I especially enjoyed the free walk. It was on my first day and I met quite a few people I connected with over the next few days. It provided a great orientation to the area around the hostel. I also enjoyed my four-woman dorm accommodation. My roommates were quiet, friendly and thoughtful. I loved the location. It was close to public transportation, there was a convenience store opposite and plenty of nearby restaurants. I was looking forward to the biking the bridge tour, but it was cancelled because of rain. It turned out well because I biked the bridge independently with another woman from the hostel on a beautiful sunny day. We asked for the hostel discount at Blazing Saddles and paid $18 instead of $32. The dorm was warm, but thankfully we had a room facing the street and could open the window. The price is likely competitive for San Francisco, but with the exchange rate of USD to Canadian Dollars, paying $92.46 CAD isn't good value for one night in a hostel dorm.
The facilities were nice and clean and the staff was always helpful
great location, nice and helpful staff a bit noisy and messy in the pit, room not clean enough, too many people sharing bathrooms.
The thing I like the most about this hostel is the price. Too cold, thin blanket
Location is great, overall quality is good the beds are not quite comfortable. It would be better to have a free locker in the room. Currently the locker is provided, but extra money is required to purchase a lock...
good location free wifi security is good because person has card only enter hostel and own room room is dirty There are little cockroaches in the kitchen.
FIRST DORM ASSIGNED TO ME AT CHECK-IN WAS EXCELLENT!! STAFF WAS VERY HELPFUL AT TIME OF ARRIVAL. AFTER WORKING NIGHT BASEBALL GAME I ARRIVED BACK HOSTEL AROUND 11:P.M. FOUND I HAD BEEN GIVEN UPPER BUNK,MADE RESERVATION WEEK IN ADVANCE REQUESTING LOWER BUNK,AND AFTER ENTERING DORM FOUND NO LADDER FOR USE TO GET UPPER BED!!!!!ASKED NIGHT MANAGEMENT FOR LADDER SO I COULD GET SOME SLEEP AS WAS VERY TIRED THEY DECIDED TO RELOCATE ME TO DIFFERENT DORM WHICH WAS DOWN HALLWAY IN CORNER,AN OVER-FLOW ROOM. UPON ENTERING FOUND THAT STILL NEEDED TO CLIMB LADDER TO UPPER BUNK!!! WHY THE SWITCH???? LADDER SWUNG OUT FROM BUNK AND WAS NOT CLOSE TO BEING SECURE!! UPON TRYING TO CLIMB DOWN LADDER IN A.M. I ACTUALLY FELL OFF LADDER AND LUCKILY WAS NO HURT VERY BAD!!!!!!FURTHERMORE RESERVATION WAS MADE AT 9:A.M. DO NOT THINK I WILL EVER STAY THERE AGAIN!!
It was close to very good public transport and Union square and Chinatown. The hostel offered quite a bit tours and maps. Breakfast is uncluded and other services like internet or telephone, for a small price in case you don't have a laptop for the free wifi. Not very clean on the borders of the bath, but for such a low price, it was really not bad!
Location, price and breakfest
The kichen in the under ground floor
Good location and price.
I met some cool people at the Amsterdam Hostel, including the guests and staff.
Good position. Free lockers in the rooms. Room not very clean. It was not possible to keep the window open. There are lokers in the rooms, but the hostel don't provide locks. The wireless worked well only the first out of three days. The light in the toilet was flashing, they didn't repair it even after I reported the problem.
Breakfast Had to change the room every day
The room is very comfortable and the location and transport is very nice. I loved it. Thank You for everything. The bed is too high, extremely high!!!!!!!!! I slept afraid to fall down on the ground!!! And there is not stairs!!! Please could you solve this.
the location is near to cable car, but in the dark it' not really safe. the bath and toilet is not in the room, but clean
The low price, of course! Really a pretty good value--very close access to everything, pretty quiet and easy to sleep, and the hallway bathrooms were remarkably clean! The area can be a bit sketchy late at night, so just be aware of surroundings. And I am not too crazy about the whole "bathhouse style" of towel exchange. Would much rather have a couple nice bath and hand towels in the room to start and go from there. Could also use a few more hooks and hangers in the rooms.
Although this hotel was not far from the main Downtown area, it was not in an area that I would advise others to stay in. The room itself was not clean or spacious; it had a continual beeping from the smoke alarm which we were told could not be fixed. Frankly we felt unsafe and threatened in the short time we spent at the hotel - we moved out before even spending a night there.
