Vicksburg National Military Park
Warren County Courthouse
Rather than stay at a chain hotel, I decided to take my kids to Duff Green on the way home from PCB. Restored beautifully and accurately, the mansion stands as a physical embodiment of the antebellum and civil war south. Looking down from the second story balcony on Vicksburg, I could almost see guests and family arriving by horse drawn carriage and hear the cries of excitement from the Green children as they swept up the drive. The tour after our quiche and delicious biscuit breakfast was excellent and brought to life the personal and tragic side of our civil war. My children and I are changed for the better after our brief stay. We arrived late at night, just past 11 pm. It's near a poor part of town in the historic district and several locals were loitering about, but, as we crossed Locust street onto the mansion grounds, all was well. No issues whatsoever, but try to arrive in the light of day.
Breakfast and owner/cook very good and friendly. He ate breakfast with us and had informative conversations. Bed was comfortable, plenty of towels to use. You could tell the owners tried to please the clients, judging by the decor they used. A train came through about every hour during the night. Very loud, but we got used to it, no problem. Television very small [15"], but OK, did not spend much time watching TV.
