Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of the United Kingdom

  • Most flights to Portugal fly to either Faro (for a seaside retreat) or Lisbon (to tour the city). Lisbon Airport (LIS) is the main international airport in Portugal, and this is the airport to fly into if you are looking to explore central Portugal. Faro airport (FAO) serves the southern coast of Portugal and the area with beautiful beaches and resorts known as the Algarve. You can reach the north of Portugal by flying into Porto airport (OPO), and many budget flights to Portugal land here.
  • For a less conventional holiday in Portugal, consider Madeira. The island is served by Madeira Airport (FNC), which is an international airport and has direct flights to and from Europe.
  • If a connection asks you to go from Lisbon terminal 1 to terminal 2, you should be careful with the stopover time. This means that you will have to go through security, pick up your bags and then catch bus to the other terminal, so ensure that there is ample stopover time. You may prefer to choose a connecting flight with the same airline or alliance, so that if you are delayed and miss your flight, you can book the next available flight.
  • In Portuguese airports, passport control is usually after the duty-free lounge and can take some time, so when departing from Portugal, ensure that you have plenty of time to clear passport control after duty-free shopping to avoid missing your flight. Budget carriers can also have long lines during peak season, so you may want to arrive at the airport earlier.
  • As a British citizen, you do not need a visa for short stays in Portugal. You do not need additional passport validity beyond your stay in Portugal. It may be worth checking the government website for up-to-date information on travel to the European Union.
  • If you are booking a romantic getaway and want to find cheap flights to Portugal, book a flight to the Algarve. The area boasts eternal golden beaches, scenic coastlines, spectacular sunsets and precious olde worlde fishing villages making it one of the most romantic destinations in Europe. To get to the area you'll need to catch an international flight to Faro Airport (FAO).
  • For young travellers going to Portugal looking to have a wild adventure, and experience the freedom of Fado, Bacalhau and local Douro Port while dancing the night away, then Coimbra is the best region for you to visit. To access this bustling university town that never sleeps you'll need to fly into Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), and take a bus to make the hour trip into town.
  • If you are exploring all of Portugal and feel like you must jam-pack as many sights as you can into one trip, you can save a few hours by flying between Faro and Porto. You will also find flights between Lisbon and Porto but getting to and from the airport usually takes time due to heavy traffic in Lisbon, and airport checks can take a long time, so you'd be better off with public transport in that case.

The business class seats were smaller and closer together than other airlines.

Boarding- Good Seat Comfort - OK Crew - Good Food - Mediocre On Time - Very Good

Didn't like much. Wheelchair assistance was almost nonexistent. No one at TAP check in process helpful. On the plane, stewards were not friendly and disorganized. Food was terrible for 8 hr flight. We were skipped at snack time and even though we tried to get attention using overhead call system no one even looked up at us to acknowledge. Being at the back of first section and by the lavatory we only were able to request when they came to pick up everyone else's garbage and they were nonchalant...no apology or even choice. The 1/2 half bread with slice of cheese was a waste. Deplaning was horrible but I'll blame lisbon airport for that. Plane left late at made good time still arrived about 15 behind schedule and for using remote deplaning and bus to terminal took another 20 min to gate. Those with connections were highly stressed. Took us 2 hrs from landing to get to ground transportation and exit airport. And that was with wheelchair assistance.

Bad boarding, threat to force bag check mid journey, lines, late, buses, more waiting awful end to end.

Check in was excellent thanks to the team at the check in counter. I was disappointed to see that one has to pay for coffee on the flight. This is the first time I have seen that after 60 years of flying.

Our steward Margarida who served us from Lisbon to Boston was absolutely fantastic! She deserves a raise. Conscientious and thorough as well as showing appropriate attention for every need.

An old airplane with very uncomfortable seats in the Comfort “class! Small, narrow, and hard seat. Entertainment options are inferior, old movies. Boarding started at the back of the airplane, as we entered the aircraft last instead of after business class, risking the possibility that the comfort section would not have room for carry-on in the overhead bin. The food was ok. White wine was terrible. Overall, the flight felt worse than cheap airliners, and the price was as high as premium carriers.

