Sepilok Nature Resort - Sandakan - Building
1
9.3 Excellent (728 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Sepilok Nature Resort in Sandakan, you'll be a 2-minute walk from Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary and 6 minutes by foot from Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Sepilok Nature Resort was the first place we stayed at in Borneo. We received a beautiful welcome with a cold lemon drink on arrival and our bags were taken to our room. We had chalet no 4 which was perfect. The resort is so close to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. It takes about 5 minutes to walk there. It's great because you can walk back to the resort for some chill time in the air conditioning or for lunch. The setting of the resort is truly spectacular. Having dinner or drinks relaxing looking over the lake, with egg chairs and day beds was our favourite thing. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay there again.
Cons: I wish we could have stayed longer.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Proximity to the Orangutan Centre Good sized comfortable room Loved the comfortable hammocks Good value food
Cons: Some tours offered appeared a little expensive
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean and spacious lodges and so close to the bears and orangutans. Food at the restaurant is good value and tasty.
Cons: For the price maybe breakfast should be included.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great resort and location
7.5 Good
Pros: Close to the animal sanctuaries and rain forest, lovely setting and good food. 2 or 3 nights are perfect any more and it might get a little boring, beautiful none the less with lots of wildlife in a and around the site.
Cons: There are no stores near by with just one other restaurant near by if you fancy a change.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wow factor when you arrive. Lovely setting on the lake. Lovely decor. Gorgeous room, decorated really nice and fancy. Comfy beds. Close to the sanctuary.
Cons: The breaky menu could have been better
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful facilities, food, and staff
Cons: Amazing surroundings, a pool would of been nice in such hot weather, but overall great hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely Amazing stay! Location is brilliant for the Sunbear & the Orangutan rehabilitation centres. 2 nights was probably enough for our stay before heading off deeper into the jungle. The facilities are excellent. Very clean and spacious lodges. The staff are wonderful and couldn’t do enough to make our stay worthy of the 5 star rating. The food is also of a standard that we weren’t expecting. The food is presented in a very professional manner and all the dishes we ate were excellent. Couldn’t say more positive things about SNR!
Cons: Perfect!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: good breakfast and inexpensive location well right next door to several top attractions plus good service to other activities plus plus all the way
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the seating area in the lobby and the large quiet remote cabin we had by the lake
Cons: Nothing

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice place, good surroundings, cleaniness, hard working and nice staff.
Cons: Sepilok itself has not enough shops and you have to go to one of the fews restaurants near by. If you add that to the price of the cheapest accomodation u can find there (more expensive than any other town in Borneo so far), It males the whole orangutan experience not so cheap. Not everybody travel with huge budget... :(
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous setting, walking distance to all the Sepilok attractions, pristine cleanlineds and even the dorms are super quiet, lovely friendly staff - great stay!

Pros: All you can eat breakfast- eggs a little salty, but banging Mee goreng! Awesome Malaysian restaurant opposite the lodge for really cheap.

