9.3 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely stunning property in an idyllic setting. The most wonderful staff. Delicious food. Lots of activities in close proximity and a beautiful pool to relax in. Most memorable part of our trip,I hope one day to return!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous old colonial mansion in the jungle. Perfect spot to relax and drink a few g & ts by the pool and be looked after by the kind and dedicated staff.
6.3 Good
Pros: Great staff, fabulous dinners (breakfasts only OK, though), lovely, beautifully maintained and sensuous gardens, magical hillside location.
Cons: We were given a room which was much lower standard than shown in the photographs - frosted glass windows (gloomy, no view), IKEA fixtures, inferior plastic shower tap, cramped bed area (40 cm on each side), sofa upholstered in cheap thin white fabric, artificial potted plant... The original bedrooms - on the first floor - are great, worth their price, but ours (the Villa) and the other new one, built on to the side of the main building, are probably worth not much more than half of that, and yet we were charged the same.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful garden, relaxing pool area, michelin star food, very welcoming hosts.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is FANTASTIC, location is amazing - up in the mountains and very peaceful. People working there is so nice. Our kids loved the garden and pool. Worth a certificate of exellence. We will return.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: What a paradise! In the midst of the lush djungle and tea Plantages! The house had a great athmosphere and historic vibe. The staff was very warm and welcoming and prepared for us the most delicious dinner we had in Sri Lanka in the past two weeks. We got a little village & estate tour which was educative and very interesting ... we wished we could have stayed longer!!
Cons: Hard to find if you don’t prepare for directions (our own fault though (-:)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: What an absolute gem. This place is magical. My husband and I were keen to find somewhere less touristy and peaceful but also have a treat... and oh what a treat it was. A beautiful house, garden and pool with the most amazing animals and birds. Giant squirrel and baby, complimentary garden and estate tour, cake and tea on the terrace on arrival, an amazing trek to find the leaf nosed horned lizard, 9 endemic species of birds, amazing cooking, Jazz playing over dinner, Sri Lankan breakfasts... honestly I could go on. 2 days that we will remember forever.
Cons: Nothing. It was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: good location for a quite stay. Did walk a couple of the roads that did a loop around the area. In the world of tea estates is only produces a tiny amount.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: our host Jko and the staff were so helpful and attentive, always there to help. The food was delicious. The rooms were large airy and very comfortable. The pool was a real bonus in the heat of the day. The setting was stunning and we loved our spice walk and early morning swim in the river.
Cons: I would like to have taken part in some yoga but it felt a little expensive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Starting from the staff and the service, to the charm of the colonial house and it’s amazing landscape... the best experience we had in Sri Lanka. The cuisine is delicious! The smiles on every face is the real rythm of the place.