I will avoid TAP if I can, the ground experience was very poor with bad behaviour from the ground crew and it was only a bit better on the aircraft.

I had a business class ticket from EWR to Madrid with a layover at LIS for 11 hours. It was obvious that I needed to pick up my luggage in Lisbon for 11 hours and check it in again when boarding the second flight to Madrid. Before buying the ticket, I called TAP customer service. Customer service assured me that I could get my luggage in Lisbon. When I arrived at Newark airport, I immediately asked to check my luggage to Lisbon. However, the TAP employee refused me, saying that I should resolve this issue upon arrival in Lisbon. She checked my luggage to Madrid. I asked the TAP employee at the gate to help me when boarding the plane, I asked the flight attendants manager on board the plane to help me. All the employees refused to help me and said that I should resolve this issue in Lisbon. It took me 4 hours to resolve this issue in Lisbon. I arrived at 11am and they didn't give me my luggage until 3pm. As a result, I was so tired after a sleepless night on the plane and 4 hours on my feet at the airport and all my plans were ruined that I couldn't fly to Madrid. It was a terrible experiance,

Nice to fly out of Orly smaller easier to navigate airport. Being able to receive boarding pass well in advance of trip was comforting to know all travel was in order.

Liked. The check-in was pretty quick as they had 5 desks working.

Generally a good experience except for boarding in Naples on the flight back to London. We were all standing around for at least 20 minutes maybe longer as there was no seating.

Seats, WC,sizes for today's generation adults, and if technical problems arise a complimentary coffee, water nice for waiting one hours, the rest is perfect (pilot and cabin crew)

Boarding was smooth and quick. Flight departed on time. Equally evacuation upon landing was from both the front door and the back doors. Bags were on the conveyor belts before I got there. Excellent service.

The terminals are far away, be prepared to walk. Also, You climb stairs to the plane since there are no aero bridges. Boarding was haphazard not in multiple groups, so stand in line early. Hard to find place to stow cabin baggage if you are behind in the line. You can purchase food on the plane. There are vegetarian options.

First -the flight was late - more than two hours Second, not even a bottle of water at bord to give for free for this inconvenience. Three-at landing ive realised that I've lost one of my ear plug headphones and been very desperate to find it with my torch, the crew not helped at all more than that they asked to leave the plane as everyone did before me. This was the last flight from that day- extra 5 min for me with a bit of help from crew - would have bring a super review. I guess this days humanity disappeared!

I got caught using a stolen credit card number. Michelle Siziba is my name Nice to London Gatwick on 7/31/25.

Not happy with price of luggage or that we had no choice but to pay whether cabin or hold. I didn't book seats but this is unnecessary extra money along with suitcase

We accidentally purchased twice the bags we needed. Our fault, but the ticket was not clear to us, and it asked us to purchase bags at checkin. When we notified them to get credit back at the airport, they said to contact customer service. We flew the flight and then contracted customer service. They said no credits after the flight has flown. Not customer service oriented at all. They know we didn’t check that many bags and kept our money for a service they did not provide. Be aware and very careful of what you are purchasing from them because they will not make it right if there is an error.

Take off was great but landing is always with a bump.

Flight was delayed by 1 hour 45 minutes. Aircraft was cramped, dirty and uncomfortable. Boarding staff more interested in charging you for oversize baggage than getting you on board. Overall not a pleasant experience.

I didn't know that all connecting flights require online check-in two hours in advance, so I was fined 55 euros. This is a lesson learned.

A delay of almost 3 hours. It was evident that the staff wanted us to board urgently, to the point of rudeness, to avoid paying compensation

There isn’t any entertainment. The food and drink was available for a price. I didn’t buy any.

It would be nice to have power to charge phone.

They boarded us but somehow did not manage to record us boarding, so rather than check if we were onboard they removed our bags from the aircraft. I got a call from Ryanair staff in Dublin when I landed in Madiera asking me where I was!!! When I said I was in Madiera I was told what had happened. Our bags were to be sent to Madiera the next day via Manchester, they didn’t arrive. They are now due to arrive two days before we leave. I don’t see myself using Ryanair again unless I am forced to and even then I may just refuse.

