Great to have a car to explore beaches and mountains. Avoid driving in Port town as there is road construction and it’s busy.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Naxos
A rental car is the best way to go around Naxos as there aren’t many taxis, and public transportation is infrequent and can’t take you to all the good spots around the island. With a car, you will be able to explore this Greek gem freely, visiting as many beaches as you please and exploring the ancient ruins at your own pace.
Naxos Island National Airport (JNX) is conveniently located less than 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) southwest of downtown Naxos. It serves mainly domestic flights coming from Athens International Airport. The terminal in itself is quite small, so you will quickly spot the rental car desks at the Arrivals Hall. Try booking your car in advance if visiting in the summer because of the high demand.
Naxos itself is very easy to navigate, even without a GPS, but beware that the roads are often narrow and you may encounter several switchbacks with no guardrails. However, as long as you are alert, there are rarely any precarious situations as the speed limits are very low on the island and drivers are typically patient. Keep an eye out for one-way streets in town.
Naxos really doesn't experience a rush hour per se, but during peak season the roads around the island are more crowded from around 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., as that's when people head to the beach. Downtown may be busier during summer too, but aside from Naxos’ center you’ll find that driving around the island is a pleasant and traffic-free experience.
To rent a car in Naxos, you must provide your regular driver’s license, a photo ID or a passport, and a credit card. For your driver’s license to be deemed acceptable, you must have held it for a period not shorter than 12 months. On the other hand, for your credit card to be considered valid, it must be in your name and the address it is registered under must be your current one. If you don’t hold a driver’s license from an EU country or one of the countries excluded from the requirement of an International Driving Permit, you will also need an IDP. Ensure that you get your IDP prior to your trip, as Greece doesn’t offer IDPs to foreigners.
If you want to rent a car from one of the Naxos car rentals, note that Greeks drive on the right-hand side of the road, like in the U.S. Seatbelts are a must for all passengers, not just those seated in the front seats. When driving in the rural areas outside Naxos, try to reach your destination before nightfall because roads in rural areas are not well-lit. In case it's raining, you should follow routes followed by the majority of cars, since routes filled with potholes are usually not used by locals when raining. Drivers in Naxos, and in Greece in general, don’t normally stop at crosswalks. Hence, if you do, you risk getting hit from behind.
In Naxos, only children older than 12 years and taller than 4 ft 5 in can sit in the front seat of a vehicle and wear an adult seat belt. Children under the age of 3 must be seated in appropriate infant car seats, while those between 3 and 11 must be seated in proper booster seats. If you intend to drive the car rental you hire with your child on board, ensure that you carry your own child seat or rent one from your agency before leaving.
