Loved the look of the place from the outside..altho you quickly feel like an inconvenience being shuffled out of the way. The hotel is rich with history and has very nice decor..the room was big, with a big bathroom. The trexk to the room was ridiculous, having to take two elevators and very long walks on different levels while carrying your things. The room floor needed vacuumed, you could feel stuff on the carpet. After we checked in, we left to go get dinner and you can't get out of the gate without a special card given at the front desk. Well guess what- oh, and it cost $30 for this parking privilege.
Staff was very good. Room service excellent and the pools were great. I asked for a taxi to take me to SFO. Instead of a taxi, they had reserved a sedan which was more expensive than a taxi. I thought it was a little bit cheesy. I'm sure that some people want to drive to the airport in a fancier car but they should specify. I asked for a taxi, not a town car.

Nice pool, spa and exercise facilities. My kids had a blast at the pool - it was nicely heated and they enjoyed it despite the cooler February weather. Our room was below one of the hotel's restaurants. 6am on a sunday morning and isn't a great time to be woken up to the sounds of tables and chairs being moved. It's an old hotel so it's pretty loud. When I checked out they gave me a bit of a discount and said that when we checked in that the front desk should have warned us that our room was loud... they really just shouldn't rent out the rooms or if they do charge less.... but they'd rather put guests in a position where they have to complain to get a discount. Even with the discount if was an expensive weekend that wasn't as restful as you'd expect for the money.
The Sunday buffet at the Meritage was very good. The lap swimming in the pools and 3 free hours of childcare included in the resort fee was also very nice and an unexpected bonus. Ridiculously overpriced for what it was. $26 resort fee and $30 valet fee on top of over $200/night for a tiny old room that wouldn't even pass muster at a Best Western? The room was awful - outdated, small, old, musty and generally uncomfortable. Noisy from the hallway, the bed was saggy, the comforter stained and 2 adults plus a baby in a crib were way too many to fit in a tiny standard room.
Our oasis on the hill! The Claremont is a special place and I return there whenever I can; the location is central yet private and the staff is friendly, attentive, helpful and genuine. Each staff member, from the housekeeping staff to the manager, smiles and greets guests and is not only ready, but willing, to make your stay enjoyable. When there was an issue at check-in with the room assigned. Frank Flynn quickly and apologetically gave us another room with no question. In chatting with Fracesco (I'm sure I have not spelled his name correctly-my apologies!) in the lobby, we told him we were headed into the city the next day; he not only cautioned us about traffic and crowds in the Golden Gate Park area due to a concert, he recommended alternative areas to visit-and when he saw us a couple of days later, he asked how our trip went! A special shout-out also to Mohammad and Zachary who took care of us for breakfast in the Meritage restaurant-their service standards and guest treatment should be the envy of fine dining establishments everywhere. They made the start of our days happy and pleasant and really made an impact of the pleasure of staying at the Claremont! The charm of an old beauty like the Claremont is also sometimes what makes you miss some things you might find in a newer hotel; the HVAC system can be unreliable and loud, the bathroom does not have an exhaust fan, etc. But having noted that, the graciousness of the wide hallways and high ceilings easily make you overlook those modern facility differences!

Wonderful location. Grand old building which has been well maintained. It had been some years since I last stayed there and the place seemed in better shape than it was.
Location - close to everything including freeways. Facilities were excellent -- pool, exercise room, etc. They treated me like a second class citizen because I booked not directly through them. Promised me a fridge and I had to find a facilities guy who didn't talk to the front desk to get one. Told me there was a free breakfast buffet, but then it wasn't free.
They had my reservation listed as 2 double beds, when I in fact reserved and paid extra for the king deluxe room with a balcony. The receptionist acted as if I did not have a king reserved, until I physically showed her my reservation on my phone. At that point she then took responsibility for putting us in a king room like we reserved and paid for. Ridiculous.
Location The didn't honor the price I had on my conformation and charged me more.They claim to only get the reservation from Booking.Com and no prices.

