This is the fourth time that we had stayed at this hotel. We always stayed at this hotel because of the one bedroom full kitchen rooms. Its an okay hotel.
We stayed for a week in June 2013. We had a great vacation at Waikiki, but will not recommend this hotel or ever stay here again. This hotel is definitely family friendly, but our biggest issue is that is was not that clean and front desk staff was generally rude and not helpful. New carpet was definitely needed. My son walked around barefoot in the room for a few hours, and his foot was black just from that. The room smelled musty when we immediately walked in. The smell was there the whole week. Housekeeping staff was clearly under pressure to get as much done as possible, 'cleaning a room' was about a 10 minute process which is shocking considering it is a two bedroom 'suite' with a kitchenette. (The bedrooms are super small). Second, we had issues with the front desk staff from the beginning. When checking in, they had mixed up our reservations with another party with a similar last name. We were working through it the issue and it wasn't a big deal, however, the front desk person pretended to address it, but then he didn't. We had to ask him if we upset him because he was so abrasive, and he snapped at us very rudely. No matter, we moved all our stuff between the rooms ourselves. Our other interactions with the front desk were mixed. Sometimes good, but overall they we not welcoming. We aren't high maintenance, but just want people to understand that if you book a room here, this is a 'budget-friendly' option only. There are no other benefits to staying here.
We were situated on the 31st floor and it is a nice view looking at the water. The hotel is about 3 minutes walk from the beach (2.5 long blocks). The room was everything as described, clean, newish looking, free wifi... Maid service came everyday to spot clean and make the beds. There is a $15/day amenity fee charged at checkout and they do have garage parking for $15/day which I paid on checkout. AC worked great but hardly ever needed it for May weather. There is no restaurant on the premises but we found other places close by to eat and ABC stores were all over to buy groceries for snacks and what nots. Safeway and Walmart were not too far away to buy other stuff. Overall I enjoyed my stay here. The only way to make it better in my eyes would be to have the same type of room across from the beach and free parking, but that would be another Aston property... :-)
Clean hotel with full kitchen and a living room area and a sofa bed, perfect for small families. The bedroom and living room are divided for extra privacy. Three blocks from the famous Waikiki Beach.
During our five night stay at the Aston Waikiki Sunset hotel, the service we experienced was extremely disappointing. We had several issues with the room, the service and the staff. We even had to wait over two hours for our room to be 'finished' so that we could check in. The hotel and room were clean, but there was construction going on a week ahead of schedule. When we booked our room, we were not warned. We were also not warned when we checked in. Had we been informed we would not have stayed here. The noise from the construction was unbearable. It was so loud at times that we could not maintain a conversation. We were not in our room much, but when we were the noise was horrible. When I spoke with the front desk they were semi rude about the situation. The gentleman I spoke with asked me 'what do you want me to do about it?' - Really?!?!? We also found a cockroach on our kitchen floor. When I called the desk about it, the gentleman said that they are common in Hawaii and there was nothing they could do. All of that on top of the fact that the walls are so thin, we could hear our 'neighbor' cough and talk (normal volume, no yelling). The room was sub-standard for a three star hotel. there was no TV in the 'master bedroom' but there was in the second room (2 bedroom suite). The 'great location' is only a couple blocks from the beach, but there are on average 10 homeless people in that short distance. I do not mean to be judgmental, but they could do a better job of keeping these people away from the area. I was approached on multiple occasions being asked for money. I will never stay here again and I would recommend that people do not stay here. If you are looking for a cheap place to sleep (where you don't mind a horrible bed and lots of noise) then by all means. Other than that, I wouldn't stay here.
We enjoyed our stay at the Aston Waikiki Sunset. Our only issues were the short twin beds and the noisy air conditioner. The separate bedroom and full kitchen were a bonus.
Watch out for the $10/night 'activity' fee. Kinda like airline bagage fees. Sneaky way to get more money out of you. The walk to the beach is two long blocks. God forbid you forgot somethng and have to walk back to the hotel. If you get ocean view - get very high room as you will be looking mostly at ugly roof tops of other buildings.
The room I stayed in was excllent I loved everything about the room. The window view was beautiful looking at the diamond head.
This was our first trip to Honolulu, and we got an INSANE deal on the hotel room. We had a one-bedroom suite and a two-bedroom suite, both with full kitchens, and living rooms with sofa beds. Our views were spectacular (Diamondhead Mountain from the living room; oceanfront view from bedroom). The staff were very friendly and helpful. Two block walk to Waikiki Beach. Would definitely stay there again if we get the chance.
The location is great, easy to get to everything. The full kitchen and large living area were appreciated, as it gave us plenty of space and made it easy to have breakfast in the room each day. The king bed was very comfortable. However, the sofa bed was terrible, as was the roll-away we called for to replace it. A minor problem was the lack of an exhaust fan in the bathroom, which meant leaving the window open. The major problem we had was with the actual room door. It didn't close properly. We had to pull/push it forcefully to make sure it closed. One day, we returned to the room to find that the door hadn't been closed by housekeeping. Nothing was taken or damaged, but it was unnerving. It probably had only been like that for a short time, as housekeeping didn't clean the room until nearly 5 pm -- very late. Overall, we'd stay here again, as the space and location were excellent for the money.