10.0 Excellent

Harbourside Backpackers - Hostel - Sandakan - Building
3
8.9 Excellent (280 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Harbourside Backpackers - Hostel in Sandakan, you'll be steps from Sandakan Harbour Mall and a 2-minute drive from Agnes Keith House. Featured amenities include a computer station, dry cleaning/laundry services, and luggage storage.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It was so clean. When I used the bathroom or toilet, maybe in a 5 minutes, staff cleaned again both of them. I really enjoyed it. Moreover location of the hostel is so centric. You can walk Agnes Keith house, English tea house and Sandakan museum and monuments. However it is far away from Sepilok (rainforest, sunbear and orang utan)
Cons: If you are tall and bulky, you can face some problems in the bathroom. It is little narrow but it should be designed probably for Malays and Asians. Also against the hostel, there is the biggest mall in the Sandakan, it is a bit of noisy.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location and staff were excellent.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Comfy living room
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I am pretty sure it's the best hostel in Sandakan. It's in the middle of everything, close to restaurants, shops, cinemas and the sea. The common áreas where great, the kitchen with all necessary to eat there, and a living area whit tv, computers, books. This is the only place with free Wi-Fi, and that should be improved with connection everywhere, from my point of view. The dorms are nice, clean and have air-con. The bunk beds a bit unstable if you happen to sleep on the upper one... Bathrooms and showers everywhere, and really clean all the time. Staff helpful and cheerful. Even when I made him wale up at 5.30am to open the main door!! Would come back if I go to Sandakan again.
Cons: I'd like them to hace free Wi-Fi un all areas. And to put more stable bunk beds.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice hostel with kitchen and living area. For breakfast you can make oats or an egg.
Cons: thin walls so you can hear everything around you.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, Staff is very kindly. Clean room
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Centraly located and value for money
Cons: None
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice breakfast (you can even fry your own egg). Perfect location close to the bay and many restaurants.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, super helpful and informative staff, good selection of DVDs available at the lounge, comfortable couches and desktop PC available for free
Cons: Linens and towels smelled like mothballs and the blanket wasn't very comfy
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location, very clean
Cons: We only had a very small bedsheet

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable Room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Strategic location & value for money
7.5 Good
Pros: The location was good for me, close to the memorial park. It was close to the main road with access to the local buses. Many restaurants in the area but no bars close by. The staff were friendly as were the locals who seemed happy to see an obvious foreigner staying in there area.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: reasonable rate of room
5.8 Okay
Pros: The place is cheap and we got water in the spacious room. We just used it as a one night stop over before we got a flight so it was fine for that
Cons: I wouldn’t recommend staying a long time as the location isn’t great, you need to get a Grab to go anywhere. It’s a little dirty
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Spacious room

Nature Lodge Kinabatangan - Sandakan - Bedroom
5
8.7 Excellent (77 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan in Kota Kinabatangan, you'll be 9.3 mi (15 km) from Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary and 20.3 mi (32.6 km) from Gomantong Caves. Featured amenities include a computer station, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and luggage storage. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours).
4.3 Okay
Pros: The rooms were clean and comfy.
Cons: Everything was included in the price. However the program was exactly the same no matter how long you stay. So we wanted to cancel the second day but unfortunately we couldnt. You also dont get to see many things during the tours. There is no network (not the lodge fault obviously) but it said it had wifi and it didnt, so it was a bit difficult to plan the rest of the trip from that point.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: This is unique as they completely organise everything from pick up to all meals and river cruising. Highly recommended, although didn’t see a lot of animals like we thought we would.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Transfers from and to Sandakan, all river cruises, night walking, breakfasts, lunches, dinners are included in booking price. AC fan very powerfull. Very helpful stuff
Cons: If you try choose between Kinabatangan and Danum no hesitation there. Danum was more than 4 times expensive, and 4 times less animals. Kinabatangan is difinitely worth of time and money
7.0 Good
Pros: We loved our boat guy Omar showing us all the animals on the river cruises.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It is located in the Borneo jungle alongside a river. The daily schedule is great as you get to do and see a lot. The guides were great at spotting and finding animals. The night walk was excellent. Food was pretty good too.
Cons: There is not a proper briefing about the jungle and it’s history and current state. This lack of an overall view is disappointing. There is a difference in guides. You are assigned to a specific guide. Ours was always late and we had the feeling he wanted to get the trip Over ASAP AT TIMES.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The room was basic but clean and comfortable with good air con. Ensuite was good with a roomy shower. The meals included were very tasty. The included tours were good fun and all the guides were great. All staff were friendly and helpful. We saw lots of wildlife including a wild orangutan. We enjoyed our stay and would happily return.
Cons: The airport transfer pick up process was a very long process. Drop off was much quicker.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The guides were so knowledgeable and could spot animals from so far away! The food was great and was a little different every day. I'm vegetarian and they even made me my own plate of tofu! Loved how everything was included so you didn't have to spend a penny apart from welly hire which was about £2 for the whole time you're there. All of the staff were very friendly. Air con in the dorm I was in was great and the beds were comfortable. Free tea and coffee was great!
Cons: Honestly nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice clean accommodation and well organised for all activities
Cons: Could have varied the meals a little.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Overall lovely staff, very comfy beds, good food and atmosphere.
Cons: The bathrooms didn't have toilet paper for over a day until I told the lady . They weren't particularly clean. Our guide barely took time during the night walks to try to spot any animals or insects. A bit longer would have been required to get to see more animals and insects.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Clean - Good food - Aj was a good tour guide during our stay - Staff friendly - Safe and fun
Cons: - Nothing

