great staff, good atmosphere, lovely recently refurbished room
Room was comfertable Service was terrible, as was breakfast and all very expensive for what it was
Room was immaculate
The reception staff made us very welcome, and was very helpful. The food was very good, sourced locally, and very attractively presented.. Will return, as we were impressed. I'm not sure that I liked the black carpet and wall decor, but the bed was extremely comfortable. Some damage needs repair in room corner, where vase is standing. Hand basin back not level and glass slipped off and smashed. Also, water in hand basin very slow to drain. Possibly blocked.
Location very convenient to me for my purpose that weekend. Lack of lighting/low lighting in room. No chair in room.
This hotel was a great find for me. The room I stayed in was decorated in a fab contemporary style. The hotel has new owners who are clearly making huge changes. The food in the restaurant is to die for what a great chef! Keep up the good work, this place will soon be in all the guides and I probably wont be able to get a reservation when I want it!
Driving up to The Olde Bull my first impressions were they it was a very old building but once I got inside it was quirky, fresh & just great. My room was amazing very pretty & well decorated & en-suit was gorgeous. You get what you pay for at £110 for 1night yes may of been a little pricey but when you get treated as well as we did it wasn't a problem. Me, my partner and friends ate in the restaurant and it was beautiful the food was top on it's league & staff couldn't do enough for us. Overall 10/10 all round. I loved the Olde Bull Inn, it was everything I wanted.
clean tidy and friendly.
Warm welcome and kind attention from friendly staff; nothing too much trouble. Food good, menus varied. Room comfortable & clean. Interesting historic building; renovation work in progress during our stay but did not disturb us. Will certainly stay there again. No
The room decor, lovely! Friendly staff.
Comfortable clean hotel, nice room - I would stay here again if doing business in the area. Bar prices a bit steep - £9 for a large glass of red wine!
nice quet location, stables next door a plus tv old and small
Very comfortable room. Friendly and helpful staff.
Good gym, sauna and swimming pool Temporary building work in progress until March
They let us check in early at no extra cost as our rooms were ready The bar drinks were very expensive
Friendly staff, good facilities, nice rooms
the whole thing .. gym swimming pool and restaurant
short stay as arrived at 0200 and left at 1100 but the night manager was excellent, I did email in advance to let them know I would be late. My bed was turned down, the manager made me some food VERY quickly and the service was second to none.
A first class Hotel in beautiful surroundings. As usual, it was a pleasure to stay at the Bedford Lodge Hotel. Staff are friendly but professional. The food is delicious !! There's nothing really to dislike, but it would have been nice to have a modern tv as this was really dated.
The Bedford Lodge was a lovely place to stay, the bed and room were comfortable and the staff couldn't have been more pleasant. The hotel has lovely grounds and nice fitness facilities. While there, I took advantage of the pool (unfortunately, the hot tub and sauna were undergoing renovation, but should be completed soon). I usually live out of my suitcase when I travel, but the room was clean enough that I felt comfortable placing clothes in the drawers, where, unfortunately, I left some of them. When I discovered this and called the hotel, they very promptly packed the left items and sent them off to me at my follow-on hotel, keeping me informed of the progress. It is easy to get to Cambridge from there and, if in the area, I would be happy to stay there again.
nice gym and pool nio tv in bar
Very pleasant countryside boutique style small hotel with attentive staff
We loved the room design, the quality entertainment equipment, the food was heavenly and in just the right portion size. The staff were most helpful. The scenery and views from the room were amazing.
Peaceful, good service, bar prices reasonable. Wine prices very high.
All good Need more than one fan. not adequate
Lovely clean very modern room, excellent food Not sure about the open plan bathroom facility.
Surroundings and excellent room design, it was a pleasure to stay at this place Only thing, there should be better internet wireless access (or cable instead) from the rooms
The room and the facilities in it. Some of the food was not quite of the standard I would have expected from prices.
Food, room and service
Nice hotel, service was good staff friendly Expensive for Mid Suffolk, meals and drinks very expensive. No double glazing therefore road noise was an issue.
Friendliness of staff, the location, the room, the food, pretty much everything. £225 per night on friday and saturday seemed a little expensive.
