Pros: We had a lovely stay with Carolina and her pup Beces. We had two beautiful bedrooms with a shared bathroom in her home. Carolina made us welcome and we had use of the kitchen, refrigerator and garden. She fixed us an amazing breakfast and there was fresh fruit and biscuits in our bedrooms. The space was close to the center of town and the bedrooms were upstairs with great views over the town. Carolina cared for us like family!

Pros: A wonderful host and location
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Carolina was such a welcoming host we felt like we were leaving a friend when we said goodbye. Her breakfasts were amazing and she was full of information about where to eat and what to see. She even came on a tour around Chaves with us. She also went out of her way to help when we had a bit of a problem with parking! Casa da Magnolia is a little way out of the centre of Chaves but easy to reach by car and in a lovely quiet area.

Pros: Carolina is a very welcoming host with a big heart whose delicate touches lends added charm to one's stay. Her fresh made jams with breakfast are not to be missed and her attention to traditional fabrics means the bed covers are heavy but you stay cool overnight because the sheets breathe.

Overview Reviews

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The entire hotel , the views, ambience ,friendly staff
Cons: Everything was lovely so no negative things
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This one I want to write about! The location is magnificent - halfway up the mountain behind the spa town of Chaves - so you have a stunning view from the patio and the pool deck. I can't emphasize how lovely and historic the estate feels - quiet, welcoming, like slowing down time. Fortunately it's not the creaky kind of historic... The building (seventeenth century??) is all stone and tile, so it's solid and cool-- a respite from the hot Portuguese sun. Also, worth saying that yes, it's an active farm, but there weren't roosters waking us up, or pervasive farm smells. It was just the right amount of landscape: down the hill from the inn, you'd spot little lambs following their mama, or you could walk over to see the chickens (and enjoy the fresh eggs... one morning my daughter was invited to go fetch an egg, but the hen hadn't provided). The place is family-run, with extra staff for meals, so the attention felt kind but not overbearing. The owner took pride in suggesting wines, bringing over little tastings (which makes a natural segue to begin talking with other guests -- we met travelers from Germany, Brazil, Spain). The food is delicious: breakfast was a buffet of yoghurts, fruit, meats, cheeses, grainy breads w homemade preserves, and then the kitchen would send out small terrines of hot eggs and sausage - and for the kids, the famous egg custard tarts!) Dinner was 25/pp euro fixe, which included wine, huge salads, and amazing grilled proteins: veal one night; fish the next; even a grilled goat that my husband couldn't get enough of. In another country we would have paid twice (thrice?) for the value of what we received at Quinta da Mata. (Incidentally, my teens were thrilled with the good Wifi...so if you don't want to entirely unplug, that's possible too...)
Cons: Hardly anything to speak of -- It's a historic property, so we didn't expect giant TVs or a minibar. In the early evening, when fellow guests were dressing for dinner, the hot water was less hot, so we just timed our bathing for later or earlier. Also, our nice heavy bath had a hand-held shower but no hook to hang it by, which made for a somewhat gymnastic experience--but then our daughter's room did have a typical hook, so that might just be a small quirk of ours.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful unique place ! Beautiful views, calm and peaceful and very very warm and accommodating owner and staff !
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location and great service.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Out of town, but that is what we wanted. We loved our stay here, great wine, good food and great hospitality. Loved it.
Cons: There was no hook on the wall for the shower head to hang. Such a simple thing, but would have made it a perfect stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful family-run traditional quinta in a spectacular natural setting with views, about 3km from Chaves. The house is amazing, with lovely grounds and swimming pool. Peaceful and relaxing and close to nature, which is what we were looking for. Breakfast is good and we also had dinner there one evening (25 euro a head but includes a bottle of nice wine from the region). My partner had the beef and I had the goat (first time tentatively trying it)...both were absolutely delicious!! All local produce, much of it coming from the estate itself I think, and everything is done with care and well thought out with really nice touches everywhere. Most importantly, the owner Luis and family and staff were really nice and warm and made us feel most welcome. They spent the time to chat, giving us great information and suggesting some amazing routes and places to visit. Many thanks for a wonderful stay!
Cons: No complaints at all. The only suggestion I have is regarding the room we stayed in. It didn't have a lot of natural light (and that did keep the room cool as the weather was very hot)...but the lights were dim and I think an extra light in the room would be a good idea.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Only the views. The hotel was very old Portuguese, very dark inside and not homely or comfortable. NO SEATING in our room only stiff wooden chairs. BED TOO SMALL. ROOM VERY DARK. SMELLED VERY VERY BAD. SHOWER AWFULLY SMELL AND WE DID NOT SHOWER BECAUSE OF THAT. WATER WAS TEPID. AWFUL TWO NIGHTS. NEVER NEVER AGAIN. FOOD TERRIBLE BREAKFAST. WE ATE OUT IN THE DAY TO MAKE UP FOR THAT. IT JUST LOOKS GOOD BUT IN REALITY IS AWFUL TO LIVE IN.
Cons: ABOVE SAYS IT ALL
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice secluded but yet close to Chaves. Had a meal and it was stupendously good, could not have asked for better hospitality
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Luis was a great host and place was in a lovely location on their own estate/farm. We upgraded our room for an extra 10€ and had a massive suite overlooking the farm. Lots of lounge areas and also their own chapel with an interesting history. They catered for us beautifully esp being vegetarian with wines to match and it was all delicious and we probably ate far too much! Enjoyed strolling around the farm and saw a new born lamb, plus horses and sheep and lots of poultry, plus massive veggie garden. Thoroughly recommend it. Wish it had been warmer to take advantage of the lovely pool.
Cons: Nada

