Pros: All of what we want in a hotel or B & B was there: a warm welcome, a very, very clean bathroom and bedroom, a comfortable bed, nice linens, a quiet setting and a good breakfast. In addition, we were in a chateau with a long history, (which the owner was happy to share with us) and one with beautiful outbuildings on a hill with a spectacular view. What a find!

Pros: Unbelievably beautiful chateau in the most incredible setting...another paradise to add to our list of "must returns". Etienne was the most wonderful host, spending time with us in the evening over some wine...telling us the history of his family home... If you are looking for a stopover or indeed a few days' stay far from the madding crowd then La Sicorie is for you...we will most definitely return. Thank you Etienne for one day that left us relaxed and ready for the onward journey.
Cons: We didn't like leaving!

Pros: The host, Etiene, was so friendly and thoughtful, providing a reassuring point of contact should we have questions. The views from the room were stunning. The room itself very large and well appointed. Beautiful bathroom with everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was filling, well presented and laid out in beautiful surroundings. The whole property was incredible and made you feel at home in a stately home or chateau

Overview Reviews

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Words fail me - an enchanting rustic rural French B&B in an amazing location. The owners are fantastically friendly and helpful. The property is charming, an ongoing restoration project, and a genuine slice of history. Breakfast was terrific, all of the guests sitting together at the large dining table and enjoying the home made yoghurt, jams, honey, bread, rice pudding (yes - rice pudding for breakfast, excellent!) and lovely strong coffee. This is a great location for families. The owners have an amazing family room (for their children & grandchildren) that has quirky beds and is stuffed full of books, games and kid's toys. This is one B&B where you won't be constantly hovering over your children to make sure they don't break anything. Our children (9yrs and 11yrs) were delighted by the peacocks, the ruins, the moat, the cat (and the mouse it caught). We had our bikes with us, and spent a lovely time riding from the Chateau to a nearby village along the nearby cycle route (old railway track, flat & no traffic) for a bite of lunch,
Cons: The only thing we didn't like was having to leave. We can't wait for an excuse to come back!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was excellent, Blandine provided home-made bread, jam and yoghourt as well as fresh fruit, it was all of highest quality and beautifully served. Blandine is a charming and energetic host who made us totally at home. She has interesting information about the Chateau and its past owners. The location is very peaceful and the old Chateau has a variety of architecture and remains from various periods, possibly even Roman although this remains to be established. The peacocks add to the ambience. For those who prefer to speak English Blandine's command of the language is exceptional.
Cons: Nothing, we would have stayed longer if it had been possible.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Such a friendly and welcoming host. Very pleasant company and went above and beyond your usual service to get up and make breakfast for me at 4.30 in the morning so I could make my ferry crossing in time. Such a tranquil setting. Great place to unwind.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The owners are totally charming, and the food far exceeded our expectations - almost everything was homemade, from locally sourced ingredients, and totally delicious. The raisin buns, still hot from the oven as part of the breakfast feast, will stay in my memory particularly.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We loved it! The hospitality of hosts was over the moon, very authentic castle which is 600 years old. There is a family of peacocks at the property, which gives it a little extra special feeling, home baked bread for breakfast, large library, charming living room with piano. So much better experience than chain hotels. A little gem in Normandie!
Cons: The only thing that was missing - lock on the door. Even though it is an old building with separate bedrooms and remote private location, you feel safe, I would feel better if I could lock the door.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Blandine and Daniel were amazing people we felt truly lucky to meet, your hospitality was absolutely amazing even lending us your car when we had a puncture, the amount of quality work you have got through during the renovation of the property is an inspiration to us all, the home cooking by Blandine and having evening dinner with our hosts was a fantastic experience, we will be back, Thanks
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was an amazing experience to stay in such a medieval chateau , the hospitality is outstanding and the food and wine sublime . We had a great nights sleep and the best freshest breakfast
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This is an historic and interesting property sympathetically refurbished through the vision and determination our hosts Blondine and Daniel. Our room was comfortable and a good breakfast of local produce was included. The location was convenient for an overnight stop when traveling to the Chanel ports

The shower delivered fast hot water straight away. The rooms are very clean but they are simply furnished and practical. No tv in the bedroom but one in the salon. Breakfasts good value and kitchen available to cook your own evening meal. St Denis au Gastines has a few shops and small supermarket.

