventurous family members happy but also so easy to visit one of the many beautiful beaches and relax. Great local yoga and meditation options too to get your zen on. Absolutely recommend staying here!
Cons: Everything was perfect.

Pros: It had a homestay feel but with hotel facilities. The couple that run it are very kind and arranged transport for us. They serve a delicious breakfast on the rooftop terrace. It’s super quiet with amazing views. The rooms are nicely decorated and scented with cinnamon oil to keep the mosquitos away. Would definitely stay here again!
Cons: It’s up a steep hill 5 mins from the main strip, so tuk tuk drivers will attempt to charge more to go up the ‘mountain’ but if you negotiate, it’s not a problem.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: the staff is amazing, the breakfasts are delicious, stunning sea view
Cons: location on a hill, go far to the beach
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Penthouse unit say no more! Best views, best hosts, amazing stay! We had great 3 nights here at Lara’s place, the hosts were accommodating with any needs during our stay. Peaceful hilltop retreat 10 minute walk to the beach or get a tuk tuk and your there. The unit was clean, had all necessary amenities for a home type stay (kitchen, fridge, patio area, etc...) Stay away from the tourist beach areas and relax from a view above. Highly recommend!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We had a gorgeous view from are balcony and the Sri Lankan breakfast was the best we’ve had in Sri kanaka well travelling around. Lovely Sri Lankan coffee. Staff were helpful and accommodating.
Cons: The bed we had was not the comfiest.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is absolutely wonderful. The breakfast is, by far, the best we had in all of Sri Lanka!! The location of this place comes with an amazing balcony view of Unawatuna (beach). This really gives the place a peaceful and relaxed vibe. Tuctucs are cheap and easy to find, so distance to the beach is not an issue (it's also not that far). We have been treated with such respect and great hospitality, they have helped us a lot. Room is very clean and nicely decorated. Oneof the best places we have been. We would go there again any time!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was absolutely delicious. Each morning we had freshly made Sri Lankan coffee, egg hoppers, coconut roti, curry and fresh fruit. Best breakfast we had in Sri Lanka! The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. I’m so happy we chose Lara’s place. The sea view was gorgeous!
Cons: We chose the location for the sea view, but it is a walk up a hill after going to town or the beach.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It’s location is so beautiful, although it being a little «hike» up a steep hill, but you could also just take a tuk tuk
10.0 Excellent
Pros: no words-stunning everything!

Pros: Amazing place! We couldn't expect such an experience: everything - from the rooms equipment to the chipmunks on the tree in the garden - is so thoughtfully done and taken care of. Just a few examples: there's a choice of sunscreens and moisturizers in the lobby; your glass bottle with shower gel is replenished daily; the terrace for breakfasts is set up so that you will watch a family of cutiest chipmunks on a huge tree; and there's everything for you to enjoy the pond in the evening without being bitten by mosquitoes. The breakfasts are to die for! I can't say enough good words about the team, their attentive attitude and sincere smiles! Thank you, guys, so much for this stay, you made our trip!
Cons: Everything was perfect! I wish we had another week or two here

Pros: Me and my husband travel a lot, however I can say this hotel was outstanding ! Room were clean and beautiful. It’s in a busy area but doesn’t seem like it thanks to the amazing garden , a lot of animals visit. Their staff were amazing ! Always looking after us !

Pros: The place was comfortable, very friendly staff, close to the beach and very good breakfast.
Cons: The only thing that I didn't like it was very strong smell of humidity in the room all time long.

