I have stayed here many times over the last several years. The recent round of improvements have really made a difference. The rooms have seen significant improvements along with the lobby and common areas. Great value for the price!
My boyfriend and I visited the Orono area around the Fourth of July. He chose the hotel because of it's close proximity to the university campus. We LOVED the view from the hotel toward the river, the ability to walk downtown to restaurants and the SIP AND DIP! We chose to come back in early August, just to spend more time at the hotel and we plan on returning in November. Thanks for a great stay!
Clogged sinks, stained linen and curtains, sticky carpet, smashed bugs on the wall. ...are just a few things on our list. Everyday we were hoping the maid would take care of the dead bugs, everyday our hopes were crushed. We did ask to get our sinks fixed and the walls cleaned, never happened. \n\nStay somewhere else. \n
Overall, the place was shabby. Looked old and worn-out. Sheets were very thin and cheap. Shower water temperature fluctuated wildly from cold to scalding. On the positive side, the desk clerks were very friendly and helpful.
A second floor balcony view looking over the green lawn and Stillwater River into downtown Orono IS a travel poster. Location, location, and the true desire to please their guests. Ten years ago this was a cheap dump to stay a night. But the new owners have made it a class act! Three impressionist renderings of Boston have replaced faded flower prints in a room we've had before. The latest upgrade has changed the bathrooms from aged chipped tiled utilitarian to faux Traverteen floors with curved shower rods and color co-ordinated decorator shower curtains. The exhaust fan is more than sufficient to keep long steamy showers from sneaking into the room. The pride of ownership shows. Day or night, the staff (including the housekeeping staff) could not be more considerate and friendly. Wifi now works in the rooms, but there is still a lack of outlets for keeping the laptop and cell phone charged. At Christmas time you shouldn't miss the floor to ceiling Christmas tree which dominates the glass walled and sunlit lobby. Having 3 kids go through U Maine we have stayed in many of the Hotels in the Greater Bangor area over the last 10 years. This is our favorite.
I was visiting this site to make a reservation at the University Inn because my wife and I have stayed there many times in the past and have always had very pleasant stays. We are both retired and we do a lot travel around New England and unlike many of the places we stay, the University Inn just seems to have real character and class. We find it so much nicer than those cold and sterile 'big-box' hotels. The staff there is very friendly and we have never had any trouble with plumbing. I look forward to getting back to Maine and staying at this hotel.
This is a great hotel - with exceptional, and professional staff. Excellent facilities and a great fitness center. Very good breakfast. Overall, a very good experience and I highly recommend this hotel.
The Inn is older and it shows it, but it was also in a pleasant locale. I really enjoyed having a patio door open to the river and despite the age, it was cleaner than the Best Western, espcially the bathroom. I also loved the soaps, and the Internet connection was good . HOWEVER: they chose to cost-cut in all the wrong areas. 1. The shower didn't work properly. Despite remodeling the entire bathroom, they kept the old pullswitch linking shower and bathtub, and the valve was long since worn away. Half the water went to the showerhead; the rest just poured down the drain. And as other reviews have noted, the 'hot' water was a misnomer. Warm water, yes, and enough of it - just. You got the feeling that the owners were trying to save money by keeping you from a long shower. 2. Do NOT stay in a 'suite', unless there are no more than two of you and you are very, very loving. The double bed is just that, a double. Cozy spooning couples would probably be ok, but it was too small for us. And the sofa 'bed' needed to be dragged out and listed in the 'free' section of craigslist. There were springs missing, some of the supports were on the wrong side, etc. We just took the entire mattress out and put it on the floor. It helped - some. I took a suite because I wanted a coffee pot - full size: a detail I appreciate - and a fridge. If they'd just put these in every room I think it would be ok. Not doing so, and the meager breakfast, leaves you feeling cheapskated. I might maybe stay again, but not in a suite, and not without a coffee pot.
Plusses - Very courteus employee at front desk, TV worked satisfactorily, have VCR and videotapes you can borrow from front desk\n\nMinuses - Thin ceiling (you can hear people walking above you), too much water pressure from spigot of sink, hairs between toes when you walk on the carpet, tend to run out of milk, OJ, etc during breakfast because they are understafffed. The woman at the check-in desk is asked to wear too many hats.
