9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff super helpful, clean and comfortable
Cons: Breakfast and dinner are not available at the property
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hosts are lovely and very welcoming from the moment they met us up at Yudanaka Station. Traditional Japanese breakfast was excellent and Snow Monkeys are a must do visit. Hot springs bath was a wonderful experience. All the community came together for the evening festival in the narrow alleys and the Ryokan’s and hospitality opened up to reveal their beauty and everyone was so friendly.
Cons: Nothing, we enjoyed every moment of our 2 days/nights.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location is perfect to do the 9 Shibu Onsen Bath Houses Tour; no. 3 is just outside (back entrance). They have free coffee from 7-10 am, it was really good, even more so than regular hotel coffee. They have a free shuttle bus departing from Yudanaka Station, you just have to let them know the time you're arriving. The only thing I would lightly complain is the price, but as I have experienced, in little towns across Japan accommodation is usually a little bit more expensive that in cities.
Cons: -
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owners are very nice and helpful. You can check with them the transfer from the train station to the ryokan The town is very nice to walk and see the public onsens
Cons: The room was really large, but not too clean. It was full of stuff inside.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This beautiful little onsen village is only 5 minutes drive from the monkey park. The ryokan has its own private onsen but they give you a key to visit the 9 others in town. Loved this place and the little bars and friendly people.
Cons: A little expensive but worth it for the extras including lifts from the owner.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great little ryokan with very friendly owners. Complimentary coffee and free parking was nice. Good wifi. Amazing indoor and outdoor onsen! Loved it!
Cons: We loved everything!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The use of 2 private onsens, both were empty every time we used. The outside one was the nicest Onsen we had been in with great surroundings. The staff were fantastic, they picked us up from the station and took us to the monkey park and back. They recommended and took us to the sake museum. Comfortable Yukatas were provided. Large room in traditional Japanese style.
Cons: The pillow was uncomfortable, I’m not sure if this is traditional Japanese? On a couple of occasions we could smell of smoke coming from neighbouring rooms which was not pleasant.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable traditional Japanese inn (ryokan). The hosts are extremely pleasant and friendly. They offer to pickup/drop off at the local train station as well as the monkey park. Would definitely stay here again.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Adequate facilities with spacious room. Owner is happy to shuttle guests to/from Snow Monkey Park. A must do. Convenient location to restaurants, shopping, and 9 free public baths.
Cons: No water kettle in room.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: -Room: when you open the window you will see a Mountain View, the Japanese room is very big and it is very clean. -Food: you have a private dinning room for breakfast and dinner. For the food, it is very delicious and have appetizer, main dish and many more. -onsen: In the room, it has Yukata for you to wear to the onsen. At the onsen, the water is very hot and clean.
Cons: Nothing, the hotel is perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was excellent! As I have no Japanese at all, there is of course always the element of bewildering communication when you chose a genuinely Japanese stay, but the super friendly staff was always extraordinarily helpful. Breakfast was brilliant! A genuine Japanese Onsen experience!
Cons: My stay was just perfect, I cant find anything I would improve on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very nice and food was excellent
Cons: Rooms weren’t as modern as the corridors and shared areas, but were clean
8.3 Excellent
Pros: An opportunity to experience traditional Japanese custom and service.
Cons: Nothing in particular
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully located
Cons: Nothing we did not like
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was clean. Staff was friendly. Spa was great.
Cons: There was nothing I disliked.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had to get a box breakfast, because we went skiing the next day! Everything was setup already a BENTO BOX TO GO. It was so delicious and fresh. Thank you.
Cons: Nothing, the whole experiences was a memorable stay from the warm welcome, to the onsens, dinner in our private room and all of the fun stuff we came across during our stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the room, meals, facilities and most importantly the service! Conveniently located to the public onsens as well. Will be back again! :)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful Onsen, in a superb location. Access to the public spa's with the master key provided. Reasonable rooms in the traditional style but could do with a spruce up (may only apply to part of the building, other rooms seem to have been refurbished). Staff were welcoming intially.
Cons: In hindsight overpriced. We had very little sleep the second evening as a party was taking place another room nearby (until 3am). The night caretaker did his best to quiet them down, but the main staff the next morning didn't seem bothered. Disappointment was compounded by the fact that they were unable to accommodate our small bags for even half an hour while we took a last walk around the town at 10am checkout (only time in Japan we were unable to leave our bags). Had to ask for water to be changed in the room on the second day, didn't experience any of the little touches as described by other reviewers. Maybe we were unlucky.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Extremely friendly and caring host.. Authentic Japanese atmosphere. Very clean indoor onsen and sauna with a beautiful view. Awesome Japanese breakfast. The owners picked us up from the train station on the day of arrival. Next day they took us to the Snow Monkey Park with their car for absolutely no charge. And finally brought our laggage to the train station at the day of departure We had a great stay. Thank you!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Once we got our bearings, we could walk into town very easily and of course up to Shiba Onsen too. We loved the attention to detail that this special small guest inn offered, and our wonderful hosts at Yudanaka Yasuragi provided an authentic and memorable Japanese experience that we will forever cherish. Our special dinner for my teenage boys and myself was amazing, and our hosts are truly gorgeous special people. I would love to revisit, and would recommend others to stay. Our visit to Yudanaka was an absolute highlight of our Japan trip.
Cons: Yudanaka Yasuragi offers traditional Japanese futons, pillows and room furniture, so it's not always comfortable for international visitors. We didn't mind for the two nights we stayed as it was all part of the adventure.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice and helpfull owners. The dinner was very good!
Cons: Nothing!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The food here is excellent and good value for what you get, I would definitely recommend requesting meals.
Cons: Although Yudanaka is quiet in the off season, staff will recommend and assist in finding local Onsen and the monkey park, and will happily drive you to spots in the local area, including train station pick up and drop off.

Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, express check-in, and express check-out. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff and the premises were just outstanding! I had stayed in this area 2 years ago at a different inn but tried this one via Booking.com because it was easy to make reservations. The staff spoke English and was absolutely the most friendly and genuinely happy to have us there. The even loaned us boots to use for our trek up to see the snow monkeys so our shoes wouldn't be ruined by the mud. The facilities are located all on one floor which is really nice and the food was outstanding. It's located right outside the monkey park and they picked us up with their van from the train station and gave us a ride back the next day as well. They gave each of us a photo of us dressed in the yukatas plus souvenir chopsticks. We were 5 women and we stayed for hours in the open air onsen (bath) while the snow fell around us; just breath taking! I cannot recommend this place enough. This was the best hotel stay on our 10 day trip to Japan.
Cons: Nothing could have made this any better. It was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Literally a little slice of heaven. The family who run this place run it with so much passion and love, and it really shows. Nothing is too much trouble and they have preempted your every need. We came unprepared for walking in the snow and they loaned us snow boots which made a huge difference to safety and comfort. The meals are lavish and you can taste the care and skill that has gone into every little dish. Also the apple beef is out of this world. The luxury really is in the details. Third visit back and hopefully many more to come. We always leave with a heavy heart.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful stay. Staffs were so friendly and nice! Felt just like home. Perfect place for people who enjoy food and quality time!
Cons: None.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything!
Cons: If possible you can set up a small shop to sell local attractions or Onsen related recommendations
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The entire onsen ryokan was extremely clean, comfy and had a great layout. Rooms were spacious and the bathroom which includes a private hot spring was awesome. The two meals, dinner and breakfast that comes with the booking were delicious and every dish was made delicately. The staff were ultra friendly and would do their best to make sure our stay and getting there was as easy as possible.
Cons: One of the clear broth soup they served was definitely on the saltier side and was a taste my wife couldn't get used to, otherwise, everything else served was great! This is a personal taste preference issue and not anything to take points away from Jinpyokaku. The open air hot spring can definitely be hotter but this is due to weather. When we stayed, it was snowing with temperature ranges around -3 degrees celsius.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location and privacy of this facility. Super attentive staff and impeccable service by the entire team. Excellent transport provided by this Ryokan. Food prepared by the lady owner was top notch!
Cons: Nothing.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Amazing Onsen, outstanding breakfast and dinner, among the best we’ve ever had at a Ryokan.
Cons: A bit of a rough welcome when my email informing them that we were 2 adults and 2 kids was overlooked and they were upset with me for being 4 people. But they recovered quickly with typical Japanese graciousness and hospitality so the stress soon passed.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Delicious food and lovely, helpful staff.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was impeccable and the staff was very friendly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's definitely a bit of a ways to reach the location but it was well worth the trip. We stayed for 2 nights and wish we could have stayed longer. It's a great location to visit the monkey park and there are a few things within walking walking distance (we visited the sake museum and a small restaurant for a local beer). We booked the room with the semi outdoor onsen which was lovely to have in the room. We didn't even have time to use the public onsen on the property but i hear it is quite nice as well. The staff was lovely, the food for breakfast & dinner was great, the room was very spacious and clean and its so quiet and peaceful. The futons looked funny to begin with but were so comfortable. I would go back again in a heartbeat and stay longer next time.
Cons: Nothing!