Price was solid, room was clean, parking was free. Could hear everything going on around my room, woke up multiple times by random folks around my room. The hotel is fairly dated. The bed was not comfortable and nor were the pillows.
I booked and paid for a king balcony room and I didn't get that The hotel claimed that Kayak was responsible for the booking hence they couldn't accommodate my request for a king bed since they didn't have any available. I couldn't cancel the reservation neither so I feel I was robbed. I've use this site multiple times but I'm never using it again. I was robbed since the quality didn't compare to what I paid.

Upon first entrance, the rooms were very clean...although the hotel, windows and doors were disgustingly dirty. Staff at check in were amazing. Bed was super uncomfortable...pillows were flat and lumpy. The walls were super thin, so you could hear everything. Terrible.

Excellent family pool and hot tub, comfortable beds, easy access to a walking path on the waterfront, exceptionally friendly staff There is no complimentary breakfast, not even a box of corn flakes and coffee. Breakfast buffet was very expensive, so we drove out to a grocery store for food. For the in room coffee maker three guests received three packets of coffee and 2 creams!
The location was beautiful Restaurant and bar staff were extremely rude. Warning if waiter offers coffe and orange juice to be filled in the cups on the tables it's $5 each glass. our bed sheets were dirty and had black crumbs inside when opened it. There were also hookers roaming around at night.

Conveniently located in downtown Berkeley, across the street from the BART station and a couple blocks from the Cal campus. Some nice restaurants and bars nearby. Very nice accommodations and this was the quietest hotel I've ever stayed in. I never heard a single sound outside of my room. Rooms are a bit small but still very nice and comfortable.

I really liked everything about this place. My room was very stylish, and it came with all the usual amenities. The room was smaller, so I'm not sure if I would be happy there if I had to share the space with someone else. I don't know if all the rooms are that size, or if I just got a small room because I was by myself. For just me, it was the perfect size. The AC works well, which I've come to learn isn't a given at many "upscale" hotels. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It is right in the center of everything in Berkeley, so there are plenty of restaurants, drugstores, cafes, etc. within walking distance. It is conveniently located next to the downtown Berkeley BART station. I didn't have a car, so I didn't need to deal with parking, but I imagine it's not easy or cheap. The restaurant has really good food. There is plenty of seating in the lobby/bar area to meet with people to discuss business or have a couple drinks. I just really liked it here. They focus so much on helping each customer as much as possible, that several of us stood waiting at the check in desk for a really long time while one obnoxious customer waxed poetic about all the things he wanted to do while he was in Berkeley. They need to be more conscious of calling for help when a line starts to form.
I've stayed here several times over the last few years; I had a flawless, enjoyable experience each time. This last trip they even held some rather bulky packages / equipment which had arrived a week early for work, without question. The staff is always friendly, rooms are immaculately clean, and the location (right across Allston from the Downtown Berkeley BART, a block off Berkeley's campus, and close to several good dining experiences) is excellent.
Rooms were fine. Hotel was clean. Reception and bar service awful. Card keys did not work. A/C stopped working. Small, crowded lobby. Shattuck area is not inviting.

Since my son started attending Berkeley two years ago, I only stay at the Hotel Shattuck when visiting him. Thus far, I've stayed at there six times. I have NEVER been disappointed in the accommodations. Admittedly, some reviewers complain about the price. But, hey, considering the location, accommodations, staff, and amenities, I'm not going to complain.
The room was large and had a window seat and a fireplace. the breakfast was great--real scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sausage and fried potatoes as well as fresh pinapple and all the other usual ammenities. It was a perfect location for visiting my son's family in Rockridge--and easy drive. There weren't enough parking places. The sink was so small with no counter space (though they did provide a little cabinet over the toilet. the double bed was comfortable for one but when my husband arrived we sank in the middle. It would have been nice to have a place to plug in cell phones, etc. on both sides of the bed. A person we know who stayed there complained about having a very small room but we were in the main house and didn't have that problem.
Like staying in an old Victorian home. Surrounded by tended gardens , with a courtyard and airy breakfast room. My room had an old-fashioned appearance and a gas fireplace. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. location is great, a short walk from UC Berkeley. Parking was a bit tight. My bathroom could have used an upgrade, but worked well.

