Kids enjoyed the water slide immensely. The place was very clean and well kept. Decor is a little dated but the place is clean so I don't really care about that part of it. Would definitely go back if vacation takes us there again.
The front desk staff, lance was very rude. They should put someone more friendly in the front desk .
The kids (boys ages 11, 13, 14) loved the pool with slide. The AC in the room kept things cool when it was 100*+ outside. No AC in the halls, stairs, and many common areas. The AC in the rooms made enough noise to wake the dead (and all of our travelers). Their single printer was out of order (and judging by the sign had been for some time) so no boarding passes could be printed. The pillows resembled rocks. And there was a 1980 odor about the whole place. If it was a $50 a night spot, it would have been perfect, but at the current price point it is not worth it.
Our kids loved the water slide! The rooms were clean and staff nice.
It was clean and comfortable. Our girls loved the pool and slide. For the money we spent it would have been nice to have a complimentary hot breakfast. I called ahead to make sure we would have a fridge and microwave. We ended up bringing our own breakfast food.
Clean, good location Air conditioning, too much noisy
Clean. Well maintained rooms. No sigh of wear and tear. Staff very genuine and friendly. Answered all questions the bill was never fully explained as to why there was money reflected on the statement above and beyond what I agreed to pay. I was told the bill dose not reflect what the bank actually takes off Then it is up to me to later find out what really came off my card. It should reflect exactly the charges being taken out of the account. For easier bookkeeping if for no nother reason See above box for dislikes as Wii as the good points
Good price nice rooms
Everything was fine but the room was not real clean. The table was dirty yet and the lights has cobwebs on them. Beds were clean and very comfortable.
We really enjoyed our stay, kids loved the water slide and the staff was very nice. They kept our room really nice even when stuffed animals were in the blankets :) great location if you are seeing the badlands or Mount Rushmore, close to the freeway but not loud traffic noise. The walls were so thin. We could hear when the woman next to us coughed, her kids were laughing, when somebody even slightly raised their voice above normal level and when the baby cried. We may as well have shared a room. Luckily we are pretty heavy sleepers and for the price and location it was still a great stay.
It was it in a convenient location. It was very outdated, overpriced, did not have complimentary breakfast, and the people at the service desk were so slow.
Very clean, convienant, friendly staff Wis they provided some sort of breakfast.
It was clean and comfortable. Location is close to I-90 yet far enough from it so that you do not hear any road noise. The hotel sits behind another hotel so that traffic noise from the street is low. There is a mall on the other side of I-90 with plenty of places to eat. There is an Olive Garden there too. The gas station, Common Cents, is at the exit/enter ramp and has one of the best prices for gas nearby. Kids running along the hallways, not really the fault of the management. Noise from other rooms was moderate but still there. Strange light switch...only one light switch next to the door controlled all the lights. Therefore there was no way to just turn on/off the lights next to the bed.
They advertise low rates and then throw on what ended up being a 20% Destination Fee. That is false advertising. Go with other hotels in Rapid as they are at least honest in their advertised rates.
Staff....breakfast....proximity....again the staff couldn't be more helpful. Could've been a little cleaner (the room everything else was clean) wasn't bad at all just knit picking.
The front desk staff were very helpful. We enjoyed our stay. Location to restaurants and shopping is perfect.
Staff was friendly and nice. Key card didn't work. Batteries in TV remote were dead. Only Decaf Coffee in the in room coffee maker.
Good value in the off-season. Probably not such a good value during the tourist season.
Very nice place to stay, well run and clean. Some early morning traffic noise but all in all a nice hotel. Would definitely stay there again
The location was great, easy access to everything. Rooms were clean, service was tip notch. We got upgraded during our extended stay and were very pleased! We didn't get the chance to use the hot tubs or the pool, but they also looked great. The pool was huge.
Awesome water slide. Plenty of towels for the jacuzzi in the room. Breakfast deadline is not a hard cut off time, was able to sleep until 11am and still get the continental breakfast. Clean bathroom. Helpful staff when I lost my room key on the water slide. Tv reception was awful, no point in having a tv in a room if you cannot see most channels. The 4th floor still had a view of a hill side parking lot. Toilet is very low to the ground.
The staff were amazing Wish you had non dairy milk option for breakfast
It was clean and friendly service.
