Pros: Cocoreto, heart lake retreats, is a cozy guesthouse, nice bunk beds, clean bathrooms/restrooms where is approximately 900 meters from Yushien gardan. It's superb to be here, the excellent place for set ur mind free from the busiest city. I arrived this guesthouse on the late night..after the check-in period but their lovely staff still waited for me. The owner & their staff gave me the very helpful informations (yeah...in english). With their help I could roam around Matsue city & Izumoshi without worrisome.  The owner showed me (& his guests) the stars over the lake that is surrounded by the mountains, Eshima Ohashi Bridge (江島大橋), Ebisu shrine, Yumihama beach. The weather in the morning was so fresh too
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Mackey, the host, is absolutely wonderful. His English is exelent. He has lived abroad and you can ask him all the questions about Japan you have accumulated during your journey. He was a wounderful host, who took great care of me, even showed me arround. The hostel is a bit remote, but there are buses from Matsue station every hour and it is only a short walk from Yuushien garden. If you are lucky you can also see beautiful Daison Vulcano close by. The hostel itself is new, spotless and very cosy. Bus timetable from Matsue station to the hostel: 1. Shuttle Bus (Direct to the island, takes 16 min.) (JR Matsue St.) (Yuushien Garden) 10:40 ------------> 11:05 12:05 ------------> 12:30 14:20 ------------> 14:45 2. Regular Local Bus (takes 45 to 52min.) 10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great views all around the guesthouse, with extremely friendly staff! Matsumoto-san was a very hospitable host, and recommended lots of places to explore and visit in Matsue and Izumo. Comfy beds with an awesome outdoor deck to look at stars and chill! :)
Cons: Do check the bus schedules from Matsue to the island - bus services end early on most days
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse is surrounded with the fields. You must love and enjoy the stay at guesthouse if you like natural environment. The toilet and bathroom are superior clean. The dorm bed is chic and well equipped with socket power and lamp. The bed, bed sheet and blanket are extraordinary clean without dust and dirt. The living room is well decorated and comfortable with warm style. There is open kitchen with well equipped kitchen ware. The host is nice and excellent. And he treats all guests like super VIP with all rounded services of providing extra warmer machine at night in winter; pick up services if you missed the last bus schedule and etc. This was the most beautiful guesthouse I ever experienced in travelling. Undoubtably i will stay again next time travelling in Matsue.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: What a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The guesthouse is a little far away from Matsue centre but it so calm and beautiful, I really recoment staying there. The bus connection is regular enough to not be a inconvenience. The Island is small enough to walk around and to enjoy the scenery. Thank you to the owner Mackey for making it a great stay. He provided all necessary information and even organised a small tripp to nearby Kaikeonsen, which was amazing. Thank you so much.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved staying at Cocoreto, it's such a special place: the hostel itself is very cosy, the area very rural, tranquil, and peaceful and yet easily connected by bus to Matsue and Sakaiminato (perfect place to stay to get to the ferry). And the owner Mackey is a wonderful person too. Thanks for the insightful conversations we had. I'll definitely come to stay again and explore more of the area. P.s. the Yuushien garden 8 mins walk from the hostel is excellent!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything about my stay at Cocoreto. The host Mackey is so nice and went above and beyond to help me. He answered all my questions and even showed me around the town. The guesthouse is so comfortable and the beds give you lots of privacy. It is very well designed. The area is nice too, very quiet and peaceful. I rented a bicycle and cycled around the island. The famous gardens are a few minutes away as well. I highly recommend this guesthouse!

8.3 Excellent
Pros: A very welcoming and pristine Japanese style inn. There was free parking for our motorcycles a few hundred metres away. The staff were warm and helpful. There was an impromptu shamisen performance on the evening of our stay.
Cons: The optional breakfast was only 550 yen and it was a quite special Japanese 'lunch box' style. Exceptional value. Just my preference, but I'm a coffee and toast for breakfast guy. There was coffee, but no other food options.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Worth every penny I paid. Great location and friendly staffs. easy access to nearby shrine and temple. Free tea and water at reception. Onsen is clean and comfortable. In short, not a bad stay.
Cons: I stayed in dormitory where I found super duper hot in the room even with air conditioning. This is due to the design of dormitory. I needed to open my fort for whole night because it was too hot to sleep. Reservation is needed for breakfast but the staffs did not mention it when I checked in. There is no place serving breakfast in town.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Really helpful staff. A huge private room , half Japanese tatami style and a Western style bed area with two very comfortable beds and a Western toilet. The hotel is situated in a natural hot spring area and the big attraction is the Japanese bath room. A really very good Japanese breakfast provided at a large communal breakfast table. Easy chairs and a large TV in the lobby area for evening relaxation as a group. Really good value for money.
