The staff at reception were exceptionally helpful, pleasant and polite.
The bedrooms need redecorating, sympathetically this time, to suit a Victorian hotel. Most of the rest of the hotel has original features and looks fine. It is near the centre of town and the High Street, not far from the railway station (just over half an hour to Edinburgh) and 5 minutes walk from the wonderful museum and Art Gallery. This has a great collection of paintings by William McTaggart and Samuel Peploe, John Lavery and jd Fergusson, amongst others - a great Art Gallery for a small town. The Snooker Club nearby and the Wedding Reception being held in the hotel were not a problem and any slight noise from cars arriving and people talking stopped before 1:00 am.

the reception staff was very welcoming and on meeting the housekeeping on way to hotel room the lady very kindly offered help and asked if there was anything further she could do for us ( she did not have to do this - it was much appreciated)
the lunch we had was very disappointing :( one of our dishes (chicken balmoral) was cold while my colleague had to choose a second choice as after the people on the next table to us complained about uncooked pastry the beef steak pie was no longer available- both of us were very disappointed with the meal .
