Flights to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users' own experiences

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew to the United States

Make sure you know the baggage rules, don’t bring more than you need, and if you get a rental car, know that people target them for break-ins. Never leave anything in your car. Going in for a snack? Take your bags. Basically, drive to your hotel, take the bags out immediately and put them in your room, and try to leave nothing in the car ever. It’s not always this bad, but they spot rentals from a mile away. Be smart, be safe.
MichaelFlew with SouthwestLAS-SJCSep 2024
I alway check luggage on Southwest. That way I don’t have to worry about dragging it through the airport. In and off the plane and just bring my personal item on board. It is going to be interesting how Southwest institutes assigned seating.
DavianFlew with SouthwestLAX-OAKSep 2024
Don't rent a car or Uber. Add Clipper Card to your digital phone wallet and use it to take the Bart! It was super easy and very clean with spectacular views along the way
DONALDFlew with SouthwestATL-MCISep 2024
None for this leg. But it seems the earlier the better for seating. The flight is usually not filled to capacity, so you can usually get an aisle or window seat fairly easy.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit AirlinesORD-LASSep 2024
Make sure you get your seats booked at time of booking or at the least when you check in and make sure you check in at the earliest to have preferred seating.

Arrive early, grab a bottle of soda before getting on the plane and open it in the terminal. If you wait until flying the pressure will decarbonize the drink.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesEWR-SEASep 2024
Buy something in the airport to eat before boarding as its a long flight and the snacks are not enough unless you plan to sleep the whole ride.
TamaraFlew with Spirit AirlinesEWR-FLLSep 2024
Choose airlines close to your home. Especially for uber purposes. Every airline that allows a carryon is ggreat. Complimentary snacks are a plus and add competent courteous staff.

They have a usb charger in the seat, so bring one of those if you plan on using an electronic device the entire flight.

Have plenty of patience for the casual travelers! They are oblivious of rules and etiquettes that slows down the process for everyone. Case in point, a guy held up the line trying to place both his personal item (should be UNDER the seat in front of you) and his carry on case horizontally. Obviously not aware of the big poster right in front of his displaying the proper way of placing his case on it's side. Slowed the whole line of people behind him. Also be mindful the agents in Ontario airport (or any smaller airports) might not be the most knowledgeable on the rules and regulations of air travel, luggage specification allowances etc. Stay patient!! Also the seats do not recline that well anymore on AA flights. So if you have back problems, be sure to bring some back supports.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesLAX-PDXSep 2024
The "pay to pick your seat" policy stinks. It's even worse than "pay to pick a seat you'd want to sit in" that airlines have been doing for a while. There is no cohesive policy for how one *gets* a seat assignment- at LAX my boarding pass had a seat assignment; in Portland, the ticketing agent told me the gate agent "had" to do it, but the gate agent said it had been assigned the whole time even though my boarding pass had a blank space where the seat assignment should have been.

Delta was great even in the face of the great IT outage of July 19th 2024. I only had one minor delay in my five-flight (total, with two flights on 7/15) trip. The gate agents and crew were friendly and helpful and indomitable in the face of a difficult situation. The planes were clean. The snacks were good, and they offered complimentary earbuds for watching content on the seat-back screens. The selection of movies, TV, and games was good. My slightly large carry-on roller bag fit fine on all flights but my last when it was checked at the gate for free (small commuter jet with small overhead compartments). 10/10 will fly again!
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit AirlinesLAS-MKEJul 2024
My tip is to completely choose a different airline like Southwest where everything is included and you know what you’re getting and you’re treated well and very comfortable. Spirit has no entertainment no free snacks or drinks, no included luggage no included carry-ons no space, basically no service. It’s meant for single people with an hour flight
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SLCJul 2024
Alaska, Southwest and Delta are my go-to's. Stay away from independent airlines that can cancel flights without much warning. Also, order tickets at least 2 months out for whichever airline you choose, and avoid third party agents, because they lack the protection you need if flights run into problems.
Verified travelerFlew with LufthansaPHX-IAHAug 2024
We landed on a domestic flight in C terminal, and had an international departure from Terminal E. FYI, the food and drink selection is better in C, so if you have the time don’t rush to your departure gate.

