Relaxing and comfortable after a long journey The heating system and how to use it in your room!
Food was excellent Staff were very friendly. There was a very good Bus service to City center and also to Airport. Our bed was too small 4 foot.
The staff were attentive and friendly. The room was not too hot or cold and it was quiet.
Free Wifi internet. Decor, room, and bathroom, Dining tables were too high to be comfortable. Road noise was mostly masked in my room, but not sure about other rooms.
The staff were freindly and helpful with the exception of the room maid who let herself into the room in the morning without knocking and without apologising! Wasn't impressed - would not stay again. Will stick to Premier Inn in future.
The staff, in particular Brian the night porter who went the 'Extra Mile' in terms of service, help and courtesy
comfortable budget hotel ideal for business trips none
Location and style of hotel - motel style. Service at breakfast good and friendly Smoky atmosphere - had to change rooms. Beds uncomfortable, only twin beds available. Not very comfortable at all
Convenient location for us at the time At dinner, poor selection of desserts - but quality of what was available was ok
Cold, run down and over all not anything other than a place to (try) sleep.breakfast was good room was not very clean, beds were uncomfortable, quite run down
I did not like the size of the room it was far to small is my knees were touching the shower when sat on the loo. The drains needed sorted as this caused my room to smell and it was far to cold.
slept as i was working localy
Nothing The central heating didn't work. I was welcomed by a confused say 15 year old boy. there was a birthday party of the 13 year old daughter in the residents lounge. I didn;t get the seaview room I boooked. they didn;t eeven have my on line booking. In fact there was not on redeeming facot.
The historic significance and the hotel's representation of all that is good and traditional about English "superior guest-house" hospitality. I seriously cannot think of any.
Polite staff and good breakfast.
friendly staff. was made welcome. nothing
friendly helpful, clean and tidy value for money
The room was a sea view room and very large, bedroom and bathroom very clean, very very close to southend pier and amusements and to the town centre itself bed was hard but that is a personal prefernce and not one that should be held accountable towards the hotel, the noise from the floorboards from the room above was rather loud both in the night and in the morning so not one for the light sleeper
The room was comfy, spacious and lovely decor, view of sea was lovely to wake up to Nothing at all
Good clean family run hotel. Pleasant staff, good facilities and close to attractions. a great bar/bistro with a seaside outlook was situated on the beach a few yards away. None
Very friendly owners
Warm welcome, friendly atmosphere made me feel very at ease.
Very friendly owner and freshly decorated.
The room was clean and well stocked with tea and coffee, the staff were friendly.
Lovely styled room, nice suprise. loved the sofa. loads of tea, sugar and milk always an asset Heating didnt work. toilet was heavily stained and smelt, holes in the sheets blinds didnt close at the bottom, had to stand on sofa to draw the curtain. fire alarm sounds 'fire in zone 1. there wasnt any members of staff on site so I dealt with it, muting the alarm and calling a number. My guess is a smoker but if it hadnt been we could have been in trouble
Location. Breakfast. Owners. Almost booked a nearby place at half the price, but was swung by the prospect of an 'Executive Room'. The Waverley has some really lovely rooms... but not all of them it seems, & unfortunately the room we got was a disappointing one - duvet had cigarette burn; carpet was most stained I've ever seen; room was cramped; had to stand on the bed to operate tv from the top (no remote). It's a shame as some rooms looked great, but that just makes it even more disappointing when you pay the same money for one of the poorer ones. We asked if there was another room - but they were all reserved, which shows that people in the know, do return. For a lovely stay ask for one of the more recently refurbished rooms, otherwise you might be disappointed
Only one-night stay - as we had wedding to go to nearby on the Saturday evening - but found it to be a pleasant, friendly hotel to stay in. No
OK facilities. Smell in bathroom (room 218); location and traffic noise not wonderful.
The general old world appearance and decor none
The total service was excellent.
the old atmosphere
Staff are excellent. Oldest hotel in England. Quaint. Excellent Restaurant. Excellent Bathroom and lots hot water. No smoking rooms were all in modern extension not the historic building and the bedroom decor was tired. TV did not work properly.
was there one night only , room was warm which was good. breakfast was too expensive.
location good, well preserved old building
Staff were very friendly and helpful
Almost nothing The staff, the noise in the room
Very relaxed atmosphere Noisy disco (?)
clean and comfortable room, nice pub downstairs I hit my head quite painfully. But that was my own fault ;)
Not Much to like. Karoke on a Sunday night until about 1am on Monday morning. Could not park my car, could not get to my room, could not get to sleep.
