The staff was very friendly and the location is close for us (about 50 mins from our home in Maryland) which was nice unlike going to say the Homestead which is more like 3 hrs. The rooms were comfortable but a bit dated. I think had we gone during warmer months the pool and nearby hiking would have made for a more enjoyable experience.
The Bavarian Inn has been around for a long time but my wife and I had never been so we were excited to go along with some friends. The accommodations were a bit of a disappointment because depending on the site you are viewing it is made to appear that all/most of the rooms have a fireplace and a garden/spa tub. One of the bartenders actually told us he thought that was accurate. It is not. Our room was ok but was not a “high end” room by any means and there was hair in the shower which was disappointing. The rooms are comfortable albeit a bit dated. The restaurants on-site were fine but again, not what we were expecting in terms of high end cuisine. One other thing that struck us was all the restaurants essentially served the same food. The Rathskeller had the same menu as the “formal” dining room and the brewery/bar area off the lobby again, seemed to have a very similar menu. It would be nice if they had 3 distinct dining experiences depending on your mood.. bar very informal, Rathskeller more like a German brew haus and the formal dining area with a high end, exclusive dining experience. As for the grounds, it was cold so we unfortunately couldn’t really enjoy the lovely infinity pool overlooking the river which I’m sure is beautiful.
Disappointed in the food. Ordered a filet mignon and it was very dry! Bad cut of meat and a bit overcooked for the price.
The setting was nice
Clean room and bathroom
The location, the food, the hospitality, the staff were all great
There were numerous stink bugs in the room
The breakfast was delicious and very fresh. The location was superb, overlooking the Potomac. The inn followed a German theme without being overly cute. The grounds were lovely, even in the middle of winter.
I wish only the inn were closer to the interstate. We enjoyed a very good meal for dinner, though it was not exceptional.
Overlooking the Potomac River, the Bavarian Inn is an homage to German culture nestled just an hour away from both Washington D.C. and Baltimore. This picturesque, 72-guest room hotel lies in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, just across the border with Maryland.
This award-winning hotel goes for a European alpine lodge theme and has the comforting luxuries to go with it. Many, although not all, of the rooms feature a gas fireplace, whirlpool tubs, and large sitting areas. The Bavarian Inn also features special rooms that have views of either the Potomac River Bend or this historic Grey Stone Manor, built in 1930. For guests looking to truly indulge, the hotel offers both Royal and Presidential Suites, featuring amenities such as double-sized Jacuzzi bath tubs.
Of the hotel’s facilities, the centerpiece is the Infinity pool that looks out over the scenic Potomac River. Open only seasonally, the pool offers guests scenic views and relaxing recreation during the warmer months. The Grey Stone Manor also plays host to the Bavarian Inn’s renowned restaurant. Serving all three meals, the restaurant serves an award-winning mix of classic German food and comforting American fare. With a grand opening in 2019, the hotel’s newest addition is Bavarian Brothers Brewing, offering seasonal beers and matched small plates.
History buffs can enjoy the proximity of important Civil War battlefields of Antietam and Harpers Ferry. Other nearby activities include golfing and shopping in Shepherdstown historic German Street.
European elegance and a comforting alpine feel make the Bavarian Inn a relaxing retreat.
