You will find a kettle in the room. Guest Villa on the BI-CHI features free WiFi throughout the property. Guests will find a shared kitchen at the property. 8.3 Excellent
Pros: Owner is quite helpfull and knows English. Helped us find a car rental and even dropped us to rental office by his car. Modeen design, nice view, spacious shared kitchen.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A quiet and quaint area away from hustle and bustle. This home is modern yet a superb place to just chill and do nothing. The bus from Ryotsu Port takes about an hour. Ensure you have updated English bus timetable. I was given an old one by the office at the port. The restaurant owner organised a taxi as I had booked 7.20am jetfoil back and buses were not available for that departure. The food at restaurant downstairs cost me about $40 for 3 courses and cooked by a fine dining chef. I would 100% stay here again.
Cons: Nothing to do with the accomodation but the beach was more like rocky and pebbly cove. Might turn into more of a "beach" at different times of the year.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Felt like we were staying at “terrace house”. Shared facilities on a beautiful beach!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is fantastic. Good base for the Gold Mine (half day), Ogi area (half day), Gold Park (half day), Obata Shuzo (quater day). All could be accessed by the nearby Sawata BS. I loved the beach view and the kitchen for cooking. Had all my dinners at the dining room. The free bicycle was useful to explore the Sawata area and for a quick trip to the BS, though the seat of the bicycle was spoiled.
Cons: They ran out of body soap but did not top up. Everything has a Yen (¥) tag on it, for example, the towels provided have a Yen tag in Japanese and it was not clear if I could use it without additional costs. I stayed for 2 nights and it was only the third day that I realized that I could use it. Drip Coffee provided in the cabinet were expired.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location on the beach. Great amenities and cooking space.
Cons: Took about a 40 min bus ride from Ryotsu port. Would be best to drive if you can.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: After booking, the hotel staff contacted me and made our stay comfortable. On the ground floor, they run the famous restaurant "Seisuke next door". We enjoyed the awesome french dinner. The staff was kind and ready to help us. Great scenery of the beach from the beautiful public dining and living area on the guest house floor. The rooms (we booked 3 rooms) are chic and comfy. There are 3 shower rooms available which are enough for the members in 5 rooms.
Cons: The double rooms were a little bit small for 2 adults. On the contrary, the twin rooms were spacious enough for 2 or 3 people. The breakfast boxes were made of paulownia and we should use dishes to eat the contents and dishwashing was bothersome while quick traveling.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I've stayed at many places in Japan before, but hands down this is the best value for money place that I've ever stayed. Cozy and modern guest house with comfortable bed and lounge. The guest house is easy to locate as it's the only modern-look house in the area. You can see the beach from the lounge or balcony. Most people come with their cars, but I used public transport and still found the place accessible as it's only a few minutes away from Sawata Bus Station. The bike that Bi-ichi provided also made it easier for me to explore the nearby area. Check in and check out were smooth. Staffs are nice and helpful. I ordered the dinner and breakfast from Seisuke's Next Door which was awesome. Other guests prepared their own dinner in the spacious kitchen. So, dine in or dine out are not a problem here. The only thing that I regret is that I couldn't extend my stay there (blame my lack of preparation and JR for this, not Bi-ichi).
Cons: Other guests were a bit loud until past 12 am. Some quiet policy after 11 pm would be great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is beautiful!! They were very welcoming even if I didn't speak Japanese. The mattress and springs under the bed were all natural (I forgot the material but it's something unique lol). There's free wifi too. There are 2 toilets upstairs (1 for men and 1 for women), and 1 shared shower room upstairs. I think there are 2 more shower rooms downstairs and 2 toilets as well. All clean. I love their amenities. The shampoo, conditioner, and hair oil made my hair feel smoother. I wish they sell it too but it comes from a store in Niigata. Also, their skin care (facial wash, lotion/toner, and moisturizer) smell great. The view right in front of the guest house is nice, I wish I had come here when the weather was better though. There's a shared living room area and kitchen where you can just hang out and eat..or prepare your meals (you can put your groceries in the fridge). You can get water from a separate faucet in the kitchen...I think it has a filter/purifier for tap water. There's also a toaster, electric kettle, coffee, and tea. The restaurant at the 1st floor (Seisuke Next Door) is by reservation only. Meaning you have to inform them if you're having dinner at the restaurant beforehand. The ingredients are all fresh, I like how the chef explained the dish and some ingredients used. The bread served is also freshly baked and delicious.