It's not the staff's fault. The cabin crew do their best but the setup in Stansted Airport by Ryanair is poor. The herding of people like cattle is unacceptable before boarding and is something that's in every airport but only in Stansted have I seen the queueing of passengers outside the plane on the tarmac and the crew only turning up with maybe 5 minutes to depart. This is a resource issue . Yes prices are good but seemingly comes with a price of poor treatment of customers. I'll pay more next time

On time arrival but the aircraft had seen better days and needed a deep clean.

It was appalling, full of young people who were drunk and disobeying instructions to sit down. Crew did nothing to enforce. There was a Ryanair pilot sitting in the aisle opposite me who talked through out the safety briefing so loudly I couldn’t hear. Whole thing felt unsafe

Crew service was poor and very little difference between premium economy and economy. Disappointed.

My bags never made it on the flight and I now have to wait for them to arrive hopefully tomorrow. You can’t even track your bags in the app to see where they are since they didn’t arrive. You have to file a claim and then wait for them to inform you when you will receive your bag. We were already delayed for an hour due to baggage so I don’t understand how my bag didn’t make the flight.

One of the worst experience given the middle seat even asked for the change no one honored, boarded at the end and overall one of the worst experience

No WiFi in either flight. No leg room, the seat in front of me left dents on my knees and the tray was so low my knees propped it up if I tried to use it.

No WiFi working on either flight. No leg room at all, the seat in front of me left dents in my knees. If I put the tray down, it was so low it was propped up by my knees. (I’m only 182.9 cm) I’m usually cool on planes, but the planes were both hot during taxi and take-off.

Very bad.i will never book British flights for future

It was good although our flight to the UK was cancelled and rescheduled for two days later. This was after we were already seated on the plane. We missed the first leg of our trip. BA did put us up at a hotel and paid for our meals but we lost our hotel costs in Glasgow.

The crew was very nice and pleasant. We were very reluctant to book our flight with British Airlines because we had bad experience with their flight attendants on the previous trips, they were rude and not helpful.

I am a 25+ years American Airlines member. British Airways is simply above and beyond in every customer satisfaction category.

The seat pads are past there sell by date now and are uncomfotable. Also, with screens in the back of the seat, the seats shouldnt be able to recline as this puts rhe screen in your face.

Great crew. Seats do not recline :( but it is budget so i should have known. Otherwise comfy leather chair. Slight slim chair but again budget so expected. No entertainment do makes journey boring. Recommend packing plenty of snacks and games or download plenty of films and music in your device. Staff excellent. Clean flight. On time.

Both of my flights had issues with their time slot with air traffic control, so they left over an hour late and the flight back to London was delayed by over an hour. Please provide more clarity about baggage requirements on booking sites, your website and within the app. I had to pay for extra bags at the airport when departing London, because they didn’t specify that your carry on bag can only be a backpack and not a trolley, my trolley bag fit the size requirements of the backpack but still I was made to pay

The crew at Check-in was very helpful. It’s was appreciate.

It’s a budget airline. You get what you pay for. They insisted on getting us out of the gate and into our slot on time. They got us to the destination safely. Aircraft was clean and well maintained. What more could we want

Half an hour delay. Squeezed into a small Departure Lounge with very few seats. Noisy flight with screaming unruly kids. Loud IPads and Phones. Heaven!

Were delayed in the airport for 5 hours with no explanation. Flight kept getting delayed by an hour at a time and wizz air staff were no where to be found

The flight was delayed 5 hours and I'm and invalid,I wan a refund for this

The cabin crew on that flight were super fantastic and super helpful. They were so polite and considerate that i felt i travelled with a 5star airline.

Delayed delayed delayed - always with Wizzair. Staff were friendly and well mannered but clearly the company is unorganized and the aircrafts are outdated.

It's a budget airline. Great for short flight. Smooth landing.