King size room roomy, clean nice hot breakfast selection, shower pressure, retractable clothesline Both "Hot" tubs were actually cool, my husband & I left it early to go back to our room to take a hot shower to warm up! Also wanted to go down the water slide but no water running or sign to instruct how to get it running. $$$ on snacks, not very friendly staff
the rooms were big and clean, the decoration effective but sparse, the beds were comfortable, the staff was friendly and helpful tile floors - while nice for cleanup, it makes it feel a little less cozy.
Location and access to local sights Room only cleaned once Free breakfast was very ordinary with same thing every day and canned fruit Service in the bar was awful we got our own drinks
Great location! Too many dogs to tolerate. A few might have been okay, but there were too many.
Bed was comfortable and room was clean Parking was an issue because they were selling parking to locals for an event not counting for guess parking, stayed on the eighth floor and is very noisy because of the bar sidewalk tables for the bar, The breakfast bar started running out of food two hours before the end of service both days we stayed there the servers obviously were picking tables they thought would tip better for service
Staff was nice. Place was interesting and apparently a lot of celebrities visited...in the 90s. It seems the place has declined since then despite some attempts to modernize. The ceiling in the bathroom was peeling and moldy. It was clear that someone had spilled pizza or some such substance on the desk and that it hadn't been cleaned. The floor had obviously not been swept There were quite a few breakfast offerings but eggs were ice cold.
Location in Downtown Rapid City Super friendly staff Great breakfast Room decor was horrible
Ellen, the hostess in the restaurant, was terrific. She made me feel so welcome each morning at breakfast. The bar was a dud.
I liked that it was close to downtown. The breakfast was very good. Beds were comfy. Rooms didnt have a refrigerator. Bathroom had a sliding glass door.
We stayed there for one night. The bathroom smelled of cigarette smoke very badly. We mentioned it to the front desk and they didn't seem to care. One of the kids left the bathroom door open overnight and the room started to stink too. Yuck! We told the for t desk again in the morning and they said ok. Hmmm. The is suppose to be smoke free but doesn't seem like it. Please have housekeeping check rooms better, the smell was noticeable. This is not good. Yuck! Bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke amd the front desk did not care.
Desk staff Lucas and Greg were wonderful. Food was good.
Access to the water park The bar and grill had almost none of the menu items. Food was poor quality. Lifeguards were more interested in cleaning up early than watching the kids. I had to jump in after my child was sucked into the lazy river. No lifeguard responded or offered to help afterward. The suite was so small that you could barely walk around the queen size bed. The closet could not open due to being blocked by the bed. Check in was at 4pm without exception which is much later than most other facilities.
The room was clean and quiet. We had our 9 month old with us and we didn't feel like we were intruding on the neighbors with his occasional cries like we did at some other hotels with paper thin walls. We didn't take advantage of the water park but it did look like it would be a lot of fun for kids. The Breakfast could have been a little better.
I accidently left an item in our room and called the next day. The staff found my item and shipped it back to me in perfect condition!
Water Park for the family and the grandchilldren Beds were comfy. Rooms were smaller than what I anticipated for the price. My son and his family had to stat at the La Quinta since Fairfield is not pet friendly BUT his room was cheaper and the size of room was the same as the Fairfield Inn.
The curtains in the room where shear and allowed all the light from the parking lot, interstate, and medical building to come thru. Made for a very long night, didn't even need to leave a light on to find the bathroom. It was also very loud could hear everyone in the hallways and surrounding rooms. Breakfast was OK but the staff couldn't keep up with the refills.
Easy to find, comfortable bed
We stayed during a holiday weekend and the place was packed with families and tons of young children who were enjoying the water park. Our room was small for the price but the staff was fantastic- very professional and accommodating. Kids were running in the halls late at night. Our next door neighbors were partying late which kept us up. Again probably just the holiday weekend.
Downtown location. Construction outside starting at 6:15! Dirty floors in lobby and elevators due to workers... with no attempt to clean it up. No kitchen. Generally chaotic and noisy. No thermostats in rooms: either heat and you cook or cold and you freeze. Sorry, just a bad property.
great location in the middle of downtown Rapid City, within easy walking distance to a number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. The rooftop bar offers a great view of the town, the Black Hills, and sunsets. A few rooms have odd configurations (#19, split behind the elevators, sharing a bathroom 'Jack-and-Jill' style) that may benefit families or friends sharing a room. The owners of this historic hotel have not invested in updating their property in a number of years, and it shows. The rooms are very small (standard Queen) - one room I stayed in had a desk that was completely unusable because there was not room to pull out the chair between the desk and the end of the bed. The "closet" was very small, only about 12" deep with only two hangers. In one room I stayed in, the closet door was firmly stuck shut, leaving me with no closet access. The bathrooms are so small that tall or large people may find them completely unusable. The A/C did not work consistently, regardless of the setting, and the drapes could not be pulled shut over the window to cut down on heat & light getting into the room. The carpets were filthy, with large red stains and decades of dirt grubbed into them. Staff are friendly enough, but so casual as to appear rude in many cases (multiple staff at the front desk.)
