10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was great. Easy to get to and very quiet. Fred & Irena are absolutely lovey people. Friendly, caring and ready to accommodate all our needs. Wonderful welcome with a nice cup of coffee and desert snack. Fred gave us great information and directions to catch the train from Valkenburg to Maastricht where we spent a wonderful evening and enjoyed listening to part of the Andre Reiu concert from just outside the square perimeter. Would highly recommend and would definitely return.
Cons: None.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The Breakfast has been fanstatic - a reals Sunday brunch - with overwhelming view into the garden!
Hotel Janssen - Valkenburg

Overview Reviews
Located in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Hotel Janssen is within a 15-minute drive of Bonnefanten Museum and Basilica of Our Lady. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby and luggage storage. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location is superb, away from the busy streets by only a few meters and the breakfast was really lovely too. This is a great small hotel to explore this very interesting area from and only a short train journey in to Maastricht.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was amazing! So much choice! So well put together. Location was perfect, everything within walking distance. Rooms were great too. We had the room with the bathroom on the hallway. All perfectly clean. Weather was great that weekend: around 30 degrees so the airco was very helpful! "Livingroom" was very cosy. Options to play (board)games, comfy couches, plenty of drinks available and snacks. Last but not least: the owners! Great & lovely people! Would definitely recommend Hotel Janssen!
Cons: It's actually not something we didn't like but in our opinion worth to mention: because of the hallways being small, you can hear other guests entering their rooms on the same floor (you would hear the door being (un)locked). You can also clearly hear them when talking in the hallway. Once they entered their rooms, you couldn't hear them anymore (unless they were being loud).
9.3 Excellent
Cons: Excellent staff and location
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast and service
9.3 Excellent
Cons: Breakfast was regular, without anything hot appart from coffee.
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice breakfast. Limited options - but OK at the cheap price.
Cons: A bit old and worn hotel, but nice staff and cheap rates compensates for this
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I stayed in the Hotel Jansen during competing in a cycling race. I‘ve been very pleased with the service of the hotel, the possibility to store my bicycle in a secure place and the nice breakfast that keeped me going the next day. Thanks!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is conveniently situated in the centre of the city, and although there is no parking at the hotel itself the public parking is a very short walk away. We had no issues unloading our luggage before parking the car. Staff was helpful and friendly, and breakfast in the morning was very good.
Cons: Oh those stairs.... we had booked a twin room which per the description is indeed a (very) small room for 2 people. We had very little room to move around with our luggage. We also had not realized this room is on the third floor and given the small narrow steps, it was not easy getting our luggage (suit cases) to and from the room. Suggest to update the description not just to state "no elevator to reach this room" but to indicate on which floor it is located.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly check in, beer fridge in reception with some lovely beers. Room was nicely decorated and very clean. breakfast was nice. We were really happy with our stay, would stay again.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent

5.0 Okay
Pros: Grounds are beautiful
Cons: Property is in need of a renovation and not a good value for money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Peaceful and quiet, lovely surroundings.
Cons: Dogs were allowed
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place with old houses, lovely Catholic Church and good swimming pool and saunas!
Cons: Rooms need blind curtains as it’s really difficult to sleep with a lot of light coming through!! Also the bells of the church are nice but they can wake you up very early! Not a good cleaning as they never vacuum the floor... not nice with kinds!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful.
Cons: The bistro service was slow and menu had a limited choice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property
Cons: Lovely gardens and walking trails
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Dinner was excellent
Cons: V. Expensive.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff were extremely friendly, polite and courteous. The setting was beautiful- a really nice place to stay and relax .
Cons: While breakfast was excellent ( buffet) i do think it is overpriced.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nice area, good restaurant and bistro, very friendly staff, good swimmingpool, free minibar
Cons: Noisy, rooms are with floor tiles so every movement of chairs you hear from your neighbours. In addition apparently dogs are allowed and we had dogs above and next to us that barked if they hear somebody pass by. So even if the surroundings and rooms were ok, we did not get the peace and quiet that we were looking and paying for.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The bed linen & towels were lovely & clean. The room was very comfortable despite a single bed placed in the lounge area. The kitchen was terrific but it could have had a couple of larger tea-cups. The staff was exemplary and the service was tremendous.