Cons: No restaurant facilities on site, but a couple of restaurants within easy walking distance if you like Japanese food, which I do.
6.3 Good
Pros: Breakfast was Japanese-style. Every guest received a bento box at the counter.
Cons: No amenities in the room. And you have to lay your own futon at bedtime. Wifi was sketchy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was amazing !!! Nice people ! Great room. Onsen was really a bonus. Everything was perfect :)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: + Nice breakfast (I observe even guests of nearby hotels come to have one) + Reasonably lower price compared with nearby stays + Classic yet moden Japanese rooms well-equipped with amenities + The onsen water is hot enough to give a real onsen experience (Not many hotels can accompolish this) + Staff are polite and courteous + Chairs available aside from tatami is a plus
Cons: - Walls inbetween rooms and corridor are not soundproof - Although shuttle from JR Station is provided (indeed this is really good), the service ends at 7pm, which is a bit too early considering there are not much dining options and no convenience stores in the area
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Just a couple of minutes next to a bus stop with a free foot bath. Its Japanese breakfast is delicious at a reasonable price that no one should miss. Double room on second floor is spacious and comfortable. Only one guesthouse attendant is at front desk at one time but they are very polite and helpful. The common area on ground floor is comfortable as well.
5.8 Okay
Cons: the heater is not warm enough in the winter.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very upscale design for a guesthouse. The facilities were nice and it is located in the heart of the Onsen neighborhood. Very nice to walk along the river at night. Breakfast was great, but expect very traditional Japanese. Staff was warm and we even enjoyed some traditional Japanese music in the lobby. Only about 5-10% of guests are foreigners. We spoke Japanese and it was easy and a pleasure to talk with staff. English may be a bit of a struggle with some staff, but they are very kind and welcoming.
Cons: The Onsen bath was not warm enough in the evening. It was still in the process of warming at 9:30 that night. This is just a random issue. The next morning the Onsen was hot (almost too hot) and it felt great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfy rooms, good location, wonderful breakfast, reasonable price.
Cons: The onsen is a bit small, but that wasn't a big problem for me.

8.5 Excellent (156 reviews)
Overview Reviews
At Ohashikan, the wonderful view from guests' rooms of Lake Shinji and the Ohashi river in the mornings and evenings is simply exceptional. Located in the heart of Matsue, it is also in the perfect location for both business and sightseeing. Dinner and breakfast at the inn receive glowing praise, and the staff entertain guests with wholehearted hospitality.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: James, the manager goes out of his way to provide a wonderful stay for his guests.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The in-house restaurant is excellent. The hotel is nothing special but chef James’s cooking was very special and made our stay at the hotel very enjoyable. He’s a Samoan and is very keen in rugby so perhaps a great place to visit during the Rugby World Cup.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is perfect, half way between the train station and the castle. You can walk everywhere. Japanese tatami style bedrooms overlook the river on a very quiet street. Much nicer than all the hotels on the lake that are actually on a highway. There is an excellent restaurant in the hotel that serves delicious japanese breakfast with fresh products from the lake.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything except the food.there was no vegetarian food
Cons: You should cater for vegetarians.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely room and the ability to choose your Yukata was a great feature. The restaurant was full, unfortunately, so we had to go out for dinner; staff member Juko went a long way out of her way to help us choose a nearby place then accompanied us to help with the no-English menu! We really appreciated her help.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Dinner was exceptional. James is a great host. The river view is great. The room is very spacious.
Cons: Breakfast is impossible for western taste. Bathroom is nit great. The footons are not easy for westerns.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is a Ryokan and in excellent location to enjoy the historic part of Matsue - just a 10 minute walk to the castle etc. Staff were wonderful with service and help the best I have experienced. I will be returning to Matsue and certainly using Ohashikan again
Cons: Nothing
7.0 Good
Pros: Rooms have beautiful views overlooking the Ohashi river (in fact, clam fisherman come right up to the embankment of the hotel pulling up their haul). Staff is very friendly & hotel is laid back. Location can't be beat--lots of great restaurants within 400M. Basement onsen is very nice.
Cons: Hotel shows its age. Price seemed high relative to value.
10.0 Excellent

8.8 Excellent
Pros: the room is spacious and the view of the garden is good.
7.5 Good
Pros: The location is good and the onsen is quite nice.