Pros: Facility, Staff, Cleaness and location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was amazing! The manager made sure that we had the best experience we could ! He was so friendly and accommodated all our needs. The other staff also went out of their way to help us, including driving a tuk tuk and arranging our transport to the airport. We were also happy that we could get really good food, including traditional Sri Lankan curries. Apart from that, the peaceful location in the mountain was excellent and quite easy to reach despite the windy roads. Excellent overall experience and would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Cons: This hotel could not improve on anything.
7.5 Good
Cons: the pastha prepared for night mixed with tomato sours ,not very palatable, thre is no watcher at gate so if we want to go out we have to call manager and get the facility done, because gate always closed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is located in a beautiful place surrounded by trees and nature. The villa itself is very nice and the driveway up to it is like out of a story book. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable; and the beds are comfy! This place looks even better than in the photos! It's really nice! The staff were also wonderful and exceeded our expectations helping us organise hikes in the Knuckles Forest Reserve. Last, but not least the breakfast was great! I recommend asking for Sri Lankan breakfast, such as milk rice (made with coconut milk), string hoppers, curry and dhal! :)
Cons: The wifi was a bit weak.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: staff
Cons: Condition of the hotel building
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazingly peaceful, great views, good food and very friendly and helpful staff. This is one very well run place, we couldn’t have asked for more after a long day of cycling finished with the climb up to the hotel.
Cons: If you’re cycling, it’s a big climb to get to the hotel. I’m sure it’s no trouble in a tuk-tuk, car or bus.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I loved he quiet location and the beautiful gardens. The staff were so attentive and interesting. More like friends. The rooms were large and well furnished. The food served was of the highest quality.
Cons: The swimming pool wa quite small and really not designed for swimming lengths ! s disappointing= really a "Dipping" pool s. However it wa kept very clean
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is by far one of our favorite spots in sri lanka. Area: the area is beautiful and there a couple of nice hikes around the hotel. One Day the manager arranged a hike up the mountain. (which you can see from the hotel) Its about a 10 mins drive by tuk tuk to get to the start of the hike. It is a bush hike and we saw not one other tourist, which was awesome! You can really enjoy the beauty of the nature. On top of the mountain we made a fire and had lunch with the best view ever! (This was all arranged by the manager) After the hike on our way back we were stopping at the tea factory. Which was closed, but they opened the factory for us to show us how they make their tea. Very interesting to see! We thought the whole tour is probably heaps expensive and we are traveling on a budget. BUT it is not expensive at all. We payed way more for other hikes for example Horton’s plains.. We had that feeling that the manager and all the staff in the hotel love what they are doing. Food: The Food in the Hotel is amazing. The breakfast is all what you need to start your day with. Fruits, bread, curry, rice, tea or coffee, fresh juice..) Their menu for lunch and dinner is just perfect. One day we had sri Lankan curry (one of the best curries we had in sri lanka) and one other day we had chicken, salad and the best pumpkin soup! Room: Super nice big rooms, very clean and luxury. Staff: Super friendly and always smiling. If we are visiting sri lanka again we would definitely come back. We would highly recommend this place, especially if you love to go hiking. And if you want to relax, there is also a nice pool. Also in Matale are two really nice temples to visit.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful setting. A wonderful tranquil place to stay ideally situation to explore the surrounding area. The manager and his staff were outstanding and could not be more helpful. Food was plentiful and they offered an extensive menu. The curries in particular were delicious. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Sri Lanka.
Cons: There was nothing of any significance that we could comment on as a negative

Pros: Site seeing within the property are good. However the hotel staff and management are not worrying about the customer satisfaction at all, and the suit I booked was not ready, it needed a MAJOR maintenance during my stay which totally ruined my holday, I complained to the duty manager and he did NOTHING at all!!
Cons: hotel's staff and management are not worrying about the customer satisfaction at all, and the suit I booked was not ready, it needed a MAJOR maintenance during my stay which totally ruined my holday, I complained to the duty manager and he did NOTHING at all!! The suit was very old and not maintained at all, full of insects and flys.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We booked a double deluxe room on BB for one night stay. Loved the location and the spacious room! Staff was VERY POLITE and always on standby to serve you! The garden is well-kept, beautiful atmosphere.
Cons: Loved everything about the place!
4.3 Okay
Pros: Clean less room , but amazing garden
Cons: Room , reception staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: One of the best places in Sri Lanka.
7.5 Good
Cons: AC and hot water did not work properly
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We were in a Superior Double Room for two nights. The location and the surrounding view was breathtaking. Definitely one of the best located hotels in Sri Lanka. Usually you have to go to Nuwaraeliya or Haputale to get such views in Sri Lanka and suffer the cold climate. Plenty of ground in the hotel to walk and spend time. Perfect for couples.
Cons: The TV was bad. None of the channels were in HD quality. They seemed to have Peo TV (not sure) but still the picture quality was terrible. Do it right guys. People these days take HD quality TV for granted. Also the available channels were very limited. I’ve seen bigger and better lists of channels at cheaper hotels.
7.0 Good
Pros: Fantastic location and definitely an one in a million. Far away from towns and in the middle of a estate. Well maintained diverse garden with reservoir just out side the restaurant. Facilities available for recreational activities. Well maintained garden with different fauna and flora and a beautiful golf turf. Nice view from the room. Hunnas falls was very near and on the way to the hotel. Road to the hotel runs through a estate and safe. Some of the staff members (Reception) were exceptional. Special thanks for the Front office executive who followed up and helped me to sort out issue of my car by contacting a technician. I got priority there due the relationship with the hotel. Baby cot was placed as per our request. Helpful and friendly restaurant manager-she tried a lot to provide our baby's food on time, aligned with the requested requirements. Food was good even the choice was little.
Cons: Room's floor carpet was old and needs cleaning also. Only small single bar of soap, shampoo and towels were there as amenities. Had to contact several times to get needed amenities in needed quantities. The contact details given for house keeping is not working. After several attempts, had to contact reception every time. Bathroom was OK but surprisingly no tray at shower cubicle for soap and shampoo. Only one chair at balcony for our room. Bit unexpected experience in restaurant on one day. It was crowded at breakfast and had to wait a bit at different sections. But no specific mechanism such as providing a table No. etc. Due to the setup I requested an item from a restaurant staff member where she instructed me to go back to that specific place even before I finished my request. Except that restaurant environment was OK. Some of the facilities such as badminton court were poorly maintained. Road from Watthegama is narrow and therefore bit risky in the night and heavy rainfall. Avoid travelling in nights which I had to do twice.

