Beautiful outside decor, everyone very friendly, great breakfasts included! Could paddle board and fly board right in front of the resort. Loved all the sailboats in the lagoon. Had a lot more space then lots of others. Loved it all!

Clean, roomy, private balcony, and great place to lay on the lagoon beach and do nothing. Rooms were discounted to well below the competition. It's not located near anything ... 10E taxi to get to Marigot or a restaurant. You don't get the free breakfast with discounted rooms, even though the ads say you do. That's a 35E per day bump and there aren't other local option for breakfast.
The facility is updated in the rooms. I was moved to a top floor room that had a balcony facing the bay with a loft bedroom which was VERY nice. Staff was very accommodating and friendly. It is isolated from major activity centers. I had booked it from a description that indicated it had a shuttle. I was charged 18 € which isn't outrageous but was informed after I had paid the reservation. I was on a layover for a flight the next day and from the map looked closer in than it was. The facility grounds were dated but acceptable. I stayed on property for dinner and breakfast. Both were OK.
We spent a week at the Grand Case resort and were very pleased! There is a lovely restaurant overlooking the ocean which has a nice continental breakfast every morning. The chocolate croissants were great! There are also plenty of good restaurants in town within walking distance. Lots of idyllic views and hammocks to sit back and relax. The watersports office also offered plenty of activities. I would stay again.
GCBC became our 'go to' place on St. Martin. Have stayed there nine times since 2000. Many of the employees remember us. Have our 'spot' on the beach. Look forward to going there every year.
Front desk was very friendly and helpful in everything I asked of them. Room was clean and comfortable. The restaurant food was good and the staff was great.It is a quiet and restful place to stay. I stayed at Grand Case Beach Club for 5 nights with my SO, my sister and her SO, and my mother and we couldn't have had a better time. We were drawn to the french side of the island, St. Martin, because we wanted a relaxing, slower paced vacation than what the dutch side offers. The resort is beautiful. The grounds are clean and well manicured. The rooms are very clean, well maintained, and up to date. The staff are very helpful. The beaches, both the north and south stretches, are pristine and never crowded. The onsite restaurant, Sunset Cafe, consistently served great food; I would order from their specials always. They have convenient flags on the beach chairs so you can order a drink right on the water. I read some other reviews complaining how the billing for the cafe is separate from the resort. Not sure what the problem is. You simply let them know your room number and you settle the tab before you check out. Easy. While the resort is located in a nice little secluded pocket on the island, only a 5 minutes walk away is the Grand Case strip where there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, and lolos (island bbq joints). Everything else is a bus or taxi ride away (max 30 minutes to anywhere on the island, at least for us). The only thing I can think of one should be aware of when coming here is that the free continental breakfast isn't really so. At the cafe, you are greeted with free orange juice and baskets of bread rolls, but anything other than that is extra that must be purchased. But really, I'm splitting hairs here. Out of a trip of 6 days with a large family, this was an extremely pleasant stay. I will be staying here again in the future.
Steps away from the best restaurants in the Caribbean, we really enjoyed our stay in Grand Case. The rooms were clean and well maintained, but then again I really wasn't interested in the room and more in the great beaches right outside. The security was great as well making us feel safe in what happens to be uncertain times in the St. Maarten area.
Have returned to GCBC eight times in the past 11 years. We just love ST. Martin, and this property is just the right size for us. The staff members are all long time employees, and really are very caring, attentive people. The Monday managers cocktail party is something we look forward to, and get to socialize with other guests. Many great restaurants and shops within walking distance down in Grand Case. My wife and I have nothing but praise for GCBC. Hope to continue coming back for many years to come.
Celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary, we wanted a beautiful place in the sun to kick back and relax for a week. The hotel was adequate, clean, and comfortable, though nothing like the pictures on the website. The bathroom was in great need of an update . Thankfully, we had a kitchenette. The website raved about the wonderful places to eat on 'restaurant row' within walking distance and were looking forward to delicious, romantic evening meals. Unfortunately for us (only two people), a meal on restaurant row would have cost us about $100.....way too expensive for our budget. Nothing on the website prepared us for such extravagant prices. We ended up finding a small market, buying food, and cooking in the room. Not exactly how we wanted to spend our vacation or our anniversary but it did save us several hundred dollars on food. Good news, the staff cleaned the kitchen the next day while we were out on the beach. Bad news, ants invaded the kitchen during the night. We were also disappointed with St Martin itself. We expected a beautiful tropical island but it wasn't. Most of what we saw looked hurricane and poverty stricken. On restaurant row, the inside of the restaurants looked nice, but restaurant row itself looked like a slum, with trash everywhere and houses/buildings looking poverty stricken. We were also warned to be careful after dark. Would we go there again? Yes, because for the price it looked like a luxury resort compared to the rest of the island. But we'd be more prepared, know what to expect, and probably never leave the hotel grounds except to go to the market.
Has a nice beach, although smallish, with attentive beach attendants and great snorkling. Very nice on site restaurant and bar, but hotel's best feature is it's proximity to great dining within walking distance. Not cheap (especially if you have U.S dollars), but some of the best French and Italian food you'll ever have on an island. The hotel itself is in ok shape, flatscreen tvs in rooms and I-pod players, but bathrooms are small and if you're over 5'9' make sure you're not on the 3rd floor or you'll be hitting your head on the loft ceiling getting out of bed. Maid service was OK, but they're tight with the soap and towels, so stock up when you see them. Also, make sure you exchange your beach towels before noon, because for some reason they won't do it a minute after.
This beach resort is an excellent place to get away and relax. The location is on the boulevard strip, the 'hot place' in the town of grand chase. The staff was very friendly and very helpful which made my stay even more enjoyable. The rooms were always tidy bath towels and wash rags were changed everyday...beach towels were changed at request. At Grand Chase there goal is to make u comfortable and to accomadate for any circumstances you may have. Overall i am very happy with my stay at Grand Chase Beach Resort and i hopefully plan to return.
Grand Case Beach Club makes for a calm, even serene, destination for families and adults alike. Missing (though not missed) is a 'meet market' atmosphere where booze and hormones intermix. One goes to the Dutch side for this, and also for neon commercialism. This, our second time at Grand Case, proved as laid back and relaxing as the first, with fine dining on the premises or a stroll away in town. (tip: Bring US cash because some restaurants accept physical dollars on a par with the Euro)
This hotel was very friendly and welcoming. The beaches were small but perfect for a relaxing day. Would love to go back.
I've stayed in Grand Case before and I thought it was the best place in the Caribbean. Things have changed. Our room was in desperate need of some TLC. No one uses the pool. There was garbage in the water in front of our room. We went on an excursion to a small island -Prickly Pear ($$). The snorkleing was terrible. Everything is covered with sand and debris so not much lives there. The town of Grand Case is a disaster. The road is basically unpaved. Cars park on both sides of the narrow road. There is no sidewalk and the locals drive fast though the whole mess. We were nearly hit several times. I would have rather stayed in Orient bay or the Dutch side.
Central location. Nice design of the room. No icemaker in the hotel, and the tiny fridge in the room doesn't make ice well. Cable TV only gets one English language TV station. Only two pillows on the bed and two towels in the room.

Very central location, room was clean, cozy and contemporary. Cleaning staff was very friendly. A good room for 1 night prior to leaving. Airport was very close for the next days departure. Check in was impersonal. WiFi was very difficult to connect. Had to go outside on the balcony to connect and there not seating outside our room. Very stingy with towels, had to trade two to get two more.
On the plus side, the staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was large and clean. It was very quiet where we stayed, yet very easy to access the beach and nearby shops. On the down side, we had a bit of difficulty finding the resort at first, since it was not mentioned on any of the signs until you entered the village to which it belonged. Also wi-fi, while free, did not provide a strong signal unless you were right on top of the main office. We were also able to get a free breakfast every morning, however it only included bread, fruit salad, juice, and coffee. Eggs, cereal, or yogurt were all available at extra cost. And while our room was more than satisfactory (we booked a villa with pool view), I would advise against paying for an ocean view as we couldn't identify any such villa.