Cons: I wish they also have hot breakfast. Like freshly cooked waffles and eggs with yogurt and fruits. Plus hot chocolate or coffee. :p
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Wide space, nice beach view! Me and my friend had wonderful 2 nights stay.
Cons: It’s located far away from the Ryotsu Port. But accessible with the main bus line (35mins) and it’s within 5 mins walking distance from the Sawata Bus station to the villa. Not much shops or restaurants nearby, Just grab your food / breaksfast before coming back to the villa is recommended. Bus is very limited as well, plan your time wisely. And the best is to rent a car and travel around the whole Sado Island.
Tabino Hotel Sado - Sado - Building
8.5 Excellent (481 reviews)
Overview Reviews

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staffs is very helpful and friendly.
6.8 Good
Pros: Centrally located on the island, with reasonable choice of restaurants and shops nearby (lots closed on a Monday, but we struck lucky with the Kato restaurant just across the road - really friendly and delicious home cooking). Modern and clean.
Cons: The room was very small - we had to move the desk chair out to make room for our suitcases. Beds narrow and pillows too small. The breakfast buffet only really had Japanese food - some fruit and yoghurt, at least, would have been nice.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable and clean, wonderful facilities with the public bath and appreciate all the amenities. Kind and helpful staff.
Cons: A little pricy but good quality.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Has restaurant and onsen onsite which was good.
Cons: All good.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was excellent. The hotel was new and clean. The room was very quiet. Very good bed. Reasonable price, too.
Cons: None
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything was pretty good, it was clean, the staff spoke english and were helpfull. The hot Bath was also very relaxing. In general a very nice hotel.
Cons: The breakfeast which om was cobsidered VERY GOOD. Was decent but nothing special. Also the free bike rental is fine for people under 180cm but while er had hoped to ride abit around on sado we had to cancel that as the bikes were much to small.
Sado Resort Hotel Azuma - Sado - Building
8.3 Excellent (253 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Sado, Azuma Yubaetei Kaiyotei is a 2-minute drive from Nanaura Beach and 6 minutes from Sado Magistrate's Office.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Incredible views, kind and hospitable staff, clean food made with natural local ingredients, top-not h onsen facilities.
Cons: Futon and pillow were not as comfortable as they could have been.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Private outdoor bath, fabulous. Great view to rough costline and open sea.
Cons: Kaiseki dinner was served in a room that was like school refectory, ridicuosly primitive place. Dinner itself was ok, but not better.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful view, beautiful hotel, rich with traditional Japanese culture, yet modern in functionality. The staff were really friendly and helpful despite minimal in English they were willing to do everything to communicate and help you. The room was big, nice and clean with beautiful Japan sea and cherry blossoms in the garden. There was a lot of food for breakfast and the lady in restaurant was so lovely and will put a smile on your face. There are variety of yukata to wear inside the hotel.
Cons: *not really dislike* but it is better to double check with the staff if the restaurant is open for dinner and prepare ahead if you want to hire private onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I honestly cannot say enough about our experience at Sado Azuma Hotel...The beautiful Aikawa area, the staff, the traditional Japanese room, the Kaiseki meals, the amazing views of the ocean, and the most gorgeous sunset we have ever seen! We are from Hawaii and we feel this sunset exceeded our beautiful sunsets by far! It is a little far from the Ryotsu port, we rented a car and it was well worth the drive. We highly highly recommend this hotel to everyone who is looking for a place to relax, get away from hustle and bustle, and experience this remarkable island and all it’s beauty.