Having a balcony overlooking the Stillwater is a photo-op. When the fog lifted, the river was idyllic looking. I benefitted from the renovations-in-progress, and was in a spacious 1/2 suite. It was well equipped with a refrigerator, coffee pot and supplies and more. Having stayed at the U Inn many times before, I noticed the new, organic type shower curtain and the Earth Simple shampoos, soaps, etc. The staff are all friendly and helpful. I appreciate the little gym where I can walk when the weather outside is forbidding (there's an outside pool, only, so no swimming when it's negative 20 degrees outside!) Even though workmen were working on renovations in many rooms at the Inn, I never heard them (they worked very quietly and did not disturb.)
Nice room, arrived a little late and everything was ready. Staff was very friemdly and helpful.\n\nRoom was nice and clean, bathroom fixtures were a little outdated and showed signs of wear but clean nontheless.\n\nBed very comfortable and room quiet. Great free breakfast. The only thing I really didn't care for was you had to use the public computer in the hotel lobby and couldn't use the WiFi in the rooms. otherwise would stay again if travelling to the same area.\n
Although the facilities were old, they were spotless and the staff was absolutely sine qua non. Friendly, helpful, warm, inviting. The attached restaurant (included) was fabulous for breakfast. On check in there was a tray of the best doughnuts. One could only quibble about the lack of updates and to do so would be a true shame as no staff tries harder! Well done!
Wonderful staff, choice of pillows, firm bed, hot breakfast Had some trouble with wifi in morning
Extremely friendly staff, impressive free breakfast
close to the shops no elevators
Consistently friendly clean and great breakfast
Always a great experience for us. They go out of their way for breakfast and social hour.
For an old motel they do a good job keeping it up. Friendly staff. Good breakfast and evening snacks. Good value. Not a new facility and rooms have not been remodeled. Bathrooms need a remodel.
Staff was friendly and beds comfortable Carpet in room could use a good cleaning. It seemed dingy.
We stayed in Bangor for one night on our way from Canada to Acadia National Park and were pleased with the hotel. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the staff was friendly.
This motel not listed in AAA book.
Very helpful and friendly staff. Facility has been renovated and is a great value for your money.
We checked in after midnight the front desk clerk was very helpful. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable.
Clean, comfortable, friendly staff, great price on Hotwire.
Location. FREE Shuttle to concert event! FREE Breakfast buffet was an outstanding amenity included in room rate. Quiet rooms, never heard anyone above or next door. WiFi coverage at corner rom was acceptable. Indoor pool was a bit chilly, supposedly is heated. Had only one coffee cup in room. Also no information in room on pool hours, restaurant menu and hours, location of vending and ice machines. Overall all, very minor. I found all I needed to know online. Will not hesitate to book again when in Bangor!
The hotel needed to be updated more. There was no place to plug in my cell phone or the extra chargers that we bought. Also a hit tub would of have been nice.
FREE WIFI, INDOOR POOL, FRONT DESK VERY HELPFUL... ROOM LARGE FOR TWO-TWO SINKS, NICE TOILET... COFFEE WAS WEAK...
I chose this hotel because they offer a free shuttle service to and from the concert. What a great service! We had dinner at the hotel restaurant - which was good. Free breakfast buffet in the morning. And free Wi-fi. Overall I'd recommend. Would stay here again. I don't like that the funds on my card were held twice (one as a pre-authorization and one for the settlement). The bed wasn't too comfy, but that's minor.
different from the typical chain hotels - felt more individual.Staff were very pleasant & concerned when I reported that Wi-Fi was not working properly in our room. Wi-Fi only worked just inside the door of our room - problem was reported to desk staff & they made note to contact their IT people.
Good location I do not understand why prices in Bangor are so high, I could get a suite in Vegas for the same cost.
In town, close to everything, but feels private and out of the way. Quiet, clean, great complimentary breakfast including hot food.