Baggage fees for Alaska are fare - if you paid with their card it is free, and if not it is 35.00. I was happy with all other aspects of the flght both to DC and back.
HeatherFlew with LufthansaORD-MKEAug 2024
Make sure there's enough time between connections to go through customs and recheck your luggage. They will not let you proceed so you can't even try to run and catch the flight if you want to.

Verified travelerFlew with United AirlinesRIC-IADJul 2024
Know where your connecting gate. You can use the airline app to bring up a map and it can give you directions and time from landing gate to departure gate.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesBOI-BURJul 2024

Avoid Charlotte. The mountain weather is so unpredictable, plus the poor recent airline scheduling services, you will be stranded in the mountain with small airport, with limited alternative transportation methods. The airlines had been delaying the flights and stringing you for a few hours, then cancelling your flights and simply letting you re-schedule your own next legs with the existing flights, which may or may not take off. Airlines have not been courteous enough to schedule more flights to accommodate the canceled ones. If you cannot avoid Charlotte, be prepared to be stranded for extra 1-2 days before you can get out to your final destination.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSFO-SEAJul 2024
It is a very crowded flight, so I advice to choose seats in advance. FAQs - booking United States flights

  • Which airport is closest to Yellowstone National Park?

Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in the United States. The huge park encompasses a portion of the states of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and most major American airlines offer air service to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) in Montana.

  • Which airlines are some of the best to travel around the US?

American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Continental are some of the best airlines to choose from if you wish to travel across the US. These four airlines provide service to most of the major hubs across the country, including Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, San Francisco Airport and Newark Liberty Airport. Frequent flyers can take advantage of programs like AA Advantage and SkyMiles, which offer premium services and rewards.

  • Can I get a nonstop flight from Los Angeles to New York?

Yes, you can. Several carriers including United Airlines, Delta, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines offer nonstop service from Los Angeles to two New York metropolitan airports: JFK Airport in New York City and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey.

  • Are there any domestic airlines that do not have baggage fees?

Southwest Airlines allows each passenger to check two bags for free on flights within the US, provided each bag is less than 50 pounds and neither of them is oversized. All other major air carriers will charge you for each checked bag - usually $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second.

  • When I'm flying to any city in California and planning on renting a car, are there specific child seat laws I should know about?

Under California state law, children need to travel in the rear seat of a vehicle until they are eight years old, and they must travel in an appropriate car seat or booster seat for their height and weight. More specifically, children under the age of two need to travel in a rear-facing car seat, and above that age, they must travel in a forward-facing car seat until they outgrow that seat. After that, children must travel in a booster seat.

  • If I would like to fly to Florida for spring break, what are some good airport choices?

Travelers that want to visit the east coast of Florida for spring break should make their way to the Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL), and from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), passengers can find nonstop flights aboard United Airlines. If visiting the west coast of Florida, a good airport choice is Tampa International Airport (TPA), and from Denver International Airport (DEN), there are nonstop flight options and board United Airlines as well.

  • When will I need a REAL ID to travel in the United States?

Lower number on this flight so spaced out passengers. Able to enjoy more room to relax during flight. It was lovely.

Kind staff. Snacks are small but that’s the new normal.

The young man who was our flight attendant in first class was lazy and did not do his job well at all. Never offered drinks upon boarding - actually I take that back... said "are you okay with water" as if I do not want to get you anything else, only passed the snacks around once, got my drink order wrong and then never offered a second round of drinks. He was the worst I have ever seen on Delta and we fly a lot.

Great service. Great staff. Boarding was a little slow, but I think there was a service dog slowing things down.

Flight left early and arrived early. the whole trip was excellent.

Seats were really tight and the seat belts did not give enough slack.

I like in St George and prefer to fly out of CDC than SGU. Hopefully, they will continue the flights out of Cedar

Broken jer bridge. Poor communication about it. Lost 2 of 4 luggage pieces

Overall, it was okay. Seat was a little cramped. Would’ve liked more substantial snacks or opportunity to buy some.

Newer plane, relatively easy boarding, not a full flight and was told that we could not be moved up because of weight and balance issues. Otherwise, a very good experience.

Plenty of room for me and the cat in Premium Economy. Seat was comfortable. Boarding was a breeze. The lady at the special check-in desk was great, super helpful and professional.