Cons: It was perfect, there is nothing I would change!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The view was amazing. The ‘room’ was an entire suit including separate bedroom, lounge, enclosed balcony, bathroom, shower room, toilet and entrance hall. The onsen was superb.
Cons: The property was being renovated with associated daytime noise.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: View was spectacular
Cons: Kaiseki meals could have been better. Expected better rice considering that it was the land of rice.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is fantastic -- beautiful setting.
Cons: The management seems indifferently. When I contacted the hotel, I asked about making reservations for dinner since we weren't able book a meal plan. They told me that that shouldn't be a problem but when we arrived, on a Sunday evening, we were told we could not eat dinner at the hotel and that advance reservations were necessary. We were then told that we could call local restaurants and the hotel would drive us to the restaurant. The problem was was that none of the restaurants were open (we ended up taking food out at a local supermarket). What bothered me was that the management and staff knew that the restaurants would be closed and were disingenuous about this situation. Honesty and a real attempt to help us would have been appreciated, particularly since we weren't familiar with the area. A first-class hotel would have gone to real length to help its guests.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff was so kind even they made a mistake to loss our reservation. Therefore, they upgraded our room to top room with very excellent breakfast! The hot spring is good! The view from window of room was so fantasic!
Cons: The hotel lost our room and dinner reservation. Therefore, we had to go outside to looking for dinner even they helped us for transportation. They upgraded our room, but, the price when we checked-out was followed the original price from hotel, not the price we booked on website.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice hotel at a very beautiful location! The staff was very kind and always helpful. English speaking staff is available. Tasty, traditional ryokan breakfast which varies a bit every day. Two large indoor public bathrooms for men and women. Two small private open air bathrooms (for couples or families) are available for about 1.000 Yen for 50 minutes. Air condition in every room.
Cons: The hotel is a bit remote. To the nearest town (Aikawa) it's a 25 minutes walk. But the hotel is easily accessible by car!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely amazing service. The staff showed us to our very spacious tatami room and gave us a tour of the facilities. We had a room overlooking the bay, with a balcony, which was especially cool when a lightning storm rolled through. The hotel provides Yukata (a traditional Japanese robe) for each person. The Onsen was great, very relaxed atmosphere. Staff were always happy to help, and really made our stay special. The hotel is quite near to Kinpuku, which is a traditional Yakitori restaurant with a brilliant host. Final note on the service - we pulled up to the hotel during a rain shower, and one of the members of staff brought us an umbrella each, right to the car door. You can't get better than that. Highlight of our trip so far.
Cons: They could have had bigger slippers?
Ryokan Urashima - Sado - Building
8.5 Excellent (40 reviews)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The Manager Hariuchi San is a wonderful host; the property is new, comfortable spacious rooms, clean and bright facing the park. Dinner (we had French) and breakfast was very delicious. Onsen is across the road in the South Building, clean and relaxing. A morning and sunset walk around the corner along the sea is most enjoyable.
Cons: nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were great. Very helpful. Even when they can't converse very well in English they tried very hard to understand me and met my needs. Breakfast was great and dinner recommendation was excellent. Location is good but the property is across the street from the beach. So caution must be practiced when crossing the street. Love the building which is a nicely renovated warehouse.
Cons: Hard to dislike anything at this hotel. Ok maybe my room was a bit dusty and I thought the power sockets in the mezzanine where my bed was could have been more well placed. So instead of being able to charge my phone close to my bed, I had to walk across the room to switch off my alarm in the morning.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The public bath is really great. The food was delicious --- I will come back
Cons: For me it was not easy because I didn't rent a car, and I only firstly rode an electric bike from the hotel...SO in the beginning I didn't know how to use it. I found the light in the communal dining room very direct, it's the only remark I could have about the hotel, maybe to work with some filters to make the space cozy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location: the views from the room, the proximity to the ocean, the peace and quiet, the rural atmosphere, the sunshine Food: beautifully arranged, so many delicious flavours and varieties, fresh from the ocean right outside, elegant presentation Staff: Very friendly, helpful and courteous. Pros: The property is located next to the lake and thus very serene.
