Pros: Everything! The hosts were spectacular! Very warm, welcoming, homely and charasmatic :) we enjoyed every minute of our stay, their breakfast is great & delicious and to top it off we had the opportunity to taste their homemade liquors which unfortunately is not for sale but nevertheless very sweet of them to share it with us. The room was great & pretty. The pool area is gorgeous. And all the animals, especially the dogs were a treat.

Quinta da Vila Maria - Portalegre - Building

9.6 Excellent (56 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very Special Exceptional I and my family spent one night in this very nice restored Quinta with original period features and spirit surrounded by old vineyeard. We were greatly fascinated by the place and it was a very special experience – Jane and Edd told us wine cellar story, showed all facilities and we could imagine how people in this Quinta lived through ages growing vineyard and making wine. We like such historical trips so much and would like to thank the hosts for this once more! The apartment is very spacious, clean and charming with every detail in it‘s place. Breakfast is excellent, especially Jane‘s banana cake we liked so much :) Highly recommended!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay at Quinta da Vila Maria. The beautifully restored old farmhouse is located in a very beautiful area and is a good base for exploring the area. We were warmly welcomed by Ed and Jane in their winecellar and they shared the really interesting story of the house with us. They are very attentive and helpful. We stayed in a comfortable (very clean) lovely apartment with a large shared terrace. The beautiful quiet garden is also a vineyard and has a nice pond with frogs and several places to chill. There is enough private parking. The breakfast with fresh bread, fresh fruits, cheese, meat and homemade jams was put in the fridge the evening before. Every day there was also delicious homemade cake. We stayed here for 3 nights but would have liked to stay longer to view the beautiful surroundings and enjoy the beautiful garden. Conclusion: if you want to visit the surroundings of Portalegre and visit the beautiful Parque Natural da Serra de S. Marmede or Elvas then Quinta da Vila Maria is highly recommended. Ed and Jane, thank you very much for your hospitality and good care!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great hospitality, very nice and very clean property, attention to specific needs of our family. Interesting location and relaxing sorrounding. Perfect stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful stay with excellent breakfast.
Cons: Nothing.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Jane and Ed was a superb host. They were so kind and friendly, providing us information about the city and activities. Their recommended restaurant which Jane kindly booked in advance was one of the best meal we had in Portugal! The house was very well renovated with pretty decoration, wish I had a couple more days to chill there!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Jane and Ed made us feel thoroughly welcome from the time we arrived, providing us with our choice of chilled drinks straight away. Nothing seemed to much trouble for them, including helping us with the difficult task of paying retrospectively for driving on the toll motorways with our UK registered car. Their advice and local knowledge helped us get the most out of our stay. The breakfasts were excellent and tailored to our preferences as they asked what we did and did not like. The location is delightful; peaceful and with their vineyard to walk around. Close by in the village there is an excellent swimming pool which is very cheap to use. We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay and wished it could have been longer.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay at Quinta da Vila Maria was one of the highlights of our trip. The property itself is very serene with lots of great sitting areas to relax and unwind. Our suite came with our very own kitchen, tv, and living area -- overall, we found the place was well thought-out and well-equipped. Jane and Ed as hosts are incredibly pleasant and we had great conversations with them. They provided us with useful local advice / tips for restaurants and treks.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Jane and Ed (the hosts) have been extremely welcoming and friendly and would surely get out of their way to make a guest feel at home in their B&B and in the area (Alentejo) as well. The room was spacious and very clean. Quiet and beautiful part of Portugal that deserves attention.
Cons: There is no restaurant in walking distance. Not a big problem and there are several places within a short drive. It is just a fact to know.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property is spotless and extremely comfortable. Our hosts Jane and Ed were so welcoming and helpful. The breakfast provided was absolutely delicious. We had a wonderful stay here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We really liked it there. Sadly we had only one night to stay. It was such a nice ambient, the old building, the style of the room, the high ceiling. The check in was very personal and friendly with the owners. They gave us great tips for walking in the area. The most special point for us, after 2 weeks roadtrip in a couple of different location and places to stay, was the perfect cleanliness, it was just a place to feel at home at once. Thanks again for the pleasant stay.

