Adjacent to a golf course, Ariège Azimuth is a great choice for a stay in Mercus-Garrabet. After splashing around at the seasonal outdoor pool, you can unwind with a drink at the bar/lounge. A terrace and a garden are offered, and rooms at this upscale residence have conveniences like kitchens and washers/dryers.
Mme (the owner) was very happy to help us figure out plans for daily exscurions and had many regional brochures for area outings, hikes and other activities. SO MUCH to do in all directions from here: caves/grottes, Cathar chateaux, rafting, hiking, Pyrenees, etc. Foix also a scenic medical old town with it's own chateau, handy stores, etc. Besides eating at Auberge, we ate delicious galette/crêpe dinner at La Gaya restaurant (in old part of Foix)on Sunday when Auberge closed. We'll be back!
Pros: Very warm welcome, nicely decorated rooms, lovely outdoor terrace, excellent WiFi, sweet village 5 minutes west of Foix, close to Tarascon's pre-historic caves, Cathar Chateaux of Montsegur and Rocquefixade and many other excursions. Great dinner at hotel!
Cons: Bathrooms are typically small for an older building, but water temp and pressure ok, except in attic/top floor room. Parking is free, but a block away (not a big problem, just challenging the first time).