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely facility. Spotlessly clean. Fantastic staff. Very close to the snow monkey park.
Cons: Really, everything was perfect. I am not comfortable on a futon but otherwise it was great.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff is extremely friendly, and almost everyone can speak a bit of English, which makes everything much more relaxed, mainly because upon arrival you will plan your stay together with them in regards of dinner and breakfast time, as well as, the reservation of the private bath.
Cons: I have nothing negative to say about this hotel.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff at the restaurant were excellent and the all staff in general were fantastic If you are going to see the Snow Monkey park, then there is no better location
Cons: Booking.com said that we allowed for a room that suits 4 people. But the hotel only had 2 adults on the reservation so we ended up having to pay for an extra Futon and kids meals
4.5 Okay
Pros: It's near the entrance to snow monkey park but...from the entrance to the monkey sanctuary area is an upslope windy pathway...
Cons: The manager provided wrong info that we can't bring a stroller for our child. When we were at the park, almost everyone with a child had a stroller. It was a punishing walk into the sanctuary area taking turns to carry our child. We requested for dinner on the first day of arrival during booking, but after traveling for a whole day from overseas and navigated through the complex train lines from Tokyo to Nagano and then from Nagano to Senjukaku, on checking in, a staff insisted for 30mins that we will have to find dinner elsewhere. Shocking! And the outdoor onsen was closed in preparation for a VIP's visit the next day. However we were told that it was closed for winter. During reservation we booked a room for a family of 3, however the amenities and bed in the room was for 2. When we asked, the hotel insisted that we have to pay extra. Not that it would cost a lot more, but for a hotel that prides itself in serving the emperor, it did not conduct itself with some class.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay at Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku!! Definitely it was the perfect choice to celebrate our honeymoon! The hotel provides not only luxurious, but at the same time very cozy expirience. We’ve received a very personalize service, we also were given the Japanese yukatas to go everywhere in the hotel, which made our stay even more authentic. The staff of the Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukaku was very welcoming and incredibly attentive, we couldn’t desire more! Moreover, the room they offered for our honeymoon was terrific!! It was enormous and had 2 private onsens and fascinating view. Thank you very much for that unforgettable experience, we will always remember it!!! And we hope we can come back soon!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was absolutely perfect ! Trying to please the customers was their clear goal. Fantastic service !