Cons: For onsen hotel, normally the rate is half board - including one breakfast and one dinner. But your room rate does not even include breakfast. The onsen area is very old and only one pool. Very poor comparing to other onsen hotels we had visited before.

Ryokan Kamomeso - Sado - Building
7.5 Good (34 reviews)
Overview Reviews
The Ryokan Kamomeso provides a great place for travelers to relax after a busy day. In terms of transportation, Sado Airport is approximately 21km away. Seeing the sights from this hotel is easy with Sado's attractions including Yajima/Kyojima and Sadokoku Ogi Minzoku Museum close by. At the end of a busy day, travelers can unwind and relax in the hotel or go out and enjoy the city. This hotel is one of the most popular choices in Sado.
6.8 Good
Pros: Room is spacious, and the scenery from the window is great! Dinner is a huge set, and crab is yummy. Onsen view is also good, with some bamboos outside the window. The environment is quite elegant.
Cons: Location is a bit far from town centre, though it takes only 10mins, but there's only limited lights at night. It is quite horrible to walk alone after sunset. And there're not many restaurant opens in the town, with no convenience store, and the supermarket nearby does not offer wide range of instant food, so catering is mainly depends on the hotel. I understand Sado is not big city, insect in the corridor is acceptable, BUT it's terrible to encounter one when you are bathing in the onsen...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Was within walking distance of Ogi Port and the tub boat rides. The hot springs were gorgeous and was in general great value for money.
8.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful and friendly, the rooms were clean, the on-sen which included a sauna, was good and the breafast was excellent. The location was very good even though it was not in the centre of Ogi, it was still only a few minutes to the town centre and to the Ferry Terminal - by foot. I liked that all the others who stayed in the hotel were Japanese and everyone made an effort to be as helpful and friendly as possible.
Cons: It took me a few nights to appreciate the beds i.e. futons, but once I did they were comfortable. The on-sen could have been larger. Given there was no bathroom with the room, I don't think that charging clients to use the on-sen to bathe was correct.
7.5 Good
Pros: Great location, rooms clean and comfortable, great onset, good japanese breakfast
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Fairly cheap ryokan. A little threadbare
Cons: Shower curtain was mildewy
7.5 Good
Pros: A little difficult to find when you have arrived by ferry and are on foot, but once found it's a good location.
5.5 Okay
Pros: Excellent Location
Cons: The hot spring was out of service due to the maintenance but they never inform us before we check-in

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The beat l breakfast was great as there were many different kinds of delicious foods to choose from. The best part was that the staff were very kind and help full. The hotel also allowed people with tattoos in the hot spring, wich was a great surprise as I was traveling with family that has some tattoos and they thought they would never have the opportunity to enter a Japanese hot spring.
Cons: The hotel was great but needed a lil bit of a deeper clean.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This was our first ryokan experience. We found it very enjoyable. The staff was incredibly patient and helpful in arranging transportation for sightseeing. Breakfast was very good. Cultural experience was fun.
Cons: The toilet and bath facilities for our room were a bit cramped.
