9.6 Excellent
Pros: The remote location far away from everything else and the vibe which comes with this. Expect a harder journey to get there.
Cons: Everything was perfect for me, I didn’t mind the cold water and the ongoing construction. It’s a pretty simple life in the jungle.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great place in the middle of nature.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A peaceful place in the middle of jungle! Good atmosphere, many people hang out at the lobby. We arrived late and there’s a guide waiting for us and walked in with us, they could carry your bag for 20Q if needed to. The day we did Semuc Champey we got back after dark. Mike sent people looking for us then guide us in that was very sweet. We’re not jungle type of travelers but I’m glad we did it, totally worth it.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Chi Bocol is tucked away in the middle of the jungle right next to the river. It can be quite challenging to get there but it is totally worth it. It is a good idea to wait for the hostelpickup and the guide-don‘t get on any other truck and do not agree for random people to lead you to the hostel. It is a beautiful location and the common area is really comfy with hammocks, benches, pillows and good music. I stayed in a tent equiped with a mattress a pillow and blankets which was totally fine but theres no luxury. There are also 2 dogs and a cat around. The family-style dinner is amazing and costs 50Q and the staff is really helpful! You can walk from the hostel to Semuc Champey and the caves in about 1hour. We really loved the tubing back to the hostel from Semuc Champey which can be booked through the hostel.
Cons: The only thing that I didn‘t like is the shuttle prices: I paid 225Q to Panajachel which includes the transport back to Lanquín (30Q). Other people in my bus paid 150- so I ended up paying 45Q
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Friendly staff. I had an issue with a purchase and the staff resolved it quickly and were very generous. The dinners were great! Comfy lounge area. Beautiful views. Tranquil. Friendly atmosphere. Close to semuc champay. Loved the property in general and the vibe at the hostel.
Cons: The spiders! No hot water. Both of these things were expected because it was a 30 minute hike from the road (:. I didn't like the scary dogs hiking in and out of the hostel. I was afraid to leave without a buddy. Thats the only reason I rated the location lower. I loved the location, I just was scared to hike out to the main road because of the dogs
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Best hostel we ever stayed at! Beautiful location, supernice staff and amazing food. If we wouldn’t have had limited time we would have stayed here for longer. Felt like home.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great vibes, good food, time flies
Cons: When it's rainy be prepared! Good shoes are a must.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Community kitchen where you can buy ingredients to cook was nice Dorms where comply Staff was nice and helpful
Cons: It’s quite a challenging walk with all of your luggage particularly at night and when it’s been raining. The place was ok but it wasn’t quite worth for me. I moved somewhere else and was much happier. The rooms are up an hill and the toilets and showers at the bottom and quite far to get to
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Love this place. The people here are very welcoming. Liah and Luisa run the place superbly. It's like a home from home. Def feel like you get away from the world here. Meals are amazing. Guides are great fun. Do the tubing down the river if you have time. The walk in to the hostel adds a sense of adventure and worth every step. I would give this place 20 out of 10 if I could. Don't hesitate to book.
Cons: Could not fault a thing. I've tried and tried to think of something but can't.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: I really enjoyed the ambiant of the hostel and being in the middle of the nature
Cons: I'm waiting to see the new path that leads to the bathrooms! The shower was cold but I was expecting this ;)
El Portal De Champey - Lanquín - Building
2
8.2 Excellent (725 reviews)
Overview Reviews

7.1 Good
Pros: Location was untouchable. Wow. Literally a minute walk from everything you want to see. Our cabaña had a cute little private patio right over the river. Their running tab system was convenient. They provide the first truck ride from Lanquin, and coordinate rides back (for Q20). Tubing the river was super beautiful and quite an experience (although it only lasts like 30 minutes)
Cons: The food... was like the kids menu from Shoney’s. Except expensive. And there’s not really any options nearby. Highly recommend getting food from the grills outside the park during the day. The rooms could have been super sexy, but the lighting was weird and the power situation was tricky.
6.3 Good
Pros: Great location, you can literally walk 2 min and enter the semuc champey park. They pick you up for free when you arrive at Lanquin to take you to the hotel. Nice views.
Cons: Although it is expected when you are in the middle of the “jungle”, electricity to charge your stuff only worked 6 hours a day. Other guests stayed up until 3 am drinking and making noise and the hotel staff didn’t do anything about it. The room was kinda stuffy and the window next to the bed had no doors. This meant there was a really uncomfortable cold breeze in my face the whole night. You pay for water refills.
7.0 Good
Pros: The location was great!
Cons: The food, ugh. Wayyyy overpriced, bad quality and only a few options. No free filtered water.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location at the entrance to Semuc Champey
Cons: Cold showers.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The scenery was amazing.
Cons: Beds were hard, no wifi.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The best location if you visit Semuc Champey in my opinion, due to it's position. Very friendly staff good food and very clean. We recommend you take at least 3 nights, we were sad to leave after 2 :)
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was impeccable! Everything was sooooo clean! All the staff were friendly and helpful.