I stayed for about 5 days in June 2011 with some friends - I believe we got what they called the one bedroom suite or condo. The A/C is excellent and works very well - so it's a huge plus if you're like me and not fond of the heat. The staff at the front desk is very friendly and helpful. The cleaning and maintenance staff is friendly enough, but it's nothing spectacular. The room is definitely dated (as is the rest of the hotel), and it's definitely not the cleanest, but I wouldn't call it filthy. Personally, I don't care to have my bed made or towel changed every single day - it's not like I'm sharing it with other people. Nonetheless, like others have mentioned about the Aston properties in general, cleaning is subpar. They don't do it that well. Again, unless you're a neat freak, it shouldn't be a bother. My biggest complaint were the AWFUL beds. The one in the bedroom was at least comfortable enough to fall asleep on (not that it's saying much). The sofa bed is just terrible and I hardly slept a wink on it. I also tried sleeping on the floor, which was a terrible idea. The location is AWESOME. There are tons of shops and food places within the mile radius. You will get sick of seeing those ABC stores! many of the skyrise hotels look the same, so make sure you remember your cross street. Also, the beach is only about a few blocks away. Fantastic! Near the shoreline, there are much more shops and activity going on. For a budget place, this definitely beats your standard motel. It's actually quite nice for what you pay. I enjoyed staying there, and it's nice to sit outside on the balcony and just look out. The room I stayed in didn't have an ocean view - just of the buildings and people below, but it was fine. The beach is only a few blocks away, after all.
The first appearance seemed horrible because we arrived at night and not have good lighting in the lobby and decor and carpets that need refurbishing. But the conclusion is that this very well located three blocks from the beach, the price relative to what you offer is very good. the reception and cleaning staff are excellent, very friendly. In the 6th floor has a shared pool, wifi in the room because it's just cable internet and I could not connect at any time, so we had to go to the 6th floor. on the 5th floor there is a market that sells all variety of things to eat and also rent equipment for snorkeling. The room is very comfortable, more if you go with the family because you have a double room with king bed but the mattress Staba not very good, a sofa bed in the living room and fully equipped kitchen. On each floor there is a disposition washes clothes washers and dryers coin operated. Paying or $ 10 per day resort fee you got the fee, which are growing in many hotels and you benefit from the internet service in the room is cable, movies to watch in the room through a kind of rent is in the lobby, I use a lot for the children. Parking is separate and charge $ 15 or free access per day you can come and go whenever you want but it is self parking, or good news is that this continued to the hotel very comfortable. I would go, but I hope to renew the decor a little old lady already.
We could not be happier with our accommodations, our family of 5 were very comfortable in the one bedroom suite. PRO's: The room was very clean and updated, the mountain views were incredible, and the quick walk to the beach was welcome. The staff was very friendly, we had a couple issues in the room where maintenance was required and the response time was always within 10 minutes! CON's: the location of the pool, no sun (minor, we were always at the beach) The elevators were slow. I would recommend this hotel to all with families.
This hotel is awesome. Stayed here 8/03/2011-8/09/2011 with my husband and nephew (16) son (8) and daughter (3). The beach was very close to walk to. Actually it was walking distance to everywhere. Shopping, food, beach. We stayed on the 11th floor and had a beautiful view of the mountain. It was gorgeous! The hotel pool was small but it was good enough for us. They pool was warm perfect for my little one. They even have a mini market located on the 5th floor that have everything. We didn't bring a stroller and we rented a stroller for a day from there for my daughter so we can walk the strip. Overall if you have a family I would diffinetly recommend the Aston Waikiki Sunset. The staff, I didn't talk too much but when I did they were very nice, housekeeping brought us towels pretty fast. Nothing to complain about.
We were very pleased with Aston Waikiki Sunset Resort. The condo was very clean and updated. The kitchen was supplied with every thing we needed for making all our meals for the week. There was also a great barbeque area with two gas grills to use. Our two young adult children loved using the tennis court also (just sign up ahead of time for court time on the fifth floor). Beach towels are availabe for daily use on the fourth floor. The staff was very accomodating with us leaving on a late flight: we were able to store our suitcases, use towels for the beach that day, and come back to use the pool showers to get ready for our shuttle to take us to the airport. Overall, it was everything we expected and more. We will definintely return there for our next vacation in Waikiki.
We had a great view from our balcony, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was a good size and very clean, the kitchen was immaculate and had most everything you would need to cook, if you did. The furniture in the living room was very uncomfortable, almost like sitting on a board. But the rooms were pretty spacious, the balcony had a good view, and as I said, the room had most all we needed. We felt the price was pretty steep, although we understand it is probably right up there with everyone else. The travel desk gentleman was extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. He talked to us to find out what we were looking for and then recommended tours that would fit what we wanted. Very helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the tours. The only complaint we had was the man who kept the front desk at night, he was not at all helpful, not friendly, and you just learned to leave him alone, don't ask any questions. All in all, a good experience and we enjoyed our stay.
