KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Cozumel
As the city is not known for having an extensive public transportation system, car rentals in Cozumel are a great way to get around and see all the sights, including Punta Sur Beach and the Zona Arqueológica San Gervasio. Having access to your own vehicle will also make it easy for you to head to attractions that are removed from the city center, such as Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, an area known for having great swimming and suntanning opportunities.
If you’re hoping to reserve Cozumel car rentals for the duration of your stay, you can always choose to do so at Cozumel International Airport. The car rental center is conveniently located just outside of the Arrivals Terminal, and is within walking distance, meaning that you do not need to worry about taking a taxi or shuttle to get here. At the center, you’ll find that there are several different companies to choose from, including Alamo, Avis, and Hertz.
Cozumel can be difficult to navigate, especially in more remote parts of the city, and the roads are quite narrow and winding. To make it easier for you to travel around without getting lost, consider adding a GPS to your car rentals in Cozumel. The city also has quite a few pedestrians and cyclists, particularly in areas that are located along the coast. Make sure to pay particular caution when driving to avoid getting into a collision.
Both summer and winter are known for being the city’s rainy months, so if you’re visiting during either of these seasons, you may find yourself caught in a storm. If this happens, drive slower than normal and pay extra attention to your surroundings. Some roads tend to get particularly busy during rush hour, like the Transversal de Cozumel. If you don’t want to get stuck in congestion, avoid being on this road between the hours of 8-9am and 5-6pm.
In case you want to rent a car from one of the companies that offer cheap car rentals in Cozumel, you must be at least 25 years. On hand, you must have a driver’s license that you’ve had for a minimum of 12 months, a credit card registered in your name and current address, and a passport or photo ID. Additionally, you need an International Driver’s Permit only if your regular driver's permit is printed in a non-Roman alphabet. Cheap car rentals in Cozumel charge young drivers a caution fee because of the perceived added risk; if you’re below 25 years, you should be prepared to pay a bit more than older drivers.
While driving cheap car rentals in Cozumel, you should be extra careful and vigilant about cyclists and pedestrians, as this city is full of both, and not all of them adhere to traffic rules. You should also be on the lookout for topes, which are very large speedbumps found in Mexico; these structures are placed throughout town and vary in height and width. Thus, if they catch you off guard, they could damage your car. Additionally, look out for signs, which in this city can be difficult to spot since they’re often hidden by palm trees and flowers.
In Mexico, all children under 12 years of age are expected to sit in back seats while riding in vehicles. According to the law, children up to the age of 2 are required to be in rear-facing seats while children between ages 3 and 5 are required to sit in forward-facing car seats. Children between 5 and 12 years of age must sit on booster seats with appropriate harnesses. With this in mind, if you intend to travel in your rental with a child, you should ensure that you have an appropriate child seat. Cozumel car rentals offer child car seats at pocket-friendly rates, and you can have one installed by your preferred agency at a cheap cost.

I went to Cozumel, Mexico and had not book any transportation yet, because we would like to check the situation first and decide to get car, taxi, scooter or other possible transportations. We decided to rent a car, however with local vendors we need to hassle and bargain, and it’s not cheap. I ended up book a car online (using Kayak, offered by Expedia). It had fair price, payment was done online and we got decent car for the price. with local car rental, i would get car without door or manual car. Altho it looks cool and hip, but it’s raining here and there, so I’m glad we got small sedan - with AC and we got automatic car too! Thanks Alamo Cozumel! we had pleasant trip and service :)

They did not have the car that I reserved. Also added additional fees at the pickup. They offered to take me to the hotel and deliver the car the next day, but we had already booked a tour that we needed the car for and honestly I didn’t trust them.

We arrived at Alamo and they did not have a vehicle for us. They said Kayak did not confirm whether Alamo had cars available. It was the worst car rental experience I have ever had.

the shop was closed. how is it even possible to rent a car!!!!
I bought the insurance online when I reserved the car but when I went to pick up the car the employee said the insurance I bought online was worthless. He said I need to buy insurance from him or I wouldn't have any, or very little liability coverage. I didn't appreciate having to buy insurance twice.

Car was fine, clean, and ran well. Employees were friendly and helpful. The car we reserved was not available so they wanted us to pay the difference which was thousands of US dollars. We had to call the third party rental company who said they would reimburse us the difference. What a hassle. Would much rather get something in down town with a set price.

Not sure where the disconnect happened but there needs to be better communication on additional fees and insurance that are to be charged. We rented a car that was advertised as $4.83/day. I have booked this cheap in years past and never had to pay more when picking up the car. This time I was charged and ADDITIONAL $320 for insurance. Will likely never book a car through Kayak again....

Pros:
Pond drop off a staff member took me in a single car to my gate which was unexpectedly pleasant.
Cons:
Biggest problem was the 1:20 wait to get my car. Even after I had completed all of the booking and payment details online. Severely understaffed, if I could have gone to another company I would have. I felt trapped without any possibility for escape. After 4+ hours of travel it was a very unpleasant welcome into Mexico.
They did not have the car in class available and then offered me a smaller car for the same price. After lots of haggling, they reduced the price marginally, tried to sell me insurance I didn't need, and then gave my car to another customer and said it was their last car, so I did not end up renting the car. It was a horrible experience.

The employees at the agency were very knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I rented an electric car and they showed me the ropes on how to use it and offered if the battery got low before my rent ran out to exchange it for another one (it was not necessary though). The car worked great. I have no complaints.

Pros:
The local operation is a scam The insurance was 3x the cost of the online rental ,and changed 4x ln a five minute conversation. We walked back to the airport with all of our luggage and rented from Hertz.
They did not have the car I reserved when I arrived at airport and could not give me any other option, even for the next day. I ended up getting a car from Europcar instead.