Cons: The only improvement i could suggest would be the food menu.
6.0 Good
Pros: Very close to Semuc Champay
Cons: Very basic accommodations

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property! Comfortable beds, great dinner and breakfast. Very happy with my stay :)
7.1 Good
Pros: Lots of places to chill out, dorm room was clean, shower powerful, lunch was HUGE, good bar and sociable area, lovely & close to river & collection to go to Semuc by truck from outside
Cons: The toilet is a long way from the dorm, especially in the middle of the night. Everything was very damp but given you’re in the middle of the jungle I guess that’s to be expected and not really their fault. Communication for booking a shuttle to Coban was very confused and I wasn’t sure if it had or hadn’t been booked (not given a ticket or anything).
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful grounds. Good food. Descent bar. Okay dorms. Good staff.
Cons: Toilet and shower are a good hike up from dorm. No toilet or wash basin in dorm. Very few outlets. WiFi only at restaurant.
7.9 Good
Pros: The whole property is pretty, with garden and river access. Dinner served there is delicious and with a lot of vegetables. Bar is nice. The location is good, very close to the shuttle bus, they also sent someone to pick us up on arrival.
Cons: On the arrival the stuff only presented the tours they sell and showed me my bed, which made me later ask the guests around about anything else that was not obvious like dorm key use, location of bathrooms, bins etc. The top bed I got was noisy and I felt I woke up people around every time I moved. Next day I asked to change it though and the bottom one was fine. There were only two sockets for the entire dorm but some more in the restaurant. In the room and bathrooms there could be some hangers/shelves/lockers.
7.0 Good
Pros: Great river front property for chilling.
Cons: A little too much garbage in the river and on the property.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxed. Great tours and buffets. The beds were comfortable and there was a lot to do in and around the hostel. Excellent take away lunch options and fast breakfast and shuttle service. Too notch in every way imaginable.
Cons: The dorm bunk beds are high with no safety railings and expect noise from the bar until 11-11:30. But it’s not bad and easy to sleep anyway.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, right on the river. They organized tours to Semuc Champey (and other tours/activities) and also can arrange your shuttle on to the next destination. The food was good, Wifi in the common areas worked well. I booked a private room and had hot water and AC. I’d stay here again.
7.9 Good
Pros: Right on the river, could relax there all day on an off day from Semuc. Social environment. Laid back.
Cons: No hot water, I think I booked a 10-bed dorm bed and it ended up being 14 beds. The food is quite expensive and very mediocre.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good service, good breakfast, nice location, perfect tour guide - thanks
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing personnel Clean Decent food and good priced Beautiful cabins and view
Cons: Nothing
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great English speaking staff who go out of they way to help you with everything. Good (Mexican) food for lanquin standards with a few vegetarian options. Staff looked content and happy. The owner is local. Swimming pool has an awesome view in 3 directions. Exept for the back where they are building new rooms right now. Wifi is good, but only available in the restaurant. Bungalows are spaced far apart, so you only have to deal with your neighbours. Garden looks nice. Shower and toilet where kept clean. Lots of cool birds and insects around. Mosquito nets on all the beds. 15 Minute walk from Lanquin centre.
Cons: Zephyr Lodge is across the valley, and features loud music until 23:00-1:00 on some nights. There is forrest al around. So some other guests had cockroaches in their rooms. However the staff gave them another room without any trouble. They do their best to keep cockroaches out, and have locker boxes outside the rooms to keep your food in. All hotels in the area have the same problem. Some door hinges could use some oil. The neighbours door made a lot of noise. There is no screen in front of the windows, so you couldn't open them without letting critters in, and the room can get hot. The fan is too loud and powerfull to really use at night.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly, attentive, helpful hosts. Awesome swimming pool. Quick internet.
Cons: Loud music until late hours in the restaurant (can get toned down after asking). Simple showers with no hot water or hangers.
7.9 Good
Pros: The stuff was super friendly and the food was cheap and good! The view from the pool is amazing
Cons: The stairs to the dorms are steep and the dorms have no doors, only some mosquitoenets, that where not even big enough to cover the whole bed. Luckily I had my own one.
2.0 Mediocre
Pros: Location was good
Cons: First thing we’ve seen as we opened the door was a giant cockroach in the curtains. You could tell the floor was dirty, there were hair balls under the beds, etc Next day we were packing and we’ve seen 3 giant cockroaches again, one in the bed, one in the floor and one in the walls. Service in the kitchen is very slow and food is overpriced for what it is. Honestly one of the worst hostels i have ever been in.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great! Internet was really good at the restaurant and the location was amazing. We booked a private room with shared bathroom and everything was excellent! The staff was amazing and very helpful! Love it!
Cons: As many reviewers already said the music at the restaurant is loud till late night so be prepared. But everything else is breathtaking!