This was my second stay at Esmeralda and will continue to return! The deluxe rooms are well worth the small additional fee - close to the beach, etc. Having a small market within walking distance was nice, rum and groceries readily available! L'Astrolabe, the restaurant on the property, was excellent for dinner and reasonable with regard to the euro-dollar exchange rate. The beach is, of course, over the top! Very quiet on one end and busy at the other - something for everyone. Early morning walks on the beach were a perfect start to everyday! From the friendly staff to the villa style accommodations to Orient Beach, this was yet another perfect week in St. Martin!
Great location with a very short walk to the best beach on the Island. We rented a car in advance to be able to freely travel from the French to Dutch side.....roads can be bumpy but navigable. Food quality was excellent and diverse from road side grills to fancy French. Be sure to ask in advance what the dollar to euro rate is and when in doubt use a credit card (you should get a fair exchange).
My husband and I are in our late twenties. We stayed at Captain Oliver's for a few nights during a recent stay in St. Maarten. The rates were cheap and the hotel looked cozy. WOULD NOT GO BACK. While the sheets were clean, the room was dirty. Dirty floor, mold on the ceiling, very out of date and battered. The bed had a small hole in the side and the curtains on the door were very discolored--by dirt. I wore shoes in the room the entire time, because the floor looked gross. Don't get me wrong, we just wanted the basics as we planned to hit the beach most of the time. But, if you are looking for a clean room look elsewhere. I will say the pool and the restaurant looked very cool.
Captain Oliver's was a fantastic laid back resort. The serenity of the bungalow type rooms was perfect for a long romantic weekend! The charm of the resort and grounds made it a fun and unique place to hide out from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island. The staff were all very courteous and helpful. The location right on the border of the french and dutch side made it easy and quick to get wherever we wanted on the island. The pool may not be big or exotic or exciting, but it had character with the wall overlooking the bar! It made for some cute pictures for sure. The view from our balcony was incredible and romantic. We didn't eat at the restaurant but hopefully we'll be back and enjoy more time at the resort! If you are looking for simple charm, this is the resort for you!
Captain Oliver's is a laid back sea side resort that is elegant enough without being stuffy. The staff is phenomally friendly. the property is uniquely beautiful in an old fashioned, elegant way. This is a resort where you can spend a week doing nothing or doing everything.
In general, Captain Oliver's 'Resort' was a nice place to stay at. That said, if a warm (or hot) shower is something that is important to you, skip this place. The hot water was barely a trickle and you had to keep adjusting the amount of cold water to keep the temperature reasonable. Also, the TV only had 3 English speaking channels (TNT, HBO, and Nick I think). Once in a while you could listen to CNN, but more often than not, the audio was accompanied by loud clicks making it quite annoying. Other then the TV and the shower, this is a nice place - very clean and comfortable. The staff was very nice.
The hotel is surrounded by trees and feels like a residential area instead of an hotel. The restaurants and the shops on the premises were very reasonable and personable. The location is beautiful. We enjoyed being there and would stay there again. Staff was very helpful and friendly.
The staff was French with a basic English, The location is very nice. The rooms are a little old but descent. Internet only in the looby and the musquitos were wild. ( take some spray) Overall it was a good experience for the Value. St Marteen is not a low cost location.
Very nice hotel with live entertainment. However, I like to walk ealy in the morning and there is no place to walk. the water taxi to the beach only runs from 9am to 3pm, that is not enough hours. there is no beach to walk to. $30.00 each way to town by taxi is a bid much. there is no regular public transportation. Excellent seafood buffet.
Captain Oliver's is tucked away in a quiet lagoon with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. It's like being in your own little world. They have a fantastic breakfast buffet (which is complementary with the price of your room). If you do want to socialize and mingle with people all you have to do is go down to the bar or restaurant which is also part of the Resort, and they usually have some sort of live entertainment going on at the restaurant. We stay at Captain Oliver's every time we're on St. Martin, we love it!
Our room was dirty. The curtains that covered the sliding glass doors were soiled on the bottom. A thick layer of dirt covered them. There was mold growing in the ceiling of our room and a small hole in the side of our bed. On a positive note, the sheets were clean. We stayed for three nights. I will also say restaurant looked nice and fun, as well as the pool. However, if cleanliness is important to you--run.