The lady on reception was very good During the evenining the guy behind the bar obviously had a problem about something, we heard him swearing then he went outside and had 2 cigarettes. Later that evening the bar was very busy and the same guy said he could not serve me because there were no glasses. I stood there waiting, he then said to me why are you staring at me I have already told you I have np glasses. Another member of staff came over and served me, no problems. He spoilt was was a good stay at the Bull.
Central location in small town. Very quaint. Staff very helpful when asked for local advice on shopping and transport on to a wedding we were attending nearby -we asked about taxis and within a couple of minutes Chris came back and said taxi booked and would collect us from back door car park. Also said no problem for us to sit and have coffee while we waited.
Good food and excellant service.
Helpfulness of the staff in providing a heater for my room, breakfast was good Room a little chilly - particularly the ensuite
Staff were really helpful and friendly- great breakfast options :) Picky yes, but I would have liked a proper shower. Couldn't get the attachment on the bath to a decent temperature.
The food was terrific, great value for money, lovely location, and contrary to previous comments - there is a car park! Some staff were V.unfriendly, bathrooms dated with no shower curtain and no frosted glass/curtains over window!
the staff were great and great food we were quoted £39 online but at check out payed £55
Dirty , room lacked essentials, very grotty place as a whole Dirty room lacked essentials very grotty place
Was treated with very good maner room was nice overall very good value None
Worst hotel I have stayed in, please avoid. Room was filthy, bed very uncomfortable, shower fittings hanging off the wall. I do not usually write reviews, but please avoid.
Landlord was very friendly and helpful - breakfast was amazing - delightfully offbeat but wonderful experience - would recommend to anyone who was open to something a bit different. Room was a tad small by Australian standards but not by English ones. Linen and towels were clean as was room.
The friendliness of the manager and the location of hotel were excellent
Good camra pub with very friendly staff and owner. Good breakfast. Bed was most uncomfortable & lumpy !
The landlord was very friendly and made me most welcome. The room was not particularly clean. I did not feel it had been properly prepared; little things like the toilet roll only being about a quarter left. The shower was also barely better than a trickle
Nice and quiet, friendly area Bathroom a bit small
The staff were all very good and very helpful. The rooms could do with updating.
Food good Dreary, motel like feel. In need of major refurb which they are planning
Good value for money dinner menu difficulty mastering the room heating controls
pleasantness and friendliness of all staff. Good food well presented Rooms were a little on the dark side
It was a freindly and clean hotel. Location was perfect for us, as we were going to a birthday party nearby
the rooms werent great but did for a 1 night stay for work purposes and considering the price they were ok ,van was safe outside so all in all ok
Everything worked, comfy bed, clean Felt old fashioned even though recently redecorated
The rooms are in need of an overhaul - the bathroom needed a good clean.
Restaurant and leisure club excelent TV system was not working. Motel style is offvputting especially in poor weather
The staff were accommodating and the food was good The bedrooms are in need of refurbishment, they are very tired especially the bed, I could feel the springs.
It was comfortable and warm. It was extremely noisey on a Monday evening because of a regular band practice. No one was made aware of this. It was so loud that you couldn't stay in your room because of the noise and vibration.
Price, breakfast Noise
Nice Helpful Staff, nice clean enviroment Menu choise a bit limited,
There was no hot water in the shower
It's location, it is on the high street and could not possibly be any closer to town even if they tried! Nothing
Well, It is the first time I live in a hotel with almost 500 years history. The room is a little small...
the decor of rooms noise outside at night
Location Room over the High Street, too much noise!
The old fashioned style and age of the surroundings. The Ghost waking us up.
Excellent room, fantastic food and friendly staff n/a
Convenience Couldn't find a vending machine
beautiful large room. The shower head in our room would not stay in place so we had to wedge the shower lead round the taps. It made having a shower a challenge! The chairs in the room were somewhat hard so an armchair in the room would have been the icing on the cake.
Efficient service Not really but no bath plug in my room and people smoking outside my window so couldn't open as it was ground floor. Bathroom grouting needs attention in the room I stayed in.
Location to City Centre Bath water not hot enough
No food drink or room service available 2-6 p.m at weekends. We wanted afternoon tea!
Room was very comfortable and clean Staff although helpful were not well informed on local attractions/ services
Good sized clean bathroom
bedrooms staff at breakfast were to busy speaking about their evening out and not paying enough attention to guests.
size of bed cooked breakfast staff Bar area
Very convenient for my business visit, Parking available, decent accomodation, security precautions.in place Breakfast next door a disappointment. Not value for money, Too much like a supermarket style
Very comfortable beds None
we found the accomodation clean and fairly comfortable, the room sizes were generous and the breakfast was excellent value for money I found the checking in process very slow
Staff, service, sleep quality, excellent en-suite, cleanliness, location. Wifi cost too high but free wifi availabile in Halfway House pub just outside.