Staff was great. I liked the location in the downtown area. My room was a little small, but was kind of expected for a motel that old. Bathroom needed updated. Carpet & bathroom both seemed dirty
I love staying in a historic hotel. The prices were a bit hight due to Sturgis week, but I wanted to stay and enjoy the history and elegance of the hotel. The location being smack dab in the middle of downtown Rapid City was more then convient! My room was well outfitted and beautifully decorated. Additionally, during my short stay, the staff had been very helpful and friendly. The room was filthy. Now, I'm not at all a pick person and I understand "things happen" but in my mere 6hr overnight stay I encountered someone else's hair in the shower (stuck on the wall and in the drain), dirty bathroom mirrors (smears), a splinter in my foot from walking around barefoot, and dirt on my bed comforter. I rinsed the hair from the walls and ignored the drain, used other mirrors and kept my imagionation from wondering wild with speculations as to what the smears were, due to a lack of tweezers I had to squeeze and scratch the item out of my foot, and I shook the comforter out and brushed the dirt from the sheets. Oh, and I went to read the hotels room book, which offered a history write up of the hotel as well as points of interest in the area; the pages were stuck together and sticky. (I did get a bit grossed out by my sticky fingers). Additionally, the water temputure in the shower was continually inconsistent. For 30 min it ranged from scolding hot to ice cold. Continually back and forth hot then cold, hot then cold, the water never seemed to stabilize. I had about 5min of luke warm water to wash up with. The rest of the time I'd been standing there at the end of the shower spray at the back of the tub, trying to take a sponge bath. Very annoying. All of that aside, my final surprise came when I went to check out at 4a.m ,to grab a flight, and I inquired about a cup of coffee in the lobby. The (wonderful) front desk gal appoligised that they didn't have coffee in their lobby and that Seattles Best opened at 5 or 6. Not a big deal, but not what a traveler wanted to hear at 4a.m. :-) I did not notify the front desk of my annoyances because I had been just passing through and only needed a bed for the night. Also, as I said, things happen and I'm not overly picky. Brush off the annoyance and move on. Would I stay there again? Perhaps. I would check with the Adobe hotel down the street first and compare rates. If they were a bit more, I'd opt to pay the difference. If I did choose to stay at the Alex Johnson again, at the time of booking, I would mention my previous experience and ask that the room I reserve be checked by housekeeping prior to my arrival.
This is a nice clean hotel. It is underrated compared to similar hotels. Good value.
The rooms were clean and comfortable. The pool was heated to 84 degrees, which was so nice after the thunder storm moved threw moved threw. It is located in a great spot with a lot of restaurants close. The staff knew the best off the beaten path ways to get to Deadwood and Rushmore. For the price there isn't one thing I could complain about It was a great stay!!!
My two boys and i really enjoyed the hotel, the rooms, pool and staff :)
The woman at the front desk was incredibly helpful. When giving us our room number she gave parking suggestions including where to avoid as it was usually over-crowded. She was fantastic! The systems were down when we first showed up and we had to wait 15 minutes for them to reload. I don't imagine this being an issue for everyone however.
My room was large, well decorated and comfortable. I was very pleased with my stay. The front desk staff was efficient and friendly. The location so close to I90 was nice. There were restaurants nearby for dinner.
The room was perfect. Big, soft bed. Big TV. Lots of space and a very nice bathroom. The staff was so friendly and it was truly a great place to stay. They had breakfast but nothing hot. Cereal, bagels with toaster, orange juice and coffee. But this is a very small detail, I really liked this place.
friendly, a great value 2 nd floor walk-up
More choice for breakfast
I really liked it..
staff was ok old plumbing, took more than 5 minutes to get hot water. Breakfast was marginal at best. Room furnishings were worn and dated. Rug had a couple of patches in conspicuous places that were not well done. Center of curtain was hanging down from rod and was missing any means of holding it up..
It's was defiantly comfortable and clean but The AC unit was noisy and kept me up throughout the night so when I say comfortable it was until the AC unit started making noises!