Staff was friendly and helpful during check in. Breakfast was great! Choose this option if you can. Freshly cooked sausage, bacon, and eggs among many other items. They also offered fresh baked cookies midday. Location was close to Oakland where we spent most of our time. Rooms were well kept. Wi-fi was good. Room service was delicious, but pricy (through an outside vendor). A bit confusing to figure out where the main office/concierge was from the parking lot because the inn has many small buildings. I picked the wrong building at first. An arrow sign pointing to the concierge would have been nice. No AC, but there was an operational ceiling fan and open window are enough to cool the room. 2 small parking lots on either side of the property. Thankfully, we always found a spot.
The staff is friendly, welcoming, laid back, and very gracious. Our room (the Honeymoon Suite, I believe) was enormous and had some charm. It's great to be walking distance from campus, and to have offstreet parking (although we had to use street parking overnight 2 of our 4 nights at the Rose Garden Inn). Breakfast is very good -- although there's no change day-to-day, so it gets a little boring if you're staying multiple days. The Rose Garden Inn is quirky & seems a little bit down on its heels. There was dust under the sink (which is in the room, not in the bathroom -- not even close to it) and there are places in & around the tub where the plaster suggests water leaks. Worse yet, untold thousands of gallons of water are wasted because the faucet & shower aren't water-conserving and the water just gushes out. And the difficulty sending a fax proved to be a problem for me. Our 3rd floor room was lovely, but too hot to spend much time in the bedroom during the day and early evening. The ceilings are high, so it would have been a challenge for some guests to negotiate the multiple flights of stairs to the third floor. The staff is lovely -- but, that said, the fax I sent myself (twice) finally arrived 2 days after I'd sent it; this should be an easy fix, but I'm not certain it will be. I'd stay here again, but it wouldn't necessarily be my first choice.
I really loved the place. It's quaint and gorgeous and a very serene setting. I was doing business at UC Berkeley and was able to walk from to the university. It is not as sterile as other hotels and has a lot of character. The rooms are a little small but were fine for what I was looking for. The price was right and it is overall a very pleasant place to stay. If I ever venture back into Berkeley I already know where I'm staying. I didn't have a microwave or refrigerator in my room but I had access to a microwave in the lobby and was able to keep my beer cold with ice.