Pros: The onsen, the hospitality was amazing... so great!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All are my favorite, staff & All facilities

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The host Sayaka-san and her mother were very accommodating. Excellent hosts and they speak very good English which meant communication is not an issue. The Ryokan is located within 5-8 minutes walk from several eating places - the host will introduce you which restaurants to go to if you ask. Rooms are very large and well appointed. There are three onsen (hot spring) on the property, one for men, one for women and one private which you need to make an appointment for. The private bath can be reserved for half an hour at a time starting from like 1800hrs onwards till 2359hrs. The location is quite central to several attractions like the SORA Terrace, Snow Monkey Park. Free parking is also available at this Ryokan. You will need to drive to this location. The whole property gives you a very homely feel - well decorated and spotless. Sayaka-san and her mother will give you all the recommendations about the attractions near the area so don't be afraid to ask.
Cons: The only request I would say is to have in-room bathroom which was not available.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Loved the outdoor shower and spa
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Overall ryokan experience was great. Amazing Japanese breakfast. Onsens were great. Checkin was great, we were made to feel very welcome- a lot of info is given upon arrival though and I wonder if there is more streamlined way to deliver it,, when you are a tired traveller, yet still make it a personable experience..
Cons: Laminated bus times at the back of the shuttle car- they are outdated. There were times bus departed from Bus stop A and B to go to Yudanaka station (after the snow monkey park) but they were wrong as we later checked the timetable the info center had given us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing and romantic retreat! My partner proposed here and when the staff found out they were all congratulating us and gifted us too!! I booked an private onsen in my room but I don't think it's needed cos there's EIGHT onsens with in the hotel!!! And there's 3 private ones you can book for the night, so you can save a bit of money without having onsen in the room. The service was amazing from start to the end, guiding us through the hotel and facilities and our traditional room. Dinner and breakfast is a must! Exceeded our expectations! This hotel gives you the key to visit the town's onsens as well and we sure did visit most!! This place is onsen galore, I stayed only one night wish we stayed longer! Place is very clean and comfortable! And because we were driving they made us some food snack for the road when we checked out! Simply amazing!! Its value as dinner alone if you were to eat something similar outside can cost $150 pp. 2 people that's already $300aud. So to stay in such place plus dinner plus breakfast... Its worth staying!! There's a cute Frenchie behind the checkout desk!! Highly recommend Thank you so much !!
Cons: Too many onsens to try hahaha spoilt for choice
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything especially the staff’s hospitality :)

Pros: The staff was absolutely excellent. Kind, helpfull and attentive. They were amazing as hosts and as waiters in their own restaurant and did a good job of informing us at the beginning of our stay. Our whole family is so delighted that we found this place.
6.8 Good
Pros: Staff were helpful.
Cons: Balcony onsen is too rough ... felt more like pumice-stone/ sandpaper. Didn’t enjoy the onsen. Arrived for our dinner reservation to be told that we had booked for an hour later. Returned to our room where staff were preparing the bedding...as we were to be at dinner ( as their understanding).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly, helpful, and gracious, every person at the hotel went above and beyond to welcome us to our first ryokan experience. And the food! Delicious and beautiful. The town is perfect. Pros: The staff are very friendly and the inn itself is wonderful. The best experience we've had so far in Japan. I highly recommend this place if you want some calmness surrounded by mountains. Oh and you get a private onsen to yourself (doesn't matter which room you book). That was a wonderful surprise.
Cons: Everything was perfect!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We love the family-run ryokan, it was a little run down but still very clean. We enjoyed two of their three onsens, we were able to use them privately. The outdoor onsen was beautiful with greenery around but extremely very hot, but we managed to get in for a while. The onsens are also tattoo-friendly, which was absolutely note-worthy. The location was great, just 5 mins walking from the station, and in the evening we enjoyed the freshness and stillness of the surroundings. The owner gave us fresh apples on our way checking out.
Cons: Nothing! We only wished we spent more time.