Pros: Beautiful garden, lovely room and even lovelier people! Breakfast was good and we watched monkeys eating fruit while we had our fruit plates one morning.
Cons: N/A
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The place and the rooms are desgined realy nicely and has natural and special vibes.. the room has a great view to the garden/jungle outside..
Cons: The walls are thin, but they provide earplugs ( the area is pretty quiet but you can hear your neighboors)... the towles were rough...
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Dunes is a green oasis in the midst of the busy area near Unawatunu beach. It is a 5 minutes walk to the beach. The hotel has 10 rooms and one private cottage . We were upgraded and given a roomy cottage which was a little away from the main building and had a private entry, small garden and a patio to chill. The cottage was very nicely decorated with a very earthy rustic feel and good use of wood. The cottage had an A/C, Remote Fan, Fridge, TV (TV is only in the cottage and not in any other rooms), Mosquito net, Coffee Machine. One of the highlight of this cottage was the Open air Shower in the bathroom. This place is just great and will I will definitely stay here next time I visit Unawatuna ...
Cons: May be the breakfast could be better and more variety could be added... Apart from this it is a 10/10 Hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed at this amazing and absolutely beautiful place only for one night, but we enjoyed it 100%. The location is great, close to the beach and fruit market. The room is big, the bed was wide and very comfortable. The AC and fan worked great. The interior is incredible. The territory is also nice and you can see monkeys and peacock. The breakfast was ok, but the coffee was super good
Cons: Nothing, everything was fine.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was excellent and the staff were super accommodating. We had an early flight and they made us breakfast to go for 5am. Thanks for having us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing, relaxing spot in the middle of busy Unawatuna. Beautifully designed hotel, tastefully decorated, with a lot of attention to detail, attentive staff and great breakfast options. This is not your average beachside hotel - there’s an idea and a vision behind it that Gayan, the owner, and his staff are bringing to life. Very much recommend!

Cons: Surfing the local waves
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cartoon is taking very good care of this place. After a month in Sri Lanka, this place has definitely the best atmosphere. It is a bit far from Unawatuna but free tuc-tuc rides are offered to get no nearby places. Thanks for everything!

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome hosts and great vibe. A good place for young travellers to stay.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner, Cartoon has created an affordable, fun and welcoming hostel just outside of Unawatuna! Cartoon provides tuk tuk rides to the beach and other close by places for free, as well as will do pick ups for a very reasonable fee :) We stayed over NYE and Cartoon ensured everyone had a great time, got to the beach party safely and partook in the festivities. Cartoon organized dinners each night for those wanting to participate and a small but delicious breakfast with tea was complimentary in the mornings. The hostel is small which meant everyone got to know one another well. The hostel has some great "hanging out" spaces and was always clean.
Cons: The hostel is a bit of a walk to the small beach and restaurants and does require a tuk tuk to get to Unawatuna town or beach. The room got warm during the night as the fan could only do so much
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great location, only a 20 min walk to dalawella beach (the best one!) Super clean place, good shower and of course the best host being cartoon! He helped us with getting a scooter, had amazing family food dinners and the free tuktuk rides are a great bonus too. He’s a great host!
Cons: My room got pretty hot - but you can still sleep
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is a gem situated in Unawatuna. It is perfect for meeting new people from different parts of the world. The owner, Cartoon, is a wonderful/ friendly person who can help you out in every way possible. He makes sure that the guests are happy and comfortable. There is an open area to chill filled with flora and fauna and a fireplace The beach is nearby and the hostel has two cute dogs. I would highly recommend you to stay at this place as it really feels like home! Once you get in, you won't feel like going out.

Pros: Property was just stunning! Staff were friendly amd we got all the attention from them.
Cons: Location was fine but, a bit distant from major attractions. We were there for a week and found it tiring to haggle with tuk tuk drivers daily. Would have also preferred a restaurant on the premises given the 5 star rating.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: This was a small quiet hotel that gav personal service.

Pros: This place is a hidden gem. Only four rooms with a pool and full staff. We were with friends and had the place to ourselves. We relaxed, took a tuktuk into Galle, came back from the bustle and noise to calm pool waters. The food was exceptional. We ate all our meals at the manor and everything was delicious. The staff are wonderful as well. Very helpful and always willing to do whatever is needed.
Cons: Better adapters for multiple devices in the rooms. Should be an easy fix!

The family were so welcoming and spoke fantastic English, really lovely people. They couldn't do enough for us. Couldn't recommended staying here enough.