Cons: One 7 gram body wash sachet per person is not enough for a shower before going out and a shower in the morning. No soap to wash hands after using the toilet. Towels worn. (Out of season, restaurants are likely to be closed. Be prepared to travel 9 km and preferably get in by 19:00)

Pros: Our chamber and facilities were astoundingly good! The owners were so very helpful and the table d'hote meals cooked for us were unsurpassed by any we have had in France over 40 years of travelling. What to say - we are reluctant to tell you about this gem as you will all want to go! The other thing is that the value for money for the chamber and the meals is almost unbelievable.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Alain & Isabelle were the best and most lovely hosts ever! Their castle is pretty remarkable for its history, art and culture. Upon request, they prepared a wonderful home-made dinner of pheasant terrine, scallops and the best creme brûlée. Breakfast was marvellous too. They made us feel like family and new friends. We hope to be back soon! Tip: Use Google maps as Waze brought us behind the chateau into the woods instead of to the entrance.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: One of the absolute highlights of my latest trip to France! Alain and Isabelle are gracious, welcoming, effortless hosts. A stay here is much more like being a house guest than being in a hotel, and as such it's a beautiful window into French life and hospitality. We arrived in the evening, were showed to our room and welcomed down for aperitifs in the "small room" which turned out to be a cozy reception room where we met the other guests and were served a little tartiflette and champagne before being invited through to the candle lit, wood paneled dining room with places set ready for guests and hosts around a large table. Dinner was spectacular: Pate, ham and bread, followed by ratatouille, glazed ham and vegetables. All served with wine to suit, of course. A little cheese to follow, then a parfait dessert with a delicious berry coulis. It wasn't fancy or pretentious; it was just great food in an idyllic setting with good company. Breakfast was similarly lovely, with the typical continental choice. In the morning we were treated to a tour of the grounds, which included a visit to their 400 year old magic tree which has a face if you look hard. Legend has it if you touch him, close your eyes and make a wish, he will lend you his energy and give you good fortune in achieving what you wished for. The stables are worth seeing - a stunning three story building in itself - where they keep a couple of friendly white cart horses. There's also a little Chapel with incredible acoustics where artists sometimes exhibit. We were invited to see the archive and reading rooms upstairs where documents from the construction and life of the chateau are kept; apparently its quite unusual to have so much dating back so far. The library on the first floor is gorgeous, and, of course, there's a secret passage if you look hard enough...
Cons: Absolutely nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved the excellent hospitality & terrific authentic castle. The hostess made us a wonderfull diner dining together with us with a bottle of good red wine (She ofered to open a bottle of Champagne but we prefered good red wine). In the morning my wife was taken to a lovly tour in her organuc veg. garden. We loved evry minit in the place. We were very soprised to find the autentic decoration andautentic picture on the walls. Wonderfull.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: As soon as we arrived we were treated like family. We were treated to champagne and light bites with Alain and Isabelle and another guest. We were then brought to the beautiful dining room for a delicious home made meal accompanied by red or white wine. After dinner we were taken for a walk in the woods to see the beautiful surrounds of the chateau. In the morning after a lovely breakfast with Alain we were taken on a historic tour of the chatea. All in all an amazing experience which we would highly recommend.
Cons: Nothing that we did not like.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality was very good, nothing was too much trouble, we were very well looked after. The property was amazing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The castle was wonderful, far from villages, close to a wood, on a meadow. Alain and Isabelle were so friendly and perfect hosts. Wonderful halls and rooms, and two lovely Cocker Spaniel dogs wondering around and trying to be petted
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Chateau full of history, scenic, amazing & picturesque
Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully located in tranquil grounds, this wonderful chateau offers something unique. It has all the character of a fairy tale chateau, with hosts who are incredibly friendly and relaxed. Isabel and Alain couldn’t have been better hosts, offering excellent breakfasts and wonderful evening meals which they share with you and any other guests around a huge table with wonderful conversation and food. The rooms are huge, with lovely antique furniture and give a real insight into life in a chateau. Our bedroom was glorious and enormous. The bathroom had plenty of hot water and towels. You are welcomed as friends and I would love to return.
Cons: We loved everything. Don’t expect a chateau to be pristine, with ceilings that high you may be lucky enough to see a hidden cobweb, but this is part of the charm of a real life chateau.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The place was like a fairy castle. Very ancient and kept to a high standard. Lovely scenery. Food was home made and delicious. Owners were exceptionally kind and welcoming
Cons: N/A

