KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Fredericksburg
Renting a car in Fredericksburg, VA, is an excellent means of getting around the city. Besides alleviating maintenance and car insurance costs, you also enjoy the freedom of getting to whichever destination you want, such as Pioneer Museum or Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, at whatever time you find convenient. Furthermore, you also get to choose the brand and model of the car you prefer, whether you are traveling for business or pleasure.
Visitors can enter Fredericksburg via Washington Reagan National Airport, located about 50 miles north of the city, Baltimore/Washington International Airport (98 miles north), and Washington Dulles (45 miles north). There are car rentals in Fredericksburg offices in all these airports at on-airport rental car counters located in the parking garage A, including Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Avis, Alamo, Hertz, Budget, and Payless.
Driving around Fredericksburg can be challenging, considering the city is a commuter-heavy destination. That means you'll have to deal with larger vehicles, such as buses, trailers, and transport vans, as well as pedestrians in the city center and as you pass through residential areas. Be sure to be alert, patient, and observant of traffic rules.
You'll experience different weather and road conditions throughout the year. During winter, there are high chances of skidding due to snow and ice. We advise you to break earlier and pressing the pedal gently. Heavy thunderstorms and rainfall during summer can reduce road visibility. Therefore, drive slower and be alert. There are usually many cars on the roads during winter. It would be best to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Consider it a buffer zone for reacting to a potential road hazard.
Popular Fredericksburg car rentals like Hertz and Avis are located near Fredericksburg Amtrak Station. The station is located 0.6 miles (1km) away from the city center if you drive your rental vehicle via Caroline St and about 0.7 (1.1km) miles if you drive via Sophia St or Prince Edward St. However, it takes approximately 3 minutes despite the route you follow to the city center. The convenience of booking car rentals near the train station is the ease of picking up and returning them when the rental period is over. Again, you can choose cheap car rentals in Fredericksburg near the train station entrance.
Safe driving is a priority by Fredericksburg lawmakers. Thus, driving under the influence (DUI) is a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by law. You risk a 12-month jail term and a $2,500 fine. Again, you’re required to attend the Virginia Alcohol Safety Actions Program (VASAP) for alcohol treatment. In addition, your driver’s license may be suspended for one year. However, you risk more consequences if you violate this offense for a second time. When driving on Fredericksburg streets, you'll see police officers with breathalyzers during vehicle operations. Thus, avoid violating the rules by maintaining an alcohol level below 0.8%.
Driving to various destinations near Fredericksburg can be fun after renting a car. You can book cheap car rentals in Fredericksburg to save more on fuel to get to multiple attraction sites. Further, you enjoy the freedom and flexibility of driving rental cars, instead of public transport. Iconic sites to drive to, 82 miles (132km) northeast of Fredericksburg, are The Walters Art Museum or Max’s Taphouse in about 2h. Old Town Alexandria is about 41 miles (66km) northeast of the city and about a 1h 5min drive. This was my first time renting a vehicle. My overall experience was very good. The staff at Avis was friendly and was able to answer my questions. The vehicle was exactly what I was looking for and made the event we had planned a success, and everyone had a great time.

You let me book there when they didn't have any cars available, and since I bought the extra insurance through your website, I lost $55 for insurance I couldn't use since I didn't get any car. No one was available from your site and your help line told me that you weren't responsible for anything, including the insurance you sold me. You suck and made a horrible situation (broken down on the side of the road right before rental agencies closed) even worse. Will never use Kayak for this ever again.
The poor girl working was the only one and it made the process take longer and she was clearly stressed. Send her some help to the the Fredericksburg Va office

Friendly, easy, cheapest and the best (and only) selection of cars available in the area.

Cons:
The system took my online reservation but they didn’t have any cars available ☹️
Their words “we’re giving it to you almost empty, so make sure you return it almost empty.” We did not enjoy having to immediately gas up upon receiving the car. But besides that they were easy to work with and the car was mostly clean.

Pros:
One of the staff was friendly. The lady the originally took care of me, she seems like she didn’t want to be there. She gave a a dirty and smelly car. Also the car she gave me was dangerous because it was raining really hard and the windshield wipers, you can tell, they needed to be cleaned. Moving forward I got a new replacement

Pros:
Friendly staff. Quick pick up and drop off process. Best value.
Arrived at rental location to be notified that, after booking a car online, there were no cars available for rent so I asked if they could cancel my reservation and the lady who was pretty nice, had said that the system wouldn’t allow her to cancel since it was 6 minutes after pick up time however I was there before pick up. I was just waiting in line. Anyway, I ended up getting charged for 1 day of having the car even though they weren’t able to provide me a car!!!

They never called me. I get to the location. They don’t have my vehicle. They forgot to inform me. I missed my flight so I had to drive down. Which I was trying to avoid. I was late to my sons birthday. You guys need to compensate me. I am livid. This is ridiculous. The ball was dropped so hard. They even told me they would call me back with a rental and they never did. Worst experience. Never recommending

Pros:
Nothing
Cons:
No car available once I got there, waste of an uber then I had to run down the street to try and make it to Enterprise before they closed. Staff seemed helpful to begin with, then just left me sitting there waiting time when they didn't have any cars. Never renting from that location again.

Pros:
Easy to book
Cons:
Almost everything. I didn't have a mask and the guy behind the counter told me to go away. I was just dropped off by a uber and the nearest place selling masks was a 1 mile walk. He never offered to let me do the transaction outside. After I got in the car two minutes down the road a warning light came on indicating the car had been in an accident. I had to call HERTZ and photo the warning light so as to not be blamed for something I didn't do. When I got to the airport drop off no one was around and no sign for the key drop. I had to guess what to do and had no confirmation of an inspection of the car, just walked out assuming I did what I was supposed to do.