Pros: We turned up 2 hours earlier than expected but the welcome could have not been better. Manuela and Jose (I am so sorry if I have spent your names wrong) took us up to our room and shared a glass of delicious Port with us, as is their tradition. Jose who speaks really excellent english, was exceptionally helpful in places to visit in the area and traditional Portuguese restaurants in the town - Sal, Alio Etc was superb!!! (Please visit) Jose was also a fountain of useful information every time we saw him. Manuela’s breakfasts were superb - the best we have had in all the time we have been in Portugal. Our room was amazing!!! Full of character, authentic antique furniture and really high ceilings. It was like staying in a lovely museum. If you ever get the chance to stay in this lovely property please take it as you will not be disappointed. We hope we will be back one day. We were also given of option of parking our motorbike in their garage if we had wanted - but as there was there was plenty of parking outside we were quite happy to leave it there.
Cons: Nothing - it was exceptional.

Cons: Breakfast could have had more variety, and no cooked options

Pros: perfect location for our orienteering trip hosts were very helpful and even took me to see a doctor for a small incident
8.8 Excellent
Pros: A lovel, quaint accomodation in a house that is 250 years old, with matching furniture. The couple who met us were delightful and the elderly gentleman insisted on carrying our cases to our room. A pretty and charming courtyard garden could be seen from our room. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful, with the hostess bringing in Portugeses treats for us to taste.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were a charming couple. They give us a lovely warm welcome and made sure that we had everything we needed to be comfortable. They also took the time to explain what there is to see in their town and where to eat. The accommodation is in their 250 year old family home. It is a real delight. I would really recommend staying here.

Pros: The setting of the location.
Cons: Unmade driveway.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Pretty much everything! The staff was super friendly and helpful. I was greeted by Lucia, a lovely lady that told me about the story of the hotel, showed me around and suggested the must sees of the area. It's location is great, just about 20 mins drive from Marvão and Castelo de Vide (really, go there). The breakfast had homemade cake (delicious) and amazing fresh and juicy fruit. The room was super spacious and clean every day. The bed was massive and so comfortable. Due to the rural location, I had the best night's sleep without any noise. The surrounding area is super picturesque, with the oliver trees, ruins and the swimming pool. I will definitely recommend this place to everyone I know and if possible go back one day.
Cons: Even though it didn't interfere with my lovely stay, I would suggest that the pathway between the main road and the hotel should definitely be improved. I planned my days to avoid using it as much as possible as I was scared it would damage my tires. A couple of lights along this pathway would also help for those wanting to go out for a walk later in the day.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Idyllic location, very peaceful, with old olive trees, ruins of the old convent, wild flowers and birdsong. Simple, rustic and very welcoming. Wonderful friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was freshly made and plentiful with a wonderful smell of fresh bread wafting from the kitchen as you opened the bedroom door!
Cons: Nothing it was all lovely Only thing to note is there isn’t a restaurant for evening meals at the convent. There is one in the village ( walking distance about 600m) which is fine food wise but didn’t feel very welcoming so we ate in Portalegre the second night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was an amazing experience to stay in this old convent and experience the extraordinary atmosphere created by the beautiful old furniture and amazing collection of medieval armor and old costumes. The staff were exceptionally nice, friendly and helpful. The young receptionist (Anna i think) went out of her way to help us as we'd arrived late in the evening as our car had broken down. She very kindly drove us to the nearby restaurant and came & fetched us when we'd finished. We really appreciated this as we'd had a very stressful time.
Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a wonderful spot and the staff was excellent.
Cons: It was a bit hard to find. GPS got us good and lost
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were bowled over by our experience of staying in this authentic 13th Monastery. It was absolutely amazing and we just couldn't take enough photos of the beautifully preserved monastery/convent seeped in history. The facilities are brilliant indoors with a beautiful communal lounge/sitting room with games of chess etc waiting for guests to challenge themselves - watched over by suits of armour and artefacts from bygone days wonderfully displayed for us all to enjoy. Every evening the huge open fire was lit & was so lovely cosy and welcoming to sit in front of after a day's touring & bird watching in the surrounding area which was a birdwatchers paradise! There was a selection of alcohol & soft drinks available in the sitting room bar for adding to the enjoyment. For swimmers there is an outdoor clean crystal clear swimming pool in beautiful surroundings too. The hotel is linked to the ruins of the monastery and has a real feel of peace and tranquillity. The breakfast was continental & delicious and tasty and had freshly squeezed oranges grown in the attached gardens. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and had great English. Thank you all so much! We'll be back!
Cons: Nothing - all wonderful!
7.5 Good
Pros: NIce place with history and very helpful people.
Cons: The dust and lack of cleanliness. This is a terrific place but you need to tolerate a less-than-clean room, the bed was very good though.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly reception and good guide and info of the place. Interesting house with artifacts collected by the owner. Surroundings very rural but actually not far from the main road. Good breakfast.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The owners created a wonderful combination of old charme, tranquility and hospitality. Bring a book and travel back in time and just relax... we’ll come back.

