The atmosphere was fun. It was western and had been updated well. The room was cute if a little on the small side, but to be expected with an older hotel that's been updated. The room and the bathroom were both meticulously clean and cute. The bed was pretty hard, but given that is my biggest complaint I would for sure use it again.
The Eklund hotel was built in 1892 and restored in 2004. All of the century-old charm remains - including bullet holes in the saloon ceiling from its Wild West days. The staff is amazing - friendly, helpful, and filled with enchanting stories of the hotel's early years. The restaurant/saloon had delicious food and fun ambience. The breakfast is limited; however, it is lovingly homemade and delicious. 15 minutes from Clayton Lake State Park, a gorgeous 1/4 mile hike to see dinosaur footprints. 40 minutes to Capulin Volcano I hate mentioning any negatives since we had such a lovely stay in such a unique hotel. - the rooms are quaint and do not include the typical hotel extras (coffee maker, refrigerator) - we did not mind the sound, but rooms overlooking the train rails will hear intermittent whistles throughout the night
We stayed in room 125. After trying for 45 minutes to use the WiFi, we gave up. At first the WiFi did not show up. When it did finally show up, it was terribly slow. When we did finally get on the WiFi and try to use it, we were kicked off due to poor reception. We tried on two phones and an iPad. We noticed some masked odor, like it was once a smoking room and now wasn't.
The room we stayed in (118) smelled like smoke but was supposed to be non smoking?
What we needed for the right price
Supposedly the best rate in town No wireless connection even after asking the clerk 3 times. Direct TV didn't work. Breakfast was late getting set up.
the staff was very friendly We asked for a non-smoking. The sign on the door said it was non-smoking. However, the room reeked of smoke, so bad that our clothes smelled like smoke.
Old and inexpensive. Very clean and fully functional. Direct TV, soft bed, hot shower and clean towels. Room coffee was good enough to get me out the door.
The sheets appeared clean. There were no locks on any of our windows, no phone to call the office in case of an emergency, and an ajoining room we were not informed about. The carpet was stained and most of the tv channels did not work.
As others have said, it is an old motor court with only about 6-8 rooms ( numbered 120-128?!!!!) . There are only 3 other lodgings available in town(about 80-100 miles to next town). We were there for hunting and there were NO rooms available in the town. Someone came out of our room while we checked in, turned out later that person had taken a dump, thankfully flushed, but left the smell. Since there were no other rooms available, here or in town, we had to accept the managers offer to change the lock.
The location There are no phones in the room and the wifi never worked