Pros: Hostess speaks German well. Great restaurant downstairs with good food and very reasonable prices. Excellent location! Short walk to Thermas Chauves but that's a medical spa so it's not the same as thermal bath and spa centers in CH - e.g. medical review before you enter, much more expensive, water only 38 degrees.
Cons: You are in the center of a city, of course, so if you are concerned about noise from people on the street at night, ask for a room in the back.

Pros: The room was comfortable, warm and cozy. The bathroom was clean
Cons: All was good , but it would be better to have the breakfast downstairs and we had to walk to the other hotel to have breakfast. They only serve breakfast after 9.00 here. When it's 0°C outside it's a big inconvenient.

7.1 Good
Pros: Beautiful location and setting. Third time we have stayed here.
Cons: Was once a great hotel. The wonderful restaurant is now not in use. Small Taverna in the grounds which I was very disappointed in. Very tough veal steak first night and a cold Carbonara with gristle in the pancetta. Also the hotel seems not to have enough staff
9.2 Excellent
Pros: This was my second stay here. Very tastefully converted, it still keeps its old world charm. Quiet, comfortable and very central to the town.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Pool, old fortress walls, aviary
Cons: No hooks or Kleenex in bathroom. No drawers in room.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Pool bar
Cons: The Taverna restaurant was useless, never got what you asked for Massively overpriced spirits
7.9 Good
Pros: Great breakfast
Cons: A little over-renovated, the character has mostly gone
6.7 Good
Pros: Fab pool and perfect location
Cons: The restaurant was restricted to a large group of motorcycle riders (white rose?) ... other guests were “deported “ to the inferior “Tavern” where a low quality meal was served. Unfair and wrong.

Cons: Parking in front of hotel and garage is scarce and tight when hotel is full. Other option is to park in the back parking lot but there’s no entrance to the hotel, you have to walk up the stairs and around to the reception.

Pros: excellent value for money, room facilities were very good, comfy bed, mini bar in room, breakfast was very good, location for short walk into old town.
Cons: coffee facilities in room would be nice, parking was a bit limited BUT the hotel is under going a refurb so underground parking was closed.

Pros: Clean and modern hotel. Good choice of food for breakfast. 5 min walk into the centre which is very quiet.
Cons: The car parking area outside the hotel is full of potholes. Attention is needed to sort this out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice spread for breakfast. Lots of fresh fruits, cheeses, fresh breads, homemade jams and pasteries.
Cons: Didn't find anything to complain about.. Highly recomend..
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location good. Excellent breakfast. Good hotel.
7.5 Good
Cons: Worst hotel lunch I have ever had. Ordered steak with three sauces but the sauces failed to arrive and I was unable to get the attention of the staff. Furthermore the steak was obviously cooked on a very low heat hence no taste especially as the sauces never arrived. Also ordered drinks that never came. Husband got the wrong fish and it was cut in such a way that all the bones were left in it, making it almost inedible. They have my medal for the worst service ever.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really nice and clean rooms and the food in the restaurant was really good value.
Cons: The staff did not have a clue about making and selling drinks. One shot of brandy €10?? Prices for beers was different every time we got an order. When we asked why drink rates always very, we were told by the lady serving that "the price are at her discretion."
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel reception and rooms are very nice. Everywhere was very clean. We arrived by motorcycle and was allowed to park under cover right by the main entrance, there is also an underground garage if required. We would stay here again.
Cons: Not keen on the restaurant. Seemed a little unorganised.

Pros: It's a beautiful place. Rooms exceptional, all new, fresh & clean. The aircon actually worked & very well, even though not needed most of the night. WiFi also worked well.