Good value...clean rooms, friendly atmosphere..great location as a base for touring western SD.
The towels felt like sandpaper...plus confusion with staff at desk
Very good comfort and amenities, especially for the price. Only problem that we had was on our last day there was cigarette smoking going on in some room near ours.
Room was very large and the breakfast was great. Nothing
Great Location! The staff was very helpful and friendly! Clean and comfortable rooms!
The hotel was very clean. The room was exceptional! The breakfast provided was very good with many options. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was also great. It was close to two highways for easy travel to the attractions we wanted no
was clean old and outdated

Rooms were amazing!! Very large and clean!! Breakfast had a great selection. Centrally located to all the main attractions and easy to find. Really enjoyed our stay here. Highly recommend to others! Pool was too heavily chlorinated to use for longer than 25 minutes max - made it really hard for the kids because they wanted to go swimming but couldn't tolerate the burning eyes.
Cleanliness. Nope. The staff was amazing. I didn't know workers like that still existed AND you had more than one.
Great breakfast, very quiet rooms, convenient location, exceptional customer service. We needed to stay a bit past checkout and the staff was very kind and without hesitation allowed us to stay without any problems (or charges!). Will DEFINITELY be back. NO.
Ambience and decor of the room Very loud noise from the lobby area came thru my room door until 10pm. Water wouldn't stay more than lukewarm in the shower. Informed front desk at checkout.they said sorry, we'll have to look into that.
Driving up to this hotel you think- uh oh. I'm being transported back to the seventies. However, they have recently (and still in the process) of remodeling and the lobby and my room was really nice. The air conditioning did not seem to work in my room, so that may not have been updated. The pool is really small and indoors, so. I wouldn't plan on this being a vacation getaway for the family. The gym is also very small for my needs. Working out is very important to me, so I had to go to the Y and pay $15 for an adequate facility for me.
good location We asked for 2 queen bed but we got 1 king bed and we were charged extra for the kids which were not mentioned during the reservation. very disappointed...
Nice rooms, beautiful common areas, good breakfast. Next to lovely city park. Pool is small, cold, and has too much chlorine. Also pet ($30) and extra bed fee ($15) are kinda high. Also a little to far out of the way (away from highway and downtown restaurants).
Recent remodeling & updates.
I did not like anything! They dropped a dumpster outside my window 10 minutes after we checked in and started filling it with trash. When I asked to be moved to another room they stated they would have the manager call me and they never called me. I went down to the front desk several times, but there was always 5 people waiting to check in. I went back at 10:00pm and the manager was Extremely Rude!!! She stated I did not get to pick my room and dumpsters are normal. The staff was filling the dumpster at 6:30am the next day! We checked out 1 day before we were going to. The hotel was not full and they could have easily switched our room! I will never stay at a La Quinta Again! The restaurant was just as disappointing!!
Clean, easy to find, water park for the family, great restaurant in hotel, spacious and nice. No complaints.
we loved the water park no continental breakfast for my family
Restaurant was great, location was great. Waterpark was cool but super crowded. Couldn't check in til almost 6pm, tons of dead wasps inside sliding glass window in room.
Kids enjoyed the water park and pool. The rooms were overpriced and outdated. No refrigerator or microwave, this is a very big perk when traveling...the rest of our hotels on our trip had them and we paid less a night.
Hard working, 'importance of taking care of clients'. Location was nice as well. Design of motel probably the worst I've seen. Breakfast was so-so. Nephew and nieces loved the pool/waterslides. I personally thought it was not up to par, compared to other tourist towns. I'd be interested in investing with your partners, if you would make your motel, more like a 'Splash Lagoon'(Erie P.A.) thanks (email@example.com)
Like the building, the pool area, room was comfy, staff was very nice and helpful, good breakfast, slept awesome the beds were so comfortable Found trash between night stand and bed that house keeping must've missed, still hair on walls in shower, shower didn't drain good had water up to my ankles while showering, wall paper in the room was bubbled up coming off the wall everything needs updated also the duvet cover looked like it hadn't been changed dirty spots on it maybe they are just dingy idk but didn't look clean
Clean friendly staff! We all enjoyed staying here. Easy access to main highways and surrounded by stores and places to eat.
Clean facility and room. Staff friendly and helpful. Room not as nice or equipped (smaller room & no fridge) compared to other Hamp Inns we have stayed in.