Cons: Reception was unprofessional. Access to the hotel from the street was poor. There were no street signs directing you to the hotel. The room was too small. 2.5 Mediocre
Pros: I like all things
Cons: Bed
6.8 Good
Pros: Location, the staff was nice, but they overcharged me, I believe by mistake. The room I stayed had A/C which is good considering it was a cold night.
Cons: I stayed in the 2-bed room upstairs with a friend. it was very small room, only with beds and not much more.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Located in an old house inside the city walls, and it does feel like I was entering somebody's (large) home. Seems like the owner went for the full old-school experience, from the wooden plank floors, to the kitchen appliances, to the beds. It was interesting to contrast this with the modern things from my previous location. Everything works as they should, the shower was good, as was the bed. There is even soap. shampoo, and towels provided, which I appreciated. Finally, Senhor Jose knows a lot about his city, and he gives lots of tip.
Cons: Call ahead of arrival, otherwise there might be no one at reception. It's usually not a big problem though since it only takes 5 minutes for Senhor Jose to travel from his home.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Excellent place with comfort.better than hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside is big surprise. The hostel is in a huge old traditional house and has an interesting selection of huge common rooms, and outdoor sitting areas. The dorm is nicely set up, spotless clean, and you get towels, soap and shampoo as well. There is an heather and a fan, so you will always be comfortable. Superb bathroom facilities. You get the feeling of staying in a shared appartment. Breakfast is included, and based on 'help yourself'any time. Staff helped me a lot to see what I wanted. There is an excellent cafe/ bar just outside the door, which is open until 2am. Fantastic spot to relax after a busy day wisiting Castelo de Verde and Marvao.
Cons: I pre-arranged arrival time, arrived spot on, but it was closed and nobody picked up the phone for a while.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staffs are very nice and helpful. Comfortable to stay and it's really neat and clean. Large kitchen and washroom with necessary facilities.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
6.8 Good
Pros: Room and kitchen was fantastic
Cons: Weather
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Superb location nearby the castle and most of the important venues in town. The hostel is this charming classic house with ample open spaces. Also the breakfast is excellent in a self-cattering style in which the guests can serve themselves whenever they need. It is a charming old house with very enthusiastic and helpful patrons.
Cons: The hostel is absolutely wonderful except for two minor details. Wi-fi can be a bit slow and the hot water for shower doesn't last very long (it takes a few minutes to get it warm, but then you must shower quickly because it will soon get cold again). These are, of course, minor problems comparing to how great the hostel is.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All thing I would like. Every thing is conform table
Cons: Nothing

Casadaloja - Portalegre - Bedroom
12
8.6 Excellent (71 reviews)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: First impression was not good as the living room, where our initial conversations with Rui took place, does not have natural light. However, the bedroom is a good size and has two large windows. The kitchen is small but has everything needed to knock up a good meal.
Cons: We arrived by taxi from the bus station and it was not obvious that we had reached our accommodation as there is no sign outside. Taxi driver confirmed with a neighbour we were at the correct address. We had to call Rui to obtain access to the property - he arrived after about 20 minutes and let us in. We couldn't get the TV to work.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Host is very friendly and helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The confort of the bedroom
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The apartment is a good place to sleep and stay in Portalegre for a couple of days. The apartment even has a washing machine free to use and a fully equipped kitchen. There are some bars nearby at the next street, so occasionally the sound at night may be a bit high, but only for for sensitive ears. There is an (old) functioning TV with Portugese channels only, a comfy couch and two seperate beds. The whole apartment was very very clean and the owner lives nearby if you have any trouble or need a cheap taxi service during your stay. The electric heating system will keep you warm at night. The owner is very welcoming.