I liked the way the hotel was on the sea front and not to far away from the main southend. eg pier, town and amusements I did'nt like the shower. It was'nt very powerfull and the water flow was rubbish.
very helpfuk staff on reception and the night porter was excellent The total breakfast was a farce , the service was appaling , slow service and a didnt give a dm attitude .The buffet was poorly replenished and there were not any beakers for coffee only cups , no saucers
Friendly and chatty staff who were always approachable. Extremely comfy beds.
it was very clean and the staff were helpful. Good location too.
Ver near to location required, friendly helpful staff. Was a bit surprised to be asked for id when I requested to pay by cash.
Staff were very friendly Breakfast was extremely poor and in my view unacceptable after having paid over £90 for two of us
Relaxing, good facilities and standard of hotel.
very relaxing and enjoyable not enough time to do a lot more in the time we spemt there
Food in resturant Busy with corporate event all weekend
The hotel staff. We were impressed by the check-in staff on reception, the evening duty manager & service staff at breakfast. All were welcoming, helpful, charming and very well trained. Proximity to the event we were attending at Layer Marney Tower.
Quick service Bathroom decor is a little dated and te location isnt highlighted too well in the surrounding area
Excellent facilities, well laid out room Had to ask for a remote for TV, but was supplied very promptly
Have stayed several times, it is a suitable location for my requirements Could do with a fridge in the room
very polite and coutious staff. Room cleanliness bar food cold be improved.
The facility and the faculties were awesome . Nothing
At 1:45 am the radiator in the room woke us up making such a loud drilling noise for about 20 minutes. The morning breakfast was not very nice the beacon and sausages were over cooked and bland and we had to serch for someone to top our coffee up
Sky sports in the room Well kept room Well kept hotel Nice surroundings They could have been a bar menu
Very pleasant stay albeit for one night only. Quiet location which was impressive.
Very nice breakfast. Charges for internet, it should be wireless and provided for free.
room size and ease of access to colchester utd football ground(taxi £10) breakfast is a set price £13.95 alittle bit out of most peoples range
Facilities and cleanliness of hotel. Ability to hear Essex girl antics in adjoining room
After a long journey in the fog, it was lovely to have room service meal (from a well-mannered and lively steward), rest, relax and watch the rugby on tv! N/A
The gentleman was very helpful at reception-went out of his way to assist me.
The lovely breakfasts Nothing
The staff were really frendly. The breakfast had a nice variety and tasted very good N/A
The welcome of the staff I was made to feel welcome in all areas, and you felt the staff enjoyed their role rather than just being at work.
Helpfull staff Bathroom not really clean , specifically the bathroom floor was dirty on arrival
Everything was very well done from start to end - amazing. None.
Friendly staff Clean and functional room Good parking facilities Insufficient acoustic insulation Noisy floorboards
Would be good to have an alarm clock and phone availability
Such a pleasure to find polite, helpful and friendly staff. Very quiet night's stay but in good location to reach colchester town centre, pubs and restaurants. None
Excellent hotel. Friendly Staff. Room was immaculate. Close to Town Centre. Internet should be free.
room was warm, clean, quiet. Bathroom excellant, even had a proper hairdryer. Staff helpfeul, efficient and smart. Could have been more tea bags and milk in hospitality tray, but on mentioning at reception were told they would have been happy to deliver more. As it was past one am didn't think it worth it.
Nice pleasant clean hotel. Very close to Southend airport! No problems with noise. Car park fairly cramped and you might end up a fair walk away from the hotel. Staff were very friendly. The room was fairly small but as I expected. I'd be very upset if I'd paid the full room rate! always look around for a discounted price!
Proximity to airport - London Southend. NA
The room was smart and clean. The bathroom was particulary new and fresh. No TV remote control in the room. Feint smell of cigarette smoke. Breakfast ok but serve yourself.
The view from the suite window. Cook, turned up for breakfast after we did when we were there waiting at 8am. The waitress was also distraught waiting for him to turn up as she could not get into the hotel. We wanted an early start for a 6 hour drive to Cornwall but had to wait for breakfast as we had already decided to have breakfast before we left, but had to wait for a young cook (not chef) to turn up for work because he was probably pissed from the night before and didn't care about any of the guests. Not very professional and I would certainly dismiss him on this occasion. Gives young people who really want to work a bad name. He doesn't deserve a job.