Cons: With a 91 yr old mother in a wheelchair, there was nowhere in the apartment to shower her. I did enquire about a floor-level apartment with walk-in shower access when I first enquired via email and was informed that they would cater. The only way to shower her was to wind our way through the pool area & use the shower there. Also, there were steps to the restaurant areas which, made any entry almost impossible.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely beautiful!!
Cons: Nothing!

Pros: Very friendly hosts. Rooms nice and clean. Plenty of activities for the kids. And we loved the swimmingpool!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked the cleanliness of the apartment, which had everything we needed, and the beds were very comfy. Anita and her family were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and made us feel very welcome from day one. They speak English which was most helpful, and made communication between us very easy. Zonnehoeve is a great place to stay, it’s about 20-25 minutes walk into Valkenburg, or you can go by taxi for a few euros. The heated swimming pool was fab, and the grounds are very well kept, the play area which has a slide, swings, a sand pit and a trampoline etc, is great for the kids. The games room is good, with table tennis, a football table etc, for children and adults alike, and it has laundry facilities, which is very handy if you are staying for any length of time. My friends and I “HIGHLY RECOMMEND” Zonnehoeve, and are very much looking forward to staying again. Thank you Anita and family for your kind hospitality, it was very much appreciated!
Cons: There was nothing that we didn’t like about Zonnehoeve!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a wonderful place - we wish we had stayed longer! The pictures do not do this property justice- it is outstanding in every way! The facilities are just superb, the accommodation was huge, clean and really impressive, plus the owners were exceptionally kind; their daughter let our girls ride their pony and they went out of their way to be hospitable. The pool was really fabulous (open til late so we could swim after a full day out), as was the huge games room full of activities (we loved playing table football, ping pong and pool together). There are huge fields to play in with sports facilities too, plus a lovely children's trampoline. The owner's daughter spent a lot of time with our girls (using her superb English skills considering she is only a child herself) and she made their stay very special because she allowed them to brush the horses and ride. The atmosphere there is very peaceful - but we did not feel out of place with two smaller girls (aged 9 and 6)- in fact we felt very welcome. The rooms were large and the kitchen was fully equipped. It is far more homely and spacious than we expected. We walked into Valkenburg as a family (it's easily accessible on foot) and were just delighted with all the things to do there too- front the caves, to the castle to the pedestrianised streets full of restaurants, bars and really fantastic shops. Cocktails were in abundance! We also visited the theme park/ zoo Mondo Verde which was another delight as there were baby lions and tigers, rollercoasters and unlimited food/drink was included in the entry fee (just over 80 euros for the four of us). We could not have loved it more at this beautiful holiday home. We were so sad to go as it really was one of the best places we could have stayed! We elikd very much love to go back... it was better than we could ever have hoped for!
Cons: Nothing- it was all wonderful!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very child friendly, peaceful and comfortable. The whole family enjoyed our stay. The beds were comfortable and we slept well. Would’ve liked to have had more time to relax and enjoy the area. The hosts were very welcoming and knowledgeable.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Owners very helpful and courteous beautiful property lovely comfortable bed and excellent breakfast.
Cons: The only thing is we thought the location was nearer to a venue we were visiting due to information on website when we booked.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I don't think I have ever given a full 10 point score to any place I've stayed at. The property is an old farm, converted into a big house with a 19th century character (as far as I can say). Home made, rich and delicious breakfast. The hostes is very caring, helpful and nice. The location is excellent if one has business at the airport; ~900 m away. It is, however, located in a small vilage/hamlet, meaning the nearest town/vilage, where one can have a selection of restaurants and a shop is 2.5 km away (~30 min on foot). This allows for some motion after a day spent in front of the PC.
