10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing home stay with a super nice local family. Surrounded by nature, with a beautiful view of the volcano from the incredible treehouse (especially at night when you can see shades of red in the sky!) Plenty of excursions to do, guided by the lovely Kathlyn and the local kids! One of the best memories of our lives. Highly recommended if you want to disconnect from the world and experience the real local way of life of Tanna. Thank you John, Nancy, Kathlyn, Rexxlin and Daniel. We'll be back! :)
Cons: That we couldn't stay longer!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This guesthouse is unbelievable. Positioned right in front of the Volcano. At night you can see the volcano glowing and you can hear it rumbling. You truly feel like you are in a lost world. Per se, the guest house is a wonderful place and John, Lerina and Nancy attend to your every need. Rooms are kept extremely clean, clean sheets pillow and towels are provided. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that rooms are cleaned daily. Electricity is available 24h (usb charger in the room for phones and ac charger in the kitchen), as well as running water. The flushable toilet and shower are kept extremely clean. It is incredible to see what John has been able to create in the middle of the jungle. Lerina and Nancy cook delicious meals in huge portions! I cannot recommend this place enough. I went to see the volcano 3 times. Twice for sunrise (get ready to wake up at 3am-SO WORTHY) and one sunset. Sunrise was by far my favorite since you are in complete darkness in front of the rumbling fiery chasm. Sunset can be busy. One of the two sunrise tours had me visiting the volcano alone... just me and the guide. Make sure you go see cultural dances and the hot springs. I recommend visiting the hot springs in the evening when the water is high enough to soak and you can look at the glowing volcano while frolicking in the warm water. Make sure you walk around the villages adjacent the guest house. People will welcome you. One thing of note, Tanna has no snakes, poisonous animals or insects. You can walk in the jungle with no fear of strange encounters... Make sure you get enough cash in pt Vila (ATMs in Tanna can be a hit or miss) and enough bottled water from town. One suggestion: please take ALL plastic back with you to town and get rid of on your way to the airport when you deparr. You will notice the absence of litter and plastic in general in the jungle, villages and everywhere in the east part of Tanna.
Cons: Nothing, I loved everything
9.5 Excellent
Pros: John and his family are simply amazing. They will do anything to turn your stay into a long lasting memory of good moments. A jungle bungalow with a heart. Warmly recommended !
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The tree house was a great experience. It’s close enough to walk to the volcano entrance, however with no road signs on the way, it’s important to have someone go with you. It was interesting hearing about cyclone Pat and this business is a way of helping support the village. The kumala pancakes were tasty!
Cons: An outdoor sitting area where we could read a book and look at the surroundings and relax would be great.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I'm so glad I stayed here. I stayed a few other places in Vanuatu and no other place gave me such valuable experiences. Staying at Volcano Eco Treehouse was a rich cultural experience. All the other places I stayed were so disconnected and generic but at the Treehouse I was invited to be part of and learn about Vanuatu culture and consequently, I had very memorable experiences with Ni-van people. I didn't feel like a tourist. Everything was so genuine and sincere. John was an excellent host. When I changed my mind on things at the last moment, when I had special requests I asked him to help me with (drinking Kava on top of the volcano at sunrise is something very special), John would help me graciously. I advise if you want to do resorts in Vanuatu, at least stay here for a few days to have a real, authentic and memorable experience.
Cons: Though it's super safe and well-constructed, when the wind blows, the Treehouse is maybe not for everyone.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Family was extremely accommodating and the homemade local food was delicious and abundant. John was able to organise many trips for us so that we could experience the local culture and sights.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: John’s family and the views to the volcano
Cons: You need a car for pretty much everything (and to pay for it)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I could see the volcano from my treehouse, it’s incredible. The staffs are too nice, especially Lerina, we have become best friends with each other!
Cons: There are quite a lot insects, but that’s totally understandable for me. If you want to live in the deep jungle, you will have to deal with it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Warmest, most helpful hosts imaginable. The tree house with the view of the volcano was magical. Wish we could have stayed forever!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and inviting hosts. John and the tribe made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Fantastic location, within walking distance of the volcano so you avoid the steep transfer cost of getting there.
Cons: The cold showers take some getting used to.
Friendly Beach - Tanna - Bedroom
2
8.3 Excellent (46 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Friendly Beach in Tanna Island, you'll be on the waterfront, just steps from Friendly Beach and a 4-minute drive from Sulphur Bay. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available on request).