For the most part united was a good experience, how ever when they came by with the snacks and water, they completely passed by my wife and I. As we were in separate rows. On a 5 hr flight we were not offered water

Fantastic crew. Flight was delayed at last minute but we were given updates every 20 minutes and the crew was so friendly and considerate. I miss the touch screens on the back of the seats, wish they would bring that back though.

Our seats were all the way in back of the plane,

Food choices were very limited. Taste of the dishes was average.

Maybe add a seat trade app for flyers that didn’t get seats together

It’s been awhile since I have traveled on United. I, along with my family who were on the flight noted how smoothly everything went . Boarding, flight crew and service was excellent.

The seats on this flight were almost roomy enough to be the basic amount needed for human existence. I think my favorite part of this flight was it landed at an A gate, which was the most palatial part of Sea-Tac I've ever seen - a massive improvement from the S gates.

The seats on this flight were almost roomy enough to be the basic amount needed for human existence.

There's just no way to sit fully upright and comfortably in these seats. There needs to be 2 more inches of room, and that's not something that only one person on the flight needs - the whole flight needs 2 more inches of room. If that means you sell 6 less seats, so be it. It's too close for anyone. Forcing people to pay for "premium" economy just to get "barely enough space to breathe" isn't really an answer to that.

Almost everything was outstanding. First, we boarded on time and the flight crew did a great job getting everyone seated. Then the pilots took their time and care to make sure the plane was full de-iced three times as there was a bad ice storm a few hours earlier. The plane ride was smooth and comfortable and even the economy seats had decent room and comfort. Flight Attendant Lisa went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable - she is outstanding. The only thing wrong with the flight, and it is something which needs to be addressed, is that the gate to gate time was over 6.5 hours and not one meal was served. The only thing offered to eat were two small cookies for a transcontinental flight - unacceptable. Charge me more but give me a meal for a long flight. Thankfully Lisa found something for me.

The only thing is if Wi-Fi is available after you land and taxi to the gate. It takes forever to get to the gate, and having the Wi-Fi continue would be great to bide the time at least 5 minutes before you arrive at the entrance. That is my only comment; otherwise, everything was good.

I got bumped due to weight restrictions even tho there were empty seats on my flight. I got put on an other flight with a stopover. My flight that originally was going to take 5-6 hours ever up being 14+ hours and my luggage arrived to my destination without me because I was made to check in my luggage on my original flight when I was deemed ok to board only to be asked to deplane. Worst flight experience.

Amazingly comfy flight - I had upgraded for a reasonable price and it was worth it. The food also was good.

Checking in at the counter was very disappointing. The lady had a very bad attitude and smart at me. She had no smile, did not greet me by name, or acknowledge me as a valued customer. Poor reflection of the airline.

Had to wait on pilot and crew to depart and had to wait to arrive at the gate because they only had 2 crews working. Delays, delays....Planes just keep getting smaller and tighter and they nickle and dime for everything. When will an airline actually wake up and make flying more enjoyable?

Angela was the best fa ever. She made that 8 hour flight a breeze

Kayak boarding information contained inaccuracies that would have not existed if booked directly with American. Paid for preferential boarding, was last to board.

I had two wonderful flights - very relaxing and got me there early!

What, first class and not even a cup of coffee before landing at 5 am in First Class? Really?

More groups for smother boarding, I didnt have any food. and there was no entertainment

Overall experience felt smooth and well-run. Inexpensive direct flight was great. Extreme "a-la-carte" business model got tiresome after a while. The $8 soft drink in-flight just felt excessive. Thin, hard, tightly-spaced seats were uncomfortable.

Spirit canceled the flight, sent no notification and then refused to issue a refund. Trash airline, will never fly again.

With this price, I shouldn't complain on anything. I understand I have to pay for every services they provide. The plane could smell a little better. Advise them to use frebeeze to freshen up the interior a little bit.

Not bad but I was told that I got a 1 carry. When I got to the gate I was told my purse was considered my carry on. I had never been told that before.

The flights were on time, the schedule was convenient for me, without delays.

Bare bones but a complimentary class of water doesn't seem like too much to ask.

You get what you pay for with this airline. If you want comfort be ready to pay, the regular seats are like hard plastic bus seats and they don't recline, so again you get what you pay for, a cheap flight that is just alright. Which is what I wanted.