Cons: There is nothing I didn't like. The one thing that can be considered a drawback by some is the remotness of the location. But again, it depends what one is there for. Interested in nightlife and entertainment? Not the place for you.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nice people - room too old fashion - bathroom rudimentary - excellent breakfast Not adapted for business trip
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is serene, comfortable and authentic. Breakfast was awesome!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This place was a little off-the-beaten-path, but it happened to be exactly on our way by car. If you are looking for character, look no further! The room was very charming and authentic. Laurian was very personable. Her parents were lovely people and cooked/served us a sumptuous breakfast, much more than we could ever eat! We supposed they were just trying to make sure there were plenty of (delicious) choices. It was a very quiet spot and the courtyard was enchanting. The bed was very comfortable (one of us usually always has trouble sleeping) and we both slept very soundly! We only stayed one night because we were on a trip, so we didn't experience any other options that were there.
Cons: - just some dust, spiderwebs and a few spiders, but nothing major
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was excellent and the bed very confortable. Special mention to Laurian's parents, they are really lovely!
Cons: The place is not so easy to access by public transport (not impossible either).

7.0 Good
Pros: The room design and space . Location
Cons: The lady Receptionist very plain - uninterested. She did not like her job ..... No terras - drinks menu offered ... . Room bit neglected
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I have rarely seen a small European hotel like this with such a good breakfast. They even did omelets to order. Also rare is this hotel's proximity to the pretty little square that also has parking. This hotel was perfect for our last night before moving from Sittard.
Cons: The shower in the room allowed water all over the bathroom floor. Some water is normal for hotels in Europe but this was a lot of water. It was difficult to do other things in the bathroom after the shower.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice welcome, super comfortable, very good breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very kind staff, georgous room, fantastic breakfast. Thank you very much for our very pleasant stay.
6.8 Good
Pros: Excellent location. Helpful staff. Delicious breakfast.
Cons: Expensive suite had several draw backs. Little light because of small windows. Lighting needs attention as reading is difficult and going to the toilet at night has to happen in the dark or in a sea of light. This because all bathroom lights have to be turned on to get light in the toilet. Bulky unpractical furniture. Obviously difficult to clean. Prominent stain on chair, dust in places Impractical hand basin no place to put toiletries unsuitable taps. Lack of handrails for wet towels. All mentioned disappointments are not major but proof of inattention to detail and for the price paid one can expect more.
4.5 Okay
Pros: Good central location
Cons: I’m very surprised this is rated a four-star hotel; 3 stars would be far more appropriate. There were holes in the towels, no box spring under the mattress, the fake wooden floor was not flat, and the shower and toilet cubicle are not in a separate bathroom but only protected by frosted glass doors that open directly into the room. Not appropriate for friends. Though recently renovated the hotel already feels tired, and the breakfast leaves much to be desired - low quality croissants, a great deal of packaged food, overwhelmed staff.
5.5 Okay
Pros: The interior staircase is nice. The breakfast was ok, but very little vegetables or pastries.
Cons: The bathroom has no door- the sink is in the room and the WC and shower have a half door made of glass. The attic room is dark and unpleasant - a small window partially covered does not allow you to see anything outside. The bed head is under the slope so that you have a feeling of constriction. The info folder is old, dirty and torn. The furniture was dusty. The parking instruction are insufficient. People were stuck in the parking with no way out as the door closes after the car goes in. There is no phone signal so you cannot call for help…
9.5 Excellent
Pros: every thing was amazing
Cons: No parking limited breakfast

5.8 Okay
Pros: Friendly old lady who runs it. Good WiFi.
Cons: I booked a large room with double bed but were shown to a room with three single beds. I asked for the room I booked but the double bed was up against the wall on one side, and there were two extra single beds jammed into the room so there was no space, despite being advertised as a large room! So we used the triple single bed room because it had more space and slept like school kids in single beds on opposite sides of the room. If I had known in advance I never would have booked here. Two of the three beds had synthetic bedding. For the price I expected far better.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had very nice stay at this hotel. The welcome was really warm and nice despite the fact that we arrived late in the night. The rooms are cozy and clean, they have a nice authentic atmosphere and settings. The owners are wonderful people, it was really nice to meet them! We were also served by typical Dutch breakfast and thus we had amazing experience with Dutch culture! Advice to stay at this hotel, you are not going to regret about it!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We felt as if we were staying with family. From the moment we arrived we were treated with amazing hospitality. Until the time we left, after an outstanding spread for breakfast. Pros: Offered drink at arrival. Very good breakfast, didn't come short in anything. My wife got a small present as it was her birthday. Room is decent, not super luxurious, but worth the money. It's very central and close to parking.
