When you stay at Ancient Road Youth Hostel in Shangri-La, you'll be 11.9 mi (19.2 km) from Tiger Leaping Gorge. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Facilities, food, hiking trails, friendliness of staff, the views. If you're thinking of booking his hostel, just add him on WeChat and drop a line.
Cons: Luke's hostel can be found on the upper gorge, and is a truly fascinated place to do hikes from. Luke does not speak English, but it is very easy to communicate with him via the cell phone (Google translate or similar app). He's a great host and will do everything to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.
Pros: The walk over to the property, maintained by Luke himself, was the highlight of my hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge. Although, it is rather treacherous and overgrown in places so don’t attempt it without long sleeves and proper shoes!! The staff are very friendly and helpful, even though they don’t speak English. You can use a translator app to communicate if you don’t speak mandarin. They can book the busses to Shangri-La or Lijiang. The room was basic, but the bed was warm with a very thick duvet and electric mattress pad. My bed was a proper western style mattress with springs everything - a luxury I haven’t even encountered in the city hostels!! Towels are also provided in the room! While it is slightly more expensive than the other guest houses in the gorge, put it into perspective and it is still very good value for money!
Cons: The shared bathroom facilities could been cleaner. The toilet and the shower are in the same room and while it was perfectly clean for a toilet, it wasn’t that nice to have to shower over a dirty floor. There were shower slippers provided in the room however, so my feet didn’t actually have to touch the floor.
Pros: Luke's hostel is a fantastic place to stay instead of finishing your trek at Tina's guesthouse. Luke is happy to pick you up from where ever you need for free, and drop you off and the end of the your stay for a small fee. The views from his guesthouse are amazing and most of the food he cooks and serves is grown at the guesthouse. This is a must stay for anyone looking to wind down after hiking the Tiger leaping gorge
Cons: Luke doesn't understand english, but its easy enough to just use a translator on your phone
Pros: I booked a room that said private bathroom. When I arrived he said booking.com made a mistake. He eventually agreed to give me a room with a bathroom for the same price.
Cons: The location is in the middle of nowhere. No other guests. Food was terrible and way more expensive compared to other guest houses. Don’t stay here. The owners are nice, but the location is so bad. If I could do it over, I would stay at Tibet guest house. That’s where I got a bus from. And everyone there loved it.
Pros: Luke's is at a high elevation, and has nice views. It's also close to the end of Luke's Maintenance Road, which is a tricky but nice hike.
Cons: Luke's is off the beaten tourist path, and it's a bit tough to get to, but Luke will pick you up at Tina's if you call him. He'll be eager to act as tour guide and take you around the area if you want, too.
Pros: Incredible location and very friendly and helpful hosts. A Friend recommended this place to me and I am so grateful that they did.
Pros: Luke the owner and his wife are really wonderful people. They gave us lots of walnuts from their trees to eat and take away with us, their own homemade Barley wine, delicious buckwheat tea and a pan of coals to warm us when we first arrived. The place has an incredible view of the snowy peaks (when they are not hidden by mist) and is surrounded by walnut trees and vegetable plots. We upgraded to a better room with a private bathroom, because the shared bathroom is outside and it was raining very hard when we first got there (also the shared toilet is just a channel in the ground). Our room was perfect. The shower was hot and the bed had an electric blanket. The footpath that Luke maintains is a bit of an adventure, especially in the rain! A few hair-raising bits but a really fun path to do! Just under 4 hours from Halfway hostel. Luke gave us a ride down the mountain to Tina's which was very appreciated (it's very steep!)
Pros: It was amazing stay !
Pros: Lukes is an amazing little place off the beat and track towards the end of tiger leaping gorge. The food was delicious and views spectacular. It is a quiet spot when compared to Tinas and other guest houses on the gorge. It is a wonderful place to end the walk.
Cons: Neither Luke nor his wife speak English, but smiles and smart phone translators work a treat!