The staff is nice, and the price includes breakfast. The room was tiny, the area must be one of the worst in San Francisco. They charged mt debit card with an extra 50 dollars as depisir and I have to wait 3 days to get it back (if I get it back in the end). We parked in the next street, and when I went for the car in the morning, someone was looking into it. My friend saw that policeman were in a shop where blood was on the floor. Avoid this area.
Near the center city Located in a noisy quarter and badly frequented.
cheap need to put at least 4 bathroom/ shower . I noticed that there was only 2 shower room in each floor.
nothing I have stayed 6 days. Nobody cleaned the room. But staf are friendly..
Friendly staff. Great location at walking distance of Powell station. I didn't know bathroom was shared, I found out once there. No house keeping, you have to take care of your bedroom.
The position is 400 meters away from the center of San Francisco (Powel and Market st). The area is not so beatifull... If you are 2 or more guys there's non problem, but if you are one of two girls is not good for you to come back in the Hotel in the dark... The name is Pontiac Hotel, but I think that is better to call it an hostel. The room is not so big and the bed is not for 2 people, but for one ad a half. The towels and the bed is never been changed in the 5 days in witch we stayed there. The continental breakfast is only some muffins and fruit with a coffee.
The staff was very nice, very helpful; I get the feeling this is a family owned and run place, and that they keep an eye on things. Hall bathrooms and showers were kept very clean. While it is a very close in and convenient location to things, it is a little sketchy after dark. Be advised to stay aware of your surroundings. It is older and not fancy, so very popular witht the younger and international crowd because of the low cost. Not really a bad thing, though.
rooms were decent. considering the area, it felt safe. Staff was friendly - nice people all of them. Location: There's a drug needle exchange across the street! Lots of homeless people all over the area. Loud screaming partying people could be heard from 6 - 9 pm every day!! No air conditioning. I stayed 5 nights, they don't clean the rooms! It's a budget room.
Lot's of young people speaking many languages, friendly staff. Limited toilet and shower facilities.
It was awesome! I stayed here for two nights after my lodging for a conference was over. I stayed to explore the city and I loved staying at this hostel. The staff was very friendly. The kitchen had a stove, fridge, and microwave.
Only price matters No AC facility if we ask they will ask us open windows and sleep. In the Bay Area we know how windy it is.bathrooms are not maintained well and it shared bathrooms. I was not able to more than 1 hour I paid the that rent and left the hotel.
The location was perfect. It is in the middle of the SF and everywhere important is just away in walking distance. The bed was really uncomfortable. They need to change those iron bunk beds with the wooden ones. And by the way, please put one more chair!
Very clean, easy checkin, good wifi Had to leave the window open because the room was a bit stuffy, whcihbmeant it was really noisy. Sharing a toilet was fine, dunno about the shower room -but we didn't need that anyway.
In-room Microwave, refrigerator, table No coffee machine or hot waterSmell weird in the beginningThe towels and curtains are not clean
I liked going to sleep, so I could forget about where I was until I woke up. The hotel was surrounded by bums. The odor of the hotel was awful curry opening the window presented a urine odor from the alley The bed had springs that drove into your back or side,The walls were paper thin. I had to go home and shower after this stay
Great location. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms were very basic.
To start the homeless sleep outside the so called "hotel". Pretty sure I witness a drug deal while walking to the hotel. Also the hotel didn't seem like one. It was more like a big house and the renters might leave there with smaller children. No parking included!!
Many interesting restaurants in the area. The room was 'clean' but smelled very bad of old, musty and food. I was traveling alone and did not feel safe in the neighborhood at night.
Value, staff The neighborhood, no way to adjust the temp in the room
You're getting what you pay for. The owner, and potentially only staff member is why this place gets a two. He is an old school Italian born and raised in the house of hard knocks of New England. Really talkative and down to earth, but if you do him wrong, he will rip you a new one. I don't know if I obtained a steal, but I paid $50 for a private room on the Monday following the city's pride parade. This isn't the fault of the establishment, but the location is not good. It's located near the BART station in the Tenderloin district. If you're not familiar with the city, this is ground zero for the bay area's homeless. No HVAC in the room, which can be a big issue if it's a really cold or hot day. The facilities were the bare minimums. The overall cleanliness definitely could've been better.