A great introduction to the Berkeley scene for my grandson from the East Coast to check out my Alma Mater. An unexpected upgrade to the suite on the top floor added a special sparkle to the occasion. Walking distance to the campus was a great convenience, and several choices of nearby unusual restaurants made us wish we could have stayed longer. The layout of the breakfast area was a bit confusing; it took a while to figure out what was available and we came at a rather popular and congested time.
The Rose Garden Inn is exactly as advertised on its website: it is a peaceful, quaint "village" style hotel -- a nice place to come home to. It is protected by a security fence and has off-street, complementary (not protected) parking. The staff is super friendly. Our room had a king-size bed and a king-size sofa bed. The furniture is not new, and there was a clothes-iron burn on the carpet -- it was like coming home! You can hear the people in the room above the same way you can hear them when you are home, but we stayed in an expensive hotel in San Francisco last night, and people were yelling in the hallway in the middle of the night -- really, you depend on people to be polite. And you have to relax about it. Coffee in the room, microwave, box fan, luggage rack, fridge, and a gas FIREPLACE! The room was not bright like a Hampton Inn or a Holiday Inn, but it was cozy, low price, spacious, and clean. I come to town frequently to visit my Mom, and I'll be staying here again.
The view of San Francisco was really nice from our room. That's the only plus I can talk about this place. Everything else. For a 3 star hotel at a premium price, it was disappointing. While the beds seemed clean, they squeaked and creaked like they were from 20+ years old. The rugs where filthy looking with stains. And don't try using the advertised pool, where you first have to sign up for an available time slot and enforced to swim laps only. The breakfast, well, if you like bagels and cereal it'll do, but overall disappointing location. Absolutely would never stay here again.
Character, old world, charming. It has a good vibe. Restaurant upstairs is excellent with good selection of wine. Walking distance to Berkeley shops and other really good restaurants. The rooms were a wee bit small but comfortable. This is a very old building and built as a place of safe stay for women. There is parking but adds 20 bucks a day to your stay -not unusual.
The neighborhood. Excellent restaurants, bars, shops in walking distance. Awesomely diverse. Older hotel. Could use an update but still no problem. You are downtown so it is a little noisy and there are homeless people around. But....this is what Berkeley is so don't be surprised.
The room, facilities, and staff are great. Breakfast could use some work. It was okay, considering there is no kitchen on site. But it wasn't even good catered hot food.
Easy highway access and good response to requests. We had booked three rooms for a family business trip. One room had a cracked sink, two rooms had ill fitting front doors which let so much light under the door as a light was left on. One room had drapery that had holes in it.
The location was excellent for what we wanted to do. We were greeted warmly by the front desk. Our room was comfortable. Though we only stayed for one day, we were glad to have chosen this hotel. The water temp for the shower took awhile to get warm. Also, the tub water didn't drain properly.
Room is spacious with view and amenity look friendly. Internet connection is slow. Car parking is expensive.
Ariana at the front desk was incredibly helpful, professional and very friendly. Ariana should be commended for her customer service. I booked the room via Kayak. I thought I was getting a King Bed. When I checked in the front desk gal ( who was not very helpful!!) said that the hotel was oversold because there were 2 family reunions going on and she needed to put me up in another local hotel. I didn't have time to do that, as I needed to be in SF within the 1/2 hour. She allowed me to go up to a meeting room to change clothes and said that the meeting room had a pull out sofa. So, I told her that instead of running around Emeryville to another hotel, I would just take the sofabed. Ends up there wasn't a sofa bed. She also said she would send up my bags...but she didn't do that either! Housekeeping had to come in with a blow up mattress. NOT a comfortable night's sleep. However, a gal named Ariana was now working at the front desk. She gave me free parking and 2 vouchers for some food/wine. I also called Kayak and they spoke with the hotel and my room was comp'd all together. I appreciate that greatly...but would also like to mention that if the hotel was already oversold...I shouldn't have been able to reserve a room. A lot of hassle...but between Kayak and Ariana...it was resolved to my satisfaction. Thank you!
The hotel was very modern and clean which is a big plus for me, especially with children. I loved that it was so close to the Bay bridge and minutes away from SF. Staff was friendly and the overall location was nice and close to the water. n/a
I had a room I requested an early check-in by e-mail. I received a text saying I could check in at 2pm. Staff told me check in is at 3pm, period. Did not even check to see if rooms were available.
The bilinds were not fully functional. Minor maintenance. That's all.

Great room set up. Good desk and chair for a business traveler. Like the coffee in the lobby now as well. Sad you have done away with glassware in the room. I think of motels as having paper cups and nice hotels provide glasses. I enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day and don't like it in a paper cup. You have also dropped the level of amenities provided in the bathroom.
Easy highway access, decent size room and good response to problems. We didn't like being charges 15 a day for parking and that the common areas were unkept even in the early mornings, ie overflowing garbage cans, ashtrays and glasses left from the night before on the patio area.
The View and breakfast were great Elevator was dinging all night....and yes being so close to the elevator probably didn't help, but that is something that they should be able to mute for individual floors as needed
We booked through this site New Years Eve evening. Most hotels were full or costly. But we found this great deal at a great price. It over look the San Francisco bay, where we watched the fireworks at midnight. The night manager was very accommodating to our needs, especially with parking. To find a reasonable price room at a good hotel like the Hilton, I will recommend to everyone to use this site.
The valet parking service was too expensive and too slow.
I like the fact that the hotel was closed to everything that we needed from restaurants, bars and drugstores. The hotel staff were very friendly from the valet attendant to the front desk. Our flight got delayed and they were able to accommodate our check-in time. We understand that parking is an issued around the city but we thought it was expensive for the hotel to charge $45 for valet parking and there are a lot of homeless people walking around. I wouldn't walk around the city by yourself at night.

Everyone is friendly and makes you feel very welcome. I loved my room and the pub is fabulous. Great food, great atmosphere and a fun design in the room. I didn't find anything I didn't like.

There for a university tour on a Thursday, had a great stay. Room was comfortable and clean (for 4 of us on two double beds). Room was much bigger than SF hotels we had been at earlier in the week. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Lobby was comfortable and the restaurant was surprisingly good. Overall, great place for a short stay.

