Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Cons: "Delayed missed connection arrived many hours late"
Pros: "Knowing that the pilot takes out safety seriously is to be commended. Thank you"
Cons: "Not have a breakdown would be nice but I know that breakdowns are unexpected and it’s better to be safe than sorry with our safety. So thank you"
Pros: "Easy boarding"
Cons: "Not as friendly as I hoped"
Cons: "American isn’t my preferred airline for obvious reasons (delays, notoriously bad service, old planes, and a lack of amenities like WiFi and tv’s), but now I’ll never spend my money with them again. They took me off an already delayed flight after I’d already boarded to examine my smart bag. I know that lithium batteries can’t be taken in the underbelly of the plane and I knew my bag would likely be checked at the gate (why I removed the battery and left it at home in the first place). When they asked me if I had a lithium battery in my bag I said “no.” They then gate checked the bag and allowed me on the plane. After everyone had been boarded (half an hour after we’d been scheduled to take off) they then called my name out on the speaker. I had to then de-board the plane and re-explain to staff that there was no lithium battery in my bag. The staff didn’t believe me citing the infallible logic: “there are ports so there’s a battery.” I told them again and again that the battery had been removed and the charging ports—while there—were inert as they weren’t attached to the battery. STILL, I had to remove all of my clothes from the bag, and open every single compartment (of which there were many) for them to allow me to get back onto the plane. They were telling me that they might have to “rebook the flight” if my bag couldn’t get on. I don’t think I need to explain how agitated/terrified that made me."
Pros: "Crew were very helpful"
Cons: "I have an injury so I paid extra for 'extra leg room" but there's a wall between economy and business class so very little legroom. My leg was hurting a lot and the flight attendants had to find me a different seat because I could not stay there for 5 hours. I wouldn't have paid extra for this seat."
Pros: "Very nice crew today! On time to depart and arrive."
Cons: "WiFi entertainment not working"
Pros: "Left on time. Crew polite. Boarding and exiting done quickly and efficiently."

Pros: "Everything except the food."
Cons: "A four hour flight departing at 5pm SHOULD HAVE SOME EATABLE FOOD!!!! I am sick to death of going hungry on these flights because there is nothing I can eat on board."
Cons: "I was asked to change seats. Glad I didn’t pay extra for my seat. All flights should include WiFi, and or entertainment, and better snack options. Flights out of and to Burlington are very expensive!"
Pros: "Great movies and food"

Cons: "Delayed for almost an hour because of maintenance issues. Then had to wait over an hour to get our bags at the carousel. Mind you this is after arriving at midnight. Didn't leave the airport till after 1am!"
Cons: "Couldn't take it due to delay, delay, cancel at RDU"
Pros: "The crew made up for almost of the terrible things about the flight."
Cons: "The outdated plane had no plug in capability. No Gogo or individual in flight entertainment. The food was most inedible, the vegetarian snack was a hard baguette with old sliced tomatoes and wilted lettuce. I couldn’t eat most of what was served because it was so terrible."
Pros: "Overall smooth. No delays. No major roadblocks."
Cons: "There was some type of leak above my seat that would periodically drip on me."
Pros: "We didn’t crash, so that’s a plus."
Cons: "Boarded early despite known mech issue. Delayed almost 2 hours. Hottest aircraft I’ve ever been on. All the passengers were sweating and complaining. Absolutely a terrible experience."

Pros: "great stable flight"

Pros: "Good food & movies."
Pros: "Quick flight, no pressure issues in flight."
Cons: "There were two delays."

