Pros: Having stayed in a high-end ryokan the previous night, we wanted to be a little more budget conscious. This place had caught my eye as it had a picture of Golden Retrievers on their marketing photos, and looked to be very family friendly. These turn out to be the owners' dogs, and they were a HUGE hit with my children, as were the Christmas decorations, which were already in place. This is a western style purpose-built Pension, with large family rooms and ensuite toilets. Possibly about 8 rooms in total. We had 4 single beds in our room, and still lots of extra space for a small sofa and a tv. The beds were very comfortable, with heavy duvets to keep out the cold. There was a heater in the room, but we turned it off at night and had a slight breeze coming in. Everyone slept very well. There was a shared indoor onsen, and an outdoor onsen (rotenburo), a few metres walk into the garden. This was available for private use only, and on a first come, first served basis. Max 30/45 mins per family. It was lovely, with landscaping and a view of the autumn foliage. Heaven. The day we arrived heralded the first snowfall, so it was much colder than we had expected, and totally thrilling for us all to see the autumn leaves AND snow at the same time. The owners, a young couple with their first baby, had this establishment running like clockwork. The wife and her mother are the chefs, and we had the most incredible dinner, with soup, bread, rice, roast chicken, grilled fish with cream sauce, salad, dessert, and a lovely bottle of white wine (additional charge). Most residents were families with small children, and the children all got together to play games after the meal. It was an incredibly friendly and inviting place. Breakfast the next morning was also huge and delicious, so all in all, an unexpectedly wonderful find. We noted that the ski slopes were very close by, and plan to make a return visit there later in the winter.

Pros: this hotel owns by a family and all of the members are very friendly. I appreciated the excellent food and warm welcome in this hotel. staffs are friendly for checking information as this is the 1st time of us to ski in this area. very thoguhtful to pick us up from station. I highly recommend the super hydrogen spa as its a private spa with views.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: We had been told that the Minakami area was definitely worth a visit, and since we like to stay in more rural, authentic Japanese places, this ticked all the boxes. With just a handful of rooms, this feels very intimate. The owner, who also is an accomplished Shakuhachi player, told me that the hotel had been renovated recently, and it showed. The room we had was a suite, with Tempur mattresses on a raised platform, and the children had futons in the living area which were laid out during the evening. The decor was traditional, but VERY stylish, with quirky elements we loved. Dinner (kaiseki banquet style) and breakfast (fish, rice, pickles, salad) were traditional, and the dinner was particularly exquisite, with an autumn theme to the presentation. Our 7 year old was offered a slightly more child-friendly option. This type of food is not for the picky eater, so don't choose to eat at this establishment unless you are prepared to try everything. There are no alternatives. After dinner the owner performs on his shakuhachi, and then guests have a chance to try the instruments themselves - this is a unique experience. The hotel also offer an in-room massage, which we booked. The masseur was very good, and used the shiatsu technique for 45 mins for myself and my husband. Very relaxing! The hydrogen bath was very unique, and is only available for private bookings (which we did both evening and morning of our departure). There is also a shared onsen facility, with male and female separation. In a tiny hamlet up in the mountains, near to several other open air onsen baths, and not far from the ski areas, the ropeway, and the wonderful craft and farming village of Takumi no Sato - this is a MUST, especially if you have kids. Another wonderful Japanese experience !
Cons: My husband's Tempur mattress was TOO firm, so he did not sleep especially well.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fine food, clean rooms, quiet, private, wonderful spa.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about the place - the wonderful and generous hosts, the onsen facilities with the amazing view of Mt. Tanigawa, and the exquisite meals (the kaiseki dinner was one of the best meals we've had in Japan). To top it all, the father of the family, a Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) master builder and player, performed before the guest after dinner. Moreover, the Ryokan surroundings in the lovely Tanigawa onsen village is perfectly located if you plan on hiking in the Minakami area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All the family are very friendly. The ryokan is nice, room is big, we enjoyed very much the private hydrogen onsen. Above all we very much appreciated the meals, they were just perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The six of us stayed at the room on the top floor, and we couldn't have asked for a more comfortable and spacious arrangement. We were greeted with a sumptuous and nutritious breakfast every day, before we'd make use of their special "super-hydrogen" onsen (followed by a nice nap). Yado Kanzan has the most generous hosts that made us feel at home throughout our 3-day stay. Regrettably, as we had nightly engagements outside of the hotel, we missed their traditional Japanese dinners and flute performances, but we cannot wait to return and enjoy the full experience soon.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A lot of thought has obviously gone into this amazing property, from the private hydrogen bath to the Michelin standard food to the beautiful decor. The owner loves his job and it shows. We've stayed in ryokan that cost much more and weren't half as comfortable or stylish
Cons: Absolutely nothing

Pros: Perfect all along. Incredible staff.