Hotel is maintained to a high standard, staff very friendly rooms are small
The room was fantastic, it was a suite. the views were beautiful in the daylight and at night. The food was really good, and reasonably priced as was the bar. I liked the separate apartments block with their own entrance. The breakfast was very good and fresh.
It's location was ideal for my purposes My wife is not good on stairs
Very nice hotel. 1 mile from the pier so encouraged walking. Large carpark at the back which was great.
Peace and quite
The staff were pleasant and the breakfast good. The room was good too and the bed comfortable. We were located opposite the hotel in the annexe across a small alley leading to the car park, which we didn't know about beforehand. Very open, but on a rainy windy night, not pleasant getting to the other side. No faults otherwise except for lack of hairdrier in room maybe?
We had a most comfortable stay and enjoyed dinner on the night we arrived. The staff were excellent and helpful. We had trouble finding the hotel mainly because of the road works in town and it was dark when we arrived but it would have hleped had the hotel's name been more prominently displayed. Parking was not a problem. There was nothing we did not like. As stated, we had a very comfortable stay.
A fine hotel in stunning surrounings with 2 golf courses attached. All the staff were very friendly and made you feel at home immediately. No complaints
Value for money accommodation Food - roomservice meal was expensive and not the highest quality
Location and hotel facilities (spa) Restaurant closed earlier than we'd have liked (9pm), but room service was excellent and the food was very good.
Chef took the time to discuss my dietry needs&supplied me a lovely me. Dining rooms was good.Hotel was very busy but we were not disturbed by noise. Room outlook was over car park, not so good. Ordered papers but werre not told we had to collect from reception. Spa had products on show however when I wanted to purchase something I was told that as yet they did not have any to sell. For me mattress was a bit 'tired' fortunately had taken a travel memory foam mattress. Would recomend both the hotel and your services and hope to arrange astay via yourselves next year
the staff were very helpful the room was very clean and tidy comfortable a very worthwhile stay for the price I thought the room would include breakfast as this is a must as a feature in the current climate and for he price...on the basis of this we decided to eat away from the hotel for meals as this offered the best value for money
Clean, friendly staff, good food and enjoyed the pool!!! Nothing. Shame about the weather but no one can do nothing about that !
Excellent location 10 mins off the a12 in pleasant rural location. Good facilities, good sized well equipped rooms, friendly staff Restaurant a bit pricy but lounge bar meals reasonably priced and good quality.
Roomy, clean, small details (quality of beds sheets etc) but above all, the marvellous staff team. Made my long business stay a real pleasure. Food good in restaurant too. Very slow room heaters, if you forget to inform the staff and get your room 'pre warmed' you may have to sit in your overcoat for 10-15 minutes until it gets going, but hey, maybe it's an environmental thing! Breakfast bit uninventive, same every day.
It had a nice bathroom Very basic room the travel inn offers more comfort for less money
Made to feel very welcome and comfortable. Wonderful setting. Just lack of toiletaries in bathroom but I did have an economy room. And would have been nice to have rack of toast brought from the kitchen at breakfast instead of having to queue for the single slow toaster (with army of hungary golfers in front of me!)
Lovely confortable bed and pillows, great breakfast None
Good sized room, lovely sea view. All round cleanliness was excellent. Hotel situated in prime location. Toilet in room was a little small. No Hotel Car Park.
Overall we were very satisfied with our room, the evening meal and breakfast. The self service tea making facilities were cumbersome. To take a small teapot, a cup (there did not appear to be any saucers) a spoon, a jug of milk and a plate necessitated 2 or 3 trips back and forth to the table.
Overall everything was very satisfactory. None
Excellent & helpful night staff. Heater didn't work in room.
Location easy to get to. But Post code on sat nav took me to the airport. All was satisfactory.
Friendly reception staff, spotless linen and room cleanliness. going round and round the car park looking for parking space upon check-in, and then having to wait until parking space available.
Friendly and helpful staff, 24/7 staffing, good website, efficient check- in and check-out procedures and comfortable times, free parking, luggage storage facility (optional) at reception, clean and spacious room, big double bed, elevator to 1st floor available. Extra big supermarket across the road. Wifi as optional extra. (Not used). Average pub food available next door. Drinks / crisps-bars machine at reception. Limited channel choice on tv. Somewhat poor reception. Bit soft matress. No mini-fridge. Breakfast on the weekend from 8.00 am (which for me was a problem as I had to start at 8.00 am on the Saturday).
The staff were very friendly and helpful The bed was slightly to soft for us but that is just a personal observation
