In Europe, cars are little. What seems small to us (Australians) is a big car to them. Always get something larger to accommodate luggage.

Roads around the island can be a bit rough - go for a slightly bigger car for more comfort!

The roads were better than expected. We did not go to remote places but I had read that a more capable vehicle would be beneficial. I guess it depends on what your plans are. We did cities and beaches and did not need all wheel drive.

Pre pay your car directly from the car rentals, to minimize the oppurtunities to rip you off with extra charges. Try not to get scammed by the on sight staff that will try everything to get som extra money out of you, including giving your car to somelse, making you pay extra for a new car, ripping you off with a 20% "on-site fee" ++. And the insurince you get through the booking broker does not mean anything. You still need an additional insurence if you dont want to risk not getting your money back from the broker in case anything happends.

If you're considering renting a car, do it. The island is spread out and public transit is...sparse. You'll be happy you have a car, and getting around by car is super easy.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Olbia
Reach the city center of Olbia conveniently with a rental car and do not worry about public transport schedules and delays – especially as transit delays are quite common in Italy. A rental car will provide travelers with the ultimate flexibility. With the right vehicle, travelers can explore Olbia, the nearby scenic beaches of the Costa Smeralda, and the abundance of archeological sites on Sardinia.
When arriving at Olbia Airport, about 2.4 miles from Olbia center, travelers can directly rent a car there to start their journey immediately. Located near the arrivals hall, the rental car companies include Avis, Hertz, and Sixt, all of which offer vehicles for every taste and preference. More information on all the car rental services can also be received at the information desk in the airport arrivals hall. Renting a car in advance is much cheaper and advised for trips during the summer holidays, when car rentals are usually highly booked.
Driving on Sardinia is generally a hassle-free and enjoyable experience, but bigger cities like Olbia can clog up, specifically during the summer holidays. When driving through the countryside, also watch out for flocks of sheep that may suddenly cross the street. Also, check the ZTL for Olbia and make sure not to enter it without a valid pass. ZTL signifies a zona traffico limitato, which is an area where entering with a car is only allowed during certain times of the day and may require a pass. Ask for information at the car rental service or at your hotel.
Exploring the scenic landscape of Sardinia is one of the best experiences when going to Olbia, but be aware that road conditions can be challenging and sometimes roads simply turn into dirt tracks riddled with potholes and bumps. Make sure to get proper insurance to cover all sorts of damages and drive slowly and attentively when going off the grid.
Olbia, Greek for "happiness," is a well-known coastal city in Sardinia, Italy. Although its coastal regions are the main attractions in Sardinia, you won't regret adding Olbia to your travel bucket list because there are endless beaches, islands, and historical sites to explore. Olbia is a popular jump-off point for travelers taking road trips to uncover UNESCO World Heritage and archaeological sites such as the Su Nuraxi di Barumini, located 2h 41min from Olbia. While walking the historic sea walls of Alghero situated on the northwest coast of Sardinia is encouraged, a 30-minute drive from Olbia for an exclusive tour of complex Bronze Age Nuraghe structures located in the territory of Sardinia, Alghero, and Cagliari makes for a great photo session. Also famous is the 15km tour of the city of Olbia to see Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Regina Margherita, the Basilica of San Simplicio, the Corso Umberto, and much more.
While navigating cheap car rentals in Olbia's mountainous regions, countryside, and coastal roads makes for an enjoyable driving experience, Sardinia is filled with numerous bending and steep passages, including tunnels and viaducts routes that locals use when going on afternoon walks. Therefore, be mindful of what's ahead when negotiating the many hairpin curves and long narrow winding roads. Be ready to use your horn to alert people walking in the opposite direction.
Driving in Sardinia can be challenging even for well-traveled individuals, as roads are windy, poorly signed, and less than well-maintained. When hiring Olbia car rentals through KAYAK, confirm that local car companies have navigation devices in their vehicles to help you find your way around the countryside routes of Sardinia.

I was delighted with my experiencing renting from Sicily by Car in Olbia. The desk agent was exceptionally friendly and helpful - even giving me local tips! - and gave me a vehicle upgrade to a nearly new car. I loved driving around the island in the vehicle and found it a good value for the price. The only thing that could have been improved was the ability to return the car an hour later - I had to spend my last day sitting in the airport because of the strict rules around a later dropoff. I would have been happy to pay 10-20 euros for an extra hour or two, just so I could enjoy my last day in Olbia.

Friendly staff and great car. Couldn't be any happier with Sicily by Car!
The interior of the car was clean but the exterior was still extremely dirty. The windows were dusty. Other wise it was a good experience renting a car from Avis. The staff was extremely helpful when returning the car.
Hire car company that advertises cars they don’t have, then try and squeeze you into a vehicle that’s much smaller. We are travelling for 4 months so used Noleggiarre’s luggage guide of two large bags to chose a car with ‘grande’ boot space and paid $1500 for a week. Of course, they didn’t have anything like the car we’d booked but gave us a ToyotaYaris Cross Trek and there was no way we could fit ourselves and our luggage in. It took 4 hours but in the end, we got a Renault Espace (which wasn’t available online at the time we made the original booking). We basically waited until the bigger car was returned by someone else. Be really careful when booking regarding boot capacity / luggage allowance and if what they give you can’t do the job they advertise, push back. Make sure you get detailed photos and videos of ANY damage that the car has, before you take it, including low down under bumpers and marks on alloys.

Was unable to pick up car, as they require an International Drivers license, unlike most of the other rental agencies there. This was not clearly communicated in the reservation process, or in the booking confirmation. Moreover, Expedia offered no assistance and has no clear way of contacting them to rebook within six hours of the pickup time.
