Hotel Route-Inn Ena - Ena - Building

9.6 Excellent
Pros: breakfast is good. The environment is quiet and relax.
7.5 Good
Pros: Very roomy. Fabulous breakfast. Friendly and clean
Cons: Nothing
7.9 Good
Pros: Free breakfast and coffee
Cons: Beds very hard. Moldy smell in bathroom
9.2 Excellent
Pros: ➕ The hotel was chosen for the proximity to Ena station, two stations away from Nakatsugawa station which has bus connections to Magome and Tsumago. It is a highway hotel, but it lays within a 1 km. walk from Ena station (12-ish minutes walk, or 20-ish if you have rolling luggage). There are plenty of shops around and a convenience store nearby. The main attraction of the town, Hiroshige Art Museum, lays roughly in between the hotel and the station. ➕ The room was all fine, and decent in size. The price was reasonable. There was very good wireless connectivity, and a LAN cable for wired internet. There weren't too many plugs, only three, but the plugs at the desk aren't affected by the key switch, so it's possible to leave stuff to charge over a day. The window can be opened for ventilation (but there is no mosquito net unfortunately. ➕ There is a restaurant in the hotel, which seems to be decently priced. There are three vending machines for non-alchoholic and alcoholic drinks, and one for snacks. There are two sets of washer-dryers in the men onsen area, and i would assume there are also two in the women onsen area. ➕ The hot bath was very good. Breakfast, which is a good buffet, ends at nine, but fortunately it was possible to arrive ten minutes before the end, and still there were all the choices.
Cons: ➖ The hotel is big in size, so washer-dryers were always occupied, had to wait for an open slot. ➖ The breakfast ending at nine of the morning feels a bit too early.
7.9 Good
Pros: This hotel is about a 15 minute walk from Ena station and the big attraction in the area is the Hiroshige woodblock print museum which is very close to the station. A MUST see! The rooms are quite compact but very clean and the free coffee machine in the lobby is a big bonus. They also have an artificial Hot Spring (segregated) communal bath on the ground floor. I did not use them but I believe this chain has laundry facilities too. This is a good hotel for hikers about to embark on walking the Nakasendo trail. You can catch the train from Ena to Nakatsugawa to start the walk. Breakfast buffet is quite good too.
Cons: There are not many restaurant options in the area but we did find a good local pub style Izakaya about a 15 minute walk away.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: nice staff, good dinner and breakfast. Good hotel spa. Spacious room.
Cons: internet access is not good in the guest room
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The view from our room of the river was beautiful and peaceful. The staff was wonderful and spoke a little English. The buffet had a wide variety of Japanese and Continental food. The shuttle bus to the train station was very convenient.
Cons: This resort caters to Japanese tourists. The staff and facilities were wonderful, but it could be a bit difficult for non-japanese speakers. No tattoos in the onsen seems a bit old fashioned.
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: The buffet dinner
Cons: The room had a strong bad odour, the building was old and worn out and needs renovations and there was no shower facilities in the room. The location was too far out of Ena.
7.5 Good
Pros: friendly staff. nice on Sen.
Cons: transportation takes time to hotel. more shuttle recommended.