Cons: Nothing really. Came for work, would definitely come back for leisure.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was good
Cons: Doesn't seem clean. The chairs at the pool was covered in bird feces. Overall the hotel was old and not very well kept. Neither internet nor TV was working in our room.
6.8 Good

Cons: There was no eggs to order for breakfast. When i went in at 630 am, the staff appeared to be unhappy with me showing up early. The gym/towel boy was rude

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Some people might think 10 is a bit high and it even surprised me but this hostel is a great example of a simple but well-maintained hostel. Our room was decent size and the bed was comfortable and we had a view onto the main street (everything closes around 11). 24 hour 711 right underneath. Showers and toilets were clean and worked well and shower gel is provided. Gave us info on local attractions when we arrived. Free water and fruit, coffee, tea and toast.
Cons: The curtains didn't fit the windows :) That's it! A great stay.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: It was a super pleasant stay. Kevin, the owner, is very nice and cares for his guests.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and nice. Free breakfast with oat, toasts and fresh fruits. And of course coffe and tea.
7.5 Good
Pros: Welcoming staff and clean bedroom. Breakfast was a nice touch. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and the pillows pretty hard which was a bit uncomfortable but other than that it was an ideal place to base yourself in Sandakan.

Pros: Good location, lovely staff, perfectly comfortable and good value.
Cons: The showers have very poor pressure
10.0 Excellent

8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was really nice Breakfast was good - fresh fruit, eggs your way, delicious banana bread and more. The pool was nice after a hot and sweaty day. Beautiful surroundings Restaurant served good food Close to the rehabilitation center
Cons: There was only a fan and not ac in our dorm room. Would have liked a normal lock on our door.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: we enjoyed our stay there, everything is perfect. i recommend this place if you come to sepilok area, food is great (tried the food in a fancier restaurant nearby, i was glad we picked forest edge resort) , friendly and qualified staff, room was clean& spacious too.
Cons: may be a little bit bigger plunch pool haha and stronger internet connection so we can access it from the rooms. when we were there internet was only in the restaurant area.
7.5 Good
Pros: I loved the location - edge of the jungle and lots of wonderful wildlife around. We also loved the food - good vegetarian selection! The staff at the bar were lovely and the vibe was so nice.
Cons: Our shower didn’t work in the room and I wasn’t brave enough to use the outside shower as there was too many cobwebs (it’s a jungle resort so I understand this). Also an animal had pooped on our bed and I was a bit frightened wondering where it was in the room! This wouldn’t bother others who are not as nervous as me.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect rain forest stay. Wonderful staff and fantastic restaurant.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff. The resort has an emphasis on sustainability.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so fantastic, so friendly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An ideal place to stay if you want a location close to the Sepilok Reserve and Rain Forest Discovery Centre. The big lodge is a great place to stay if you are a family. 2 separate rooms in one lodge.
Cons: Can't say anything was dad about the place.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location and being at one with nature!
Cons: Bit pushy in the restaurant, as they kept asking if you want more drinks, food etc. Didn't feel like you could just relax with a coffee and book. Quite pricey, but food was very good.

