Pros: The car was great and super clean. The gentleman who helped check us in was really friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, when we checked in he was the only person working and thus there was quite a long wait for us to check in but as soon as he got to us he was really efficient.Cons: We called to extend the car by a few hours and when we went to return the shop was closed with no drop box or instructions of what do to. I was able to get in touch with someone who was very helpful and told me to return in the morning. When I returned the following morning there was a massive line of cars to the point that we were all pulled up in the street, blocking traffic. A helpful passerby helped to direct traffic to clear the obstruction from the road, as no one from either rental agency was addressing it. Eventually and gentleman came out and told me to simply leave the car and they would deal with it. I did so, but there was no formal hand off or drop-off process.

Cons: The car smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. I was in a hurry, and the attendant walked away after giving me the keys, so I didn't have time to find someone to see if I could exchange the car. However, the smell was so strong we had to drive with the windows down the entire 4 hour trip.

Pros: The car was clean and fine, the process of booking was relatively smooth.Cons: At pick-up, the woman behind the Avis counter told me she had 4 mini vans left in her fleet so i had no choice but to go with a mini van, even though I had specifically reserved a small car. After the agents brought my car from the garage, i noticed that the couple behind me got a large SUV. How was it possible they chose an SUV if all was left were minivans?? When the woman walked by as I was adjusting my seat, I asked her why this happened. She sort of stammered and said there were 3 mini vans left, and one large SUV. When I reminded her that she told me there were only 4 minivans left and that i specifically had no other choice, she stammered again that someone had specifically reserved a large SUV. This made no sense though, since I also reserved a car other than a minivan. I think I was justified in being irritated by this -- she had in essence lied to me about what was available. Another issue I encountered -- when signing up for the car, the woman told me that the vehicle had Bluetooth capabilities. When I got the car, there clearly was no bluetooth capability, and if there was, i wasn't able to locate it on the console even with her help. These issues combined really soured the start to my trip. I think it was wrong and discriminatory of the woman to decide that the couple behind me should somehow get an SUV after she misrepresented the facts to me so explicitly just a minute before. I appreciate if Kayak could pass this along to Avis.

The display was broken (kept restarting), including the backup camera, which is a safety issue. And then the battery died. They couldn't get a towing truck there for 4 hours. And refused to book me a Lyft to the airport. I had to pay out of pocket, and we'll see if they refund me that price, or if I have to do it through my credit card company. Pros: Eventually I got a car. It ran fine.Cons: Counter staff tried to up-sell me on everything. Initially, he told me that there were no cars like what I reserved. (I reserved a compact) tried to get me to take a pickup truck or sports car for significantly more money. told me that the extra insurance I purchased wasn't worth anything and that I should buy their extra insurance on top of that. He finally "found" a car (larger than the one I wanted) and told me the wrong floor of the garage to go and get it. This all added 20-30 minutes to the pickup process. Inspecting the car was difficult because the garage was too dark to see anything. After leaving, I noticed a dent on the roof, dirty seats, and a slight smell like someone had been smoking in the car but then it was covered up with an air freshener. Also, their tolls policy is written strangely, possibly to convince you to opt into their overpriced unlimited tolls service.

Pros: The car itself was fine, I had no problems with it.Cons: I had been isolating for two weeks before traveling to see my father, who's over 65 and has asthma. I had called to learn about the rental process in advance, and was told I'd only have to come inside the office to sign the paperwork, so I thought that was safe. My rental was at 7am, so I'd be one of the first people in the office in the morning. However, when I arrived, there was someone else in the office (I'm not sure if it was someone who had just returned a car, or maybe a manager or someone working in the hotel) having a long and very loud chat with the rental agent, both unmasked, for at least 10 minutes. The rental office is very small and didn't look like it had any air circulation, so I decided that I would hold the door open when I went in, because being in a small, enclosed space where someone else had been laughing and talking loudly, unmasked, for the previous 10-15 minutes, did not feel very safe to me. However, the rental agent asked me not to hold the door open; after I explained my concern, he said I could wait outside the office while he took care of the paperwork, which I was grateful for. However, when he called me inside again to give back my driver's license, he started telling me about how I shouldn't be worried about covid, and kept telling me that for the next 5 minutes as he finished processing the rental. I ended up being inside that office with the door closed for about 5 minutes - not a lot of time, but it didn't feel safe to me given the long and loud unmasked conversation I had just witnessed, and how the agent kept telling me not to be worried about covid. I now have to wait to get tested and potentially isolate from my family, because we aren't comfortable with the risk of exposure from that interaction. I understand not being worried about covid oneself, but I'm frustrated by that rental agent's lack of regard for my boundaries and concerns.

I understand that when demand is high cars are hard to come by, but is it not possible to alert/text people with reservations to this so they don't show up on time and then have to stand in the cold for indefinite periods of time? Given the pandemic, many nearby businesses are closed and it may be uncomfortable/dangerous to wait inside a nearby coffeeshop or store. I also found drop off extremely confusing - the Budget entrance at BWI was closed, and the sign directing cars to AVIS on a piece of computer paper was only visible/ readable if you got out of the car and walked up to it.

The issue is not with the employees being slow, it is the many hoops they have to jump through to take care of one customer. So much data entering, paper to print and staple, etc etc. We got at the branch at 705am and were sitting in our car at 745am. Maybe have the customer pre-enter most of the data themselves in advance?
Pros: This was my third time renting from this location, and I always have an excellent experience - the staff is nice, there's never a wait, and the cars are clean and in great condition.

Cons: No one was there at all. I waited for almost two hours. No one was there to help. I called Thrifty on the phone, no answer. I called Thrifty's 1-800 number and they were of no help saying they couldn't do anything because they had no direct contact to the local offices. I eventually rented a car at a completely different car rental agency (which I had to take a taxi to so it cost me extra). Absolutely terrible experience and Thrifty was no help at all. There was another guy there that was trying to do the same and he was bewildered and also spend lots of time on the phone trying to figure out why on earth they had no one there to help or get us our cars.