Aokiya - Sado - Building
7.1 Good (101 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Sado, SADO RYOTSU SHIIZAKI ONSEN SUNSET&LAKE THE HOTEL AOKIYA is a 3-minute drive from Sado Steamship and 10 minutes from Toki no Mori Park. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Nice view~
Cons: I am greatly disappointed. This reservation was to celebrate my birthday. This hotel lied about it's accomodations. The room was unclean. The bathroom had 1950's linoleum and smelled of cigarettes. There was mold on the shower/bath walls and cobwebs on the door. The air conditioner clearly was unclean. Although the view was nice & the bedding confortable, the same would have been true if we had slept in the parking lot with fresh air to breathe. There was a rotary dial phone and a useless sandwich refrigerator both from decades ago. The breakfast that is pictured in the advertising is not what is provided. Being allergic to chicken & eggs, fish is my primary source of protein. We were given 2-3 bites (a tiny piece) of a fish. The outdoor theatre also pictured may have existed 5-10 years ago, but now is completely overgrown with brush and no access to it at all. The hotel next door adjacent to Aokiya obviously closed many years ago and the brush connects the two hotels. In short there is no advertised theatre. The lobby staff & kitchen staff were nice, however, this is without any doubt a clear bait and switch tactic of a hotel in violation of the laws of Japan and should not be condoned by Understanding the is not responsible for the information provided, if this had been my first experience with, it would be my last!
5.8 Okay
Pros: The breakfast was nice. And it's nice there's an onsen in the hotel.
Cons: The staff speaks next to no English which can be a problem for non Japanese people. The building is old and so are the rooms. At one point a woman knocked once and came straight into my room asking about something in Japanese.I was in nothing but my underwear, but she didn't seem to mind (so thats good). My Japanese wasn't good enough to understand, but it could not have been very important because I never heard about it again. It's quite expensive for what you get.
Hotel Shiiya - Sado - Building
6.9 Good (93 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Sado, Hotel Shiiya is a 3-minute drive from Sado Steamship and 8 minutes from Toki no Mori Park. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
7.5 Good
Pros: There are toilets inside the rooms, and the rooms are really nice Japanese-style rooms. Mine had a view of the lake, and one night I could watch fireworks being held in town and reflecting on the lake from my balcony. My room was also nice and quiet, and I was provided with free tea and Japanese snacks, in addition to a nice Japanese-style breakfast for which I had to pay a little extra (but that was totally worth it). Also, the place has good Air Conditioning, which is absolutely essential in Summer. As for Sado Island as a whole, I can only recommend it. It has beautiful nature and many cultural places such as Temples and Shrines. I was only there for 2 nights, which is definitely too short to explore all of the island. I would recommend a stay of at least 4 nights to see all the sights, possibly a week if you want to be more relaxed about it.
Cons: There was no shower in my room, and the WiFi was easily the worst I've ever experienced in a place that advertised free WiFi. The signal strength was so low that my laptop could only just receive it, and my mobile phone was usually better off using paid mobile data. This place could really do with some extra repeaters. It's also a bit out of the way, and there aren't any good places to get food from nearby apart from a HottoMotto Bento Shop. All things considered I feel it's a bit too expensive for what you get in return.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely onsen with perfect water temperature. Generous Japanese breakfast. Friendly staff who put themselves out to help you.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was great, a good selection of Japanese dishes with some Western favourites too. Recommended! The hotel staff helped us bring our luggage in too, which was much appreciated, some steps from the lobby to the elevator. We were travelling with a baby so had our hands full (and not travelling as light as I’m used to).
Cons: Not very appealing view of an industrial yard outside of our room. Not a big deal, but we wished it was more scenic.
7.0 Good
Pros: It’s close to the Sado ferry terminal. The price is descent. Breakfast was Japanese style. Not bad.
Cons: The shower water clog. One of the bed have a small bug. Probably flew in while we open the door. The bathroom has nothing to put clothes or towels. Very inconvenient.

Pros: Lake view was beautiful.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Sea view from window very nice. Size of rooms are large. Recommend highly to get a rental car to get to the property and to see Sado island atel car to
Cons: Hotel is dated and has seen better days.
6.8 Good
Pros: The Onsen. Was wonderful.
Cons: The restaurant was available only if you had a reservation no walk in. Staff was very nice but their knowledge of English was limited. It was
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Got the corner room which was amazing, but the toilet was malfunctioning.