Stop nickel and diming passengers with different seat costs, paying for water, carry on luggage, etc.

Boarding was smooth and on time. Flight itself was smooth (aside from some turbulence) and no glitches. On the downside, Spirit's no-frills service was as expected (no food or drink, cramped seating, extra cost for carry-ons, etc.), the announcements were nearly incomprehensible, and the constant niggling offers of upgrades and other services for sale (wifi, sandwiches, etc.) is annoying. Overall, a pleasant and uneventful experience - definitely worth the price.

Check in at Philadelphia international was absolutely terrible! I fly 2 to 3 times a month and avoid frontier at all cost and will never fly Frontier again! The night before travel, I tried checking in however, the app was giving me an error, so I went to the desktop, which instructed you that you need to use the app. The next day I presented at the check-in gate after trying at least a half dozen times prior to getting into the airport and continuing to getting the error in the app. I actually had rebooted my phone numerous times and reinstall the app just in case. My phone is only one generation older than the current model. It has no problems completing a frontier flight purchase or any other app issues. There was only three frontier employees working at check-in and a huge line while I was in line I continued to try and check in via the app. As I approach the desk, I was dreading dealing with the agent. He was extremely unprofessional, anti-semantic & very ignorant, and mean to the people in front of me, as well as the people who ended up being behind me. He literally told people “Man I don’t care bout y’all” in his native dialect! Maintaining my composure I approached and explained the situation. To which he replied, you’re gonna have to pay then! I don’t understand. It’s an issue with their app not allowing me to check in! Not my issue! He told me if I pay cash it would be $15, $25 if I pay credit card. I don’t understand a $10 difference for paying with a credit card? I am completely cashless so I continued to try using the app to avoid the $25 fee, Which I still don’t believe that I should be responsible for since it was Frontier’s technical issue!!! I continued to check in via the app a couple more times after he verified I was doing everything right he proceeded to continue to belittle the people behind me. Yelling at them saying I don’t care about you people! I cannot believe that this is the way that businesses would treat its customers! Unfortunately, the black mail with dreadlocks did not have a name tag all he had was a frontier sweater on! For the $25 fee that I ended up getting charged on my credit card. I should’ve just booked originally with Spirit or any other carrier! I have no problem paying fees that I should be responsible for, but when it’s due to a technical failure of a company, the customer should not be responsible for it! I cannot believe that it’s not frontier going out of business!

they delayed my flight which ended up, causing my layover flight to leave without me, resulting in me missing a flight and having to stay overnight in Houston international. I got no compensation other than a flight to my original location only a day later. i’ve never experienced such a unprofessional situation

Very easy with the app to board and staff skills

After waiting several minutes to be acknowledged by 3 employees on their phones, was told we had missed our flight because the doors were closed at that literal moment. Had they given any actual service or help while we were standing there we would have been on with time to spare. More than 10 people were turned away in this fashion claiming there was no way they could let us on the plane, even though it was still sitting connected to the terminal. After the desk agents let us know they didn't care about the situation we were forced to pay more than twice the price of our original tickets as no credits were given for the price of the "missed" flight. And the icing on the cake was after being treated poorly, fleeced for another few hundred dollars for new tickets? We waited on the next plane for 25 minutes passed the "doors closed" time, letting almost an extra dozen passengers on board. You're company has lazy, disinterested employees and your lack of any real help will ensure this was the first and last time we fly Frontier. Awful.

My experience with the phoenix airport was terrible, the personnel lay the ticket counter charged me for a carry on that fit in the carry on size box, and the two women I spoke with were terribly rude and not willing to help.,,, there was one lady “candy” on the flight crew that was amazing and is the only reason I stayed on the flight at all, because the other stewards helping people to get seated on the plane were terrible

I loked walking out on the tarmac to board and no first class. I didn't like that they have no snacks or onboard wifi to bide your time.

The plane was clean, the crew was friendly and helpful. It’s a low cost airline so there was no food, drinks or in flight entertainment but we didn’t expect any of these things. In the room for improvement department, they should install USB ports in seats to charge mobile devices.

The seats were extremely hard and uncomfortable, even for a budget airline.

The seats were extremely hard and uncomfortable. It was disappointing even for a budget airline.

Charging $74 for one checked bag is outrageous. I will never fly Frontier again.