Pros: Amazing experience, worth coming to Gunma just for this hostel. The rooms were so comfy and it doesn’t feel like a hostel at all. Every night the host gathers the people staying around the dining room and provides delicious food and drink, the host also drives people to different onsens every night and drives you to the train station if you want to go somewhere. 10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything about our experience - from the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the extremely friendly staff and whisked off to our room to get settled. Everything about Bettei Senjuan is impeccable, from the beautiful grounds, to the rooms, and stunning onsen (both the public ones and the in-room onsen). However, the food was by far the highlight of our stay - everything was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. This is hands down the best hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. The only negative was having to leave!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful staff, food, room and view. We stayed two nights and had wonderful snacks provided in between meals on our full day. Food is beautifully presented, the dinning rooms have stunning views, our staff member Narumi was very happy, helpful and lots of fun. We really hope to stay here again!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It’s all that you expect from a ryokan experience. Staff is very friendly.the breakfast, lunch and dinner were excellent. Very welcoming and excellent service
Cons: Some of the property old equipment is not fully removed/fixed. For example old shower handle that no longer finctional. Hole on the wall from door handle.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is located in a secluded quiet area but still is only 10 minutes drive from JR Minakami station, You felt the hotel is different from arrival. It is well desigined to have a luxurious feel; supplemented by the very friendly and helpful staff. The room is spacious, tiday and clean; with a private open air onsen which The qualify of food in both dinner and breakfast are very nice.
Cons: Can't really complain. If I have to pick one, the public bath is nice but rather ordinary. But this is not really so important as most rooms in the hotel have its own private bath.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were very roomy and comfortable and the onsens were amazing. Also the option of private onsen is always a plus. Lots of snacks and beverages available.
Cons: The dinner provided could have been a little better, however it was only around 1200yen so this could have been due to miscommunication and translation issues.
5.5 Okay
Pros: It was a decent ryokan for the price, but not much more.
Cons: The staff clearly treated guests differently, which didn't bother us too much, but was still a bit weird.
9.5 Excellent

Pros: The property is nice, clean and relaxing. The dinners and breakfasts were very good as well. The onsens are nice, with a selection of different ones alternating between female/male at different times of the day. The staff speak mostly Japanese with a couple of them knowing some English which makes it better in my opinion, knowing a lot of Japanese people stay here too!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very authentic Japanese experience. Everything from checking in, rooms, beddings, food, and stuffs are very good. The highlight is the dinner course which includes 4 courses.
Cons: A little more comfy futon would be great. Bring your own toiletries if you don't plan to go topuvlic onsen as they don't provide any in the room.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The food was outstanding here, they put a lot of care and attention into every part of the meal. I would come back in a heartbeat! The room was very spacious and comfortable, and the private onsen, and public onsen was amazing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and excellent food
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff is really nice and speaks fluent English. The views from the balcony are amazing as well as the public bath outside.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing experience! My room with a private onsen bath outside was superb and great value. The public baths were also clean and tidy. The included dinner and breakfast were delicious and worthy of a 5 star restaurant. The staff were great, happy to help in any way they could to explain things. The area was good, a huge supermarket was less than 10 minutes walk away, and Minakami JR train station about 20 minutes walk. On my first morning it had snowed overnight and the whole town looked like a dream! Definitely recommend a stay for a couple of nights to soak up the atmosphere, onsen and the food. I’d also recommend it over the other larger multi story hotels nearby which just look unfriendly.
Cons: Minakami itself is a rather strange little town with not a great deal going on. At some point in the past it was obviously a huge tourism hot spot, with many massive high rise hotels lining the river but now totally derelict and crumbling. Perhaps the Shinkansen changed things when it bypassed the town years ago. Definitely worth a visit though to Micasa for a relaxing stay!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Large rooms Good but simple meals
8.3 Excellent
Pros: the location is easy to find and not far from town and other attractions. The staffs are all very nice, helpful, and they can speak English. I guess, its the family business. The rooms are larger than we expected. My parents enjoyed the private onsen so much.
Cons: The dinner and breakfast provided by the hotel are a bit under our expectation. They served the basic meal sets - nothing 'wow' but just simply reasonable and healthy foods which is acceptable for us. The onsen baths are quite small compared to the bigger hotel but everything else is up to standard and clean, which is understandable.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Friendly Staffs. Design. Attention to detail. Meal. The River View. Onsen.
Cons: They charged me for 42000 yen for just one night stay. That's too pricey. Overprice for what I have in return.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Wow: I am so glad that I booked the room with the private hot tub outside. What made it even more spectacular was that it snowed for the 2 days we were there and to sit outside in a hot tub with snow....one can only imagine the beautiful scene. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast was awesome as was the very professional staff (all family) that went out of their way to make sure all was well. A definite MUST to anyone going to Minakami.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Nice clean well service
Cons: Nothing
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is a fabulous Ryokan, the food is excellent and everything in the build looks pristine. We chose a room with our own hot tub as this was the last "Onsen" hotel in our list. If you can afford it, we recommend it, sitting at night on your own bath is an amazing feeling. The room was huge, and extremely well decorated. Even the toilet was extra especially, as in automatically opened and closed (even on the high-end for Japanese toilets). We when in between season (not white winter anymore but not spring yet) so the scenery was not at its peak (white from snow or green full of life), nevertheless I liked seen this other side of Japan, less electronic and neon, and more regular folks. One of he person on staff was a native English speakers, which made everything super easy. The owner's husband speak Spanish (also native) in case you rather communicate in that language.
Cons: I leave this in case some people do not like to walk. The place is a good 15 minute walk from the station on streets with no side-walk. You can arrange a pick up with the hotel. However, then you missed walking thru town, for us not an issue at all. Just some folks may prefer to consider this point.