Pros: Staying here was one of the highlights of our 10-day trip to Japan. The private onsens are lovely. The public onsen is great, as well - it's outdoor with a lovely waterfall and good temperature. I would absolutely recommend having dinner during your stay. Breakfast was delicious, as well. Located a 5-minute walk from the Yudanaka station. The owner drove us to the Monkey Park free of charge and kept our bags after checking out.
Cons: Use of the public onsen is limited to 3 hours a day (7:00-10:00 pm when we were there) for women.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great character traditional ryokvan where the hospitality is wonderful. Amazing food with traditional Japanese dishes for dinner and breakfast. Thank you for a great stay
5.5 Okay
Pros: Sorry - it was very ordinary in every regard
Cons: This ryokan was a major disappointment and the worst value / quality we have experienced in our private tour of Japan - totally unlike the upbeat reviews and the attractive website. Everything was mediocre except the price which was extremely high for such mediocre quality. Four star prices for a one star facility
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The old man was very kind to us and drove us up to monkey mountain himself.
Cons: Learn your Japanese before going here :]
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The location was super close to the station. Easy stroll down the tiny village. Very quite and clean Ryokan.
Cons: We arrived at 3pm and did not receive a proper orientation for the onsen. We didn't know where to go in the morning for our breakfast, or where each of the onsen were.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was nice and homely, the staff was very welcoming.

Pros: The staff were lovely, they did everything to look after us and they were all really nice. The baths were lovely and the view from the room was beautiful
Cons: Nothing, our stay there was perfect, the only thing we didn't like was the walk back up the hill from the station
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our room was beautiful, traditional and overlooked a pond with koi carp. The hotel was relaxed and quirky, a highlight of our trip. We were driven to the monkey park and station - they were very organised in every way. Great value for money.
Cons: All good
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice owners and management. The team offered to store and take my luggage to my departure point, I am very grateful to them. They really take care of their guest
Cons: The clothes baskets in the ofuro was a little dusty.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Lovely couple and a hospitable stay at a traditional hotel. Everything was wonderful and I recommend highly. The owners went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and memorable.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely people, great food, fantastic onsen
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast, hot onsens, super comfy bed and kind owners looking to help you with whatever you need.
Cons: Property a little tired but the positives made up for this.
7.5 Good
Pros: Loved the traditional feel of it! Our room had big windows fronting the garden which made everything feel very zen. Also loved that we had to chance to book a room with tatami area, but also with two proper beds. This way there is no sacrifice whatsoever, and we still got the full tatami experience. Also lovely people catering to all our needs, and giving us a ride to the Monkey Park in the morning.
Cons: Maybe we were unlucky, but the hotel was empty when we were staying there. And it's quite a big building so it felt a bit deserted. Or we were lucky and got full attention of the staff. It just depends how you see it ;)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Really nice and spacious room. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The family who run the ryokan were wonderful. They were very helpful, friendly and accommodating. The mother was a wonderful cook and we had a fantastic breakfast on both mornings, the father dropped us up to the snow monkeys entrance and without us knowing organised for his friend who worked there to let him know when we returned so he could drive us back. Their adult daughter takes care of meeting you on arrival and answering your queries. We stayed in traditional rooms which were very spacious, comfortable and clean. The accommodation is a 10 - 15 minute walk from the station but they will drop you back to the staion.
Cons: The only problem for me was I am bigger in size so my hip and shoulder were touching the floor through the traditional mattress. However they had additional ones in the cupboards which solved that problem
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Run by a family, very sweet people, will do everything for you. Basic but great place to stay, Japanese style room, comfortabel. A bit out dated but clean and everything is there

Pros: Great location. Close to the snow monkey park. You can easily walk to many restaurants and the train station. Lovely onsen, but it is very hot. We stayed in a room with the mats on the floor and it was very comfortable. The room was very large. The bathroom had two sinks and was quite large as well. We also enjoyed the multi-course dinner at the restaurant. It was a wonderful experience and the food was very good. Very nice welcome drink and they had happy hour drinks in the afternoon. Staff was very nice and helpful. It is a great place to stay for two nights while exploring the snow monkey park.
Cons: Nothing.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a very well located accommodation. Well suited for a family of 3. Nice personeel and a very Nice bonus is the exclusieve entrance to an onsen nearby. I would recommend this place when staking in shibu onsen. If you are on a lookout for a place that is reasonably prices.
Cons: Nothing really.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location was very convenient: just outside from Keisei Skyliner Station. The staff were very friendly.
Cons: The rooms were dated, and decoration was poor. The bathroom shower was difficult to use and flooded the floor. The aircon did not work well and we were hot!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely staff who picked us up from train station. let us store luggage and organised our return with taxi to the airport. They also organised a private spa star gazing experience for me and my partner as well as a shuttle service to the monkey park. Great map and info on the town provided and the bar/restaurant felt like an inviting space to meet and talk with people. Lovely Japanese style room with robes provided that we enjoyed walking around the town in to take in all 9 local onsen. Had very comfortable sleep. Would love to come back when a bit cooler to really enjoy the onsen experience and explore the greater area!