The room was beautiful, the best I have seen in awhile. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom and shower were fabulous! Better than the 4 star hotels I have stayed in. I had the ocean view and my terrace was 30 feet from the shoreline of a small cove. I had the sound of the ocean and wind with the view of the hills and ocean. I watched the sun and moon rise over the point. It is very Caribbean, not a groomed, resort-type hotel. The staff was very friendlly and courteous.\nSome of the room amenities could be improved. There was no information on how to call any hotel services or the front desk, no room service menu and no alarm clock. I asked for an iron and ironing-board and had to retrieve it from the front desk. The hotel listed a sushi bar, which consisted of a few Sashimi items on the main restaurant menu, not really a Sushi bar. \nThe above issues aside, I loved this hotel. I visit St. Maarten every 3 months and will stay here every time!
If you're looking for luxury and modern amenities, this isn't the place for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for quaint, relaxing, old time Caribbean feel with killer views, this is just what the doctor ordered! The staff is always helpful and pleasant and ready to please. We have stayed here many times, and will continue to do so. We have stayed in many different hotels and resorts in the Caribbean, but this remains our favorite. They also have an excellent restaurant that serves a breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner, or if you'd just like to have a drink and look out into the lagoon, and enjoy the warm breeze, pull up a stool at the Iguana Bar and enjoy.
I have eaten at Captain Olivers Resort many times on past visits to the island so I was familiar with the location and layout. I had an extra night at the end of my trip so I chose Captain Oliver's. Nice quiet location, no traffic, pretty views, beautifu landscaping, and good all round service with friendly staff. The room had a private balcony with a nice view of the marina. The room itself was was more like a bungalow. For the price, what an absolute value. They even threw in two welcome drinks and breakfast. We ate dinner at the reataurant and were very pleased. \n\nI would definetely consider staying here again.

Our room had a locked door to an adjacent room, it was not very soundproof. We could hear our next door neighbors and upstairs neighbors. very noisy..bread,fruit cup and juice every day,For breakfast, same every day, no variety, it was included in price. beach was beautiful but,very crowded when they bussed people bused in from cruise ships. Not a romantic get away.Extremely rude chair and umbrella man on the beach, he should be canned. friendly staff at the resort, but no one went above and beyond, even on the day the resort had a water main break, and we were without water for an entire day. A complimentary drink or dinner would have been a nice gesture,..
The room was spectacular with a nice balcony to read and have a cocktail on. Only complaint was bed was a little soft, but I don't weigh a lot so not a big deal for me. Staff was super attentive to anything you asked for. Free Wi-fi which worked well for casual use. Breakfasts were very good and hotel is steps to the beach, the Kakao Beach bar, water sports, and a slew of restaurants in the village next door including Thai, French, and Italian cuisine. I did not want a crowded resort so this hideaway on Orient Beach was PERFECT. Arnauld, and Frank at the front desk were top notch. Beach towels every day, I locked my safe and they unlocked in minutes, printed my boarding pass...would not hesitate to go back here for a relaxing laid back stay...heaven.
I just returned from a week at the Alamanda and could not be happier with this hotel and location. It has everything I look for in a vacation accomodation, cleanliness, great staff, perfect location, easy access to beach and restaurants....... the Alamanda has it all!!
Great location on Orient beach No water pressure in shower. Bedding extremely uncomfortable, mattress and pillows hard as a rock. Very slow wifi internet
Wonderful location, friendly helpful staff. Beautiful view. Food was good. Could pay more attention to cleaning details. Continually brought glasses that were not clean. Also the room floor was sandy. Only had 2 bath towels in the room, and they do not provide beach towels.