Pros: This hotel is like a leaf out of a poetry book. While the hotel building shows its age, the staff and the arrangements are near perfect. Their breakfast and dinner arrangements and hospitality are remarkable. Please visit to experience traditional Japanese customs in a warm and friendly atmosphere. God bless them.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful mountains surroundings with snow. The property itself has a classic nice charm about the place for a Ryokan. Nice and peaceful. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Especially Go San! Made our trip really wonderful, enjoyable and warm in the winter cold. Thank you Go San and all the staff!

8.7 Excellent (813 reviews)
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Hoshi Onsen Chojukan in Minakami, you'll be 7 minutes by car from Sarugakyo Onsen. This ryokan is 8.7 mi (14 km) from Naeba Ski Resort and 10.5 mi (16.9 km) from Mt. Naeba Ski Resort.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything good except the mens shower timeslot is too early in the morning
9.5 Excellent
Pros: It took a shinkansen trip and two bus changes to reach the hotel but it all paid off! The remote location was exactly what we were looking for, a chance to see rural areas that are new to us. We were lucky to get a larger room with an extra wing that serves as a reading room. The breakfast and dinner was superb, very clean taste and makes good use of local ingredients. The lunch menu was optional and was not as extravagant as the other two but still tasty. The english speaking staff was excellent (we forgot to inquire for his name) and the three baths were so beautiful! Overall, they delivered more that we expected! We even saw monkeys during our bus ride back to the train station, probably why the area was named Sarugakyo.
Cons: They didn't clean the room every day and there were some small seasonal bugs inside. And I did wish they provided information on the ingredients more. They gave us a slip of paper with a complete english translation of what was being served for the first time, but did not do that for the rest of the stay (although the guy did explain everything) but that's minor stuff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Incredible place! Old and traditional! Highly recommended!!!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hoshi onsen is tucked away far off the beaten track in the mountains both of Minakami. It is an incredible old building and feels like a trip back in time. The room was beautiful and looked over the river running through the complex. The staff catered to our every need. The onsen were incredible with the main onsen mostly mixed and the other two are gender segregated at alternating times. You will find yourself lost in time with the days disappearing to sitting drinking tea and bathing.
Cons: Fine for us with a car but the onsen is quite far from civilisation which means access is tricky. Also the Ryokan serves traditional Japanese food which can be very challenging for some western eaters (it’s a long way to other food options)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a wonderful onsen, a national treasure and an experience that we will never forget. The nature, facilities, staff and food are stellar. The food itself is worth a trip, yet alone the amazing onsen experience. We will be back here, I know it.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Food was great, onsen very nice
Cons: Few services
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Outdoor and indoor are some of the best we ve seen in Japan. The indoor might be the most beautiful, we spent hours in it. Will come back just because of these. Location in the mountain is great too
Cons: Service and attention is good but not as the levels of most of the Ryokan in Japan. Room and the overall place needs renovation Dinner was was the most disapointing, they got lots of customers and little attention is given to the cooking and the ingredients. That being said, it s still good and enjoyable, it's just not as good as what you are used to eat in Japan
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service is great. View from room is wonderful.
Cons: Price is too high
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I enjoyed the food and the pools. The service was excellent.
Cons: I wish the outdoor pool was mixed gender.