Cons: food was normal
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Overall the hotel met our expectations. the rooms were spacious and the food (breakfast) excellent and varied. the onsen was well appointed. Staff were very helpful, we would stay again.
Cons: Yudanaka is a very quiet town with few facilities and a relatively poor choice of restaurants, though we did enjoy some very well priced and tasty food. Outside the ski season it has little appeal except as a base to see the snow monkeys. Unless you are a big Onsen fan two nights would be ample in the place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We got a lovely Japanese style room that was hugely spacious - could have accommodation 4 people if needed and had a view of the mountains. Staff were very welcoming and made sure we were well looked after. Facilities were clean. The included breakfast set is amazing - we had the Japanese kaiseki style which came with about 10 assorted dishes! You can book a private session on the hotel's rooftop onsen for 2150yen which is well worth it. Located only 2-3 minutes walk from the train station. Tip: you can rent electric bikes from the public onsen located behind the train station for a quick day trip down the road to Shibu onsen (must be returned by 4pm)
10.0 Excellent

Cons: Nothing
5.8 Okay
Pros: Good location short walk to the Yamanuka station. Clean room although the air in the room was not great.

Cons: Nothing

Pros: The staff were wonderful & very helpful. The room was very spacious with mountain view. The rooftop baths was incredible. Breakfast was great value for money with the option of Japanese or Western style.

Pros: Mountain View from the room and from the lovely rooftop Onsen. Karaoke room was fun and private dinner/breakfast rooms were perfect for us and our small children. Loved lounging around in yukatas in the large room. Very handy being close to train station.

Pros: The place was incredibly accommodating from the moment we arrived at Yudanaka Station. I really have no complaints. The staff were super friendly and the public baths were gorgeous - Much better than the neighbouring Shibu Onsen which all share 9 onsens which are like small boxes compared to the expansive ones that we had.
Cons: NOTHING