Pros: Very colonial look. Shower was good.
Cons: The beach you cannot swim or easily walk. No near shops. Closest restaurant was over 1km. There was no customer service. The beach view was very limited. The pool was clean but had a dark mossy look which was not appealing. There was no staff-there, you had to go around looking for one. Just a very unusual set setup.

Pros: good western breakfast, good bathroom. Enough to sleep and shower after the beach. The beach is a 10min walk
Cons: No AC in the room so it was way to hot to sleep (january). No equipment in the room
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice staff. We had the cheap fan room which was clean but a bit too hot at night. Location works well. Great value for money
Cons: Was annoying they didn’t say at check in that you have to order the Sri Lankan breakfast in advance the day before. Ended up missing out both days. Should automatically be Sri Lankan and have to ask for continental if anything. Fan room whilst cheap was way too hot and stuffy.

It was life saver. The location is very close to center and beach is pretty close too. Bed was comfortable and toilet was great too. Will definitely recommend this place.
6.0 Good
Pros: Really nice place, new, clean and comfortable, not so far from the beach. Good breakfast. Nice staff.
Cons: I got the one room at the ground floor right next to entrance/breakfast area. The room was very damp and there was noice off and on throughout the night from inside the house, a water pump or something. Maybe the other rooms at the upper floors was not this way.

Pros: The room was lovely. The decoration of the whole villa is amazing. We had the best breakfast at Sri Lanka and the staff was really nice, above all the manager who always cared about any detail and was willing to give us recommendations as for where to eat and where to shop.
Cons: Anything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The bedroom/suite was super comfortable. The balcony on the upper floor is like your own penthouse deck!! The swimming pool was amazingly blissed!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is really beautiful: a large mansion set in a green and lush garden with a wonderful swimming pool (múch better than the overrated Unawatuna beaches). Our rooms were great: large rooms, beautiful traditional furniture, great breakfast and last but not least very friendly and helpful staff. One of our rooms had a large terrace, the other a balcony, both with great views. The room rate was really low (off season with discount) and we almost felt guilty for paying so little for such a great place.
Cons: Due to the recent terrorist attacks, there were very few other guests. As a result there was limited staff and we couldn't get lunch or dinner at the hotel, although tea and light snacks were provided. Not everything was working properly, e.g. poor tv reception, unreliable wifi, low water pressure (we were in the highest-located room). Despite these small challenges, we really enjoyed our stay and even extended it beyond our original stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were friendly and helpful beyond all expectations. The main building is open air and interweaves with the garden,. It is quite gorgeous. The pool is great. The rooms are spacious and well appointed.
Cons: A little difficult to find at first. They don't have sign.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: the staff were super friendly and would help me with anything i needed, truly made my stay special, i would definitely be back
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The rooms are excellent. The moment you enter the room you will know what I am talking about. The rooms have all the amenities, has an outdoor balcony. This place has a great swimming pool. Nandu took us to the bike place to help us to rent the bike for free of charge. He was very kind and a sweet boy.
Cons: The fact that we were alone and there was no one in the hotel that particular day.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely loved the welcoming and helpful staff. The manager, Nadun, took time to sit with us and he helped us get the most out of our stay. The breakfast was delicious and healthy, the rooms were excellent, with lovely balconies, and swimming in the freshwater pool surrounded by nature was a treat. We ate dinner at the hotel one night and it was delicious. The nearby herbal garden was great for ayurvedic products and massages. I'd definitely stay here again. Highly recommended.
Cons: There was party noise until late on the Saturday night, from a neighbouring hotel, but the other nights it was peaceful.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: the atmosphere in this lovely hotel is awesome. Clean, helpful staff, near the beach
Cons: the wifi connection to internet was poor and random. Needed to ask the personnel to boot the system every morning.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The bed was really comfy and the breakfast was great. The staff were also lovely and helpful.
Cons: The internet connection didn’t extend to my room so I had to use communal areas. There was also a couple of power cuts during my stay which was frustrating. Toiletries could also be supplied.
5.0 Okay
Cons: Our first night at Norlanka was not good. The air conditioning did not work, the shower only gave out hot water, we could not plug in our phones to charge, the WiFi was non existent, the dinner we ordered was terrible and the room did not have any amenities like toothpaste, shower gel etc.. After speaking to the manager, they fixed some of these issues the next day (the WiFi continued to be bad) and gave us a 10% discount. My feeling is that Norlanka is much more suited to being a homestay than an actual hotel and after staying at other hotels which are similar priced in Ella and Kandy, it feels like fairly bad value for money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was delicious - I tried every option!! I loved the staff, I get all the help I needed, and I felt so cozy all the time here. I had good chats with the staff. They even invited me to join them to the temple in the morning, what a pity I didn't have enough time to! Room was spacious with beautiful closet for clothes. From my balcony there was possible to see peacocks hanging around . Also I spot one kingfisher sitting high there and keeping on eye the hotel garden. As a conclusion, I definitely recommend!
Cons: Nothing to complain about!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A secluded oasis of calm very near to the beach with easy access to the city. Beautiful breakfast and friendly staff who can’t do enough to make your stay amazing .
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location and food. Aircon and hot water always readily available:)
Cons: The room was a little dark.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, 1 minute walk from the beach. It is at the quieter end of the beach so you get a good night’s sleep. Staff could not be friendlier or more accommodating. Room was spotless and comfortable. Happy to recommend and happy to stay again. All excursions booked through hotel were slightly cheaper than outside prices and service matched the standard of the hotel.
Cons: Limited toiletries in the bathroom. There was one small guest bar of soap for two people. It wasn’t replaced.
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Wi-fi completely useless.