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Food, scenery, staff were all amazing and also liked the geckos
Cons: Nothing really. Worth the expense for a once in a lifetime experience
4.3 Okay
Pros: The darkness at night as there was no light pollution, being a pacific island. A small complex. Proximity to volcano
Cons: PLEASE READ Airport transfer: in the back of an open deck ute/truck to sit on a wooden plank seating for the hour and a half trip. Not suitable for anyone who couldn't climb up. Advertised as: "luxury eco-stay" and this transfer was only suitable for fit and able bodied. Rubbish piled on beach and dumped within metres of units!! Toilets are not eco-friendly as they just drain into sea from cesspit. Food: over priced and no choices. Access to volcano: you must use and pay extra to friendly beach to get to volcano (was extra to the trip). Sadly we had 10,000 vatu from our room and was not acknowledged by the Owner as a customer service issue. :(
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The experience at the end of the world was amazing. Lack of internet was a bonus. Luxury bed under a mosquito net with the tropical breeze coming through the louvres. The hammock was great. Food good home cooked but maybe a little pricey. A wonderful stay on a great island with very friendly and helpful staff Nice and close for the visit to Mt Yasur, definitely one for the bucket list.
Cons: The coral on the bathroom floor was a little harsh without jandels! Maybe one more bulb would have helped.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely loved our stay at friendly beach
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very caring staff. We felt more than welcome. Very cosy beach houses. Volcano is nearby.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff very kindly and helpfull. Gogos local food.
Cons: À little expensive.
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Refer below
Cons: DO NOT stay here. You will have noticed that the room rates here are 4 to 5 times the prevailing rates at lodges nearby. Why? This lodge is owned by an expatriate in Port Vila and the monies generated do NOT directly benefit the local community. While locals are employed here, the vast majority of the revenue goes straight into the pocket of a greedy, ignorant expatriate. Those employed here frequently claim they have 'communication difficulties' between owner and lodge. This is patently false. I was not picked up at the Airport as requested, the Manager was rude when I eventually met him (despite my politeness), facilities are virtually non existent, location is 45 minutes from the Volcano along a VERY rough road and the beach in front of the lodge is far from clean and definitely not impressive. I implore you to stay at one of the Lodges near the Volcano as I eventually did. There are quite a few to choose from, they are owned by local families and your monies will directly benefit them.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Once we made it to Tanna, we were picked up by the manager Greg at Tanna airport we were transported through to the amazing, raw and beautiful east side of Tanna. Friendly Beach is situated in a remote and secluded part of Tanna close to the volcano. Yet far enough away and on a beach front so you don't get affected by the ash clouds. You really step back into timelessness and raw nature at Friendly Beach. And the villages you pass along the way through jungle scape is truly special. Once you adjust to the slow Island pace, the staff - especially Joyce - are absolutely lovely and most helpful. There is a lively coral reef right in your front garden but finding a calm enough day to swim doesn't always happen. Tanna is a recovering small community of 30,000 people after Cyclone Pam in 2015. So people are struggling but also joyful, friendly and embracing of tourists. All tourism ventures are networked and all know each other and contribute to a community recovery fund to rebuild. Friendly Beach is part of that network and were able to organise every tour and all transport easily. We had a small mishap when I left my bag in the tour car at a beach and a small amount of money went missing from my bag. A few locals had gathered around the car so it was impossible to discern who was responsible. When I later informed Joyce and Greg at Friendly Beach after discovering the amount gone they spoke with the tour driving company who were so upset that this had happened and wanted to take full responsibility for not locking the car and they went out of their way to refund the money out of their own pots. I ended up giving half back as I was so grateful for their honesty and effort to make sure we didn't have a bad experience. This is how Tanna works. Seeing Tanna through the eyes of Friendly Beach is an experience not to be missed. It is the real deal!
Cons: The communication and subsequently information provided prior to arriving was sorely lacking from management. It is easy to get upset with Greg and Joyce on arrival, but we learned they rely on communication and booking details from a third party in Port Vila and the owner who lives in Australia. They got no information about our booking till the day before our arrival and I had been sending emails for weeks with questions about payment and tour costs and options with only one reply. This seriously hindered our ability to plan how much cash to bring and whether credit card could be used as Tanna is quite remote. If you don't bring cash you will not be able to pay at the volcano entrance. Communication on this side needs to be improved or not being able to plan small details can spoil your entire trip. We were lucky to have researched with Tanna Adventures who provided a lot more information about what to expect during your stay in Tanna generally. Once there, specific information or descriptions on various tours was not readily forth coming or provided so we fumbled through and it was hit and miss. The Day tour and the Yasur tours are MUST dos! Goes without saying. We got convinced to do Blue Hole and not Blue Cave which was a mistake. And safety advice is something that would help so you know to bring reef shoes to some locations or even snorkels. A few reef cuts were minor irritants when walking a lot. We felt a bit blind about what to expect on each tour and unprepared without much useful information. Our advice... transport is expensive from one side of the island to the other so it is worth staying at more expensive resorts and doing tours on the other side of the island from there.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly hosts and staff. very authentic, beautiful and natural environment.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was wholesome and delicious - fresh, local produce and a different dish for every meal. The staff were super friendly and we were made to feel right at home. The accommodation was comfortable whilst being in the traditional style. The volcano tour is a must - absolutely spectacular!