The Tina's Youth Hostel is an ideal choice for travelers who want to take in the sights and sounds of Shangri-La. This hotel makes a great place to kick back and relax after a long day of sightseeing. Travelers requiring pickup service can book this directly through the hotel. If you are looking for a convenient place to stay, our guests have told us that this location is excellent.
Pros: The location of this Hostel is not for the faint of heart. It is in a deep gorge in rugged Super high mountains at high elevation. If you like this kind of environment as I do, then it is the right place to stay.
Pros: The western and Chinese food was good.
Cons: Could be cleaner and have an AC.
Pros: Very conveniently located as the end point of a two-day hike; also very close to the entrance of one of the major scenic spots. Comfortable enough, with plenty of ok food to replenish yourself. Tina speaks basic English and allows you to send them your heavy luggage in advance, in the bus, so that you don't have to carry it while hiking (that would be a bad idea)
Pros: location location location... food ambience nice helpful staff easy bus to lijaing
Cons: Shower seemed to flood the whole bathroom and took a,while for hot water however small problem for such a fab location
Pros: The location is near to the Middle Leaping Gorge, and at the end of the hiking trail. The view is spectacular. Staffs speak adequate english, and very friendly.
Cons: No Halal restaurants nearby. We found used/opened condoms inside one of the drawers. Please be more careful after this. The water boiler is defective.
Pros: Staff very friendly.
Cons: The weather so cool because we all visit on January
Pros: The staff were very friendly and helpful at Tina’s and the food was great. Using Tina’s as a base for a couple of days was ideal and very easy with it being a drop off and collection point for buses in the gorge. My partner had a knee injury and we were unable to do the upper trail, so being on the lower road and centrally located worked well for us.
Cons: Although the room was spotless and the electric blankets appreciated, The beds were very hard and our shower quite cold.
When you stay at Tiger Leaping Gorge Tea-Horse Hotel in Shangri-La, you'll be 15 minutes by car from Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Pros: Hosts are super nice! Food is good! View is good from the property.
Pros: The views from my room were spectacular. The staff was friendly and polite. The electric blanket was toasty.
Pros: This was a good place to stay on the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike. We opted to visit the upper gorge viewing area first and then start hiking so we didn't go as far as most people on the first day which is the Halfway Guesthouse. We skipped hiking down to the river at the end of the hike (Tina's Guesthouse). The only thing about staying here is that the rooms are not heated and we were there in December so it was very cold in the room. With the heating pad on the bed we stayed warm enough and slept well but we both skipped the shower, just too cold even though there was hot water. There are other guesthouses but I'm not sure they have heat either. I thought December was a good time to hike otherwise. The food is the restaurant was good for some things but not good the others. We had the sweet and sour chicken which was very good. Breakfast was good but not included. Of course the views from the hotel are amazing!
Cons: No heat. They have electricity so why not offer a heater to plug in?
Pros: Everything was amazing! The bedroom was so much nicer than expected and the electric blankets kept us very warm! The family running the hostel were incredibly welcoming and cooked amazing food throughout the whole day - with an amazing menu! Couldn’t recommend more, the perfect place to break and not too busy!
Pros: The view from the room is superb! They help us to buy the ticket from Tina to Shangrila.
Pros: Wonderful place! Here's the best view. Now we can only get in by car, and can't walk in from Qiaotou. Anyway, I arrived at the tea horse guest house, the owner upgraded my room! OMG, the view on the second floor of the new building was really cool! I didn't do anything and look at the beautiful mountains. If weather is nice, you can see many stars at night. Also, it was useful electric mat on the bed:) The guest house was the best choice for tiger leaping gorge! Thank you so much host, you are so friendly>_<
Pros: Awesome location. Nice staff. Gave us extra water bottles. Electric blanket and mattress
Pros: Wonderful location in the middle of the gorges. The host takes care of her guests and cooks delicious plates, that I recommend you try!
Cons: The exterior bathroom is basic, but well, we are literally in the middle of the mountains.
