The pickup desk opens at 8am, Would should up a bit before 8am to get ahead of the line. They only have two staff to check-in a long line of people in the morning.

Don’t use Economy or A1 Rent-A-Car company. The only good thing I will say, is that their shuttle service to and from the airport was efficient and friendly.
TerraAug 2024
Book a compact or small truck/suv. The Dodge Ram was way too big. Really inconvenient for parking and narrow roadways on Oahu. Does provide a lot of space if you need it. I also suggest checking the vehicle for damage and documenting it when you pick up and when you drop off. They will hold you responsible for every little thing even if you didn't do it... so take the time to take the photos! Seriously!
Verified travelerAug 2024
Before renting a car. Make sure you have somewhere to park and the price. Some charges I saw were up to $40/day. And I noticed a lot of parking spaces near hotels and condos were hard to find.
Verified travelerJun 2024
I would suggest a small or compact suv vehicle as streets are narrow and rarely any parking.

Just rent the Tesla and be done with it, the island is confusing and the city is even more confusing just be aware that Pearl city has the only public charger that I’m aware of and the others are private party so you may not be able to use them even though they’re on the map. You might be waiting in line to charge.

Driving in Oahu was straight forward. Have patience, plan your route ahead of time. Don't book with a third party if you can help yourself. Book with someone who is accountable if that's even still a thing in 2024

Driving is busy and can be hectic. Just allow extra time and map where you’re going before driving. Also, police are everywhere so drive the speed limit and don’t be in a hurry.

I picked up Dodge mini-van, for 6 passengers and 6 big suitcases. It was perfectly fit but fuel consumption was no good. There are many road constructions out there, so you should take H1 freeway between airport and waikiki area. Nimitz and Ala-Moana Blvd is no use especially in peak time.

Driving was congested in certain areas. Plan ahead with enough time to get where you are going. I use Waze to find detours.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Honolulu
Across the islands of Hawaii, speed limits are famously low. Freeway limits typically range from 55 to 60 mph. Due to Honolulu's often narrow and winding highways, high-speed driving is not recommended. On certain roads, even 30 mph can be considered excessive. Be cautious of the 35-mph S-curve on the H-1 Interstate heading eastbound, between exits 18 and 19, and watch out for speed enforcement, as officers frequently patrol in unmarked police cars.
One of the most popular attractions in the neighboring city of Aiea is the Aiea Loop Trail. Many Honolulu residents and visitors head there on weekends to relax and recharge for the week ahead. Renting a car in Honolulu is a convenient way to access attractions like this. The trail is just 22 minutes from Honolulu's city center, about 11 miles away. With a rental car, you can also explore other exciting destinations in Aiea, such as Pearl Harbor and the Keāiwa Heiau State Recreation Area.
As a visitor to Honolulu, it’s best to steer clear of driving in the Waikiki Beach area, as it is the main tourist hotspot and naturally very busy. Driving around the town is similar to navigating through a city, so you can expect slow traffic and lots of pedestrians. You should also embrace the 'spirit of Aloha,' as locals are very relaxed when it comes to driving on Hawaiian roads. Drivers should remember to be polite, make space for merging cars, and thank other road users. Also, unless there’s an emergency, avoid using your horn.
Rush hour in Honolulu starts early, with busy weekday traffic occurring from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. In the afternoon, rush hour lasts from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., when drivers are heading outbound. Try to avoid driving your car on the surface streets of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, as these areas tend to be congested. You should also steer clear of the H-1 and H-2 interstates, as well as Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Boulevard, as traffic is heavy on these routes.
Ready to rent a car for your vacation in Honolulu? If you're traveling to Honolulu International Airport (HNL), you'll find a wide range of car rental options, both on-site and off-site. To rent a car directly from the airport, head to the rental offices, conveniently located next to the baggage claim area in Terminal 1. Alternatively, booking desks are located on the ground level of Terminal 2 in the Parking Garage. On the ground level, you'll also find a car rental shuttle stop in designated areas along the center median, just outside the baggage claim areas.
If you want the independence that comes with having your own set of wheels, avoid the slower public transport and less-safe mopeds by renting a car in Honolulu. Park along the coast to experience the natural beauty of Waikiki Beach, or take a road trip to the heights of Diamond Head volcanic crater for a unique view of Honolulu.
Honolulu is known for having some of the most expensive parking rates in the country. As expected, parking can be challenging in the tourist-heavy areas of Waikiki Beach. However, savvy drivers can take advantage of a few free parking spots. For instance, you can park all day at Ala Moana, Waikiki Shell, and the Ala Wai Canal area, where free, unlimited streetside parking is available. Additionally, Honolulu offers 50 parking lots and garages, with rates starting as low as $8 per day.

I didn’t realize that jeep was such a weird card to rent. The GPS dropped me in the middle of Honolulu twice when it failed to function. Interface is needlessly complicated with a bunch of switches that are different than other vehicles. That’s confusing. The so-called removable top is actually only two parts. It’s a tee top, but the roof doesn’t come off over the backseats or the way back. Doors slam hard and lack resistance. I will never rent another Jeep unless I absolutely need offloading capability because this made a terrible car to drive around in.

Got to the first vehicle they offered us and it was broken and had tears in the seats and missing parts of the interior. They then said that they didn’t have anything else in the full size suv that I paid for so I had to pay to upgrade to a smaller suv cause it was considered luxury. That vehicle had no shock and was the worst and bumpiest vehicle I have ever driven.

The vehicle on the website when booking was different to the actual vehicle I was allocated upon pick up. So wasn’t very pleased with this false advertising. Upon pick up the customer service was terrible, the lady at Sixt tried to make it out as if she was being helpful when in actual fact she wasnt. I would never book through Kayak and Sixt again. Highly do not recommend
Friendly staff, but not enough of them to handle morning line-up at the hotel location. Waited close to o 2 hours before I received a car to drive off. Car exterior was in good condition, but the back seats needed a shampoo as there were major stains on them.

It should have been known ahead of me flying in and picking up the car that even with a deposit I would not be allowed to rent certain cars without a credit card. I was willing to double my deposit and buy there insurance but still could not get car I reserved. I normally have my Amex on me but unfortunately left without it. Fortunately I had plenty of cash in my checking account to cover all expenses, so I thought. Really started our vacation out on a very bad start. Ended up with a tiny car for a family of 5 with luggage. If you are willing to over pay for the insurance and put a much larger deposit down. Then why fret over not having a Credit Card. They even ran a credit check when I said I left my Credit Card. It’s only a Jeep not a Maserati.