The food in particular No
Very good breakfast. We had a spacious and quiet en suite room. I gathered that this was a recently modernized or added room, and that there were other rooms that had not yet been upgraded to this standard. The modernized bathroom looked very smart, but the design was 'too clever by half': The washbasin had a plug, but you could only use it by unscrewing it from the base and turning it upside down over the plug hole. I prefer a shower that is not fixed into the ceiling but can be manually moved about. The shower cubicle floor was slippery: a health hazardThe way of getting hot water was gimmicky, and you have to read the instructions (for which you need your glasses). No hooks in the bathroom either. Pity to have spent so much money on such gimmicky installations. Some of the lights in the suite could not be switrched on or off separately.
Location was perfect, breakfast was enjoyable and tea and coffee making facilities were also appreciated. Bathroom was clean and comfortable. Bed was hard, in room 125 we did hear what sounded like kitchen staff outside in the court yard talking late at night but it might have been residents. When checking out I was going to be charged £160 per room (booked two) which is a total of £60 more than my advertised online fee. I questioned and was told I definately booked at £160 a room. I had to dig out my printed receipt for confirmation of £130 and although the lady on reception changed the price no apology was given. When we asked for our car we were told to go outside and find the car porter, not something we expected when comparing the quality of service prior to checking out.
Parking facilities very efficient Room comfortable and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful Was the hotel aiming for modern or old? We were disappointed by the aimbiance of the restaurant as we found the seating poor and the music too loud. The lounge area was also not very comforatble. Perhaps we remember the Angel of old. These are observations not complaints.
Lovely hotel, very good atmosphere.
the Portugese chap who whisked our car away on arrival and produced it again when we left
I would particularly commend Zoe as an excellent receptionist:smart, friendly and professional - an angel in fact!. The hotel itself is a rare example of a family run good quality hotel which is not run by a chain. My stay at this hotel transformed a necessary business trip into a real pleasure.
The staff were excellent, friendly, and competent. Also, I like the free wi-fi.
Modern design, great breakfast Only a pay and display car park
modern style of bedrooms - was able to have a room on the grond floor - great breakfast
Location close to our daughter living in Newmarket, whom we came to see. You the Booking Agent booked us into a Double Room, whereas we requested a Twin Room. We 70 year olds found this when we went up to the Room & found it a Double. Had to go back down, where Hotel impressed us by giving us a Family Room.
Initial reception. Waiter/waitress service. food quality Nothing
Water from shower was not hot.
Staff were excellent Long way from reception to the room. Breakfast could have had a better selection
The value for money and comfort
Good, clean and comfortable accomodation. Well situated at end of High Street. Excellent value for bed and breakfast. Polite and helpful staff.
The breakfast, and the location was central. The rooms were a bit dated, but still comfortable and pleasant.
Good service, polite staff
The bar and resaurant were stark and lacking in any atmosphere. The resaurant menu was poor and did not warrent a rosette.
Character In a room opposite the Wetherspoon pub on a Saturday night
Excessive traffic noise. The need to keep window closed made the room V. hot & stuffy.Public areas-bar & dining area were cold and didn't encourage a lingering meal or drink afterwards.Food surprisingly good in the evening but buffet breakfast poor &coffee awful,so much so we skipped breakfast on the 2nd morning (bought rumbout filter type coffee & fresh milk for use in our room instead) Receptionist tried to put a flat advance charge for meals/drinks through on my card upon arrival ! I suppose this indicates the average level of your customers. We wouldn't stay again. See above
easy to park large size vehicule bathrooms from 1980 internet acces not free of charge and impossible to get a connexion
Friendly and efficient staff
close to bury st edmunds breakfast / dinner in restaurant too expensive for choice offered
Good location for Bury St Edmunds. Comfortable rooms. Friendly staff.
The taps and shower that either scold you or freeze you and nothing inbetween and the atrocious attitude of the staff when I told them about it....'oh well, are you paying on the same card'...................
Booking in was easy, the rooms were a good size and presented well The restuarant experience was extremely poor.
Food was suprisingly good given the environment but the breakfast was very expensive for what it was The entire interior is in dire need of a make over and the location is right alongside the A14 so is very noisy day and night.