Cons: Closest parking is expensive, need to park the car a little further away (5mins walking) for an €8,- a day ticket. But Valkenburg is just difficult with parking anyways.

Pros: Friendly and very helpful staff. Facility was clean and comfortable.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We come to Valkenburg every year for the Midsummer Prog Festival and it’s our second stay at the Hotel Lela. This time we had my in-laws with us. It really is a home from home. The location is perfect, a stone’s throw from the Openluchttheatre where the festival is held but away from the busy main streets. Denise is the most friendly and welcoming host, nothing is too much trouble! My father in law had bought a belt which was too loose and Denise’s father made a new hole for it. We had forgotten suncream and Denise brought us some to put on before we went out. Just a couple of examples of how she goes above and beyond to ensure the comfort of guests! Breakfast in the morning on the pretty terrace in front of the hotel was a particular highlight. Most of all, my in-laws loved it! We will be back next year.
Cons: Nothing not to love!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Localization near the city center. Friendly and helpful staff. Tipical family hotel.
Cons: The beds should have better (or more) pillows

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great rooms in a truly magnificent venue. Easy to find, near motorway exit south of Maastricht yet feeling rural. Parking is on own grounds via lit entrance avenue. Suitcases have to be carried into main building up grand staircase - but who cares about that when you see the building! Be prepared for a quirky lift inside. Rooms warm and comfortable, some with views. Bathrooms are odd: totally self contained plastic capsule inside an older room. USB chargers in room. Very quiet. Terrific breakfast. For an amazing visual experience, come here. Not cheap though.
Cons: No fault of the hotel but irritating non the less: the much lauded restaurant at the bottom of the street had closed (on a Friday night early January - it was open when we got to the hotel), and we only found out by walking there. Nothing else within walking distance. But thanks to Google and an enterprising son, we soon found another one and drove there. At the end of a long day driving, not what you want to happen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host was very friendly and helpful. The whole experience of staying in a castle for the first time was just magical. The room was great, very comfortable and we have a great night's sleep. The interior rooms are really cool, so is the funky lift! Breakfast was lush, probably the best ham and cheese I've had as part of a continental. As usual, we are never disappointed by Dutch hospitality and humour! We'll be back for sure in the summer to enjoy the surrounding countryside and Valkenberg in better weather.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A last minute stay as our journey had been delayed. Beautiful place. Lovely hosts. Great restaurant within walking distance. And they accepted dogs. Would have loved to stay longer.
4.5 Okay
Pros: The hotel actually is a castle on a hill / cliff, very beautiful from the outside. I made some gorgeous pictures in the evening. The staff are super friendly and make you feel very welcome: they are extremely nice people. The breakfast is fine, there was a very tasty bread.