7.1 Good
Pros: Japanese style breakfast, helpful minibus provided by the hotel between Ena station and the hotel. Good onsen.
Cons: Not much around the hotel - it is quite isolated, away from the town (there is a FamilyMart nearby).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very cute and comfortable Japanese style accommodation. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was great
Cons: It is quite a distance from Ena station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was superb. Amy was very helpful. She volunteered to send us to Ena station everyday. Food was good. Onsen was also nice. I also like the hot water and green tea that they prepared for us every day.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Price is very good. Dinner n breakfast are excellent.
Cons: If private toilet is in the room will be perfect. Bath room is on the ground floor and hotel has no elevator, so for senior citizens like my group, the up and down is very tideous.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hospitality was top-notch! Prompt communication in English, which was really appreciated. The staff were very friendly and helpful too, and shuttled us from the station to the minshuku, and then back to the town centre again for some sightseeing. They offered recommendations for lunch, which turned out really tasty and we all enjoyed it very much. No worries about the shared bath and washroom facilities - clean and easy to use, with a nice and steaming hot onsen as well! Both dinner and breakfast were lovely. Our two rooms were cosy and spacious, with very comfortable futons and buckwheat pillows that gave us a great night of sleep. Would absolutely return for a stay if I were in the area again.
Cons: Nothing at all!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff were welcoming and the food was so homely. The baths were nice and the rooms were traditional Japanese.
Cons: We didn’t see much around but for us it was perfectly situated for walking the Nakasendō.
7.9 Good
Pros: I liked the traditional style and the possibility to use hot spring. If conctacted in advance, they provide free transfer service to pick us from and send us to Ena station
Cons: Curtain would be helpful to cover light (since windows are made of white paper and I woke up at 6 because of the sun light). There are not restaurants open for dinner in the nearby, and the station is more than 30 minutes far by feet (even if they offer free transfer service...but you have to know in advance the time of your arrival). We met only one persone of the staff speaking English

Pros: We arrived late and the owner left the lights on to make us find the house. The apartment is big and full of facilities (kitchen available, a huge shower, a nice living room). Super nice!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: i love the location and amenities. the room was very cosy, the kitchen facilities were great. the room had a great countryside and farm view and it was quiet. I had a good rest there. The host was very nice. She offered recommendations of places to visit and it enhanced my experience.
Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved Keiko. She collected us from the very cute Akutsi line train and was welcoming and helpful. We arrived about 6 pm and had to get to town to eat. She offered us a ride but we walked. A gorgeous country side and about 30 mins to some very nice restaurants. It is a really interesting area with lots to do. Then Keiko dropped us to the station when we left. Really helpful and very sweet and kind. Arigartou Keiko
Cons: There was nothing that we disliked
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked how it was a little away from the town, the seclusion and surrounding landscape were very peaceful!

Pros: Nice little pension in small historical town, the hosts where very kind and took us from the train station by car, on the next day they took us to by their car to Magome (starting point for kiso vally) it's about 30 mints by car !
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great little place in a town that seemed to be empty at the time, but has tourist potential. The owner doesn’t speak English so it was a bit challenging to make things work - but we managed nonetheless. She pointed us to go to Iwamura Castle, walk around and we discovered some great cafes and izakayas around the place for evening of beers....
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The kitchen was nice and big. The owner was incredibly nice and helpful. The shower-room was big and showers were super hot (a good thing!).
Cons: The first floor with the kitchen could be a bit chilly/cold, but the owner turned on the heaters pretty much all day, so not really a problem. Bring some extra clothes.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Toki, the host, is just wonderful! We stayed at a beautiful Ryokan. It was clean and calm. The small town Iwamura is just amazing. So unique! Thank you for a lovely time. We highly recommend the Goheimochi at the main street!
Cons: We loved the place! However, at the first night the four guests at the guest-house were smoking non stop in the shared dinning room. The smoke reached our room and the entire house was filled with smoke :(
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful hospitality and very clean facilities. The guest house is a fairly recent remodel in an older building. The town was cute and looks to be working on revitalizing their historic main street, I'd like to see how things progress going forward.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s located in a small town close to the famous villages of Magome and Tsumago. We arrived there just for chance and we discovered an other nice small and very quiet town in the area. From the hostel you can visit on food the ruins of the Iwamura Castle. We slept in a female shared room, we were alone in the room. Nice and comfortable rooms. Kitchen equipped with all necessary for cocking. Free coffee and tea. Clean showers and bathrooms. The woman who attended us was very kind, although she speaks very little English, but she found for us a near free parking and gave us very useful information.
Cons: We paid less in any other hostel during our trip.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The lady host is very kind and caring, she make sure we had our dinner the night we arrived. She even drove us to a restaurant when the nearby one was full. The guest house is clean, warm and comfortable.
Cons: nothing.

