Pros: Because the hotel is so new, it's very clean and updated with modern features. The woman at the front desk was generous and helpful in answering our questions regarding best restaurants and details on Mount Rushmore.
Cons: Breakfast was just fine, nothing fancy. It's probably the only aspect I would want to be improved just because it's very pre-packaged, microwaved hot food, not freshly made this morning food.

7.1 Good
Pros: Driving up to this hotel you think- uh oh. I'm being transported back to the seventies. However, they have recently (and still in the process) of remodeling and the lobby and my room was really nice.
Cons: The air conditioning did not seem to work in my room, so that may not have been updated. The pool is really small and indoors, so. I wouldn't plan on this being a vacation getaway for the family. The gym is also very small for my needs. Working out is very important to me, so I had to go to the Y and pay $15 for an adequate facility for me.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: good location
Cons: We asked for 2 queen bed but we got 1 king bed and we were charged extra for the kids which were not mentioned during the reservation. very disappointed...
8.5 Excellent
Pros: Nice rooms, beautiful common areas, good breakfast. Next to lovely city park.
Cons: Pool is small, cold, and has too much chlorine. Also pet ($30) and extra bed fee ($15) are kinda high. Also a little to far out of the way (away from highway and downtown restaurants).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Ambience and decor of the room
Cons: Very loud noise from the lobby area came thru my room door until 10pm. Water wouldn't stay more than lukewarm in the shower. Informed front desk at checkout.they said sorry, we'll have to look into that.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Recent remodeling & updates.