Cons: 1. We paid aprox 350 eur for 2 nights. Definitely too much for what we got. The price is way to high and in my opinion the hotel deserves 3 stars instead of 4. 2. There is no restaurant in the hotel. It should be mentioned in a much more understandable way in booking.com . The hotel is a beautiful bed & breakfast, but NO WAY i consoder it a 4-star hotel, since there is a complete lack of services that should be given to the customer as such. 3. I stayed at many hotels in my life. Our room had the most uncomfortable bathtub / shower of my life. Very small, with the floor inclinated, with a metal tube on the ceiling. Not possible to take a pleasant shower / it required some kind of acrobacy to be used. 4. The toilet had traces of urin. It was not cleaned perfectly before our arrival. This was something that bothered me quite a lot. 5. One of our towels had holes in it and was dirty. All the towels have a very low quality, they are old and are not soft. 6. The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows way to soft. The matrass was moving during the night from the base, because its just a thin spongy matrass, not fixed in any way to the lower support. 7. There are no snacks in the minibar. The hotel has no restaurant (as mentioned above), so at least some cookies, nuts, chips should be available. 8. The windows are not isolating perfectly the room from wind and cold temperature. There are very small parts where the cold is entering fron the outside. Plus, the heating devices are switching off automatically during the night. So at 2-4 AM it was really cold in our room. 9. Overall my feeling is that the hotel lacks in terms of investments made. Everything is quite old and the services given are absolutely not enough for a 4-star hotel. The host (a very kind man and a woman, also extremely nice) are doing their best in order to make the guests feel welcome. The hotel would need a huge investment in terms of restructuring. And it should be more clean!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host was very kind and funny, and he made sure our vegan needs were also met! A classic, warm experience!
Cons: Netflix was not available and the liquor / beer qualitylevel was a bit average.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Full of character and old world charm.
Cons: Atmospheric and a fab breakfast!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Beautiful setting. Staff very nice. Very relaxed atmosphere.
Cons: Non.
6.8 Good
Pros: Ancient castle, atmosphere
Cons: Limited facilities, just overnight and breakfast.
7.0 Good
Pros: Surreal experience. Friendly staff and tasty breakfast
Cons: Bathroom was clean but very generic and it did not fit the profile of the place. They also took my payment right away even tho the payment was said to be taken later and no cancellation allowed even tho it says free cancellation.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The fireplace and cosy atmosphere made it a very special place!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Located just up the hill from a lovely village made for a tranquil stay and yet only 7 kilometres from bustling Maastricht where we went to Andre Rieu concert. Helpful, friend,y staff and good food.
Cons: As we had no car the bus service. Bus only takes 8 passengers. Hotel owner came to our rescue with lift into town at a small cost.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Scenic rural location Staff very pleasant and polite . Great place to relax.
Cons: The only downside was as we were in a rural setting we had to rely on a single bus service which did not run on a Sunday or after 10.30 at night.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: View from terrasse is great. Placed on hill along popular cycling route. Fun to watch eager weekend cyclists climb up hill while enjoying the hotels good breakfast on outdoor terrasse.
Cons: Relatively small but clean and neat room and bathroom. In the flightpath of not very busy local airport. Old house so a bit of creaking floors overhead but part of the charm and no problem.
6.3 Good
Pros: Lovely setting but location very remote . Great prompt bus service to Maastricht but quite expensive.
Cons: Menu in Restaurant was very very limited and there was no option to eat elsewhere within walking distance . If you want a steak or a Burger you will be out of luck .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was exactly what we wanted. Location, friendly helpful staff. Spotless clean. Good breakfast and food lovely. Just out of the city so was quiet in the evening. Great terrace and garden area.
Cons: Nothing not to like.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Good location for walking and scenery lovely. Very friendly staff.
Cons: Could have done with a more frequent bus service into the city.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location, quiet, just the birdsongs. Breakfast was really good, bacon & egg if you wanted it, muesli, fruit, yoghurt, lovely country bread, selection of cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit, little muffins, croissants, butter or healthy spread, selection of preserves, tea & coffee, orange, apple & pear juice. Only missing some fruit tea without black tea - caffeine free. Comfortable bed & a fan. Little short of cupboard space. Very steep stairs, needed help with the luggage. Also transport is s bit of an issue, it comes regularly, even on Sunday, Yvonne kindly rang up & booked it the day before as we needed to get into Maastricht AR concert. The bus only has 8 seats & after we got on, there was only one left. We also nearly got left in Maastricht as there were already 7 people on the bus. Taxi fare varies from 23 to 28€ Depending on traffic & whether the driver knows where it is. Ideal if you have a car.
Cons: Steep steps although I believe there might be a room on the ground floor. Transport.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice place with friendly owners . Old family run hotel with decent car park off road . Great bitterballen ! Nice Beer ! Whats not to like ?
