What are the pros of staying at Bergen Budget Hostel?
Comfortable beds, great location and very cheap! It is in the city centre and it is only worth for a nights stay. Location perfect for public transport & city center. Towels are provided. Location was great. I needed to spend a night in Bergen between flights and it was close to the tram and the docks so it gave you a chance to see some things even if you visit touch and go. The staff was very friendly and were available on the phone even when I arrived very late the day of my booking. It was cheap. This is typical one-night hostel for this price. There wasn’t much people, there is place to sit and eat, equipped kitchen, clean beds, hot water. The location was great, it was also very quite when I went so I had the room to myself. Everything was clean and easy to find, the bed was good for the value. Perfect location, you can walk to most of the attractions in Bergen. The bathroom floors are heated and the showers are quite nice. I'd say it's a fairly good accommodation for the price you pay ,specially considering it's Norway. Very central location and convenient self check-in. It was cheap. Washing machine and dryer are available. Optimal location, easy booking, check-in, pretty clean. Generally a smooth experience. Easy access, clear instructions. The bed was comfortable, the sheets were clean, location was good very close to the center, the kitchen was well-equipped, people were nice, there is an electrical socket near each bed so so don't have to worry about the phone at night, warm water if you take the shower early. The location is just the best, few minutes from the railway station by walk. The people there amazing. Close to city center Clean Washing machine. The room was cheap. Location. Though it was too crowded but still only affordable choice in Bergen. Self check-in and check-out. Location, kitchen, bathrooms were good. There is also a sweet little backyard area. It was my second time here, and was the same! All good! Despite other comments, the hostel is amazing! Good location, with a confortable bed, very well equiped kitcken and very clean everywhere! I will stay in two days again!
What are the cons of staying at Bergen Budget Hostel?
I had a bit of trouble with the door, but after a couple tries everything went well. The rooms are super crowded and don’t have any privacy. Not enough ventilation. It felt very unsafe for women traveling alone especially since the rooms are mixed and there is no staff or reception in the premises. There is not much room to move around in the dorms once everyone brings their luggage in. The kitchen and the shared rooms were not very clean (the toilet was clean). I arrived late and there was an after-party feeling. One of the dorm doors was open and in the dorm I stayed, you couldn't use the lockers because they were dirty, there were no way to use a padlock and some of them had leftover stuff in. The dorm was packed with beds and luckily there weren't that many people when I visited as it felt really crowded even like that. Everything else. Bad ventilation system inside the rooms. The ventilation system in the rooms is bad. I know that is not hotel’s fault but people, there was one annoying drunk and sick men who was turning on light in common room for half a night, we was aggressive when we asked him to be quiet, then he was snoring so badly so we didn’t slept well all night. It’s because there aren’t any workers guests feel with impunity and can be rude. There was no freezer, and sometimes the hot water in the shower would turning scolding hot. There was no freezer, and sometimes the hot water in the shower would turning scolding hot. unsafe, not clean wouldn't recommend. no locks on doors, lockers busted open and no security from the street. No staff, you get a code for the door, so if you have any problem you have to call them, the room I stayed was cold and the place wasn't clean every day, so at the end of my stay the bathrooms and kitchen were not clean. It was super dirty, we didn't really feel safe and there were stealings before our arrivals, so people argued. nothing. didn't find for one night. The bathrooms could be cleaner, our room had windows that could not be opened, so we had Like 35 degree, you couldnt make your room dark. The rooms are too small for 8 beds. The room was stinky and the air con way too noisy. Couldn't sleep at all. The dormitory was extremely congested. Also, the common room and the sleeping area were adjacent, and my bunk-bed was just aside the door connecting the common room. As there is not much sound insulation, so it was not a place for a good nights sleep especially on nights when there were people sitting in the common room talking loudly till very late in the night. Also, sleeping in a 12-bed dormitory room can be tricky by design i guess as it was a bit cramped and people were checking in and out all night. Further, having just 2 bathrooms with showers can be quite problematic in busy hours. Also, there was no place to dry the towel. Lastly and possibly the worst part of the experience was the smell in the room - it rains all the time in Bergen and rain drenched smelly shoes in the dormitory quite motivated me to stay out in the common room and city more rather than in the dormitory. Easy to figure out and very independent. location is close to everything you need as well. it would have been nice to talk to someone who worked there when I had a question. First night was very unpleasant due to extremely poor heat and air condition in room C, but after making a complaint to the staff, I was moved to a room with much better air quality, making the rest of my stay enjoyable. This was awful. No security, anyone can walk in, no locks or safety at all. While I was on my room random people just walk in, look around, and walk out, seemingly to see if it’s empty and maybe to take things? Was really quite scary and uncomfortable. There’s no ventilation in two of the rooms, no windows and nothing opens, so it’s always smelling of damp and there is mould growing on the windows. My bed had a little shelf covered in dust and used snus. Really awful, unsafe, and shouldn’t be allowed to operate as it does. A massive safeguarding issue. No staff in the hostel so the communication is only by messages, and we don't have anyone in case of a problem. No window in the room, so it becomes quite warm during the night when there is the 8 people in the room ! No Hosts at all, all self Service. 