We reserved a two-bedroom with Diamond Head view. The rooms are tiny, with barely any room to move around. Same with the bathroom with only a half-tub and the doorknob was broken half the time, took multiple tries every time to lock the bathroom door. Kitchen was fully stocked with utensils. Beds were okay, not the best I've slept in nor the worse. We didn't deal with the staff alot, but the times we did, they were not overtly friendly, just did their jobs, which is fine. Parking spaces are tight but very convenient access. It's about a 6-10 min. walk to Kuhio Beach part of Waikiki, another 5-10 min. if you want to get to where all the action is. The elevators are SLOW and the hallways had this strange odor and not well-lit. Nice wifi access on 6th floor, convenient. Overall, it's a good value if you're on a budget and okay with all the hotel's shortcomings.
We stayed here with our kids and in-laws in March. The price enabled us to get three rooms and spread out a little. Overall, we were happy with the rooms. Only a couple of blocks from Waikiki beach and other major attractions, but also out of the way. The rooms were reasonably clean and comfortable but nothing spectacular. There is a convenience store in the building which really is handy and priced reasonably. We did not use the kitchens, but they appeared to be decent although minimally stocked. Also, some may find that the kitchens are not as clean as they may like primarily because of their age and a little bit of build up on the cabinets over time. Staff were friendly and overall our experience was good.
We stayed here 4 days. The hotel has a good location and very friendly staff. The room was a little older than I expected it to be but wasn't that bad. We had the mountain view and it was beautiful.
this hotel is very old out dated and to make it comfortable have to paid extra * a night upgrade to the new room, this is not 3 star hotels....only stayed for 3 night out of 6 nights... not coming back again...
Horrible Hotel, rooms are old and outdated, furniture is beat up, beds are uncomfortable, A/C does not work properly, Elevators take forever, bathtub is designed for midgets. This property is being advertised as a hotel, it is NOT. It's a condotel.\nThe only good thing this property has it's Location.\nWill never stay there again.
This hotel is in a great location. Parking is extra. The hotel is an older highrise condo. We stayed in a 1 bdrm and could barely walk between the bed & dresser. The kitchen appliances and few utensils are in serious need of replacemnet. The room we stayed in was clean but not maintained . During our stay the hotel experienced a power failure most of 2 days so we had no air conditioning or hot water for showers. The staff were very friendly as they delivered flashlights to each room. We couldn't sleep the night we had no power because even with the windows open it was toohot & noisy. The hotel management was reluctant to reimburse us parking fee for the inconvenience. We didn't use the pool but it looked nice although small. They do have free internet if you use your laptop in a designated area.
One of the staff in the front desk was a little b*tchy, but I put up with it because regarding the fact that I come from a faster paced society, I decided to just 'hang loose' and enjoy the Hawaiian time. \nWhen I arrived in my room, my friends and I noticed that we smelled 'the smell of clean' Our room was extremely clean, and had this feeling of nostalgia due to the old fashioned design and aesthetics. Dealing with the heat and humidity, we appreciated the industrial strength a/c. A few minutes prior to our entering of our room, we decided to call housekeeping to provide us with more pillows, and they responded pretty fast; in just about 10 minutes. \nThe hotel pool is nothing to be raved about, but it is secluded and not many hotel guests go there. Unless you're feeling lucky that night, then it would be a perfect spot. \nWhen we decided to book for some Hawaiian activities, we went downstairs to the lobby where they have someone that can help you. There was this elderly lady named X who was very helpful and was fun to have a conversatioin with because of her thick accent, but overall she is the persron to go to if you want to engage in some activities. \nLastly, my experience at this hotel was acceptable. It had a kitchen, therefore im able to whip out some of my 5 star dishes, also known as cup o'noodles and left overs.
We, (family of four), have stayed at the Sunset on our last three trips to honolulu. The first\ntwo stays were fine. But this most recent one was not good at all. The carpet was badly stained, refrigerator leaked, garbage disposal did not work and the maid service was\nvery inadequate. On our next trip to honolulu we will be staying somewhere else.
This place could use major redecorating. Carpets were old and stained, and the room was dirty white, and the furniture has not been replaced in many years. The maid service lacked greatly. We were given two bath towels a day for four quests even after asking for more. If you overlook the way the room looks and want a pretty inexpensive place to stay it was not bad. The location is pretty good, and the view was also pretty good considering there are about six hotels placed in front of this one, blocking about half of the ocean view. It was nice to see they had security at the front door. Overall, I would recommend this place is you are not a picky person, otherwise you are better off paying more and staying somewhere nicer.
We were sold on the 'condo' aspect of this hotel. Once we arrived we were very disappointed, rooms smelled of smoke, carpets are dirty, bathrooms tiny, kichens mostly nonfunction. They are very understaffed, rooms weren't cleaned, mimiumal service. Unbelievable elevator wait time 10-20 minutes - the few maids seemed to be fighting the guests for the elevators. I wouldn't recommend this even if you get a deal. However if you do stay here, get a room on a lower floor so the walk down the stairs won't be as long.