What can I say? I've lived in Sint-Maarten on the Dutch side some years in the late eighties and early nineties and decided to visit the island, this time on the French side. We arrived in the early evening by car (rental) and must say it was somewhat difficult to find, even for someone who lived there once upon a time. Unfortunately also the checking in went somewhat array because when we arrived at about 19:00, there was no receptionist. After some searching and asking around it seemed that they close the reception at 18:00 and that they left the key in a drawer behind the counter. Once in the room, an hour or so later, we were pleasantly surprised. Spacious and with all the comfort one needs. The Lysol scent described is indeed present at first, but not unbearable. It's no five stars, but better than some pretentious 3-4 stars hotel I've stayed in. It's small and cozy, with restaurants and shopping right around the corner in the Orient Bay Village. The breakfast isn't much more than some croissants, juice, coffee, tea, cereal and bread, but if you can do without eggs and bacon, it's not all that different from your regular American continental breakfast and works just fine to get you started for the rest of the day. If you don't have a car (rental) and/or need to be in the Casino and Discotheque fast life area every day, the whole day, this place isn't for you. It's kind of outside the action area of both the Dutch and French side. If you're looking for a comfortable room, within a nice cozy and peaceful area, with a wonderful beach and pool for swimming and tanning, for not much money, this is the place to be. A car (rental) would be handy if you wish to travel into the town and surrounding area occasionally as well. The staff and service in general were great. If you really need to internet, there's wifi available around the (small) reception area. Worked just fine for me. Conclusion: This place is worth every penny for the price paid, and perhaps some more. ...
We have stayed at L'Hoste many times. Staff always friendly and helpful. Hotel is due for updating especially bathrooms and buildings around pool area. We are glad they moved breakfast to the beach area. Location is perfect since we enjoy beautiful Orient Beach ,and Orient village. TV service is fine. We will return .but pricing should reflect status of updating.
I believe I already wrote a summary about this hotel but for some reason can not find this. In short: this hotel is perfect if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars of night for a decent and comfortable hotel. It's small and cozy and offers everything needed for a comfortable stay for a very reasonable price. Although not easy to find, even if you're familiar with the island, but once found, it's a gem. Although no five stars, the room is spacious with all needed features. A king size bed, a working tv, spacious bathroom (with shower only) and a separate adjacent toilet. There is indeed a lisol scent in the beginning but that's not a deal breaker if you're not too picky. If there's anything I could say as a con it would be that there are no elevators and that the rooms could use some upgrading, but in general the room we had was more than fine. Shopping and dining are right around the corner and the beach is right at the hotel. No WiFi in the rooms but if you really need to be online, there's a cozy small reception area where you can internet. Guess this should also be possible if you have a room right above or close to the reception area. They furthermore have a continental breakfast included, which may not be more than croissants and a sandwich, with juice, coffee and tea, but this will work just fine for most people who don't need french toast or bacon and egg every day. It's a good and decent first meal to get your day started. The service was good and all the staff were friendly and greeted us sincerely. It's kind of far from the action if you're into casino's and the wild disco night life, but if you're looking for some peace and serenity in a beautiful environment and have rental car, this is the best place to be for the money. We had no issues at all with robbery, which I did ones when I stayed in Miami. Just use your common sense and all will be well. L'Hoste Hotel is an excellent value property just steps from beautiful Orient Beach. Rooms are studios with adequate furnishings and a small kitchenette. Every room has a small patio or balcony. Breakast at Madras is always good, and the hotel and restaurant staff are always pleasant and helpful. L'Hoste also has a small but very nice pool with great lounge chairs. Wi-fi is free in the lobby, but no Internet access in the rooms. This was my fourth stay at L'Hoste, and I continue to find this hotel a good value considering that it is right at the beach and a short walk to the restaurants and shops at Orient Bay Village. I've stayed here with my wife; I imagine that it would be fine for a family with one or two young children. Older children might feel confined to the extent that thay had to spend time in the room. The Hotel has re-decorated over the past few years. I found my roomto be rather drab with a brown-tan-beige color scheme. As part of their renovation, the hotel now provides great satellite TV with plenty of channels should you have to spend time indoors.