8.8 Excellent (137 reviews)
Overview Reviews

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great room, warm shower water, very friendly staff, free use of kitchen and washing machine! The manager took us to Knuckles Range and Little Worlds End; beautifull nature up in the mountains! We had a perfect time.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Hospitality
Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner picked me up at the bus stop and also took me to the bus stop on my departure. This was extremely helpful. The staff was excellent.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Used the guesthouse for a day trip to beautiful knuckles range (on the recommendation of the owner, we visited Riverstone and the National Park - both beautiful. We rented a motorbike from him for the day (1500 rs) which made visiting Knuckles Range easy and fun. The owner even covered the petrol. He can also arrange a van with driver/guide for a day trip (7000-8000 rs). The owner and his colleague really provide a great service. The Sri-Lankan breakfast was also very nice and of decent size. The rooms (comfortable and clean) are located on the third floor of an events center (there was no wedding or other event while we were there), so this wasn’t a problem. Also visit “Food corner” for an authentic lunch or dinner experience.
Cons: Located next to a fairly busy street, so can be a bit loud in the morning (10 min walk from Matale city center).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved being far enough away from town but still walkable. We loved the seating area outside our room. The owner, Mr Kishor is a wonderful man who really embraced us. We joined him and his family to a nearby waterfall and had a lovely afternoon with them. One evening, we had dinner at A&B Events and it was fantastic. If we came back to Matala, we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Being five minutes from Matale township, the location is excellent. One could call the atmosphere "laid back", but that in no way means that service, cleanliness, approach from management and staff are second or third class. Rather, staff are available, and are encouraged to talk to the guests, even to the point of sitting down in conversation, if requested. This was one of the "relaxed extras". Owner/manager Kishor is certainly a "people person, and assisted in getting information for the times of the intercity from Matale to Colombo. Nothing was a problem. Where numerous expensive and high-flying places may have a 4 or 5 star rating, the A & B gets that rating from the guests who soon feel very much art of "the family".
Cons: NIL
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property is basic but the staff/ owner made our trip. The property is cheap and super clean. The balcony space is ample and my daughter loved sitting out chilling and getting cups of tea! We requested an extra bed and were not charged. Breakfast was yummy as was dinner & I always felt I was being under charged! My amazing marks are for Keshor, his fantastic family, the top notch day tour he gave us and the transport to our next location.
Cons: Err.... nothing!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great help with getting around and nice clean rooms
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: good quality guesthouse in central matale with the added bonus that the owner is a super guide!
6.8 Good
Pros: Decent enough for the price.
Cons: The bathroom smelled quite bad at times.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location, very friendly staff and small setup with 5 rooms I think. The view from the pool is fantastic, jungle, birds and other animals.
Cons: It is a bit remote, so dinner at the hotel. Which also could be a plus...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a wonderful stay. Tasty food. Friendly staff. Beautiful place. Nice pool.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent and Piyantha was extremely attentive and helpful. It was fun and charming to walk around the property and enjoy the farm and the forest.
Cons: The road sign is not placed well. As the property is huge, there are a few different approaches. We drove ourselves and google maps doesn't have any of the small roads in the system. Also where they have placed their sign on the main road, leads to a road that is severely washed out. The sign needs to be moved to a concrete road that is less than 100m where the sign is currently located. I think this is their foremost complaint.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: It was a very clean and calm place. Only three girls went, and it is very safe there. Our main concern was to find a clean and safe place, and this accommodate both our requirements. They are very concerned about the guests, and gave us lots of information about the places where we could find food, and even to find out the routs to our destination. And, since it is by the road side, Easy to find the place and easy to go to other places from there.

