Sand Castle is great if you want to get away and avoid tourist congestion. It is located outside the nearest town (Fredericksted) but within walking distance (it took about 15 minutes to walk to town). Their beachfront is great for swimming and snorkeling with several rock formations close to shore. I saw an incredible amount of awesome sea life while snorkeling including a sea turtle, pufferfish, and lionfish. The staff was very nice and accomodating and the rooms were nice. We were actually upgraded to a garden view room upon arrival which was a nice surprise. Rooms have tv, fridge, mini kitchenette, bathroom, king size bed, basically everything you need while you're there since most of the time is spent enjoying the beautiful St. Croix weather. I would recommend getting a rental car to explore the island unless you sit on the beach every day. As I said the hotel is a bit isolated. Cabs have reasonable prices but it adds up over the duration of the trip. Overall Sand Castle was very affordable and good bang for your buck!
We landed on the island after dark... Driving to Fredricksted after dark is really really creepy! The directions on the website was spot on, very easy to find! Fredricksted is definitely the old part of the island. The hotel has security guards and cameras so we felt very safe! The hotel stuff was really awesome too! The hotel restaurant was very good but closed Tuesday and Wednesday of our stay. Bruno was awesome! :) Ok here is my complaint.... Besides the sketchy neighborhood.... Our room was SMALL. It was on the 3rd floor (very narrow stairs). We had a queen size bed which took up 90% of the room. Plus side was there was a TV, microwave, a few dishes, and a small fridge. The bathroom had a nice shower but other than that was fairly small as well. We weren't in our room much so it wasn't that much of a concern BUT I never dreamed it would have been so small! Also the wifi only worked in the downstairs lobby. We toured every part of the island and this beach was BY FAR the calmest, most relaxed beach! It was more of an adult atmosphere.... I don't remember seeing any children which was nice since we went for our anniversary :) We would probably more than likely return here (and pay a little more for a bigger room)! Overall very please!!!!
The hotel is located on the west end of the island, where the nicest beaches are. It is really beautiful, right at the water and no other hotels around! Their food is very good (even though the breakfast buffet is disappointing, they don't offer any fruit, and not even cheese!), and the staff is super friendly (except Sheryl, who is super unfriendly and even mean in a way! Unfortunately she is one of the owners). I love Bruno the most, best entertainer ever and always in a good mood! Also the ladies at the reception helped out a lot, even borrowed us their mosquito spray because we had too many of them in our room and sprayed our room out! They cleaned our room every day and provided us with fresh towels every day. The location and the hotel itself is BEAUTIFUL and we will definitely come back!
On one of the best beaches on the island. Great sunset location and superb food!
I stayed here 15 years ago and several owners too. I always wanted to return and am so glad I did. Now I can not wait to return. Nice hotel, nice people, good food, perfect weather.
Sand Castle on the Beach, though not Truly remote, has the feel of a quiet beach. It is truly beachside, the beach only a few steps from any room. Cafe On The Beach, the restaurant associated with the hotel, is predominantly open air with a good chef, full bar, and great food. Complimentary continental breakfast. Beachside patios and swimming pool. Rooms were entirely adequate and the hotel staff was helpful, friendly and polite. We would have no problem making a second, and even longer visit than our initial 4 night stay Having a rental car is useful, as local taxis may take a few minutes to arrive. (In St. Croix traffic drives on the left side of the road, as in Britain.) The hotel staff was VERY HELPFUL in arranging for transportation, scuba or other side trips, etc.
I loved my stay at the sand castle Highly recommend it. The restaurant was outstanding. All of the staff was super nice and very helpful.
When we initially arrived we were bumped up into a larger room, which was a great surprise. Our room was nice and had a small balcony. We walked out and the pool was great, the view of the ocean was wonderful and the beach area seems to be the best in St. Croix. The hotel staff was slightly stand-offish at first, but warmed up towards the end of our stay. The restaurant on site is amazing. My husband and I both manage restaurants in New England and could not have been more pleased. Truly a talented chef. Do not count on the continental breakfast as it stayed exactly the same the entire week we were there and only consisted of bagels, muffins and stale croissants. ---certainly not approved by the prior mentioned chef. My suggestion is plan to rent a car. We attempted to walk downtown and were discouraged from doing so once it started getting dark. If you are interested in a night life you will want to head to the other side of the island. Overall, I cannot complain. I went there to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This hotel fit that to a tee. Enjoy!
Sand Castle on the Beach is an average resort on a beautiful beach. It has its good points and its not so good. The resort shows its age but that is not a bad thing, you feel like you are in the Caribbean of old, easy and uncluttered. We enjoyed the quiet easy living feel of the resort. The owners and staff were pleasant. Housekeeping did a fair job. Our accommodations were ok, the only major problem was that there is a water leak and we had to use towels to soak up the mess the entire trip. The continental breakfast was a disappointment, all carbs, no fruit, terrible juice, good coffee. I,m glad we upgraded to a room with a full kitchen so we could have a good breakfast to start our day. You will have make a .trip to the grocery store for provisions. The restaurant was good when it is open. The beach is fantastic.
Frm the moment we checked in until we checked out we were made to feel very welcome. Front desk staff were awesome. Room was well appointed, roomy and very comfortable. The only small negetive was that the dining facilities were closed on Tuesadys and there was a charity event on the Wed that necessitated our dning elsewhere or cooking for ourselves which was not a problem as we had a full kitchen. Also it is necessary to have a rental car if you want to explore at all as cab fares are very high. It cost us $30. to go a few blocks to a local gracery store.
Hotel was very basic. Hot water heated by the sun meant almost cold water in the mornig for showers. No one in the small pool under 16, so not kid friendly. Sits right on the road, so traffic noise throughout the night. However, the beach was good and the water clear.
Upgraded us to a junior suite which was a nice surprise. The restaurant is only open four days a week. Continental breakfast included. Must purchase your own drinking water. Property is well maintained and attractive. In a neighborhood with many dogs that bark all night.
Clean and comfortable with friendly, helpful staff. Good beach. Great food but the restaurant is not open everyday. Full size refrigerator so stock up. Live entertainment on some nights. A few things to note if you are safety conscious. There are no telephones in the rooms and some cell phones do not work. T-Mobile did not work on that part of the island. The front desk closes at 9pm. Therefore from 9pm to 9am you may not be able to contact anyone in the event of an emergency. Nothing around. Definitely need a vehicle.
