Chef was amazing. Every meal outstanding.
Staff and hotel chef were fantastic. Room was large and completely comfortable. Great mix between old world Japan and modern luxury. Many personal touches. Cuisine provided for dinner ( and surprisingly breakfast), was Michelin star quality.
We loved everything about this stay - service, room, location, food - one of the best places we have ever stayed at. LOVED IT!
The service at this ryokan was second to none! The staff were very friendly & went above & beyond to make sure we had a good experience. Our room was traditionally decorated & incredibly comfortable. The wooden bath was a real luxury, & we appreciated the coffee machine & treats too. Do yourself a favour & book in the breakfast & dinner - the food was spectacular, it was a real highlight of our Japan trip! We would highly recommend this ryokan!
It was only a small issue but we stayed on the ground floor & could hear people walking around in the room above us. We got by with ear plugs, but if you're a light sleeper consider requesting a top floor room.
The Ryokan is located in the heart of old Kyoto and among picturesque streets. Lovely to walk around these streets by day and especially at night. Our booking was half-board and both breakfast and dinner were skilled Chef prepared traditional Japanese 'haute cuisine'. Spectacular preparation and flavours although for two consecutive nights, a little overpowering for conservative tastes - but then why try a Ryokan if not for the Japanese culinary experience? Splendid wooden tub/bath encouraging far too long relaxation - capable of inducing heat headache though so beware.
The room was lovely and larger than normal although access to the loo was a little cramped. Although there was a window on the ground floor, there was no view as light was from above. The aircon was necessary (in November) but the remote control is in Japanese - the guest book has an annotated diagram of the control but to understand the settings you have to compare Kanji text on the remote with that in the book - not easy for non-Japanese, and there was no real feedback from the aircon unit so never quite sure whether the setting chosen had actually applied. Difficult to control in practice. The staff are very friendly but insist on shoes off and stored in lockers at the door. It's Japan so that's their thing but it's a bit of a palaver to be honest. Fairly pricey so slight ambivalence on value for money - OK for a first experience, but would I return at that price; dunno.
