10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was very friendly and and helpful. He provided us a lot of information about the area. We stayed in the “moon villa”, very comfy, has everything you need. Would definitely come again!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent host, the best I've encountered. Ken was all smiles to welcome us despite us arriving very late at night. He was also super responsive in our communications prior to arrival. Upon arrival, he gave us a map of the local area and gave suggestions on places of attractions and recommended restaurants. The loft was spacious enough for six of us and spotless, with really nice touches of owl and cat decorations around the loft. If you have a car, it's only 2-3 minutes drive (or probably 10min walk) to the centre of town with plenty of restaurants, a supermarket and Family Mart. Super highly recommended.
Cons: Nothing!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner came to pick us all at the train station, explained in details the location including good restaurant for our diner. The house was independant with a view on a nice little garden that we unfortunately had not occasion to enjoy. We left the place after a night of snow which made the scene just great. We highly recommend the location and owner to anyone travelling in the region
Cons: Nothing

Cons: It would be better if the direction is clearly marked to the hotel.
10.0 Excellent

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great value , good location and wonderful service!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were beyond hospitable and offered to deliver our baggage to and from the train station. Even then, the walk was less than 15 minutes, a great way to start and end the day in such an idyllic place. In addition, the Japanese-style breakfast was very good and well worth it! The WiFi was fast, the room heating worked well, and room very clean. I would love to stay here again.
Cons: The bathroom was a bit chilly but not a problem at all!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's great to sleep on tatami mats and take a bath in the furo. The price is hard to beat, and the owner is very friendly. The breakfast was delicious, and it's a short walk to Nikko Tobu station.

Pros: Amazing japanese style breakfast. A unique, very hospitable lady introducing a homely atmosphere, a nice and helpful host who drove us with luggage to the station early in the morning.

Pros: Keiko and Shizuo almost treated me like their son! Very authentic Japanese inn feeling, really cool and a must-stay. He even drove me to and from dinner one night because it was really cold. They kept my room and the place sparkling clean, and I had every amenity I needed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: warm welcome ,great japanese room style , great service ,will come again soon
Cons: none
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Real Ryokan home experience. Live in tatami room, sleep on futon beds, try Japanese breakfast (btw: inform host at least two days before your stay about breakfast)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hosts (an old couple) are extremely friendly and helpful. They offered shuttle services (for guests and/or luggages) from the train stations. The room is authentic japanese style, very clean and cozy. Other areas in the house are also clean and well taken care of. You can buy beer or ice cream from the freezer in the house with resonable price. We did enjoy our stay at the place and would recommend to anyone.
Cons: It is in a quiet residential area, so make sure you get something to eat at the train station.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic place to stay with really friendly owners! The two hot spring baths were an absolute pleasure to look at and use and just perfect after a cold day walking about.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast super yummy and fresh...location very near to old town and easy find the restaurant ( Must self-drive)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was great, location was great (not stuck in the middle of the tourist area). There are enough things within walking distance so that a car wouldn't be needed, but renting a car certainly gives a lot more flexibility. The bathing facilities are quite nice. The staff is quite nice.
Cons: The in-room bathrooms are old and need updating (they are your typical 80s era prefabricated bathroom boxes). The bathrooms are also frigid cold during the winter since there is an exhaust that cannot be closed. The rooms themselves are fair to fine, but would be overall much nicer if the bathrooms were updated. The bathing facilities seem to be in heavy use during high season, so when the use indicator light turns off, you kind of need to make a mad dash before someone else enters (there are two private bathing rooms). Some sort of time limit might be good to implement, or scheduling system. Parking lot is teeny and make require tandem parking. Not sure if they hang onto keys if someone gets blocked in.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing staff, they were super friendly and the manager even offered us a ride to the temples. The onsen was great and also the food. We had a wonderful time.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: A good place to stay when visiting Nikko. It is close to the World Heritage temples and bean curd skin restaurants. The waterfall is about 30 mins away. The breakfast is excellent.
Cons: My tatami room was a little small for 4 people. The bathroom’s fan was not very strong and it didn’t remove the moisture fast enough.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Revage was beautiful and the staff were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished we could have stayed longer.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff. We were even driven to the train station when we left. The Onsen was very nice and clean and availability was good. Very big breakfast consisting of a good mixture of Japanese and International food. We walked from the hotel to the temples (1,5km). As the bus stop for the bus to the mountain areas is close to the hotel we could even combine both in one (long) day.
Cons: Price was rather high due to National holiday and the bathroom/shower rather small, but the Onsen made up for it.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Private onsen rooms. Great staff. Nice yukatas. Was shuttled to the restaurant for dinner one night. Good value for the price.
Cons: The location is farther and buses do not very frequently in the evening. The pillows are hard but it seems to be common in Japan. The bathroom didn't have the Japanese toilet and since the bathroom is not heated the warm toilet seat would have been really nice.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing fresh quality food at Breakfast. Private onsen was great specially when you are not used to share with others. Space to have your own meals outside the room in the common area.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: They have a open fire in the main dining room for the winter and a piano (ask for use). Also, the private onsens are big enough for 3 - 5 people, it's super comfortable and there is an outdoor area. And most importantly, Kento-san and Kono-san are really welcoming. They ensured we knew where the great spots were and always had heatpacks ready for us before we went out.
Cons: There was really nothing we didn't really like about this awesome place! The bathroom was a bit small but very much the same throughout all of japan.