Its in a perfect location for my needs, traveling alone I feel completely safe. They have a great breakfast. The staff is very friendly and accommodating---

Convenient place to stay and we have been staying at the Country Inn for quite a few years. Not happy and probably will not stay at the Country Inn Bangor Maine again. In three nights we moved to 3 rooms. 2 rooms the air conditioner did not work. I saw a bedbug run across the counter. Bedbugs leave a residue along the bottom of the bed skirts. All 3 rooms which had 2 beds each had this trail the bedbugs leave.

The location was ideal, but its a very small town. It was dusty! The glass looked like someone licked all over it. We checked in with Logan - who was by himself and obviously freaking out with people in front of him and the phone ringing. We flew in for a 10 hour music event, so naturally myself and many others were going to check in after he concert. Shame on management to leave this guy hanging! He did a good job, I think he just was overwhelmed. Business section (printers) didn't work - they were repairing the front lobby with glue and clamps, it was a hot mess
My air connections were fouled up in Phoenix such that I was unable to make my prepaid reservation in Bangor--the Fairfield Inn could not have been more accommodating under this circumstance. Thanks.
I liked the convenient location, availability, and all the staff were very helpful. The bed was extremely hard, with only a sheet and a sheet cover, we never had a pillow topper and for the price we paid for our room the quality was not the best.
Nice breakfast setup and selection In room air conditioner was very quiet.
Comfortable beds, large clean rooms, friendly staff and close to the airport Huge over stuffed pillows. Bring your own pillow unless you like to sleep with your head crooked at a 45 degree angle. I still highly recommend this hotel. Everything else was great including a wonderful breakfast and warm and friendly staff.
Convenient to all Bangor Highlights, nice Staff and great buffet. TV system horrible, I just wanted to lay in bed after four hours at the casino and they had to move my room 3 x to get a working TV. No Pool....
Close to the airport By midnight around 4:00pm, awakened by next room guests! Not just they slammed the door, they also talk so loud and last for about 1/2 hour until we called the front desk to complain. Less choice for dinning during the weekday stay.
Staff did a great job. Beds were soft, uncomfortable. Walls thin, could hear tv and people in room next door. Noise from floor above was loud. Noise insulation not done well enough.
Hotel was nice, though perhaps a little pricey - especially if paying to stay at casino (see note on what I didn't like). Staff was efficient at checkin. Casino is small, slots seem generally older. Went on a Saturday night and it was pretty dead. Drinks were both bad and weak. Last call wasn't really a last call so much as an announcement of no more service as of that second. Then they actually walk around and collect your drinks. I felt like I was in the twilight zone - just a very strange (and not to be repeated) experience.
The shower was scalding intermittently. Be careful!!
Room was large and comfortable. Hotel clerk called our room thirty minutes after we arrived and we were just about asleep for an afternoon nap.
For what the room cost, I would have expected a lot more luxury from a casino hotel.room was below average, not comfortable. Lacked amenities. Hotel staff and snack bar staff was very good Restaurant food was terrible. Fish and chips was the worst I have ever had. Waiter wasn't knowledgeable regarding drink programs. Slot machines were lousy payouts. Too many penny machines and too many impossible machines. Buffett was too expensive @ $25. Didn't try it I question if this casino is going to survive. Not very busy for a Friday night.
The staff was friendly in all areas, Reception, Restaurants & Casino. There were cookies and flavored waters in the reception area. The hotel and rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable. We stayed at the hotel to see a show at the Cross Insurance Center, which was an easy walk right across the street. The rooms were very quiet and the views from the upper floors were terrific. We were disappointed that the Epic Buffet is only open on weekends, but we did know that ahead of time. There is no more cook to order breakfast for $9.99, instead there is a reasonably priced snack bar if you want breakfast, and it can be ordered as room service too. While the covered and enclosed parking is conveniently located right outside the doors of the lobby, it is also the Smoking Area. There is no way to avoid the clouds of smoke upon entering and leaving the hotel lobby. For a non smoking hotel, it's a terrible place for a smoking area unless you don't mind the smell of smoke on your clothes and in your hair.
I loved being close to everything
Clean Room Difficult parking. If traveling with kids, they make you sign a waiver to not leave them alone if under 16. This may put a damper on mom and dads plans to go to the casino.
