There is no other hotel in the Hyde Park/U Chicago area that is under $100/night. The hotel is within walking distance of the University on the north side of Hyde Park, and has a free shuttle to the University that runs three times a day. It was clean. Front desk staff was courteous, friendly and helpful. The hotel sits on Lake Shore Drive so there is a view of the lake; unfortunately the hotel room windows do not face it.
The security door did not latch unless you pulled it shut behind you. The toilet leaked every time you flushed it. The shower head squealed every time you took a shower. The bathtub plug leaked, so a bath required constantly running water. The vanity light took 5 minutes to turn on after you flipped the light switch. Staff left odd assortments of towels, some days too many for needs and other days didn't leave washcloths at all. You need to Google Map Lake Shore "Cafe", not "hotel", to find the correct location of the lobby entrance. It is actually around the corner from the LaQuinta Inn that also shares the same building. Skip the cafe and walk 1 1/2 blocks south on Cornell to Bridgeport Coffee House for your breakfast; you will be glad you did.
Close to Lack front Bike Path so that I could minimize time at the hotel
Sheets had bugs in them, plumbing backed up for tum and toilet, low water pressure in the shower
Rooms were big enough
The doors from the other guests were too loud! You can here slamming of the front door by rude guests. Not the hotel's fault but maybe a simple courtesy notice would suffice.
I didn't like anything the staff was rude even the manager. It is more like a motel than a hotel, I didn't feel safe there. You have to carry your Luggage up the stairs if your room is on the second floor. The entry door to my room did not seem secure. Booked this hotel through Kayak, my trip was for 6 nights, we stayed overnight waiting to get into another hotel. We checked out the next morning and Kayak assisted us in finding a better one. "What a dump"
You had to leave the hotel room go outside to the office to get ice. I hate that the owner could care less about improving this dump
Poor remodel... door know is half on, you can see through the bathroom door. The toilet paper roll is mounted FOUR FEET from the stool. Smelt like dead fish. Peeling ceiling.. beds were horrible. Talked to staff. They gave us free breakfast that was a buffet... but the 630 open was not set up until 745.. (they were running behind) needless to say we did not get our free breakfast before we had to leave.
Close to the city Comfortable Bed
Could hear a baby crying late night - walls not too thick
The rooms were quiet and comfortable. The pool was open and in good shape.
The streets around the hotel were difficult to get through due to large trucks and construction equipment taking up the road. There was also no signs denoting where the lobby/front desk was located. With it being connected to the La Quinta things were a little confusing at first.
Pool was closed, hotel is under renovation, would not recommend until completed. Lots of construction going on.
The location was nice and very easy to get to downtown.
The pool is closed for renovations even though the descriptions list a pool. They should update their description so they do not mislead their potential guests.
Lakeshore hotel and adjacent La Quinta now owned by La Quinta and under renovation. As of 6/21/15, the Lakeshore building is almost finished and is great. Original La Quinta building exterior still being renovated but some rooms are ready and look good. Complimentary breakfast is good and well maintained by staff but could be better (no scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage) . Staff was excellent in all areas - friendly, helpful, responsive, & proactive. My room was $119 a night but future booking prices show $180. Could be a timing issue. For $119, it was a good deal. For $180 I could get into the Hilton near by. Excellent value at approx. $120.
No complaints. Parking somewhat limited but we were able to find a spot without any trouble. Not sure what it will be like when all renovations are done and both buildings are more heavily occupied. Not sure if renovations will include exercise room or pool.
It was clean, newly remodeled room.
The website did not indicate that it was under renovation. We had a difficult time finding where to check in and such.
The only option I liked was the ability to move hotels.
The hotel was under construction! The hotel room we were given was nothing close to the pictures posted. The window was covered by a trash bag since there was construction. The hallways had cardboard boxes to walk over, and room was more of a motel room that smelled. The experience was terrible and I'll have to think twice to book through kayak again because they offer a hotel such as this on their website.
Price and Location are the strong points, and the rooms are actually nice and clean. Everything else is something to be desired...
This hotel is jank as f**k. I think they only have a few rooms available on one of the floors. You can tell, because when you look into the windows of the upper couple floors, you can tell they're being used mainly for storage. The hallways smell like pet urine. My mother and sister both agreed that they would not feel comfortable staying there without a man nearby. It's pretty ghetto. Great deal though! ^_^
The website for this hotel is extremely deceiving. Our initial room had a terrible stench of smoke and my girlfriend who has allergies to it was very bad off. We tried to get a refund through kayak/hotel after looking at the room and being checked in for just 15 minutes! The gentleman at the front desk was helpful but kayak nor the hotel would provide us with a refund. The stated that they needed to confirm with their manager which was not a guarantee at all and would take time before getting approval. This is unacceptable with our circumstance. We were moved to a different room which still smelled terribly like smoke and ultimately had to deal with it. The experience was terrible and I would have expected kayak or the hotel to accommodate a refund right away due to the circumstance. I will never book through kayak again due to them not accommodating us to provide a refund and because they offer a hotel such as this on their website.
The outdoor pool was excellent. The room was large and seemed to have plenty of room for us. The staff was very friendly and helpful Free parking was a great bonus
The hotel needed some updating on the outside-but we knew that when we booked the room. We were told that to have a refrigerator in the room was an extra charge- luckily there was one still in our room from the previous guests that wasn't removed.