The hotel was located in the heart of Berkeley and only 25 mins away from San Francisco by train. It looks a bit daunting from the outside but inside it is extremely clean, staff are very friendly and the bar/restaurant is good. Rooms are not massive but adequate. Would recommend for a stay in Berkely or base to explore San Francisco.

It was pleasant and attractive, with staff who wanted to please It is very noisy. I think there should be a card in the room stating a reminder to be quiet, because construction is older and sound carrys.

I loved the location - so close to UC Berkeley. I also loved Henry's. Ate lunch there and had after shopping drinks. Housekeeping was very noisy - starting before 8 am on the floor I stayed on.

Nice staff. No noise problems. Free parking. The room had a microwave, an air conditioner, a small fridge and a free wireless Internet connection (though it often went off). Emails that I sent twice to the hotel went unanswered (though after I called them the problem was solved).
The helpfulness of the staff--they were extraordinary. Your site booked me for a nonsmoking 2-queen room, but it turned out that the motel only smoking rooms left. Nevertheless, they somehow found me a small non-smoking room for the first night, and then I was able to change to a larger non-smoking room the 2nd night for a better (non-Internet) rate. They also located my robe and gown that I had left in the 1st room. The Internet connection was very weak (2 bars) in both rooms that I stayed in.
Recent remodeling, with all new fixtures in the bathroom and sink area. It was very clean. The room was fairly quiet. The price was good for a hotel stay in the area. Only the typical stale hotel room smell.

Good place for short stay. The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The breakfast area is indeed tiny but you can take your food outside (weather permitting) or your room. We only stayed one night and it was a fine place. I was surprised to be charged more than expected (no taxes were included in the booking.com price so the bill was a bit higher than expected). Also we asked for a non-smoking room and found cigarette left overs on the floor; for the rest however it was a very clean place.

Ok hotel to visit the city of San Francisco. For American standaard a good continental breakfast. Hotel is according to the hotelmanagement structural not safe during a earthquak and they put that un a sign at the entrance. Would be good to mention that on the bookingsite. Very thin walls, you can hear the guest next door talking. The location doesnot look an area where you safely walk in the surrounding in the evening.
My room and bathroom The view sucks,it's dated needs renovation badly,no exciting feeling to be there...I had jet lag and fell off to sleep and I was very hungry when I woke up and so around 12:40am I got up and went downstairs to the very old candy/vending machine.The machine didn't take any bills and it has no debit card swipe and so I went to the front counter and the person there said that it only takes coins and so I went back up 3 flights to my room and but luck I had change.So I'm looking for the soda machine and it was upstairs and it was out of everything but the diet drinks.Not happy at all....Why does it cost $3.00 for a small drink? Then I had breakfast Saturday morning and I was just too through when I had just swallowed powdered eggs.I paid $170.00 a night and you mean to tell me that they can not afford real eggs?Then I get a cup of what I thought was apple juice and it was so nasty! And then I got a cup of orange juice and that was gross too!!! They only added about 5percent of juice and the rest was water... I mean REALLY???? Never again...
breakfast, parking, easy to find, no sound separation between unit. can hear snoring next door and squeaking from above. took over 4 hours to get someone out to unclog the toilet and the water underneath the tub.
Good breakfast. The hotel room was a nonsmoking room, however our sheets and the room all smelled like cigarette smoke. There was a mixup about our reservations - we had been billed as a no-show the day before. It seems to have been fixed, although I haven't gotten my credit card bill yet to see if I was actually charged for the extra night.
I had an event to attend in Berkeley and the hotel was convenient, affordable, and comfortable. I will visit again on my next trip. Everything was fine.

The bathroom looked recently remodeled with granite shower walls, counter, and floor tile. There was a large flat screen TV with directTV. The room had a refrigerator and microwave. The bed was comfortable. The location was good. The price was good. The room was dark and small. There is traffic noise from the street. Worst of all the room smelled sour and the air coming from the heater - AC unit was stale smelling. The continental breakfast was very basic, but I didn't expect much for the price we paid.