Pros: wifi connection was really good. there were mosquito nets. my friend liked a dog and a staff guy :) he was really helpful when we asked him for a plug adaptor!
Cons: honestly, i didn't get the feeling the sheets were clean, and there were no covers. the pillow was also not good. the window was facing front porch. another thing is the staff was collecting ID and kept it during whole stay on a table in the hall, so basically i could just see ID's if other people or even take it away! o_O kitchen was not so clean and not good in general. there was no hot water.

Pros: Located on the side of the hill, the guest house enjoys a beautiful and quiet location away from traffic noise and busy crowds. The owner was lovely and very helpful giving me tips and showing me a local place for dinner!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Definetly everything
8.0 Excellent
Pros: This is an interesting place to stay. First impression its a good place for the younger back packer set. We are seniors. The young man running this family effort is a very interesting young man. He has lived internationally, his English is awesome and he is a very unique dog lover in Sri Lanka. He owns three high bred dogs and he is working on a seed to use the place as a location stepping stone to develop programs for street dogs that would be beneficial to the neighbors safety. This is a good stop to learn about this effort and consider what you, if you are an animal lover, can do to help this effort along. He also did a great job setting us up for a local tour. Ours was a 2-day stay so very in and out. A lot of this place is its potential and there is much to say it is the right hands. In short it does turn out to be more than first impression and we are very glad we made this stop . We look forward to following its progress.
2.5 Mediocre

Pros: A fantastic and peacfull tea estate. A gem. The tea factory a few yards away is also worth a visit. Just notice it is owned by a muslim and no alcohol is permitted nor sold.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Incredible place : old Scottish house, with view on mountains and tea plantation, with a beautiful garden and swimming pool. Charming! The staff is really nice and dinner was good.
Cons: Everything was perfect!
7.0 Good
Pros: Hotel full of history. Inspiring place in the middle of the montains. The view is fantastic. The place makes you feel out of time. Antic fourniture. Free visit of the plantation and tea factory. Very interesting guide in the plantation. Makes you discover all the plants and trees, coffee, pepper, cloves, cinnamon.... Tasty food, good service. Lots of monkeys as the jungle is all around and beautiful flowers in the garden. Game room with chess, billard and baby foot.
Cons: Expensive room and food for a hotel with only one employee, even if he was a very good cook, provided a very good service and was very kind. Not enough hot water. The floor paint comes out on your feet. Bad wifi and no generator in case of electricity problem. Only 2 choices of dessert and 3 kinds of fruits. Small B&B have more. For the price, the owner should invest more in equipment and supplying.
6.3 Good
Pros: The situation, the view, the food and the service.
Cons: When we arrived the hotel was completely empty and we were looking for the staff for more than 20 Minutes. The first guy that came to us was drunk and a weird atmosphere settled. After that bad evening the experience was really nice. We had a good breakfast in front of the amazing view. The price was high and the swimming pool was empty
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptional value for money. Location, Staff and Service was over and beyond the expectations. Place has a panoramic view of the knuckles range. Equipped with newly built very nice pool, you got everything you want. Thanks, Terence and Raju for excellent service