Pros: Location was very cute, apartment is spacious and very clean + a heater and extra blankets provided if it gets cooler at night.
Cons: Hot water didn’t work during our stay but that was just a simple problem. Noise from the restaurant might be a problem for light sleepers but it was fine for us.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very clean flat right in the heart of the old town. Rui and his wife were awesome. Really appreciated having a decent heater in the room when it got down tho 2C.
Cons: It's quite dark and the layout's awkward

Pros: Fantastic place in the heart of Portalegre. I would definitely choose Mansao hotel again: friendly staff, clean room at affordable price. The room was cleaned every day.
Cons: The room was not so big and furniture was old fashion. However it had its charm, it matched well with the old building of Mansao hotel which is in the old town of Portalegre. Very nice place to visit!
7.5 Good
Pros: Clean rooms fresh rooms and responsible staffs!
Cons: Little far from centre.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I loved the quiet the most, beautiful silence at night! Very calm neighborhood to have a good night of rest and just a few minutes walking distance to restaurants, stores, castles / city center. The owner is extremely friendly and finding a parking spot is really easy.
Cons: Breakfast could be richer and include some more veggies, like tomatoes or lettuce. Having honey and lemon for tea would be 5*!

5.8 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Not 100% clean
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely big room and bathroom. Excellent location in the centre opposite the park.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The bedroom was great. I'm not a big fan of "vintage" decoration, however, the sheets were clean, there was a TV with many channels, ar conditioning working, coffee machine, bathroom amenities, hot water working perfectly. Just the door of the bathroom didn't close properly, but, since I was alone it wasn't an issue. Maybe they'd given me that room considering this.
Cons: The smell!!!!!! (and the breakfast) Luckily inside the room it was ok. But outside...it was horrible! The owners let their dogs wandering freely inside the hotel, like, 4 big dogs. They are cool, but the smell is horrible! If you want to let your pets around please, take extra care with the hygene. The other thing was the breakfast. First, I think that the dogs should not be allowed to go there, and second, nothing there were fresh. Furthermore, I went in the breakfast place at 7 pm and saw all the food there...already (and they don't serve dinner) even the fruit salad bowl was there, and in the morning, there was exactly the same amount of fuit salad, exactly in the same place.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The place has architectural character with a beautiful stairway and classic modernist details. Nice people, big friendly white dogs (Daisy, Blue and Finn), lovely cafetaria in the park across the street. And such a beautiful area for walking or just driving around. What a scenery!
Cons: Ah, it was noisy. Very sympathetic to have someone at the reception all night but I would have preferred not to hear the tv they were watching. And the rainforest shower was a bit too much - it threatened to flood the entire bathroom. The bed could have been longer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly , lovely atmosphere , spacious room with jacuzzi bath Very comfortable , lovely breakfasts Very nice decor We all look forward to visiting again.
Pensão São Pedro - Portalegre - Bedroom

5.1 Okay (39 reviews)
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: There was little to like, but a plus was the location. It was a walking-distance from a central garden, and it had a supermarket and some restaurants near it's location.
Cons: First, we were given the wrong room, and the staff explained that another customer who was supposed to have checked out, was still occupying our room and they couldn't do anything about it. Even though they explained the reasons for it, it's not my problem, as that was not what I booked. The room was worse than expected: the showerhead didn't work, neither did the TV; there was no plug to charge our mobiles; there was no soap and the bath towels had bugs on them. Also, the view and free wi-fi make no sense, as you have a window to the inside of the Pensão, and the wi-fi belongs to Nos (therefore not being free, as you need credentials). The kitchenette/shared space was bad as well: every single chair had spider webs on them and there were many spiders on the walls; it didn't have a door, but just a hole in the wall.
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Very creepy empty house. Lights not working, we ask for a double bed and get 2 separate ones. Very dirty everything and arogant staff.