Pros: The food was excellent and walking by the river was nice. We stayed in the time of Covid and the staff were terrific.
Cons: The rooms are quite small and there is ducted air con which you can’t switch off. Fortunately, the window did open to allow fresh air. The actual location was not really ideal for us. We found Natkatsugawa a pretty boring place and it was 20 minutes away by shuttle that only went every hour.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly staff. I ran out of cash, as the only ATM in Magome is off when the post office is closed, so the girls at the front desk offered me a free ride to catch another free shuttle from an onsen to the train station. They also offered a very basic breakfast incl in the price, although it wasn't announced beforehand.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Despite not having any restaurant or convenience store nearby, the hostel sells some instant noodles, microwavable food, snacks and drinks so you will never starve. Pros: Marvellous breakfast with local trout and other Japanese specialities. The staff was wonderful with fluent English. Magome is a great place but nothing happens there after 5 pm so do have dinner at Magome Chaya as well!

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable and relaxing stay.
Cons: Everything met expectations from the description provided.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Magome Chaya is located right in the middle of small village Magome. It is the perfect place to start the hike to Tsumago. The premises are clean and the staff are helpful. Fluent English is spoken. There are basic kitchen facilities for preparing cold dishes and free tea. The onsen is a big plus, of course yukatas and tatami rooms are provided - exactly what we were looking for! We also loved the spontaneous evening with further guests in the common area.
Cons: They are not able to serve a vegetarian breakfast/dinner, as they cook with dashi. We were warned in advance though, so we had our food with us. All restaurants nearby close by 17 hrs.
7.0 Good
Pros: The ryokan is in a great location and staff were friendly and helpful.
Cons: It was very rustic, it could do with a bit of maintenance. The room was tired and the heating was on flat out all day and night to stay warm.

Cons: Room was cold when I arrived but once I turned on the heater, it was fine after a few minutes.

Tajimaya - Nakatsugawa - Building
14
9.1 Excellent (620 reviews)
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location along the beautiful Nakasendo route / Magome village section - convenient room charge
Cons: Bathroom and toilet outside the room - but understandable because of the good value room charge
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a gem of a minshuku sited within a beautiful, historical village which oozes charm by the bucket-load. Whilst the rooms are basic, they are more than comfortable with adequately padded futons, traditional tatami matting and more than enough warm bedding; we also had a room with a view in two directions, and the sunsets and the rooftop shows performed by the local cats, were amazing. The food here is superb - one of us has a seafood allergy, which we told the staff about when we booked months earlier than our stay. Staff confirmed our needs on our arrival and then catered brilliantly. We stayed for two nights and there were observable changes in what we were served for dinner and breakfast each day, so the variety was appreciated. And the food is plentiful and hugely varied - the 'rabbit apples' are particularly charming and made me nostalgic for a time when we did more than just plonk food into a plate... Anyway, I digress. The staff were always bustling and busy, but were never intrusive and on checking out and asking staff to ring a taxi, the owner magically appeared and insisted that he drop us at the highway to meet our bus, which was hugely appreciated. This was one of the accommodation highlights of our stay whilst we were in Japan and would recommend it wholeheartedly.
Cons: Tajimaya is a beautiful older building that has been added to over time. As the building is sited on a steep street, the building follows the contours of the land so has many ups and downs in the form of narrow and sometimes steep stairs. This was not an issue for us, but if stairs are a challenge we recommend contacting the owners and seeing if there are rooms that don't require (as) many stair excursions.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: What a magnificent place. Friendly staff and fantastic food, all immersed in awesome culture and history
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Amazing value and perfect location. Kind staff. Great food. The meals were really outstanding. Would absolutely stay here again.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: A true traditional guesthouse with wonderful hospitality and a great location in the heart of Magome village.
Cons: Not everyone is going to be ok with climbing up and down steep stairs to the shared baths and toilets.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely staff. Excellent breakfast and dinner. Central location in Magome, close to start of Magome-Tsumago trail. Although English is almost non-existent, this causes no communication problems at all. Just such a great place to stay.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything, from the welcome when we left our bags early, to when we returned later and shown our rooms where tea was prepared for us. The dinner and breakfast were exceptional and so delicious. Our hosts even enabled us to cancel one of the rooms we had booked as our daughter and partner had to return to Tokyo early (due to Covid-19 travel arrangements).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing atmosphere right on the Nakasendo trail. Breakfast and dinner were a great experience served with a smile by the host staff