Daily Mandatory Charge will be added to the room rate and includes: Destination Marketing Fee, paid to Destination Rapid City. Hotel Alex Johnson Rapid City, Curio Collection by Hilton combines an ideal location and a historic setting for a unique guest experience. The hotel has played host over the years to presidents and celebrities. Built in 1927, this quaint hotel combines the ambiance of the late 1920s with Native American art. When you enter the lobby and browse through the hotel, you’ll notice the ‘four sacred directions’ symbols, a tribute to the area’s Native American culture and beliefs. Also evident are a chandelier made to reflect a teepee, and hand-painted Sioux designs. Within walking distance are downtown Rapid City and Main Street Square with shops, restaurants, museums, and family activities. The historic Elks Theatre is next door. Mount Rushmore is a 25-minute drive away. Once you’ve spent time in the lobby learning about the history of the hotel, continue to your guest room to find historic charm combined with modern amenities. Rooms offer complimentary WiFi, 42-inch flat-screen TVs and coffee makers. Upgrade to a suite for more space, a microwave and fridge. All rooms include members-only access to Vertex Sky Bar. In the lobby, feed your sweet tooth with a truffle from Chubby Chipmunk Chocolates, and your coffee craving at Starbucks. Enjoy some pub food at Paddy O’Neill’s. Go to the top floor for a spectacular view of Rapid City, signature bar selections and a fine dining menu at Vertex Sky Bar. Host a business or social event for up to 200 attendees in our elegant setting.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed on the 8th floor and had a terrific view of downtown Rapid City, including the ice rink. I felt like I was in a Christmas movie watching the kids skate around. The Vertex is a very nice rooftop bat and it was nice to sit in front of the fire on the patio in mid December, enjoying the view without freezing,.
6.2 Good
Pros: great location in the middle of downtown Rapid City, within easy walking distance to a number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. The rooftop bar offers a great view of the town, the Black Hills, and sunsets. A few rooms have odd configurations (#19, split behind the elevators, sharing a bathroom 'Jack-and-Jill' style) that may benefit families or friends sharing a room.
Cons: The owners of this historic hotel have not invested in updating their property in a number of years, and it shows. The rooms are very small (standard Queen) - one room I stayed in had a desk that was completely unusable because there was not room to pull out the chair between the desk and the end of the bed. The "closet" was very small, only about 12" deep with only two hangers. In one room I stayed in, the closet door was firmly stuck shut, leaving me with no closet access. The bathrooms are so small that tall or large people may find them completely unusable. The A/C did not work consistently, regardless of the setting, and the drapes could not be pulled shut over the window to cut down on heat & light getting into the room. The carpets were filthy, with large red stains and decades of dirt grubbed into them. Staff are friendly enough, but so casual as to appear rude in many cases (multiple staff at the front desk.)
8.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff was great. I liked the location in the downtown area.
Cons: My room was a little small, but was kind of expected for a motel that old. Bathroom needed updated. Carpet & bathroom both seemed dirty
3.4 Mediocre
Pros: Downtown location.
Cons: Construction outside starting at 6:15! Dirty floors in lobby and elevators due to workers... with no attempt to clean it up. No kitchen. Generally chaotic and noisy. No thermostats in rooms: either heat and you cook or cold and you freeze. Sorry, just a bad property.
7.0 Good
Pros: I love staying in a historic hotel. The prices were a bit hight due to Sturgis week, but I wanted to stay and enjoy the history and elegance of the hotel. The location being smack dab in the middle of downtown Rapid City was more then convient! My room was well outfitted and beautifully decorated. Additionally, during my short stay, the staff had been very helpful and friendly.
Cons: The room was filthy. Now, I'm not at all a pick person and I understand "things happen" but in my mere 6hr overnight stay I encountered someone else's hair in the shower (stuck on the wall and in the drain), dirty bathroom mirrors (smears), a splinter in my foot from walking around barefoot, and dirt on my bed comforter. I rinsed the hair from the walls and ignored the drain, used other mirrors and kept my imagionation from wondering wild with speculations as to what the smears were, due to a lack of tweezers I had to squeeze and scratch the item out of my foot, and I shook the comforter out and brushed the dirt from the sheets. Oh, and I went to read the hotels room book, which offered a history write up of the hotel as well as points of interest in the area; the pages were stuck together and sticky. (I did get a bit grossed out by my sticky fingers). Additionally, the water temputure in the shower was continually inconsistent. For 30 min it ranged from scolding hot to ice cold. Continually back and forth hot then cold, hot then cold, the water never seemed to stabilize. I had about 5min of luke warm water to wash up with. The rest of the time I'd been standing there at the end of the shower spray at the back of the tub, trying to take a sponge bath. Very annoying. All of that aside, my final surprise came when I went to check out at 4a.m ,to grab a flight, and I inquired about a cup of coffee in the lobby. The (wonderful) front desk gal appoligised that they didn't have coffee in their lobby and that Seattles Best opened at 5 or 6. Not a big deal, but not what a traveler wanted to hear at 4a.m. :-) I did not notify the front desk of my annoyances because I had been just passing through and only needed a bed for the night. Also, as I said, things happen and I'm not overly picky. Brush off the annoyance and move on. Would I stay there again? Perhaps. I would check with the Adobe hotel down the street first and compare rates. If they were a bit more, I'd opt to pay the difference. If I did choose to stay at the Alex Johnson again, at the time of booking, I would mention my previous experience and ask that the room I reserve be checked by housekeeping prior to my arrival.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I accidently left an item in our room and called the next day. The staff found my item and shipped it back to me in perfect condition!
9.4 Excellent
Pros: The room was clean and quiet. We had our 9 month old with us and we didn't feel like we were intruding on the neighbors with his occasional cries like we did at some other hotels with paper thin walls. We didn't take advantage of the water park but it did look like it would be a lot of fun for kids.
Cons: The Breakfast could have been a little better.
4.2 Okay
Cons: The curtains in the room where shear and allowed all the light from the parking lot, interstate, and medical building to come thru. Made for a very long night, didn't even need to leave a light on to find the bathroom. It was also very loud could hear everyone in the hallways and surrounding rooms. Breakfast was OK but the staff couldn't keep up with the refills.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: A great value for the price!
Cons: A little bit of noise from the adjacent room in the middle of the night. The cleaning staff checked for vacancy around 09:30.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Desk staff Lucas and Greg were wonderful. Food was good.
8.5 Excellent
Pros: Easy to find, comfortable bed
3.4 Mediocre
Pros: We stayed there for one night. The bathroom smelled of cigarette smoke very badly. We mentioned it to the front desk and they didn't seem to care. One of the kids left the bathroom door open overnight and the room started to stink too. Yuck! We told the for t desk again in the morning and they said ok. Hmmm. The is suppose to be smoke free but doesn't seem like it. Please have housekeeping check rooms better, the smell was noticeable. This is not good. Yuck!
Cons: Bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke amd the front desk did not care.
2.8 Mediocre
Pros: Access to the water park
Cons: The bar and grill had almost none of the menu items. Food was poor quality. Lifeguards were more interested in cleaning up early than watching the kids. I had to jump in after my child was sucked into the lazy river. No lifeguard responded or offered to help afterward. The suite was so small that you could barely walk around the queen size bed. The closet could not open due to being blocked by the bed. Check in was at 4pm without exception which is much later than most other facilities.
8.2 Excellent
Pros: We stayed during a holiday weekend and the place was packed with families and tons of young children who were enjoying the water park. Our room was small for the price but the staff was fantastic- very professional and accommodating.
Cons: Kids were running in the halls late at night. Our next door neighbors were partying late which kept us up. Again probably just the holiday weekend.
7.7 Good
Pros: Water Park for the family and the grandchilldren Beds were comfy.
Cons: Rooms were smaller than what I anticipated for the price. My son and his family had to stat at the La Quinta since Fairfield is not pet friendly BUT his room was cheaper and the size of room was the same as the Fairfield Inn.

