Smaller is better for São Miguel, since the streets are very narrow in many parts. Backup camera and Bluetooth/Android Auto would be good since navigation is a bit tricky.

The roads are windy and steep in some areas. We rented a standard because they are so much more affordable but an automatic would have made life easier. Having said that, the standard was fine, and there are barely any traffic lights so the majority of the shifting is traffic circles and going up and down hills. There are lots of beautiful places to drive so having a car is essential. If possible, would stick with a smaller car bc the roads are pretty narrow.

The in town roads are super narrow and there are people and cars vying for the same space at times. We often had to put our side view mirrors in so we wouldn’t hit other cars or people on narrow sidewalks. The out of town roads were much better and it was way to get around.

  • Sao Miguel is closest to Ponta Delgada and is the biggest of the islands. With a rental car you will be able to visit many of its hotspots such as the Caldeira Velha waterfall and Furnas Hot Springs. In the Azores region there are many other islands that you can also visit. So why limit yourself to just Sao Miguel? With a rental car you can explore them all.

My experience with Ilha Verde was superb. I rented the cheapest car they had for an impromptu addition to a separate Azores island trip already planned where I had already paid $1,300 for that vehicle. Ilha verde had a very reasonably-priced Twingo for our time at this last-minute addition. Upon vehicle pickup, the attendant kindly alerted me that the Twingo didn’t have adequate power to get up the steep slopes the island is know for and that for $11 Euros total, we could upgrade to a more powerful vehicle with additional room. In the end, it was worth every Euro and turn in was a breeze. Additionally, when I had already left the airport, I realized that I did not have a full tank of gas, even though my checkout paperwork said I did. I addressed this issue during vehicle turn in, and two days later, they credited me for the amount of fuel that was missing. A+ experience with Ilha Verde. I would rent from them again.

The cars were not at the location we rented. We stood in line for over 30 minutes, then a lady said anyone who has a booked rental car, get in this van. Well, there were so many of us, we couldn’t all fit. Once we got in the van, it was at least a 10 minute drive out into the countryside to the place to get the car. Then we had to go back to town to pick up our people who couldn’t fit in the van. It was a mess. The car was nice and clean. But on return, I’ve never seen someone look at a car so thoroughly trying to find any little thing wrong with it.

Cons:

It was not possible to rent a car through them. Because they confirmed that the car booked is not possible to rent with debit card. Then they ensured that they have other cars that can be rented with debit card, but when we asked what offers they have, they did not respond. Whereas we easily rented a car through ANZ with a debit card.

While the pick up was very friendly I had read reviews about the drop off attendants trying to find any tiny reason to claim new damage. The roads on the island are sometimes a bit treacherous and it would be easy to get a small scratch or knick in the paint, tire or glass. The pickup attendant told me anything under 5cm wouldn't be reviewed, but I figured that was probably a lie. The pickup attendant downplayed the existing damage and the drop off attendant tried to blame me for a preexisting knick in a tire, which was, by the way, less than 5cm. Luckily I had videoed the pickup inspection where the attendant mentioned the knick, but otherwise I would have been paying for a new tire. Even after I played the video for him the drop off attendant still was hesitant to let me go without finding something wrong. The pickup inspection was about 60 seconds and the drop off inspection was almost 10 minutes. There are many reviews like this, and I can attest they are true. Even my video might not have been enough as I videoed the existing damage quickly thinking it had already been catalogued. Obviously it wasn't. This was the worst car rental return I've been through. Anyone renting from here should take about 15 minutes with the attendant present at pickup and slowly video every inch of the car. Or, better yet, there are several other companies on site to rent from with much better reviews, and despite what is written online they all have cars right at the airport, not far offsite. Definitely will not be using this company again. I wonder if all Sixt locations are like this or just this one.

Good vehicle that kept us safe and sturdy as we drove throughout Sao Miguel. We read reviews beforehand and highly encourage you to go to the Blue Elephant Car Wash in Ponta Delgada so you don’t get any charges for a dirty car. The only downside was that we had to get a shuttle to and from the airport. This was provided by Drive On Holidays but added time to the beginning and end of our trip.