Cons: Having to leave and say goodbye!
White Grass Ocean Resort - Tanna - Building

8.0 Excellent (185 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Tanna Island, White Grass Ocean Resort is by the ocean, within a 15-minute drive of Lowanatom Church and Lenakel Port. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, multilingual staff, and luggage storage. A roundtrip airport shuttle is complimentary (available 24 hours).
7.0 Good
Pros: Location and outdoor area were nice
Cons: Owner of the resort did not treat the staff nicely. And the owner also didn’t treat us respectfully, don’t really know if it was because we didn’t look like the average guests for that specific resort (we were 2 young women) or because we booked our stay through booking.com since it gave us a cheaper proce per night compared to what we were told at the reception. But if the management doesn’t accept people booking through this site then they shouldn’t be on it. All in all, the staff was really nice but our encouter with the owners ruined our stay for us and it felt like a waste of money. Staff seemed to be sort of terrorized by the owners, too because every single response from staff members had to go through owners and they didn’t seem to be enjoying their job because of that.
7.0 Good
Pros: Closer to swimming pool #1
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The resort setting, the staff, the food and the prices.
Cons: Riding in the back of a pickup truck for airport transfers.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: White Grass is a lovely comfortable resort in a remote location. Food was all of high standard, staff very helpful and professional.Beds comfortable. It is expensive to holiday in Vanuatu, but no complaints about the resort itself. Great that vouchers for snorkelling at Blue Hole No 2 were included, especially for a family. Take note of tide times as snorkelling there is really only possible at low tide. About an hour and a half from the volcano over some rough roads. Location very convenient for airport.
Cons: Resort was great. Tours are on Tanna are expensive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was amazing, food from the restaurant was tasty, lots of tours to choice from. The jetty out to the reef was awesome, amazing snorkelling with heaps of live coral. landscaping around the resort was stunning.
Cons: menu needs a little more choice. We'll for me anyways, due to seafood allergy. Did go up to Evergreen one night to try out and found they had a lot more to choice from.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Location was like a lost world paradise, beautiful views and walking paths. Friendly staff and a great vibe around the resort. I had the best facial, wonderful day spa. Great food too.
Cons: Room could have used a bit more storage for unpacking.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Near to the airport. Around 2 hours from Yasur! The room was great. The food in the restaurant was ok!
Cons: The staff in the restaurant was not so polite and helpful!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff will help you plan and arrange everything you want to do on Tanna. Good location 5 minutes from the airport. Plenty of activities no matter what you’re into. Food was excellent. It is a bit pricy but for the location and convenience I think it’s a great deal.
Cons: Food is a bit overpriced and since there are no shops near by your choice is limited.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location the gardens and resort are spectacular loved my stay. Thanks too for sorting out an alternative when the internet went down so I wouldn’t be charged a credit card surcharge. Very appreciated.
7.0 Good
Pros: Food is good but need more variety
Cons: Feel boring about the food and no where to go, most of the resort have free shuttle bus

A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
7.0 Good
Pros: The place is beautiful The bungalows are simple but sufficient It was possible to have diner
Cons: I felt like i had to pay the tourist price for transfer (5000) compared to the normal price (2500 vanu). I felt a bit left alone with the organisation service. I had to ask for everything for activities and transfert...I didn’t feel like I was well taken care of. The toilets in my bungalow were dirty.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Thank you Mike, Lina and the kids for a great time. The room was perfect, the food was delicious.
Cons: Not a criticism of the property but transfers around the island are very expensive.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location and experience of bungalow in "rough countryside"
Cons: The lighting/electricity supply was erratic. My room light never worked.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The garden surrounds were lovely. The view of the volcano especially at night was beautiful. Breakfast was good.
Cons: The bungalow had gaping holes which let in freezing cold air at night, rats and spiders.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you are the outdoors traveling type need or require minimal facilities and minimal amenities then this is a great place. If you require any niceties then I don't recommend it. I personally enjoyed it for the simplicity and peaceful tranquility and the views.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Nice view on the volcano. The ash planes are in the walking distance, you can have a nice walk up to the seaside, which is great.