We loved our room, except the a/c had problems. The staff was incredible. The Casino was really fun. We will definitely stay here again. The a/c in our room did not work right.
The room was fine. The staff was friendly. The doors slam when closing. Very noisy at night. The buffet in the casino is terrible. Cold food and low quality.
We got a great price on a room at the last minute and didn't expect it would be anything special. We were really pleased with the nice Maine woods decor, regional magazines in the room, and complimentary breakfast with make-your-own waffles with fresh blueberry sauce. Nice touches all around made this a very pleasant stay.
The people were friendly and helpfull. Curtious, Well.... I went to the desk the morning of our leaving. To ask if we were able to stay one more day. We were told that they were not able to let us stay in owe room. They apologized for that. So we went to howerd Johnson's the next night.
We checked in and the owner charged my debit card even though I already paid online.. she apologized and refunded but the charge is still "pending" 3 days later and the whole check in process was a mess, we get to our economy room and it reaks and has 4 flies the only upside was we asked the kind man at the front desk to switch and he let us Economy rooms smell have flies and are old and Not clean
Staff friendly. Rooms clean. Beds okay but softer than I like. Double bed rather than queen. Sagged in middle.
It was clean and the guy at the desk was friendly. It was over priced for what it was. It is old. It still uses regular keys. The room was a bit noisy when people were coming in late. I tried to cancel my reservation an hour after I made it and they wouldn't accommodate me.
Was clean, staff was courteous Not a good value. Food was not good. No info in room on surrounding area, restaurants etc
Staff is very fiendly Food is terrible
Easy access from the highway. Staff was nice and friendly. Asked for a quiet room but seemed to be directly across the hall from 2 couples that had 2 different rooms but enjoyed visiting each others room especially in the early am. Also bed was to soft for my liking but I didn't request anything special but wasn't asked either.
location noise level after 2am
Friendly staff, great price
Refrigerator, good tv and Internet, relatively quiet. Rooms are pretty small but well appointed.
Comparatively inexpensive, convenient to Downtown Bangor and airport, quiet and clean.
Beautiful hotel and not bad for the price, room was clean although smaller than expected, had to change rooms upon arrival due to strange heater / air conditioning noise in the ceiling of the first room. Breakfast was nice, but it gets over super early at 9:30 in the morning. Staff is fairly snooty, they act like this hotel is the four seasons, which is fairly laughable. If you smoke, be advised that the entire property is non-smoking, and staff will rudely tell you to leave the property. Yeah overall would have rated this hotel much higher if their staff had had any manners or tact. The hotel itself is very nice, but the basic king suite is much smaller than it looks in the photos.
Beautiful view. Comfy gas fireplace. Relaxing whirlpool bath. Large room. Terrific restaurant! (Salmon for dinner.) Friendly and helpful staff (Andre) Nice breakfast. Quiet. Windows needed cleaning. Clock wasn't plugged in. Would have been nice to have been able to check in at Sunday brunch.
The scaene, the view, the restaurant, the bar, the warm welcoming environment
The gas fireplace in a $99 room was a happy surprise chimney was noisey due to a wind storm....
Capacious rooms with views over the lake and rolling countryside, within an old inn that has been tastefully renovated and extended. The dining room is of high quality and there is an excellent wine list. The hotel is well located to visit Bangor, Brewer and their surrounds, as well as providing easy access to Bar Harbour and the Arcadia National Park, Bucksport, Belfast and Camden. Antique shops of varying quality are common throughout the region during summer months and well worth a visit. Although not experienced during our stay, the inn is a popular venue for weddings and the associated receptions. These could adversely affect the enjoyment due to the impact on the kitchen and the associated noise.
The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The inn was very quiet and quaint. We really enjoyed our stay. No.
Beautiful, peaceful location, charming inn, warm and inviting gourmet restaurant on site.
Lobby & Bar Some of the decor
Cool character, has an older boarding house feel. Excellent place to spend a night or two if you want to be in the middle of it all. Not a chain, it is everything they are not, both in good and bad ways. Warm room, too warm even with the ac on.