Pros: I loved my one-night stay here. The driver picked me and a few other guests up from the train promptly at 3pm and we arrived at the propert by 3:15. From there is was magical. As I was the only non-Japanese traveler, one of the English speaking hosts gave me a specialized tour and English directions on how to use the spa and the other facilities. He was incredibly patient and was able to answer the 2-3 questions I had. Loved the free massage chairs, the space was incredibly quiet the entire time (I rarely ran into other guests), the food was amazing, and the Onsen (I only used the half outside one) was great. I would love to go back again.
Cons: Nothing!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: 1. The dinner and breakfast was simply awesome. Best we had in our 5 days Japan trip this time round. 2. Staff were really friendly, helpful and accommodating. It was snowing quite heavily when we arrived and steps leading to hotel entrance was covered in snow and ice. The staff were amazingly strong and carried all our luggages into the property. 3. The room was spacious and very clean. Futons were comfortable. 4. The property was beautifully designed and very cozy as well. 5. Parking on property is free. As it was snowing overnight, they even cleared all the snow from our car the next morning so we could just jump in and drive off after check out.
Cons: 1. The public baths were very small. Good thing we had our own private bath in our room.
6.3 Good
Pros: The hotel onsen, the outdoor bathroom, the hotel is lovely
Cons: The beds were small hard.and very uncomfortable. Our kids had a better sleep.on tatamis on the floor. We couldnt sleep at all.the food was really special and we are not picky eaters and love japanese food. We didnt like the food at this location .
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Overall, they are excellent in making it a relaxing, comfortable stay, where you can perfectly disconnect and relax.
Cons: The rotenburo doesn't strictly feel like a rotenburo, but it was still very nice.

Pros: This was a wonderful start to our 12 day easter vacation in Japan, with an onsen mountain experience of peace and relaxation. Arriving in the morning ,with 7 hour jetlag, we made our way by taking trains from Narita airport to Tokyo and further north to Gunma area. The hotel came to pick us at the local train station in a small shuttlebus. Then we were shown into their large lounge and served te and enjoyed the mountain view. It was a wonderful introduction to traditional Japanese life style. We had 3 rooms all with japanese furniture. 1 room had a private onsen hot bath in the room, the other 2 rooms had private toilets and then shared the use of the large onsen bath, which had a choice of 2 hot baths inside and 2 outsides. ( seperat bathes for women and men ) All our our rooms had large windows with a wonderful view af the river, forest and the snow-covered Tanigawa-dake / Mount Tanigawa. The food and service was an special experience. By staying 2 nights, we enjoyed 2 different Japanese dinners, with numerous courses, served in our own dining room, with many esquiste details, everything arranged and served with respect for tradition, beauty and taste. We enjoyed one Japanese breakfast and one western breakfast. We were the only european guests, but the hotel was busy with Japanese guests. All the personel went out of there way to communicate and make us happy. They were very helpful and kind towards our 1 year old. Some of us took a visit to the top of mountain Tanigawa, and the rest visited a neighbor town to participate in the Nurmata Sakura festival with blooming cherry trees.

Pros: Everything about our stay at Minakamisansou was great. The staff, environment and private Onsen were great, but the authentic food was the highlight.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Room was very spacious, clean and came with a lot of furnishings that made our stay very comfortable, our favourite was the in-ground kotatsu that was great for lounging around. - The view that looked out into the hills and forest from the room was awesome and made our mornings very serene. - Breakfast and dinner were both Japanese Kaiseki and were delicious and very filling. - Staff were very hospitable, attentive and did whatever they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. - Both the in-room open-air onsen and the public onsen were amazing (However, it was hotter compared to others places). - They provided complimentary self-service coffee which was V60 drip coffee where you'd grind your beans fresh and pour hot water over it, it was actually pretty tasty. - A good place to stay if you're planning on exploring the area via car (we went snowboarding at a few nearby snow resorts), there's a lot of outdoors activities to be done in Minakami.
Cons: - The room we stayed in had a faint smell of cigarette smoke, which I'm guessing they allowed smoking in our room previously. - It would be hard to get around the area if you don't have a car.