Pros: Good breakfast. Freshly boiled eggs in the morning for breakfast. We liked the patio outside our bedroom, although the weather was so cold and wet we were only able to sit out for a short while. There was a storm raging on our arrival. We were an hour early but Gilbert, our host, made us welcome. We were able to have the central heating radiator on to warm us. The en-suite bathroom, which was screened off from the bedroom, had a large wash basin and a walk in shower. The area was very tranquil and calm.
Cons: On our arrival, there was a strong smell in the house, we realised later that this was wet washing drying over the back of the sofas. (Bad weather is not the fault of the owner). The furnishings in our huge room were sparse..

Pros: We enjoyed a comfortable and very enjoyable stay. Michel, our host, was charming, welcoming, friendly and great company. The location is great for cycling, walking and enjoying nature. We had an evening meal during our stay which was delicious, well cooked and great value for money. Very happy to recommend
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Although we made a very last minute reservation, the host warmly welcomed us with local pear alcohol and his natural kindess. The room was small but clean and comfortable and the water very hot in the bathroom. We did not get a chance to see the surroundings in detail because we arrived late (already dark) and left with a foggy weather, but it was very calm and surrounded by old typical French farms. The house is well located with nearby main road to access the two main towns of the region, Domfront and Mayenne.
Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Michel was extremely friendly and spent a lot of time with us chatting whilst sharing with us his pear cider & Calvados. Well loved dog Jorkey also liked spending time with us and was friendly to the kids. The house was full of interesting artefacts from Michel's family's history. Very quiet location & the family room was a really good size.
Cons: Not much
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent host ,warm welcome, fantastic house with lots of history on the walls . We had booked to have evening meal with Michel which was very traditional French.
Cons: Tricky to find , it’s on the Caen-ouistreham cycle route so if lost (like us) follow the little cycle signs .
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Room spacious & warm. Comfortable bed. Great hot water throughout the stay. Host is charming and very welcoming, so is his lovely dog! You are really a guest in the host's house and we were made to feel very welcome. Good location for exploring the area. We had two evening meals - home cooking using local ingredients & plenty of cider!
Cons: Could do with a small chest of drawers for clothing.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic, enthusiastic host, easy to find late at night. Lovely breakfast using local products, ideal stopover

8.8 Excellent
Pros: lovely situation, great room, for which we paid extra, good evening meal if a little expensive for the standard. The breakfast let the whole thing down, only cooled food offered was boiled egg and the egg machine did not work, first egg did not cook, second was hard boiled after machine had been taken to pieces, far easier to cook an egg in the kitchen. I would return but try and negotiation a dinner b&b rate as we paid more than we expected.
Cons: Breakfast
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The peace and quiet the total lack
Cons: The lack of restaurant facilities on Sunday evening and all day Monday.
6.8 Good
Pros: The setting was stunning
Cons: Interior was a bit tired and the food was average.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is beautiful with the lake out back and the gardens are really nice
Cons: I would have liked an enclosed shower in my bathroom. I only had a bathtub with a hand held shower head - not ideal.
6.8 Good
Pros: The restaurant is excellent. Staff are friendly and helpful. Location is lovely on the lake.
Cons: Room was very average - dated and poor value. Pool was out of action and clearly been that way for some time. This is a big issue in my view and should be addressed asap. Wifi didnt work well outside reception.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is excellently located with a beautiful lake behind it that provides a lovely walk around it's perimeter - about 3.7 Km. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food in the restaurant is above average.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Restaurant in the hotel was amazing. Very cheap but great facilities including an outdoor pool. Located right on a lake with rentable water sports/bikes/pedalos etc. Great for running, hiking etc. Staff helpful and kind. I speak no French and they were very helpful.