The lobby was nice with several places to relax and have conversations. When our first room had a noise issue, the staff were eventually accommodating and moved us to a better room. The heating/air-conditioning system was very loud. The beds were not typical Hilton quality and the carpet was old and grungy.

Nice rooms. For a quiet night, get a room away from the pool on first floor.
Very easy access to Interstate/shopping. Nice big rooms, great food/buffet for breakfast, very pleasant staff. Very clean and quiet too!! Will stay again when in area The sink area in the bathroom could have had bigger counter area, we were in a ADA room maybe the standard room bathrooms are different. Other than that it was a great stay.
Adjustable beds! And the breakfast! No
Friendly staff, clean, near the highway Was a little hard to find
Very friendly staff and very well kept facility. The pool is small.
The beds are comfy and the hotel was clean and looked newly remodeled. Left 8 dollars on the table when I left one morning. The maids took it, not a big deal but its not like I left it intending for them to take it.
Nicely appointed rooms Nice lobby. you have to pay 10 for breakfast. Beds were hard look like sleep number beds that quit working did not adjust.
Clean and personable staff and establishment Walls are thin hear everything in next room
Nice and quiet away from traffic. Fairly new. Clean and great staff. Faile to clean my room on Sunday.
I booked online which was cheaper. We typically stay across the street at the baymont but thought we give this one a shot. Excellent service from the moment we checked in. I have four girls ages 5, 3, 3, and 1. They brought me a pack n play for my youngest. Beds and pillows were comfortable compared to previous stays at other hotels. There is a pool that we didn't get to try
It was off season. The room was cheap for the quality. Staff was friendly continental breakfast best for any free breakfast. One door key didn't work, had to go back to the desk to get it fixed.
Very satisfied with customer service from on the phone up to meeting the people at the front desk. Room was ready at a very convenient time and was comfortably clean and made the stay feel welcoming..the price was amazing as well for sure recommend this hotel and they will be receiving my business for many times in the future nothing at all
The hotel was overbooked... so we couldn't stay there. Fortunately Kayak found us another hotel to stay at. But the other hotel did not serve breakfast like we would have gotten at H Johnson's. The hotel was overbooked... so we couldn't stay there. Fortunately Kayak found us another hotel to stay at. But the other hotel did not serve breakfast like we would have gotten at H Johnson's.
Very clean, very friendly staff. the heater didn't keep the room at a constant temp, had to put on/of blankets all night.
Free Happy hour and breakfast.
convinient they charged me twice for the rooms
It was really easy to get to Mt. Rushmore and other attractions from here. The staff was friendly and helpful. We also enjoyed the free beer, wine, pop, and popcorn in the evening.
The owners were happy to meet us after hours when we checked in late. They showed us to our room and were extremely friendly. The breakfast was great and all of the workers were very nice. The room was amazing and extremely clean. This is a great place! I don't have anything to complain about. It was great!
That Marco's pizza was located in the hotel. Really convenient. The bed pillows were small.
All staff we had contact with was welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was hot and my 2yr old loved the waffles. She also loved the pool. We had a small issue with a stain on the sheets but it was resolved quickly by front desk staff.
Breakfast and pool were good. It was really loud. We could hear the people in the room above us walking around which was frustrating, especially in the morning
Front desk staff was very helpful and polite Housekeeping was subpar had to ask for coffee towels and proper room cleaning on several days
I loved how beautiful and clean the hotel was. Whe my husband and I walked through the front doors we both said wow this hotel is the best one we have stayed at. The staff were extremely friendly and even helped us decide on the best tourist attractions to go do. Omg the bed was so comfortable...I have back injuries and I slept so good at this hotel. I wish the hot tub jets would have been stronger but that's just a minor preference for me.
Breakfast was good and the desk staff were friendly. Heater would not work when we checked in and outside temp was in low teens and the heater air vents were very dirty, not good for asthma suffers. They switched us rooms but only offered $10 off for our troubles. Breakfast area was clean but cold as front doors were not working properly. We were on the 3rd floor and could hear dogs in rooms around us.
Very nice and helpful staff! Lack of grounded power outlets in room.
Friendly staff I slept well The refrigerator turned on 4 times an hour and was very loud which sometimes woke me up.
That the room was very quiet, clean, comfortable and easily accessed. I appreciated the staff as they were very friendly and helpful.
Desk staff was excellent. Very friendly, attentive. Breakfast had very limited choices. Breakfast staff was attentive and service was good, but could have had more and better choices than the boiled sausage and biscuits/gravy every day.