8 people in one around 25 / 30 square meter rooms where you CAN'T OPEN any Windows and there is no air flow, that leads to very very bad smell and impossible sleeping and Breathing Problems. dirty and Stinky sheets, mine had 2 big Brown stains and smelled like someone with way to many beers slept in it. dirty and malfunctional Bathrooms. Very crowded Hostel, no much place for luggage. The Windows in Room D where not covered so you have all the lights from the streets lighting the inside during the night. very Bright Escape Route signal in the Room made also the Room very bright at night. Kitchen is right in front the Rooms so you can Imagine the smells Now add this all together Anddd: Result: booked for 2 days. "checked in at 19 in the Evening, and escaped at 6 in the morning the next day, absolutely impossible way to live in there. The heater in the room was not working and it was very cold at night, I had to cover my head with a blanket, there was noone to ask for help, there was no key to lock each door, there is no place to lo leave our luggage. It was a horrible place....there weren't any windows, the kitchen was dirty and the equipment was overused. The bathrooms were dirty with hair all over the place and the rooms were very small for the people that accommodated. There was no dishwasher, and I people not always cleaned after themselves. To small. Small space. Not Much to like - totally self service, had to figure out everything by myself... could´t find right bed & I end up in wrong room .... it was late & I was really tired..so not Great experience.... The room was too small for 8 people and it didn’t have a window so the air was very bad a bit smelly even. I couldn’t fall asleep, I booked it for 4 nights but I only lived there for one night and the rest of the days I booked a hotel and moved out of this hostel It was kinda horrible for me. The air was horrible. No windows in the dorm room. Sharing the room with seven other people - the air was really bad with no window. This made it hardly possible to sleep. Rather basic, “cold”, industrial, generic atmosphere. No aircondition, with 6 other people in small room it was really bad air and hot. The emergency exit light was too bright, disturbing. instructions were written as if the owner is annoyed by the customers. A more friendly and personal service would be appreciated. There is not staff at all, which is very weird as there is not possibility to sort a potential issue out. However, a day before of your arrival you get a message with all the information needed and a phone number.

What can guests expect during their stay at Bergen Budget Hostel?
It is a no frills budget hostel with everything you need if you are an independent traveller on a short stop over. The staff were super helpful kindly let me into the property before check in. Good value for money in the center of Bergen. Getting a hot shower might be a struggle though. You get what you pay for. Its possible to stay there, if you are flexible and used to cramped hostels with little light and not so good air. If you can up the price a bit, there are better alternatives available. Works okay for a night, i wouldnt stay any longer. Very near centre, great location, enough facilities to cook ourselves. Though it was too crowded but still only affordable choice in Bergen. Self check-in and check-out. Location, kitchen, bathrooms were good. There is also a sweet little backyard area. Easy to figure out and very independent. location is close to everything you need as well. The best ratio of price and value. Very central location, and comfortable bed bunks. The location was very good, the bed was comfortable and linen was included. Bathroom is spacious, clean, and warm. Two kitchen well equipped and lockers to put your personal belongings (don't forget to bring your own padlock). Entrance with a code. Easy access, clear instructions. The location is good, very close to the city center, and the bus - train station. The hostel is amazing! Good location, with a confortable bed, very well equiped kitcken and very clean everywhere! I will stay in two days again!

Opt for a Room with a Window
Some rooms lack windows, leading to poor ventilation and a stuffy atmosphere, so consider choosing a room with a window for better air circulation.
Consider Security Concerns
Some guests reported feeling unsafe due to the lack of staff, open dorm doors, and dirty lockers. Solo female travelers may want to prioritize safety and privacy when choosing accommodation.
Bring Your Own Padlock
While lockers are provided, some guests found them dirty and without the option to use a padlock, so it's advisable to bring your own for securing personal belongings.
Check the Heating
In colder weather, it's important to check the heating in the rooms, as some guests experienced issues with cold temperatures and non-functional heaters.
Be Mindful of Noise
The hostel can get noisy, especially in crowded dorms and common areas, so light sleepers may want to bring earplugs or consider alternative accommodation if noise is a concern.
Plan for Self-Service
The hostel operates on a self-service basis with no staff on-site, so guests should be prepared to follow instructions provided and handle any issues independently.
Consider Alternative Accommodation for Longer Stays
While suitable for short stopovers, some guests found the hostel less comfortable for longer stays due to crowded rooms, lack of space, and ventilation issues.
Prioritize Communication
As there is no on-site staff, communication is solely through messages, so guests should ensure they receive all necessary information before arrival to avoid any inconvenience.
Pack Light
Due to limited space in the dorms, it's advisable to pack light to avoid feeling cramped and to make the most of the available room.
Be Prepared for Crowded Facilities
The hostel's facilities, such as the kitchen and common areas, can become crowded, so guests should be prepared for a potentially busy environment.