Cons: nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A very clean and comfortable hotel in a quiet location off the main travel throughways (autoroutes). Near to lots to see and do in the Mayenne, a very pretty area. Great restaurant with a good breakfast and options for dinner. We had dinner one night which was very nice, well presented, and great value considering the high quality. The hotel location is near wonderful small towns and right near a recreation site with water and beach options but just distant enough to not be impacted by the recreation site. There is lovely walking options right outside the door. Very clean modern bathroom with spotless shower and good water pressure plus clean and very comfy bed. An historical building with a very modern renovated interior done just like the French do so well. Very helpful staff. Excellent stay.
Cons: Nothing really. It was a really nice stay. Fantastic value.

Pros: Dry secure outbuilding for the bikes. We were provided with a code to get into the room early, although staff were there anyway to welcome us. Pleasant meal in dining room (luckily as there wasn't anywhere else in the village that looked open). Great location for cyclists doing the 'Velo Francette' route.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality and surroundings.
Cons: Not their fault, but if you are interested in WWII historical sites the drive every day is a bit far. If you are interested in peace and quiet and country small towns it is perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptional hosts warm & friendly welcome, made to feel like one of the family , spotless & everything you needed would highly recommend
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kim and Steve are the most wonderful hosts. They made a genuine effort that we would have a relaxing stay in their bnb. The bnb is located in the countryside not far from a few small towns. The property was spotless clean. We enjoyed a welcome drink and a session in the hot tub
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Steve and Kim are extremely kind, welcoming and helpful. They were flexible when arranging check-in/out, very helpful providing additional services (eg. iron & ironing board), and kind and entertaining for the little time we could chat. Their cosy house is hidden away from a secondary street amid the green in a relaxing context with fantastic views. Great breakfast!
Cons: We loved our stay but it is important to know that the house is far apart from the closest village and thus from services (about 5 mins by car).

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Bedroom/Bathroom very clean. Would recommend for an overnight stop.
Cons: We had dinner, poor choice.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: We were given a warm welcome but unfortunately the restaurant was closed on a Sunday evening. The room was fine and the beds comfortable. As it turned out, the position (our of town) turned out to be helpful, chiefly because there was a bad problem with one of the cycles. This was resolved thanks to a welder whose work-shop was a short ride away from the hotel. There was a cycle shop nearby too (Giant) but being a Monday, this was closed. The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. We were able to store our cycles in a secure room in the main part of the hotel. We felt that we had received good value for money. Breakfast was good and plentiful.
Cons: We arrived at this motel on a Sunday evening to find that the restaurant was closed. After cycling a long distance, this was disappointing - the only place within walking distance was a McDonalds which we then ate in our room. This made the experience less than great.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Secure parking for motorbike. Clean and large rooms. Check in was quick. Friendly staff. Walking distance to the supermarket.
Cons: Not the hotels fault but had to walk on the grass verge to get to the supermarket. There was a pavement for most of the way but not all. We would still use this hotel again.
4.5 Okay
Cons: We booked for the weekend. As my wife and I don't have a great grasp of speaking french we wanted to stay at a hotel with a bar and restaurant. Unfortunately this is either not stated or not stated clearly when booking that the restaurant is not open on weekends which is bizarre. We went and booked into another hotel and was still charge for a nights stay. Needs to be stated clearer that there is no restaurants on weekends!
7.5 Good
Pros: Stayed 1 night on a bike tour. Comfortable out of town hotel, but handy for the riverside path to Mayenne.
7.0 Good
Pros: Good location, close to a big supermarket.
Cons: Asked to extend my stay by a day during check-in. Was told it was done, only to get a panic phone call on the last day telling me to pick up my stuff and vacate the room. Had to leave work and urgently drive over to relocate into another room, only to find out my key card wasn't working. Staff sent me back and forth (to the second floor with no lift) no less than 3 times, only to find out each time that indeed, the key card was still not working. Overall, not a bad motel (with an M, not an H), but the amateur customer service ruined an otherwise good impression. Also not clear why the WiFi required a new login each day - it's annoying in the Hilton, and double annoying in a private small town establishment.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Well located for Mayenne river cycle path. Friendly receptionist. Very clean comfortable room with direct access to outside. Secure parking. Quiet despite being close to road
Cons: No hairdryer in room. Despite being very clean the bed had an odour of a dog having been in the room.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and tidy. Room nice and warm.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: breakfast is what you expect good
Cons: nothing to add