Great experience! Hotel was clean and well-kept. Rooms were very comfortable. Rooms facing the water were extremely quiet at night. A relief after staying at other hotels in Oakland with lots of street noise. Also a delight to look out at the water in the morning. Beds and desks were comfortable. Staff was generally very helpful. A couple times staff were curt, seemed irritated at doing their jobs. Also, they changed their shuttle service to only pick up and drop off at four locations, instead of anywhere within a three mile radius. The shuttle was still extremely helpful, and this wasn't that big of a deal, but it should have been properly advertised on their website ahead of time.
EVERYTHING! The customer service was outstanding, the rooms were large and very clean. Awesome location (it's worth the extra $ to have a water view room). I liked that they offer a free shuttle to Jack London Square. Parking at this hotel is FREE (unlike some other hotels nearby). The pool and bar is really nice, too. There wasn't anything I disliked about this hotel. I will definitely stay if I'm in the area again.
The staff was pleasant and the shuttle service was a nice convenience. Initial room assigned was already occupied. Hallways had an unpleasant odor. Building, rooms and furnishings all seemed in need of updating.
Staff was AMAZING. They bent over backwards to help me. They had free shuttle service to Downtown Oakland! Place was clean with delicious, free breakfast. Hands down, though, it was staff that made this place excellent! Nothing. I will stay here again. Best hotel in Oakland!
The check-in folks were friendly. Your description of having rooms on the bay side or a 'view of the city' was very deceiving. The view of the city was a view of interstate 880, and was incredibly noisy since you're located right on the edge of the interstate. It was the noisiest room I have ever stayed in, and there was no way to get any sleep. The rugs were not clean, and the plumbing in the room was poor.
The hotel was very clean with friendly staff. The atmosphere felt comfortable and safe. No complaints at all.
Free parking. We stayed here because there weren't any rooms free in San Francisco which was our destination. We stayed here for 4 days and overall it was very good. The biggest plus is polite and extremely friendly owner and his son who did us a favor after something went screwed with our reservations. Rooms are fairly clean, and really spacious with a tv inside. I gave max points for location but for Oakland, for San Francisco this location is good only if you have a car. We found some hair on the pillow on the first night. There was always problem with towels, every night we asked for 2 big towels for showering, and got them, but the next morning we would again be given 2 small ones. Got soap only after asking for it. Wireless working a bit, and then not working...
The hotel looked a little dingy from the outside, so we were pleasantly surprised when we walked into the room. We got a free upgrade at check in which we were very happy with. The room had free wifi and we could park our car close to the room for free. Staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is close to the bart station, so it's quick and easy to get to Berkeley. The neighborhood is not too nice, it's not a good place to walk around by yourself after dark and there was some noise outside during the night.

for trips to san francisco the hotel is very good located - near the highway; the rooms are very nice and clean the location of the hotel is in a dangerous area of oakland (we found out afterwards); someone broke in our rental car (nissan versa 4) and stole our holder for the navigation system .. not very important or expensive but because of the broken window in our car we had a lot of trouble; the hotel stuff didn't help us in any way to solve our problems .. they didn't even gave us the phone number of the police station ...
Nothing. I hated my room. The shower curtain had mold and some of the towels were ripped.
They had great customer service and the rooms were super clean. The bathroom, while clean, could use a bit of a face lift. This isn't necessarily a con, just a suggestion.
Dirty! Really dirty! I don't know why they got those good revives, I travel a lot, and read reviews before I book my hotels, this one was a totally mistake!

There is a shower only, no bath. The wall is thin. The noise were heared from the adjacent rooms or the passage. The room is narrow.
Clean rooms, close to downtown Oakland, waterfront views. Thin walls and ceiling, could hear everything our upstairs neighbors were saying and doing, including peeing into the toilet! We were placed in a weird room right off the lobby and could hear people arriving and checking in. Was not worth the money we paid.
The location is nice, good restaurants within walking distance in the area. The staff was pleasant and helpful and the wine & cheese hour was a nice touch. Everything was great with the exception of the thin walls, which unfortunately makes it a deal breaker for me.