Pros: The hotelroom was big and clean. The bed was comfortable. The staff was lovely, friendly and helpful. We had a great stay!
Cons: The breakfast was okay, nothing special but it was fine. The hotel location is a bit remote, but this was actually quite nice, surrounded by rice fields.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved everything about the Fort Edge 5 minutes away from Unawatuna beach set in rolling lush countryside peace and quiet. The service and friendliness of the staff was as good if not better than our stop at 5* hotels we would ask for a tuk tuk and they would say no use hotel car and take us to the beach. My wife only drinks Diet Coke seems to be a real shortage in Sri Lanka next day half dozen bottles appear in fridge The service and food in the restaurant is fantastic drinks served to the sun bed honestly nothing is to much trouble we never even asked it was just done for you I am not a person who can’t walk to the restaurant to get a drink. We even had breakfast bought to the room one morning in fact I saw a lot of tea and coffee being taken to rooms in the morning. The rooms are very clean and cleaned every day the pool and pool area are very clean Breakfast very good buffet some days other days omelette, fried eggs bottomless basket of toast and coconut roti We wish the fort edge every success in the future and we are already planning a return Thanks Adam and Deborah Miles
Cons: Nothing to say we we had stayed longer great base
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had an absolutely brilliant time. Don and his team are a great bunch. The food was out of this world. Fantastic value for money!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location. Peacefull
Cons: Hard bed
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The beach is close by, about 10 mins drive. We were there for New Years, water temperature was perfect and we were able to find a lot of sun beds in front of restaurants. Most of the sun beds are free as long as you get something to eat or drink at the restaurant. Weather was great and lots of people so good vibe!
Cons: Nothing to dislike about the surrounding area or the beach, it wasn't the most beautiful beach I've been to in the world but it is still pretty and fun with lots of people and great for swimming, no complaints!
7.0 Good
Pros: Really friendly staff caring for your wellbeing and always there when needed. Nice pool and spacious rooms and fine working A/C Good warm shower
Cons: The room and especially the cushions and bed sheets/mattrasse had an unpleasant wet, moldy smell (we were there in rainy season so it might be different when the wheather is warm, but they should try to get control of the "wet-problem" - i.e. change bed stuff and ensure a sufficient ventilation or take other measures to reduce humidity levels in the rooms)

They change the main every single day so you wont get bored Thanks to Madam Sako and her Mother. Walking distance to Unawatuna beach and all the cool cafes and shops around 10 mins.
Cons: Mostly everything! We used Pick Me apps to Galle and Galle Railway Station cos its quite far but Pick Me apps is quite new in Unawatuna and you have to wait and try everytime you want to book cos normal Tuk Tuk driver are against them cos they are way cheaper. But yeah got declined many times and so at times we took normal Tuk Tuk.