Pros: "Flight staff was friendly"
Cons: "We were delayed 30-35 minutes due to a broken tray table, after we had already boarded."
Pros: "The sweet flight attendant on our flight was the only good thing about our experience."
Cons: "Flight of stairs to the shuttle and no working elevator"
Pros: "Pilot was very communicative, which was great but plane was 1 hour late and we had a mechanical problem while taxing, pilots fixed it while still on the ground. Not their fault those planes are 35 years old, come on!"
Cons: "Stop flying MD80's, please! 35 year old planes!"
Pros: "Staff for the airline was very good!"
Cons: "I had to check a second bag on my return. I entered Mexico with a skateboard carry on. When I went to leave, the airport would let me pass through with it. I was forced to check a second bag and it really bothered me."
Pros: "Swift boarding."
Cons: "As hot and humid as Mar-a-lago under investigation by the DOJ in August."
Pros: "We were delayed out of Tokyo and missed our connector into Tampa but the airline did a stellar job of being here at the gate with our new flight and boarding passes and also Did a great job makeing sure our luggage arrived in Tampa."
Cons: "Plane going over much better. Had better tv screens charging ports and seemed more comfortable. We were delayed 4 hours out of Tokyo but I know that just happens when you travel sometimes"
Cons: "As I boarded the plane, they were trying to get me to check my carry on item when my bag fit the dimensions. It clearly fit in the luggage sizer, but the representative was quick to want to take my bag."
Pros: "That we amazingly finally made it to Rome."
Cons: "Almost everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Literally, every plane we were supposed to fly on had something wrong with it. We were delayed for hours, missed a connecting flight, had to take another flight which was delayed even longer, they had to find another plane entirely because something was wrong with THAT one. Once we finally got on the plane, we sat on the runway for an hour because there was some kind of TSA-related issue (awesome) and then the airport wouldn't let any planes take off inexplicably. We got to our destination 12 hours later than we were supposed to. But to make up for it, American gave us $10 food vouchers to use in the airport in the middle of the night..."
Pros: "same as above"
Pros: "The flight attendants were great. I was also surprised that they gave out pretzels and soda for free. Other airlines advertise cheaper flight but nickel and dime you to death. The plane was very clean"
Pros: "Friendly staff, clean plane, and comfortable seats"
Pros: "Frequent flight updates"
Cons: "Could not hear gate instructions when standing in hallway."
Cons: "last minute seat change to front of eco cabin (no foot room or small bag allowed)"
Cons: "1st off I was told a different gate then where I needed to be. By a lucky chance I found the correct gate on my own. Then we loaded the plane and taxied our only to come back to the terminal due to an alarm and sat at the terminal for an hour and they never turned the air conditioning back on. Lastly the seats were stuck in the upright posiRion the entire flight. And the attendants walked by me with food but never attempted to actually offer it to me."
Cons: "This comment is to explain my disappointment with both British Airways and American Airlines. I purchased three plane tickets via Kayak to fly on British Airways to Rome, Italy on July 14, 2016. I discovered that my trip going to Rome would be operated by American Airlines. I have flown American Airlines on a number of occasions (nationally and internationally), so I did not believe it would present a problem. I was sorely mistaken. My scheduled flight from DCA to JFK was delayed for an hour due the airplane's malfunction. My family and I were trapped on the airplane on the runway along with countless others. I thought this would be the end of the airplane ordeal, but again I was sorely mistaken. When we arrived to JFK, an hour later than expected, we were informed to go to Gate 47 for boarding. I checked on the status of the plane via American Airlines website. I discovered that the gate was changed, AGAIN, to a different location (Gate 14). For this trip I received over a dozen e-mails with gate change information. For ONE trip. I went to the American Airlines Counter to confirm whether the gate changed to 14. Your own personnel was not even aware of the change until I informed him. He originally said it did not change, but after I stated that the gate changed on the website he checked his computer system and made an announcement to passengers that the gate changed to 14. This is unprofessional. Your employees who are paid to work at the American Airlines counter should be aware of all status changes for flights. It gets better. Note my sarcasm. The flight gets delayed for six. To put it into perspective, my family and I were at the airport from at least 2:30pm until 10pm. This is utterly unacceptable. I traveled with my senior citizen parents. There are hardly any meal options for passengers with dietary restrictions to consume at Terminal 8 for JFK. While it was the least American Airlines could do by supplying healthy snacks for the passengers, a banana or orange does NOT replace or make for an actual dinner. Additionally, there was no announcement made about the snacks the first time. Only the second time. Next, American Airlines changed the gate location AGAIN, but to gate 8. Further adding insult to injury, the flight was delayed. My family and I are scheduled for a tour that is dependent on this flight arriving on time. Any further delay will bring about additional unexpected costs in Italy to make-up for the fact we arrived late. American Airlines is supposed to be a premier airline, but after today's experience I surely cannot see myself being a passenger for this airline ever again. Along the same token, since British Airways contracted American Airlines, this company also holds equal culpability."