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice helpful owner
6.3 Good
Pros: There is so many mosquitoes some times so be get ready and go
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The owner is kind and very friendly. The guest home is quiete simple but its clean and there is even a little comfi sitting area and the owner gives effort that you feel as comfortable as possible: prepared water you can boil in the little kitchen (but ask owner to explain), he bought toilet paper, he is looking after you, offered me a lift to town, gives advice for trips...). He lives with his family in the house behind and is easy available. There are little shops right next to it, where you can get everything what you need, even fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh curd and kithul ;) the cave temple is only 5mins walk away and absolutely worth to see (i recommend to go there about 4, ask for a little tour to get information about the history and stay til about 6pm that you get to hear the singing. For me the vibes were meditative and i enjoyed just sitting and beeing there. You can go easily also to matale town by a short ride by bus or tuk tuk. If you like to go for a hike to the buddha statue on the hill with a tiny little temple, its lovely and you can start walking right from accomodation. Beautiful walk, not too hard and amazing view!
Cons: Dont be irritated when you try to find it, it might be that the house is about 300m farer than the google maps location shows. Just pass the 'chilli restaurant' to your right side and keep going til you see the proper sign of the sanasuma home. The guest house is right at the main road - So sitting outside is not a joy, but inside its not noisy and most of the day i went out for hiking or temple visits anyway. Mosquito net would have been available on request. Dont hesitate for contacting the owner for anything you need ;)
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The owner was so helpful, he took us in his car for a day to the Knuckles region, we had a great time (we did pay for this service!) It’s close to a cool Buddhist cave temple. Great place to stop if you want a driver to Knuckles region or if you want a place to stay before going on a trek and camping trip.
Cons: Shared bathroom, although it was clean :) A little loud at times at night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice guest house. Safe for womens and children. Thank you so much. Very helpful family.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I had many journeys in my life and i can really say that's hard to meet owners or, in general, people like Chanaka while you're having a voyage. My time in Matale was simply perfect, he helped me in organazing the day trip around Knuckles Range's forest and explained me how to hike to the Matale's Buddha statue. I can only say thank you to him for his kindness. The hotel is central and close to the Aluviharaya Rock Cave Temple. There's also a restaurant next to the hotel ("Spicy Kitchen") and a shop where to buy water and useful items (like boots for hiking). Great experience!

Pros: Location is fantastic with amazing mountain views, also from our own terrace where we could enjoy sunrise and sunset behind the mountains . My room also had balcony with view to the fresh water swimming pool. Wonderful garden with lots of indigenous plants and lovely flowers, and a swing bench we loved. Nice walk on the premises through tea bushes down to a creek with waterfall. Very nice staff and excellent food. Best part: We had it all to ourselves! Must be the absolute best place in Knuckles.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything in the property was up to excellent standard. The room was very clean and tidy without any bad odor. There were comfortable beds including mosquito nets. The staff also very helpful for us. Whatever we asked from them they given to us. The food they made was very delicious. We loved the swimming pool since it is natural water. No chlorine at all. So we stayed in the pool for a long time. The location is amazing and breathtaking. We walked around the tea state and also to the near river. Very safe and very nice property. Highly Recommended. Thank you for the staff and will be back again soon.
4.3 Okay
Pros: The location is amazing. This is the single best thing about this place.
Cons: First of all, It's not a hotel. It has just 2 staffs n the room was nothing close to what's in the picture. I was told there is breakfast but the staffs had to go out and buy food from outside if we order. We denied it due to hygiene worry. Impossible to locate the hotel using Google map. Had to call the hotel and person in the other end asked me to call another person. Over all, it's a bad experience.