Pros: Amazing relaxed location in the jungle. Family owners exceptionally friendly and helpful. They arranged transport to the Sepilok Orangutans, Sunbears and Proboscis Monkey Sanctuarys, Rainforest Discovery Centre and Kinabatangan river trip. Accommodation very clean and comfortable. Food very good. Great value for money. Wished we could have stay longer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly staff who know everything about the area. I originally thought this might be too far but they provide a free shuttle/ organise all your transport and bookings for you! Food was also delicious and so cheap! Would definitely recommend!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff, tofu vegetable curry on an evening, the outdoor bathroom, the hammocks, the free shuttle bus and setting and location were all amazing. Staff also helped arrange a 1N2D Kinabatangan River tour which was cheaper than what we’d seen online. This was our favourite place we stayed while we were travelling for three weeks, such a great experience.
Cons: Nothing really. If you don’t like bugs and creepy crawlies you’re gonna to suffer a bit but that’s the very nature of being in the Bornean jungle!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Exactly what we wanted - a quiet lodge in the middle of the rainforest. The lady at reception was very helpful, and we used the shuttle bus to the orangutan sanctuary.
Cons: It's very basic...which we expected, so just be prepared!!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely location set back in the forest just a few minutes from the Sepilok Orang Utan centre, the rainforest discovery centre and the sun bear centre. Free shuttle to the orang utan and sun bear centre. Good food.
6.3 Good
Pros: Jungle location. Daily shuttle to Orang utan and sun bear centres. Free basic breakfast . Sun loungers overlooking jungle very nice.
Cons: WiFi terrible. Difficult to get grab out of centre. So captive audience pricing. Onsite food not great value for money. Can’t pay as you go for services so everything settled at checkout. Except for daily fee shuttles, arranged transportation is way overpriced. Mostly used by British school trip groups so atmosphere can be silly and unrelaxing at times.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Room view waking up to natue Daily specials super cheap
Cons: Awful wifi Noise from ndn
7.0 Good
Pros: Cozy and clean rooms, beautiful view from the balcony.
Cons: Restaurant area needs a bit love - it looks a bit untidy. Stuff member sometimes could be more friendly.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful view from the room, so peaceful watching over the rainforest. No wifi in the rooms but mobile data works great most of the time. Free shuttle to the orangutan etc. and Grab also works in the area so it's easy to visit places. I don't think it's worth it taking luxury room, just seemed to have more beds, not actually better if you're only 2 people.
Cons: Breakfast is pretty boring but better than lots of places (eggs, american sausages, toast, little bit of fruit and tea/ coffee)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Bed was very good and clean. Staff very nice and shuttle to sepilok included and easy. We also did the fireflies excursion what was a good thing to do in the afternoon we arrived
Cons: Don't come in July if you want a relaxed stay. It was full with groups of teenagers on Sumer trip with their teachers, they got all hammocks :( Bench in the small room balcony was not very comfortable

7.5 Good
Pros: Staff were excellent. This the good place to escape from busy city!
Cons: Food bit pricey!!
6.3 Good
Pros: Great pool and place to relax
Cons: For the price we expected a bit better especially as it was called superior or deluxe rooms.. The Aircon in our room barely worked, it was ridiculously noisy so we couldn't sleep, the room was hot, dark and smelt damp. Horrible foam mattresses with big dip in the middle. The whole place needs a good spruce up. The toilets and changing rooms at the pool looked like they hadn't been cleaned for a very long time.

Cons: Sandakan is an awful dump. If you're only here for the wildlife (like most people), go and stay in Sepilok, where there are plenty of nicer places than this, full of people not just there to Instagram themselves at the infinity pool.

Cons: room light controller not working properly. One cockroach in bathroom. Rooms are clean but poor maintenance like everywhere else for shower set, faucet, drying string installed inverted, or wooden furniture which should be revarnished. They should hire better rooms manager to follow. For internet , we stayed 2 times, it was very good 1st time and 2nd time it kept bounding all the time.