Pros: The food, the service and the location.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: When we almost get to the hotel, due to snowy weather the car we hired was not able to crawl up because of the slippery road, after I called the hotel for help, the staff arrived by a van and helped us. The staff was very nice and also arranged the shuttle to the nearest JR station for us to catch the ski place shuttle (half hour from the nearest JR station to the ski place). For the new year celebration, they provided us with extra traditional Japanese noddle for each and every one of us.
Cons: There is no hot water in the room, only cold water which is a bit hard in the cold winter.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Delicious dinner with edible leaves and mountain veggies and fresh fish. Loved the forested area where we took long walks around the rice fields.
Cons: Too far to walk to the ryokan and had to take a 7 min taxi ride, but it was fine.

Pros: The staff was extremely friendly. I made a mistake on the date of my reservation but they were able to accommodate. The dinner was huge and delicious. Staff was extremely hospitable.
Cons: You might be woken up by snow plows if there is heavy snow. Not the hotels fault, but worth noting.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We were picked-up & dropped-off, the room rate included a fine, home cooked Japanse dinner & breakfast (unlike the information says...) and the hosts were a lovely couple. Very friendly. Room and bathroom are clean and spacious. Quiet location in plain green nature with some houses around, near ski-lifts
Cons: Nothing; this is an excellent example of fine hospitality!

Pros: The owners are so lovely, the house is full of quirky things. Their cooking was delicious!! We totally enjoyed it all and would go back in a flash.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was a beautiful place with a very comfortable atmosphere. It has a nice little onsen and the staff was AMAZINGLY friendly. They were so helpful.
Cons: Although the booking.com site said there was no food included in the meal, a lot of reviewers said there was. I should have contacted the pension beforehand to inquire about food and it is my own fault for not doing so. Luckily I brought some snacks, because the food cooked for the other guests smelled amazing and I got so hungry. It is a bit frustrating that the pension website shows the same price I paid comes with food. SO if you book directly through them you can get a meal.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The host was very kind in picking us up from Minakami Kogen ski resort and drop off the next day at takaragawa onsen. Breakfast was fabulous with good quantity. The Onsen was spacious for a couple with snow view.
Cons: No yukata.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Excellent hotel with a good service. The room was very comfortable. The location is lovely and convenient. We can lock the small onsen bath for privacy. So overall, it is an amazing experience.
Cons: The meals are a bit expensive in my opinion, and very few restaurants and convenience stores are available around.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The couple that run the house where lovely and did what they could to help us
Cons: A little out of the way for the map guide in the booking sheet
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I have too many compliments to make about here so I 'd rather list them up: 1. Hospitality - the owners are sweet old couples who try to accommodate your needs as much as possible. They have old snowboards, skis and boots they used to rent out before. They offered to use them for free as long as we could. Sizes are limited so consider this as a complimentary service (おまけ) They also allowed a free 1-hour late checkout. They really try to make exceptions as long as it doesn't go against bothering other guests etc. 2. Facilities - a very well managed 2-story house. Clean rooms, beds, shared hot springs and our most favourite spot, the dining area. We sat in front of the fireplace (A GENUINE FIREPLACE) on the rocking chairs as long as we wanted to. There's a piano too where my friend played and the ownered didn't bother at all. 3. Food - nice and delicious homemade Japanese-Western meals. Dinner is course and you can order drinks including beer and wine. 4. Snowboarding - the house is located just 2-minute walk away from the Fujiwara ski resort. Honestly it's a very small ski slope with 3 lifts and is often recommended for families with kids. However if you're not a hardcore snowboarder or a beginner this place can be a small but nice half-day entertainment. There is also a Minakami Kogen ski resort which is 10-minute drive away and that's huge. Next time I wish to check out here. (The owner offered free shuttle to there!) Overall a great getaway experience and I would love to visit again! 本当にありがとうございました!
Cons: There is no convenience store nearby so you might want to bring some snacks before you arrive. (オーナーさん、ピーナッツ等のスナック系もミニバーで販売するのもいいと思います!) Hot spring is very hot so you'd want to add some cold water before you boil your legs.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were amazing! I recommend you go with the half board option, the food is so good (and the are no options close by for dinner). They drove us to Minakami Kogen the first night to have dinner, Minkami fujiwara ski resort is really close! Spent a day boarding there and then they arranged travel for us to Hodaigi ski resort (highly recommend this place! it has 6 lifts and ranges from beginners to advanced - plenty of restaurants there too). Their onsen is by far the best I have experienced to date.