This is not our first visit to L'hoste. The staff remembers us and are most accommodating. DeDe (sp) is just delightful. He will help with any arrangements you need to make and always has a smile. The ladies serving the breakfast are very cordial in the morning. While the breakfast is the same every day (fruit, yogurt, juice, bread, croissants, coffee/tea) it's enough to get you going and it's always fresh. The rooms have been updated with flat screen TV's and many more US channels. The location to Orient Beach cannot be beat. If you are expecting 5 star quality this is not the place for you. However, if you want clean, comfortable and quaint, close to everything and walking distance to the beach you can't go wrong staying at L'Hoste.
The Hotel is in a good location and the staff were very helpful. Especially Jeremy who helped us with several issues. The free internet only works near the pool and not in the rooms. This is a wonderful location, but all resturants in the area are a bit pricier that those in the States. Expect to spend around $60 USD for a meal for two (e.g. burger, fries, soda and Pizza, bottled water). The room does have a stove and microwave, but most all grocery items are about twice the cost in the states, but it is an island and everything is imported. If you are looking for a nightlife, the dutch side of the island is better for you, If you want slow and quiet this is an excellent pick.
The place has a great location, right on Orient beach. Everybody in the Hotel were very friendly, from the front desk Kathy to the Bar/restaurant La Playa lour friend Yuma. Definetely I will stay again.
Great place to stay on Orient Beach. The staff were friendly and the breakfast poolside is a nice option. The room was spacious and comfortable, with cable channels around 45 or so available. The only negative was the beach help wouldn't serve us drinks, although they may not have been affiliated with the hotel itself.
This hotel was OK for the money - if you are just looking for a place to sleep this should do the trick. The pool was OK - a place to cool off when we were without water for the day/night because of town work on the roads. But beware - several of the tiles in the pool are broken and have very sharp edges which resulted in small laceration on my husband's arm. The resort was well kept but walkway to town was a little sketchy and not very well lit. This whole resort area is for people who like the beach - the nightlife is non-existant. But after a full day on the beautiful beaches in St. Martin - not much else is needed. A few nice restaurants in walking distance - and the food and service - exquisite!
This is a small cottage type dwelling with close proximate to the beach and a courtyard with shops. Although they have remodeled the rooms back 2 years ago, the beds are hard and the out doors are aging but well kept. The view from the balcony is not worth looking at. The staff is very friendly.
My husband and i had the most wonderfull time. By far this has been the best vacations in many years. Our second floor bed room was always kept very clean, and the bed was just fine. The open sliding glass door to our own private balcony over looking the guardens with the constint fresh ocean breeze was wonderfull. Inclued is the continental breakfest that is always very fresh and very good every morning. The lunch and dinner meals are also very good. The open dining area was always kept very clean at all times with the beautiful ocean views from your table. You also have beach chairs and unbrella that is also included in your room. We will be very thank full to Katie the hotel manager and her entire crew for being second to none. (We will be back sooner then later). Patty and Doug Sr. September 5, 2013
This was my husband's and my 3rd trip to St Martin (French side always!) but our 1st stay at L'Hoste. Kelly was at the front desk for most of our stay and she was very personable & helpful. She even let me use her computer to print our boarding passes the day before we left to come home. As has been said, if you want 5-star luxuries, this is not the place for you; however, if you want a nice, comfortable place that's right on the beach and is in walking distance of shopping (groceries to souveniers) & restaurants (highly recommend Safari Grill!!), you might want to give L'Hoste a chance. My one HUGE negative, and the reason for only a 2-star for cleanliness, is that both my husband and I were eaten up by bed bugs while there!! At first we thought we were being bitten by mosquitoes. As time went on, we were able to rule that out. Only as we were leaving and then after we got home did we finally realize 'who' the offender really was!! In fact, I found one of the little critters in my suitcase on a pair of my shorts!!!! I brought NOTHING into the house until I was able to put it directly into the washing machine. Also, even though we got home after midnight, both of us took the time to shower before going to bed. I stopped counting bites at 75 and my husband didn't even bother to try to count all of his after finding more than a dozen on his right forearm alone. Sounds crazy that I'd recommend this place, huh? But I do!! Other guests we met and with whom we became friends had no such problem with their rooms so I guess we just happened to get an infested bed. I'm hoping Kelly will take this up with the owners and head of housekeeping as soon as she reads who it's from and is able to determine which room has the guilty little buggers!!!!