8.0 Excellent
Pros: A stunning place and I think we may have been upgraded for free! Lovely setting and friendly staff with a great view
Cons: The bed was a bit too hard and sheet was too small for two people. This place could definitely charge extra if they improved the beds (nice bedding) and put proper curtains in!
7.0 Good
Pros: Overall the place was nice. I would recommend more typical Guatemalan food on the menu
Cons: Our bathroom was very smelly and sink kept clogging.
10.0 Excellent

7.9 Good
Pros: Very nice hotel, compared to the poor state of the houses in the village. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Cons: Bed was litlle bit too small for westerners.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved it all. The beautiful gardens and great murals (look closely) around the gorgeous blue pool, the dining area/cafe and the rooms which were spread out in different buildings on various levels. The hummingbirds, butterflies and roaming chickens. The spacious balconies with hammocks and rocking chairs. The excellent service at reception and at the cafe and bar. The colourful monkey mural in my bedroom. The location in amongst local houses but only a short walk to ‘town’. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere amongst staff and guests.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was good and walking distance to lanquin with market and shops and cafes. The manager Paulina was extremely helpful and nice (and spoke English) they had a restaurant cat ‘oggi’ and some dogs. The pool was nice. Also the tour to semuc with Michael was nice! And my mom (65yo) did the caves as well! It was raining a lot when we were there, and we had a power cut, but I would have done it a thousand times again.
Cons: The food was simple
4.6 Okay
Pros: not expensive, good breakfast (not included)
Cons: not clean, no shelf in bathroom, whole room needs renovation, room very basic compared to similar hotels in Guatemala
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great room, hot shower. Food was good and reasonably priced which is good because there’s not many places to eat in town
Cons: Norhing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Aruma Eco-Hostal is one of the cleanest place that we stayed so far during our backpacking trip for 6 months... The location is perfect, you can even walk to Semuc Champey! The food is so delicious and the prices are worth money, the plates are big! The staff is very friendly, I had a stomach ache and they found a peppermint tea for me... They are available for any questions/help all the time! It is also very secured place, they have a lovely dog whom we loved so much! We definitely recommend this place who wants to explore Semuc Champey and around the region (by the way they are selling excursions like semuc champey, cacao farm etc and they are very organised so you do not need to book the tours in advance, they will help you immediately with all that!) We stayed at upstairs at a private room with shared bathroom and the bathrooms/toilets were always super clean! Thank you again for your great hospitality and we really hope to come back to Aruma Eco Hostal one day...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel received us without any problems, even at 3 in the morning simple breakfast comes at a price ... that's why I took a better one for a fee ... as usual, a Guatemalan coffee ...
Cons: you have to check the payment ... I had the impression that we paid for everything by booking ... but we had to do it at the hotel ... we had a disagreement with the owner ... everything was resolved
4.6 Okay
Pros: To stop the lies, and stop promising things that can’t be done. You’re just baiting people in for the business.
Cons: I was told my room was ready. I went to bed. I needed to use the restroom but had no toilet paper, no shampoo to shower or soap, no towels. I had to go ask for everything when it should of already been inside the room. It took 1 hour for our food to be served. The caves were promised for 2 days. We wasted half of day waiting when you could have been honest since day one. I don’t recommend it for a family because all I could smell at night was the weed and loud music.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is beautiful and the staff (and dog) are lovely
Cons: Eco is a word for “lack of facilities”. But in fairness it’s not the hotel ritz so
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing for the price. Great staff. Clean. Great location - walkable to Semuc Champey. Lovely dog (but do not let him follow you to Semuc because he isn't friendly with other dogs). The owner helped us organise transport to our next destination.
Cons: Very noisy roosters and general jungle noise but this isn't the fault of the property. The food was too salty for my taste. And not a huge amount of choice for vegetarians but this wasn't an issue for us because we only stayed 2 days and it's the jungle!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location is amazing. You are in the middle of the jungle, in a sparkling clean place where the staff are extremely helpful and accommodating. A nice selection for meals and big portions. What else do you need?
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and well kept hostel. Fresh all the time in toilets and showers. The dorm is airy and with clean fresh linen. The staff was amazing, very kind and always ready to help and make adjustments if necessary. Food was really good and more than enough. Supernice breakfast and many alternatives.
Cons: There was nothing we didn't like. We can imagine it can get crowded with 3 toilets and 3 showers if the dorm is full (15 beds) but there were only a few people so no problem at all. (And they are going to construct more houses to be finished before Easter)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice place, 45 minutes walk to semuc Champey, which is doable. Great staff (my Mother was worried about me and she reached them and they let me calm her down using their phone
Cons: The water is cold and no wifi but it's written on the conditions.
7.0 Good
Pros: Staff was super friendly and it was very clean at all.
Cons: It's literally in the middle of nowhere. Prices are doubled as in the City Lanquin. You are absolutely alone there, and if its raining, nothing to do else there. For some good, others would think it's very boring... As the rooms are into direction of the bar and restaurant, any louder laughing could disturb you.