Cons: Nothing.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was superb, quiet and secluded, we had a breathtaking view from our room at the top. Breakfast was simple but delicious. All staff were helpful and friendly.
Cons: The first room we stayed in was a little tired and could do with some redecoration and upholstery.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Super helpful staff. Easy walk to the beach but quiet jungle setting . Tuk tuk ride available in minutes if you need it. Easy distance to Galle. Breakfast lovely . Lovely pool and rooms.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Tuk tuks were easy to find on most occasions and we paid about LKR 400 max between Unawatuna and the hotel. Views from the rooms were excellent and the rooms were well kept. You could ask for it to be cleaned whenever you wanted. Staff were very helpful and honest.
Cons: Location was a little out of the way for the main Unawatuna beach but we much preferred Dalawella anyway. There were a few ants in the bathroom but room was clean otherwise.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely staff, beautiful location not too far away from the beach, and great property itself.
Cons: The water pressure in the shower was not great, and the design of the shower itself was a little strange so that not much water came out.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The Horizon Villa is a very nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of the coast. It felt like our own home at times, being that the number of rooms is small and the staff is very available and friendly. The food also was really good and the transportation services and arrangement were prompt.
Cons: It would have been nice to receive a better explanation of the rules of the game. For example, that if we needed the room clean we needed to ask in advance, giving the key to reception. And that it takes longer than expected to wait for food. But other than that, the experience was great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We love everything about this place , so peacefull , surrounded by great wildlife and birds . The staff were extremely helpful yet unobtrusive , we never got tired of the view mornings and evenings were superb . We had the deluxe mountain view room , very spacious , huge veranda / balcony. Lovely and peacefull yet only a few minutes walk / Tuk tuk from the beaches . Udesh the Tuk Tuk driver comes recommended. We really cant wait to return
Cons: Coming home
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was perfect! it was secluded but not too remote. City was a 20 min cab ride. There was a nice beach nearby and restaurant options weren't too bad. The staff were professional and always willing to help. A great stay overall.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything, was a little piece of heaven tucked away. The rooms are luxurious and I only booked the budget double, you can get even more luxurious. I loved the verandah too! Was so peaceful there and I could have easily stayed for a week. I loved the kinda outdoor rock shower feature too with hot water. The staff were excellent too, I couldn't fault the place. Will definitely return some day.
Cons: It's a little awkward having to get tuk tuks into town but the hotel and location is worth it plus I guess you could walk!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is a beautiful place to chill. We had a beautiful room with a outdoor seating area overlooking the jungle. The staff were amazing, very polite and friendly and the food from the onsite restaurant was also very nice. Would highly recommend!

Pros: This was our second to last stay of our 3 week trip in Sri Lanka and was our favourite so far! The room was spacious, has great air-conditioning, balcony and the best shower we've had in Sri Lanka! Location is perfect, bus stop outside and less than 5 minutes walk to beach. The family were so welcoming and spoke fantastic English, really lovely people. They couldn't do enough for us. The breakfast was delicious offering both traditional Sri Lankan food and Western options with great Coffee. When we left we were given a parting gift which was the icing on the cake. Couldn't recommended staying here enough.

Cons: Everything was amazing

Pros: The place was comfortable, very friendly staff, close to the beach and very good breakfast.
Cons: The only thing that I didn't like it was very strong smell of humidity in the room all time long.
8.3 Excellent