Couldn't fault this hotel
Breakfast was poor value
hotel staff very helpfull good breakfast good value for money and i would recomend , but sadly i hear its sold and is closing down so i will be unable to rebook this hotel again a steep walk up to the 3rd floor but there is a lift
The food was very good, if with little slow, and the staff were very friendly. The location by the river was pleasant. Doors, windows etc are starting to fall to bits. The sash window had to be propped open and the door handle came off in my hand!
The staff were very friendly and the hotel was in a lovely location. The only negative was that our room was slightly small for two people, but not uncomfortably so.
Location The bedroom and bathroom in need of facelift
when booking i asked for a twin room, which was confirmed. When i arrived at the hotel they had no twin rooms so my friend and i had to be in seperate rooms which was not so good
Very spacious rooms, which were very clean as was the whole hotel. Very pleasant. It was far too warm in the room meaning the windows had to be open thus making it quite noisy being positioned road side of the hotel. The tv was a little small and dated with minimal choice to watch.
Friendly staff and good breakfast Bed in our room was uncomfortable and the room was very warm even with the windows open
bed, breakfast shower not working unless you liked being boiled. No nuts or crisps behind bar , bar very ordinary o.k for one drink before going elsewhere
this hotel is closing as it has been taken over but the staff did not reflect this and were very helpfull. the room was extremly hot due to alot of hot water pipes under the floor we had the window open but this did not help. the deco was very drab.hopfully when it reopens we may try it again depending on the price. At presnt if it was not under change i do not think i could recommened it.
Friendly & helpful staff. Nice garden leading to river. Reasonable sized room. Room (and second floor in general) uncomfortably hot, made worse by street side being quite noisy with windows open.
Had to rearrange accomodation when Ely had no water supply. Thankfully was able to get a room at the Nyton. Room was cold. Sink was in the bedroom. Room was above bar, so quite noisy.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the food was excellent
Staff were friendly and accommodating. We had dinner at the hotel which was good as was the selection for breakfast. For visiting Ely the location is excellent very easy walking distance. The hotel is certainly not AA**** as stated. The general appearance is looking tired and dated the pictures on the web site do not reflect the current state of the hotel. We booked a double bedded room and ended up with a twin but the staff could not really explain why especially as they had only a few guests staying. This hotel could be really good it's location and the quality of the food offered is good, however, the service especially from the owner/manager was a little 'Faulty Towers' on occasion. I would reccommend it to friends but with the proviso that you 'take it as you find it' - interesting!.
Location. Faded elegance, which some would find charming.
Location and service The room was very hot. We shut down the radiator but failed to note that an electric heater was on at full blast. When sleep became impossible during the night, we realised what was happening, and turned off the heater. It then took 40 minuteas for the room to cool.
Accessibility A bit of Fawlty Towers about the hotel
This is a terrible place. The service was disgraceful. The man in charge was rude, arrogant and only interested in taking money. After our terrible experience here I would recommend this place to be shut down. I would tell anyone and everyone to steer well clear. It is very over priced and the staff are useless - we couldn't even get directions to the hotel from the so called reception.
Very nice room, but bath very small. Good location for discovering Ely. Breakfast service was slow (one poor school age girl on her own). Dinner was poor, web site advertises a lively new chef, his food was neither.
Excellent Dinner & Breakfast Room clean and tidy but a little dated
It was very welcoming and cosy. Quite a superb stay
Room was good and clean, breakfast was very good and the owners very friendly. Bathroom was very small and shower lacked power.
The owners were extreamly courtious, polite and friendly with a vast knowledge of the surrounding areas. It was an ideal base for a wonderful weekend.
Everything - very friendly welcome, spotlessly clean and comfortable, lovely breakfast.
The excellent service. No
The homely atmosphere and friendliness. Also the feeling that nothing was to much trouble.
Decent quailty food at breakfast. Lovely gardens with birds. Overly strict hours of arrival, breakfast and departure. A little more chintzy than expected. Tired decor. Breakfast ambience not relaxed. Cramped shower/toilet facilities.