Cons: The malfunctioning toilet!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Located right on Lake Kamo, such a beautiful view from the window. Peaceful area, lots of parking. Didn't eat there, which made the price SUPER affordable.
Cons: Communal baths are on the first floor, they have long hours, which is super helpful, open from early in the morning and stay open till late at night so you can get in your shower and bath.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Despite the equipments are old, they are all working correctly. The room was very comfortable and the vue on the lack was amazing! The staff is very kind and helpful: they made me feel I was a special guest. A free shuttle is available from the hotel to the port, every mornings, every 30min. From the port, you can send them a message informing the hotel about your arrival time by ferry and they will pick you up.
Cons: The hotel is a bit out dated. And the staff can be pushy sometimes.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The Sado Grand Hotel is a unique building with a lot of history; it was apparently constructed back in the day by a famous architect! To that end, once inside it’s like a time capsule back to Mod times, in a pretty cool way. The Onsen was quite nice, and the room was comfortable and had a great view. The staff were very nice and helpful!
Cons: I think that overall, the Sado Grand Hotel could benefit from a bit of a facelift. While it was a very clean place—don’t get me wrong—one does feel a sense of their stomach sinking as you approach the outside. From the outside, it looks imposingly old and run down, but once inside it’s quite fun.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazing. They were expecting my arrival, make the check-in process easy, and gave me recommendations. They were attentive to any need I had. Also, the room was huge and comfortable. I wish I could've stayed longer to enjoy the property more, but the incoming typhoon caused me to cut my trip short.
Cons: There is a shuttle, but it only takes you from the hotel to the airport. I had to catch a taxi to get to the hotel. Also, I could not locate any free wi-fi. They may have it, I don't know. I only tried to use it in the middle of the night. I had my own wi-fi, so no big deal.

5.0 Okay
Pros: The lady in the morning seemed nice, the showers were hot, and they give a lift to the port in the morning.
Cons: Complete communication breakdown - no Internet access meant that I had no map, and when I got lost trying to find the hostel I called. The old man who answered seemed a little deaf, and maybe Japanese was not good enough to understand shouted, slightly slurred ojisan, and he eventually just hung up on me. In the end I had to ask strangers walking home if they knew where it was. There is definitely no English spoken. The room itself was full of cobwebs and dust, and the floor was so uneven it was difficult to even stay on the futon without rolling off. The bath was kinda gross, but the showers ran hot and there was soap provided. The lady who was cleaning in the morning seemed very nice, but I think it was difficult for her to manage by herself. There are also only shoji shutters, so the rooms get light very early in summer, and walls are very thin so you can hear people talking and moving all night. I've stayed in much nicer places for less, and I've also stayed in similar old, minshuku buildings, where things like hospitality and charm made up for the age of the building; it would not be too difficult to improve this place, if anyone wanted to.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Not much. The lady that served me breakfast was nice but that's about it.
Cons: Don't bother staying here. Rang the ryokan to pick me up and had so much trouble communicating, had to ask someone at the ferry port to help. The old guy who came picked me up, smelled like he's wet his pants and it doesn't stop there. The place was run down, old and feral. There's stain on the paper door and the ceiling and the shared bathroom curtain, the shared basin has dirt everywhere, the shared bathroom has grime and mold and the bath water was lukewarm and had hair in it. the pj in the room smelled like fishy squid and the bedroom wall was paper thin and there was traditional Japanese music playing till late night. The guy told me the time he would drop me back to the ferry port, then he changed the time again and I had to immediately pack leave. Hard enough for me that can speak a bit Japanese, can't imagine what it'd be like to someone who can not speak Japanese at all. Fair to say it was the worse ryokan experience I ever had. To be quite honest, wouldn't even rate it as a ryokan! And oh, there's no western toilet, so if you are not used to using a hole in the ground, definitely don't go there.