Cons: It didn’t work well for me. The attitude towards me was very... specific. The breakfast is at 7. I got to the kitchen at 7 and got a cup of hot water, after which Lena has disappeared. I waited for 50 minutes and no breakfast. It’s among other things, which I don’t want to mention. Although I noticed a very different attitude towards some other guests. Maybe they didn’t like me personally or they don’t like French in general. Unacceptable attitude in the hotel business. Wouldn’t recommend.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Mike and Lena were very accommodating and arranged transfers and a day trip for us. Basic accommodation with native building techniques which has an authetic feel and is a great experience. Great location for the volcano and prices were fair.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The food was fantastic with great hospitality. I stayed in the bungalow with an ensuite shower which was modern, clean and great for when you come back from a busy day exploring. Great views of the volcano. Highly recommend
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Family of Mike welcomed us awesomely warm, they made sure that we enjoyed our stay. Mike is a wonderful Tourguide who knows the traditions of Tanna and did the best to teach us the island lifestyle. We very much appreciate his effort to make sure we had a wonderful time. As Tanna is still struggling with cyclone Pam in 2015, we are happy to support his family and community with our stay in his bingalow. We will definitely come back if we are back in Vanuatu one day! But please note, that as Tanna is a small island and transportation is very complicated, you can not expect "european comfort". Though we loved the authentic stay in that totally peaceful and wonderful place!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location - a little bit remote in the jungle but not far from the volcano entrance. Absolute peace, no tourists. Awesome view from the bungalow on the volcano.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The bed was a little uncomfortable The bathroom was was basic as expected
Cons: hot water for the shower Susan's cooking produced a tasty meal and gave us good insight to the style of living of the people The view across to the volcano was magnificent
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great view of vulcano, nice village and adventures drive. Very accommodating and friendly host.
Cons: Long drive from the airport, but it was fun
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The food was amazing Marta is a fantastic cook and host.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The view of the volcano and the setting is to die for! The huts are in lush, beautiful gardens and there are lovely surrounding walks and an accessible village down the road. The staff were very friendly and helpful and Martha was a mine of valuable information. We loved it here and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would totally recommend it providing you are not expecting luxury.
Cons: The access road is a real adventure! The drivers were very skilled though. The huts and facilities are basic but clean and serviceable.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The wonderfull view and the reasonable food.
Cons: The room, the bed, the wc. We got the worst room, the others looked a little better. The wc was very far, even tough the booking said that the room had a closet. The transport from airportwas really very expensive.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location ( volcano view from the room). Friendly staff (Marta & the driver)
Cons: There was no fan in the room. No hot water for shower
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The views of the jungle and volcano
Cons: The staff was not friendly, specially Martha, the manager. The only bathroom in the property was disgustingly dirty and unconveniently far from the bungalows. No electricity. No internet although booking.com says it does. In the middle of nowhere, literally. You cannot walk anywhere.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic views. Very good traditional cooked meals. Friendly staff.
Cons: 4wd trek up to get to accommodation (but that could be part of the adventure)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I had a room which looked straight out to the volcano and it was brilliant. The room was simple but very comfortable, there were no bugs and not having electricity was no inconvenience. They have a solar bank if you get desperate to charge your phone. It is a lovely, secluded spot about a 30min walk from the volcano entrance.
Cons: This is a cultural thing but no one does anything nice for you for free. The walk from the lodge to the volcano is really straightforward and to save money I decided to walk rather than use the expensive transport services. The lodge staff offered to walk with me and the 2 other guests also walking and later charged me 1000vatu for a 'guided tour'. It's 1500vatu for transport so this was disappointing to be charged for a service I didn't need and that ate out of my budget. Otherwise it was brilliant.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Nice view of the vulcano, friendly staff, really good food, spacious room, clean and comfortable. We had a good time

7.0 Good
Pros: The food was plenty and Nancy made a very delicious coconut jam! The location is just perfect! At night you could see the light of the volcano behind the trees! We enjoyed going with the family to church on Sunday, such an authentic experience! The location is just perfect, only a short walk to Black Sand Beach and the Hot Spring and a little bit further was a really nice village and Whites Beach. Great for snorkelling! :)
Cons: The shower could have had a bit more water pressure.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We had an amazing time at Tanna Dream bungalow. We traveled with our 2 kids, young adults 19 and 14 years old, and they loved it. Dream bungalow is very well placed not far from the Volcano, the Hot springs and close to White Beach in Port Resolution with amazing views on the valley, the mountains and lights from the Volcano at night! It will take you 2.5h drive from the airport to arrive there, Sam will pick you up at the airport and drive you on a bumpy road to the bungalows, driving through the ash plain ... Kids at the back of the pick up, the adventure can start ! Of course comfort is basic as you will only get water and electricity 2 hours a day, there is no shop in Port resolution but the bungalows, toilets, showers...are very clean. Nancy will cook diner and breakfast for all and you will enjoy spending some time with the family. They will show you where to go during the day, Sam drove us back to the amazing ash plain to take some photos and ...you will just relax ! Sam and Nancy are great hosts but remember to bring cash, there is no ATM on this side of the island ! Enjoy