Very friendly helpful landlady, lovely setting Can hear people in adjoining room very easy (thin walls)
What did i like best? The friendly disposition of the hosts above anything else, a lovely couple who really made you feel welcome. The room may have been quaint with a decorative taste perhaps not for everyones pallet but having stayed in a few hotels on my tavels Baileys definitely had personal touches which elevate it above the others. The room was a little cold and the t.v could have been a little bigger.
Warmest welcome and loveliest room; breakfast at their beautiful dining room was memorable too. I really hope to stay there again. I liked everything there, but if you are a busy traveller, it would be more convenient if you go there by your own car.
Good staff, good location - 'old school' hotel A bit scruffy...
A spotlessly clean room with very good facilities which ensured a most comfortable night's sleep.
Room was cold with the heating set to max. No heating in bathroom and v.cold. No hot water! Cold shower on was not good; you could stay a travellodge and get hot water! My breakfast order ended up on another table and had to re-ask for it twice.
A nice old hotel with a fine staircase, helpful staff and an excellent breakfast. Ideal for visiting the Cathedral. parking easy. Ready for redecoration.
Check-in and check-out were efficient. The room itself was clean. The spare blanket was in a protective plastic cover which was not aired, meaning the blanket had a stale smell. I know the hotel can't help it, but the cathedral near the hotel chimed every 15 minutes throughout the night. I suppose the hotel could have informed people of this in advance.
Clean tidy, staff very polite Needed wifi and spent 4 hrs without any success or help from staff. Very noisy due to traffic
Central location. A little noisy if your room was facing the street. Staff were very nice and helpful. A greater number of staff would have been an advantage.
Central location, free parking Lack of interest in my requirements (I asked for interlinked rooms, or at least next to each other, as we have kids of different ages - not only were we separated, but initially even on different floors...even though there were plenty of room available), high street noise and no air conditioning
Easy to get to on foot from the station and within walking distance of shops, restaurants and tourist attractions Staff were slghtly dismissive and I felt that aking me if I would like a cooked breakfast was an afterthought.
Central location, Noisy road outside bedroom during working hours
The only fault was that we did not realise that the radiator in the room had been turned off and therefor the room was on the cold side due to the time of year.
Good breakfasts. Comfortable bed. Warm room. Hotel did not fix shower head even after we asked twice. Window would not shut. TV signal was poor. Not happy that I was asked to pay for the room when I arrived, even though money had come out of my credit card account the week before. Not happy that we were asked to pay for breakfasts as hotel didnt think breakfasts were included when booked through Bokings.com. We had to show your email as proof as they had not been sent a copy of your email, allegedly.
I am disabled and there was always a disabled space for my car and the staff were friendly. The hotel room was not clean. On the surface it looked clean but when I laid on the bed the wall behind was covered in dust.
checking out evening restaurant service, crap
nothing due to the smell and unclean feel of the hotel we did not stay the night. the hotel needs some serious renovation. upon checking out (within an hour of checking in!) we were still charged the full amount despite stating the above
the hotel has good faccilities and our room was pleasant. Breakfast also good we were put in a room directly above a very loud party. The hotel refused to compensate us in any way for the fact that we couldn't sleep
Very large bathroom. Restaurant staff gave good service. Newspaper arrived early. No telephone in the room so although I was asked if I would like a wake up call it never arrived.
The staff were very friendly and efficient. Breakfast was great.Beds were comfortable and the rooms was lovely and clean. The room was fairly cold even though the radiator was on. The plumbing needs to be sorted. I tried to run a bath and only a trickle of water came out and that wasn't very hot. So,I tried the shower and it was the same.
Excellent value, good food, friendly hotel staff. Although efficient the bar staff could have been taught to smile.
The location, very good Hotel very run down, staff not very helpful, ive stayed at the bell three times over the years as we race at snetterton racetrack and each time the hotel looks a little tired,it needs a little tlc dont think we will stay next year.
would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.
The room was comortable and clean. There was plenty of parking space available. Although the breakfast was buffet style it was of a good quality. The room was a little cramped, the additional single bed, which we didn't need, didn't help. The service at breakfast, replenishing the buffet, was slow and tea wasn't offered. Having said this, given the fact that the waitress doubled up as the receptionist I thought that she did very well.
nothing at all not a very good experience, toilet and hot water not working.