Cons: The dinner was not up to our expectations. The food was not too fresh. Breakfast was in a big hall and it was very crowded. Food quality was not to our expectations too.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Unique, round-house design of public bath. Private bath available to all on first- come basis. Idyllic, garden-like retreat only minutes from train station. Typical ryokan-style room—tatami floors, shoes off, alcove with table & chairs for dining, futons on floor, low table with chair backs for sitting in the main room. Staff was incredibly solicitous & helpful. I am mobility-impaired & found the typical indoor slippers dangerously ill-fitting & too short, creating a fall risk. Several staff members rushed around to find me slippers that were long enough and snug-fitting. I was really grateful since my only alternative was barefoot on a knobby textured stone floor that HURT. Dinner was a several course Japanese meal served to us in our Yukata (cotton kimonos). Pleasant atmosphere, good food, kind staff, and walking distance to the station.
Cons: No complaints at all. Reasonably priced & comfortable.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and picture perfect staff are very helpful and friendly
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel and all of the staff are amazing and very accommodating. Even with the language barrier and my lack of Japanese the staff were amazing and more helpful than I could imagine. The hotel is very beautiful, the garden is breathtaking and I would not want to stay anywhere else but Gyokusen. I would recommend this hotel to everyone coming to Matsue.
Cons: I loved everything and would not change one thing about this hotel. It was an amazing experience.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - spacious and clean room - huge onsen - good buffet breakfast - friendly and helpful staff - free parking
Cons: - a little inconvenient to reach without a car
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel interior seems to be a bit outdated, but it is very well maintained. There is a very large Japanese zen garden at the back of the hotel, and some small river inside the hotel. The room was large, it fitted up to 4 adults very well with extra space for our luggage. The public baths were great, very large sized with 2 themes (wood & rock), and they were swapped everyday between the female & male, so we can experience both themes. Breakfast was plenty and delicious, the staff were very polite and helpful, location was excellent just on the riverbanks, where you can enjoy the Sakura Trees during the right times.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is very large and beautifully maintained, especially the huge Japanese garden that guests may walk through. There were a variety of baths to enjoy and the rooms were spacious and clean. The shuttle bus service from the station was very convenient. The food was excellent. There was an evening performance in the lounge area of local folk songs and dances, too, Wonderful experience.
Cons: Everything was great!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The spa was great, we enjoyed it a lot. The Japanese-style room was very cosy and we slept really well. The breakfast was generous and had a lavish variety of dishes.
Cons: There were no normal convenience stores close to the hotel. It was also a bit difficult to find a place to have dinner if you're not eating in the hotel. The staff do not really speak English but are very helpful and nice.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in a Japanese style room with a view of the gardens. Futons are more comfortable than I had imagined. The multi-course Japanese dinner was the best meal of our two week vacation. A relaxing soak in the spa topped off my day.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Manager who spoke english and French was most helpful and welcoming.
Cons: Would have preferred a buffet dinner and more western food at breakfast
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was amazing! Super fancy! They had bigger size of yukata that guests can wear. I’m a big person so I was super shocked they had varies sizes. Food was good! Staff was amazing. They did have someone that spoke English so that helped a lot.
Cons: The arcade/game section was very small. More like a little game corner. If you were above the karaoke rooms you can hear people sing. The karaoke rooms were on the first floor and I was in the third floor and I could hear the person sing perfectly. They need to invest in soundproofing those rooms.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very new Spacious Nicely contemporarily decorated Staff was helpful, welcoming Restaurant was excellent
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: Too small room size, no room bar, coffee bag
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I had a twin room for one person. It was large enough for one person. The room was clean. I recently stayed at a similar level hotel in Tokyo, and that Tokyo room had nicks and stains on the walls. The walls of Matsue Excel Tokyu were reassuringly clean and attractive. Nice linens. A view from the window. A small alarm clock that I could pick up and put beside my bed, i.e., not an alarm clock that was built into a bedside unit.
Cons: There was no bureau, only a place to hang clothes, with four hangers. There was a rack on which you could open a small suitcase. If there were two people staying for a few days, it would be difficult. (This is typical of rooms at this level of hotel, but still it's a minus.) The carpet looked rather worn. The brown color of the carpet was not particularly attractive. At 2000 yen, the breakfast seemed too expensive, so I did not buy the breakfast.
6.3 Good
Pros: Close to the station.
Cons: English language of the staff is below level. The staff is not very friendly!

Cons: Nothging
7.5 Good
Pros: very clean and good location
Cons: Expensive and breakfast not included
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Spacious room, double bed, very good bathroom, great location
