The staff at OBI manages to keep everything clean and tidy in a quite big hostel. Good wifi, lockers available and roomy/comfy living room. Well located and organised.
The hostel is located at walkable distance from Ottawa downtown and the main museums/attractions. The only thing is that here are a couple of charities or centers to help homeless people in the area. Inevitably, they hang out in the neighborhood but seemed to mind their own business.
The shared bathrooms (2 on my floor) seemed recently refurbished so they were okay. The shower water had a big volume and was sufficiently hot. The location is excellent and very close to Metro. But do avoid the backstreet close by the homeless house, you may be shocked to run into some shady characters. (not that I’m unsympathetic but it was alarming) Did meet a cool guy from the same room.
Everything else. I’ll begin by saying that personally I haven’t had much experience with hostels (only once before and it was nowhere like this) so my expectations might have been unrealistic. Yet the place gave the impression of a dirt-cheap, dimly-lit, run-down, cockroach-infested (didn’t see any but wouldn’t be surprised if I did) dumphole that I’ve spent literally 1 hour after check-in cowered in my shaky bunk bed contemplating running away. (ended up there because the other place I enjoyed staying at was fully booked and I wasn’t able to extend) Literally, who’d pull that suspicious-looking dirty old blanket over the head to sleep? (luckily it was still warm enough to sleep in my day clothes) They do give you a pillow case, a mattress case and a bed sheet for placebo effect (as if!) though. But no blanket case. In the 2nd morning after my two nights’ traumatic stay I beat everyone to the shower at 6:00 and flipped the place the bird. Definitely some life experience to tell grandkids about.
I paid difference to get a private room that is next to a public bathroom, and that's how nightmare started: I was waken up @5 clock in the morning someon took a shower. Every time someone uses bathroom I can hear as there is no wall between! When I "complained" this to manager next morning, all I got is just a shrug even without a sympathy "that is what hostle about!" Hostle=Hostile
We really enjoyed our stay. Hostel is quite querky! Staff are great - very friendly.
More washrooms please!