Pros: The couple who owns the guesthouse were very generous and helpful. They gave great advice on things to do in Nikko, and they made sure we had everything we needed. The guesthouse is also conveniently located near the train and bus stations.
Cons: Because it is a traditional Japanese-style guest house, some parts of the house were cold. However, the bedrooms, shower area, and dining area had heaters, which made them nice and cozy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff and guests are all nice, warm and friendly. The hostel is conveniently located along the main road of the tourist sites and in between the Tobu and JR train station. Shinkyo Bridge is a walking distance; there is a public bath a block way. Staff are very helpful in assisting you plan your day. Shou out to Yoko, Yuko amd Kumiko for their hospitality.
Cons: Nothing. It truly feels like being a guest in s friend's home.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hosts were very kind, and gave us advice on where to visit (in Japanese). It was surprisingly close to the big local Temples and Shrines. The house was very charming and comfortable.
Cons: It might be more difficult to get here without a car. Definitely more of a Bed and Breakfast than a traditional hotel or lodge (complimentary tea and coffee, but no meals).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Owner Ken & his mother Michiko were super nice. I forgot something, and they went out of their way to contact and make sure I picked it up. Also, gave me some of their homemade good to try. Owls and decorations are cute.

Cons: Only one bathroom for 11 people and the owner. Not possible to leave your bag after the check out. Cold in the bathroom and corridors.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is quite far but Ken drived us to the station and helped us send our luggages over there, that was very kind of him. The house is new, bright and comfortable, like staying with a Japanese family.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Arrived and we were greeted by the hosts. There was a slight language barrier, but many efforts were made with a translation device to help out! The hosts were friendly, warm and extremely helpful. They made us feel at home almost instantly. We absolutely loved our stay. The house was clean, tidy and warm. The host drove us to the station at the cessation of our stay. We would most definitely recommend staying here. I informed the hotel this is my husband's first trip to Japan to celebrate his birthday. Cons: Nothing! The sulphur smell of the onsen water can be a shock to the system -- but it's the real deal.

Pros: Guest House Koundo is a clear 10 for us. It is actually even better than the pictures suggest. Very nice Japaneese style living. Comfortable beds. Very friendly and helpful host. 10 minute walking distance to the World Heritage sites (takes 4-5 hours to see all places). You can easily spend 2 days in Nikko. There are little shrines and temples all around. Must go to the nearby water fall abyss. Everything sooo unbelievably mystic and pretty.
Cons: Would have liked to spend at least one more day.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Our host was a wonderful and hospitable man. He speaks only a little bit of English, but he really tries to make you feel at home. We stayed as a family and had the whole first floor for ourselves. There was a very beautiful Japanse room, a comfortable bathroom and separate toilet and a decent bathroom. The rooms were spacious and had everything we needed. It was cold during our stay in Nikko, but the room was nicely heated. The hottub in the bathroom was really relaxing. Parking is in front of the property. Our host provided us with additional information about the area. Everything is in walking distance. There are a couple of restaurants nearby and a Lawsons with very friendly staff!
Cons: Depends on your expectations: Do not expect great luxury, but a really nice and cosy homestay. For us as a family with a small child (2-years-old) everything was perfect!