Balcony, view, color, staff, proximity to office. told it'd be $20 for valet, but valet told me $25. I was charged $20. train sucked.
The room was incredibly dirty and the beds uncomfortable. To be specific there was an unflushed toilet with something not so pleasant upon our arrival into our room. Completely unacceptable. The television did not work either. I will NEVER stay at this hotel again.
The only thing we liked is its location, right next to Jack London Square. The bathroom is tiny and outdated. no tub for my children. Advertised "city view" was actually view of the back alley/parking lot. $25 valet parking was mandatory, no self parking. not going to recommend or stay there again.
Everything was perfect. Except the breakfast at the attached restaurant was fairly expensive and the service was not superbre, but the hotel itself is a true pleasure to stay in.
It's been years since I've stayed at Jack London Square. It's definitely gone up a step. Waterfront Hotel is an easy access location - both for driving and the train. Great restaurants both right in the Square and a short stroll away. The rooms are clean and comfortable and it was surprisingly quiet even with all the events during our stay. The ONLY drawback was the hallway maze to our room. If we just followed the numbers we eventually got there...but no two paths were the same. Our coffee maker was broken but they delivered hot coffee to us immediately on request. The TV was also out but the cable was replaced while we were out for dinner. Perfect service.
Great staff. Heater barely works (even though it's February); it's dark; the shower hangs so low I had to bend to use it and I'm only 5'7"; the decor is dark, depressing and cheap; the electric outlets were scarce--just an awful place that isn't worth it compared to other motels in Berkeley.
The location is great (North Berkeley) near plenty of restaurants. Exterior is quaintly decorated, interiors are nice and have a home-y touch. Unfortunately the walls are very thin so be prepared to hear conversations clearly from the adjacent rooms. The water lines are especially loud. I am not a light sleeper but it is difficult to rest when you're woken every time a neighbor turns on a sink. Additionally, like many motels of this grade, the WiFi is totally overloaded. It is possible to connect to the network and check your email if you're patient. Expect to get internet connectivity in 15 second intervals every 2 minutes or so.
If you like good old-fashioned funky motels, you'll love this one. It could be anywhere in America, but it is a bargain in Berkeley. And the sushi bar which shares the parking lot is terrific.
Good value for the money. Easy access to good restaurants and within walking distance (10-15min) from the bart. Great friendly staff. We got upgraded to a larger room (since they had the vacancy) for no extra cost, and also left our car there for the day (free parking) after checking out. Hotel is very old, and the facilities are run down. It was ok as a place to crash at for a night, but it's not a "nice" hotel by any stretch of the imagination.
That it was in the city of Berkeley. Filthy, run down with smelly rooms. There was an unstable patron who required an ambulance and several police cars. Blocking my car and more than probably scratching it. All this occurred late and was very disruptive to our sleep.
The only thing I liked about my stay here was its proximity to various business: Acme Bread, 4th Street shopping No AC - just a small round fan hung up on the corner of the room, old musty carpeting with a film on it (had to go to walgreens to purchase socks to wear when in), old linens/curtains/scratchy towels, indifferent help desk.

It was nice and quite , and nice big screen tv and comfortable beds. I love the fact they had a microwave , fridge , and coffee maker. It made is so nice. :) The bathrooms needed some work. Walls were cracked and chipping.
Would give negative stars. Dirty. Cum stained sheets. Smelled like mold and mildew. The guy working the desk the entire time was awful, offensive. Was like pulling teeth trying to get him to provide clean sheets. Awful. Don't recommend to anyone besides whores and crackheads.

Convenient, economical - friendly staff. Just what I needed for my stay in Berkeley. Location is very good. It is easy to get to by car and within easy walking distance of the Berkeley campus and other locations, including BART.
The room was basically clean and included a good selection of amenities like a fridge and microwave. There are several restaurants within walking distance, plus a BART (subway) station, and there's a Zipcar parking lot right next to the motel for those who can use them. It's a little far from downtown, but still not bad. Also, this is a minor thing, but in many cases if I wasn't out of the room by 9 AM or so, it wouldn't get cleaned. The front lobby has very little space, and parking is cramped.
Very Convenient in visiting UC Berkeley Campus.
Excellent stuff, peaceful location. No shampoo and hair drier in the bathroom .