Well situated for our requirement to go to " GO APE " for a sponsored event. Quiet and pecefull surroundings. Convenient for local shops, restaurants and pubs. Friendly and helpfull staff. Trouble free booking. Will neede updating in the very near future but still had character.
It was convenient to our place of business. The breakfast on the friday was poorly prepared and unpleasant. Saturday and Sunday were much better. Saturday night therev was a rather noisy Karaoke in the bar below our room. This is not the quality country hotel that the website suggests.
Comfortable Room remove the marquee, clean the windows, redecorate in places.
General atmosphere plenty of parking excellent breakfast position in the high street None
Very little Poor staff, dirty rooms, shocking food
Breakfast was nice Building needs lots of attention inside and outside. Some of the staff were pleasent. The one thing that was infuriating, was that some guests were out the front of the building smoking/drinking and shouting at the early hours of the morning and kept me awake until at least 2am, not funny when you have to be up at 6am!!! A complaint was made to a member of staff in the morning, and nothing was said by them.
Friendly staff very accomodating. Hotel needs updating old tired decoration.
The cottages are steeped in history, well equipped and Diane and Steve were marvellous hosts. I'll definitely stay there next time I'm planning a trip to the area.
Everything: the friendliness, the comfortable bed, the spacious and beautiful room, the wonderful breakfast includes free range eggs from the neighbourhood, home-made jam, and fresh fruit. Everything is suberb in this place. The owners know everything about hospitality. Five-star quality for a guest house price. Highly recommended to everyone who wants to get something special.
Warm, cosy excellent breakfast and a great effort has to been made to provide quality. The hosts are prepared to go the extra mile to ensure you have a great time. Hard to find on a dark foggy night due to poor signposting. That of course is a council issue and nothing to do with The Walnuts
The owners were very helpful and the cottage was warm and comfortable . Very good overall .
owners very helpful --helped us to find our way in the fog to their property-hope to see you at our holiday cottage in Sweden one day
Excellent hosts meant a very relaxing stay.
Excellent food at both breakfasts and dinners. Pleasant bar area.
Food and accommodation both excellent No
we found the hotel to be very welcoming with fiendly staff and a high level of service
Good size, clean and bright. No hot water in the morning! Apparently due to boiler malfunction...
The food was very good Our room had the shower cubicle separate from the toilet and hand basin room. This was not convenient.
Rural location, friendly staff and other guests.Excellent value for money on all counts.
It was really peaceful staying at the six bells hotel. We felt really relaxed after the weekend and look forward to returning soon. My only dislike about the room we stayed in was the mould in the bathroom.
The location is excellent, the food as first class and the staff very friendly and attentive
Nice setting,good room, good food
Fabulous food with a great choice! Made to feel welcome, staff were friendly without being "over the top".
Relaxed friendly atmosphere & lovely surroundings
I liked the quite location, the established atmosphere, the friendly staff and the quality of the breakfast. The shower screen did not fit properly so water leaked on to the floor and my first choice at breakfast (kippers) was unavailable.
Staff very friendly and helpful
The hotel was far enough from a main road to have the solitude that we required
The staff were very friendly and polite, the room was fantastic, beautiful views out of the room, very spacious On arrival to our room, there were loads of flies on our inside window, we had to chase them out, they obviously found the room very comfortable like ourselves !
Quite the room was cold and had to request a portable heater to warm it up
The staff and the food was very good The bed and the size of the room for the price. Paying £100 for a double room in the middle of nowhere I would expect a decent size bed. Not a 4 foot double bed. It was the most uncomfortable bed as well. The room was an attic room with very little window and the most horrible sisal carpeting which was like having the soles of your feet grated everytime you walked on it. However the room was clean and the ensuite more than expected.
Small and friendly, lovely room and facilities. Room was freezing and heating remote control had no instructions!! Took 6 hours to warm up room when control was eventually understood. booke superior double room but only one bath and hand towel was supplied (discovered too late to rectify problem) and not nearly enough coffee. Also no hairdryer!! With hindsight all of these problems could easily be rectified, but I think the staff should have been more thoughtful/helpful
The Staff Nothing
Fantastic room, stayed in the log cabin. Spacious and very clean. Very quiet, no noise from hotel. Absolutely Nothing!! Food, room and service were all excellent.