Cons: The location was remote. It would be great to get away from city life. Great if you loved golfing.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice spacious rooms, good breakfast, pool and table tennis table, surroundings
5.0 Okay
Pros: When we complained that our first room had stains all over the carpet the staff moved us to a much nicer room.
Cons: The restaurant was closed, instead there were pot noodle type meals for sale in the reception area. The public areas of the hotel weren't as illustrated they were full of exercise equipment and a weird range of items for sale.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Stunning scenery and golf course. Well located to Tsumago. The service was excellent.
Cons: The furniture was a bit shabby although my husband considers this trivial.
7.5 Good
Pros: Hotel Windsor is located on a golf course. We got what was in effect a spacious suite, with two bedrooms and a living room. looking out on the course. There was a free ping pong and pool table in the lobby. Breakfast was included and was Japanese style, but we asked for and immediately received a western style breakfast that was great. Staff were kind and friendly.
Cons: The location is a bit remote, there is no restaurant on site so you need a car. The night staff spoke very little English. The decor was a bit dated but everything was clean and working.

Pros: A fabulous authentic experience. Stunning garden, beautiful house and amazing food. Everyone was charming. We loved it all.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful garden and buildings. Very friendly staff. Some of the best food we have had in Japan. This was a very special place and experience. Great place to go to visit hill towns on the Nakasendo trail.
Cons: No complaints. Loved it all
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The service was fantastic! We were picked up at the station and given a map of the Nakasendo trail. As we were going directly to Magome and walking it that day, they dropped us off there and took our luggage back to our room. Later that afternoon, after walking the trail and taking the train back to Nakatsuwaga, they picked us up a second time. Meals were well prepared and taken In our rooms, again with great service. As we were one of only two couples staying there that night, each couple had one of the two private baths to themselves. The gardens are beautiful and the view of the fall leaves right outside our windows were wonderful.
Cons: The shared bathing facilities are not large. It would be awkward to have to share them with strangers at such close quarters. Perhaps they stagger bathing times when it is full? The toilet and sink areas could use some updating, but that is a minor issue. I would stay here again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was absolutely delicious, cooked by a chef with ten years experience. It was served in our room. The setting was divine: a small two hundred year old house, set a Japanese garden. The Onsen was perfect for two people (we were the only guests staying that night). We were given free transport to & from Magome. Thank you Masaya.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Amazing food, the best we have had in our 2 weeks in Japan. Wonderful host family, look after you so well. Great access to Nakasendo Highway, kindly taken to the start of the Highway and collected from the station after our walk. Beautiful well kept garden, looked so good in the autumn leaves. Cosy houses and comfy futons. Just the best Japan experience.
Cons: There was nothing we did not like, you just need to be prepared for it being a traditional ryokan & all that comes with that.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food, the hospitality and the experience of staying in a 400year old house
Cons: A bit cold in winter
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very welcoming and friendly staff. We had our own small Japanese house, the room was so peaceful and relaxing. The meals were really delicious, dinner especially was amazing. It was really cute as they brought in each dish little by little, and it was always a different person from the staff, so we got to briefly meet everyone! We were there to walk the Nakesendo, the lodging is a bit far from the start of the trail, but they have a small bus to carry people around with which was great! They came to pick us up at the train station, then in the evening they brought us Naegi Castle to see the sunset. The next day they stopped us at the train station again so we could put our bags in a coin-locker, then dropped us off at the start of the trail.
Cons: No complaints, it was perfect.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: This was a very traditional house with a 400 year history. Thatched roof. There was living room for the kids to sleep on tatami mats and a separate bedroom for the parents. No shower/bath in the house but a public bath on the premises. The grounds were lovely. The hosts were very helpful in providing free transportation around town.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Authentic environment. Knowledgeable staff. Fabulous meals delivered to our accommodation.
Cons: Price per night