Pros: The location. Beautiful view of the city. The room was very basic but clean. Nice bed and pillows. Worked great as a place for sleeping when enjoying the area. Price was great!
Cons: The hot water ran out before my short shower was done and the tub/shower was oddly small.

Cons: Found trash between night stand and bed that house keeping must've missed, still hair on walls in shower, shower didn't drain good had water up to my ankles while showering, wall paper in the room was bubbled up coming off the wall everything needs updated also the duvet cover looked like it hadn't been changed dirty spots on it maybe they are just dingy idk but didn't look clean
10.0 Excellent

6.2 Good
Pros: Staff was friendly and nice.
Cons: Key card didn't work. Batteries in TV remote were dead. Only Decaf Coffee in the in room coffee maker.
5.4 Okay
Cons: They advertise low rates and then throw on what ended up being a 20% Destination Fee. That is false advertising. Go with other hotels in Rapid as they are at least honest in their advertised rates.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: It was clean and friendly service.
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Good value in the off-season. Probably not such a good value during the tourist season.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff....breakfast....proximity....again the staff couldn't be more helpful.
Cons: Could've been a little cleaner (the room everything else was clean) wasn't bad at all just knit picking.
4.5 Okay
Pros: King size room roomy, clean nice hot breakfast selection, shower pressure, retractable clothesline
Cons: Both "Hot" tubs were actually cool, my husband & I left it early to go back to our room to take a hot shower to warm up! Also wanted to go down the water slide but no water running or sign to instruct how to get it running. $$$ on snacks, not very friendly staff
9.4 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazing
Cons: Wish you had non dairy milk option for breakfast
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome water slide. Plenty of towels for the jacuzzi in the room. Breakfast deadline is not a hard cut off time, was able to sleep until 11am and still get the continental breakfast. Clean bathroom. Helpful staff when I lost my room key on the water slide.
Cons: Tv reception was awful, no point in having a tv in a room if you cannot see most channels. The 4th floor still had a view of a hill side parking lot. Toilet is very low to the ground.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The front desk staff were very helpful. We enjoyed our stay. Location to restaurants and shopping is perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was great, easy access to everything. Rooms were clean, service was tip notch. We got upgraded during our extended stay and were very pleased! We didn't get the chance to use the hot tubs or the pool, but they also looked great. The pool was huge.
9.4 Excellent
Pros: Very nice place to stay, well run and clean. Some early morning traffic noise but all in all a nice hotel. Would definitely stay there again