Cons: Ladies Onsen a little bit cool Men’s hot spring too hot
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There’s really nothing to say, if you are reading this review, Book it, the best experience I’ve ever had with a host.
Cons: The fact that Ichiro-san set the bar so high, every other place I stay at now will not come close
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Warm comfortable large room with a nice view to the mountains. Mr Yumoto is a great host. He accommodated our early arrival allowing us to check in early. He kindly drove us to the Monkey Park and offered to pick us up. We took the option of a nice walk back to our accommodation with a detailed map and directions given to us by Mr Yumoto. We were also given the option of using the onsen as a couple which was a great experience. Mr Yumoto has wealth of tourist information about the surrounding area and towns nearby.
Cons: Nothing really except no lift.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This property is very centrally located in the little town. We found it so sweet that Mr Yamuto personally drove us to the Monkey Park. He then gave us a phone number and we were able to use the gift shop phone to ask him to come pick us up! Monkey Park is a must see :) His wife made us a delicious Japanese style breakfast one morning for a very reasonable price. They offered us helpful hints about how to enjoy the area. Also, bonus! They have a little outdoor bath that sits atop a big hilltop, with beautiful mountain views. It's a 3 minute walk from the hotel accommodation. We were able to rent it privately for 45 minutes. It was absolutely fabulous!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was amazing right from the time he collected us from the train station. He was very informative and gave us maps for the few days of travel. He recommended a great restaurant for dinner which was great value and amazing food. He took us to monkey park gave us gum boots as the track was very wet as the snow was melting. Offered to collect us but we wanted to walk back down as it was a beautiful day. We didn’t have breakfast as our train was leaving at 7am and he happily took us to the train station. We were able to book the inside private Onsen which was just lovely. Would definitely recommend and stay again if ever back in the area. He gave us a souvenir each a snow monkey tag for our luggage.
Cons: Futons are a bit hard but we are not used to sleeping on them.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were lovely & a good size. The futons were very comfortable with good sheets & dunas. The onsen was good & hot & available 24/7. There is also an outdoor onsen which we didn't discover due to our poor understanding as it was explained to us in pretty good English. We were able to use the washing machine & powder at no charge. The owners were delightful & very helpful & drove us up to the snow monkey park which was fabulous!! It is a very beautiful area & well worth a visit. I would stay again.
Cons: The hotel was old & a bit tired but the rooms were lovely & comfortable & very clean, as was the lavatory on our floor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A lovely Ryokan run by a lovely helpful family. Large comfortable rooms . We were also driven to the Monkey Park and taken to the station free of charge. The breakfasts were plentiful and delicious. I left my phone in the room when leaving for the train. The owner retrieved it for me when I rang him and he delivered it down to the railway station to give to me. Wonderful kind man.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful, family run ryokan, just a stone's throw away from the snow monkey park. Easily accessible too which I had been worried about (theres a train from Nagano that stops a 5 minute walk away). Our hosts were incredibly warm & accommodating, the traditional Japanese dining (both breakfast and dinner) was extravagant and the choice of 4 different onsens is more than anyone could ask for (we only managed to visit 2...). Couldn't recommend it highly enough!
Cons: No complaints.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Food at their sister restaurant and at breakfast was amazing. Only the husband speaks English but he drove me to the monkey park and the station when I left. Got me the train timetables for me to organized my trip. Great service. Location is good. U can walk to Shibu Onsen and I walked back from the snow monkey park.
Cons: Ryokan experience so the bed and pillow are really hard and not comfortable to my taste. It was winter and I was really hot at night and sweated.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kiyohei was so helpful. He took me and picked me up at the Snow Monkey Park as well as to Shibu Onsen to find lunch. Then he was able to drop off at the train station. The Kaiseki dinners at Yoroduya were amazing. Beautiful and filling. I strongly suggest to take advantage of the free Onsen at Yoroduya. It is fantastic.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host's level of hospitality. They were so, so helpful with everything.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were greeted with hot traditional tea, and were guided around the fantastic room and hot spring baths at the ryokan. The ryokan staff were exceptionally attentive, and helped guide us around the towns.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality of the staff is excellent!! The rooms are comfortable and have great garden view. The ryokan offers multiple nice options for Onsen.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The services provided by the owner(husband and wife) was excellent.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is hospitality perfection. We were well taken care of in every aspect and pleasantly surprised when the dinner was in a private dining space to ourselves at their sister hotel a few houses down. We had dinner directly after enjoying the gorgeous outdoor onsen. The ryokan manager was so kind to take us to a night trip to the neighboring historic onsen town of Shibu to enjoy the romantic uplighting on the historic architecture. He also took us to the snow monkey park and then directly to the train station. He was always on time and gave us excellent recommendations on how to maximize our stay. Will come back again!
7.5 Good
Pros: Great experience in a small Ryokan, seemed more Japanese than the larger ones we stayed at. Very personal, only the host and I think two assistants. The onsen there is ok, but you can also go to the large onsen at a very old, but grand hotel with a large and nice onsen. This is where you will also have dinner in a personal dining room. They will shuttle you to and from the large hotel, but it is nice to walk the short distance back to your Ryokan after dinner.
Cons: This is a very small ryokan, but if you want a real Japanese experience this is it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kamei no Yu is different than other onsen resort. They care about their guests, and they take care of us very well. They made me a cup of tea and treat upon check-in, and they took the time to explain their amenities. In addition, they also offer free shuttle services to some associated onsens, snow monkey park, train station etc. Onsens and train station are not far away from Kamei no Yu. But in the snowing winter season, it is very nice and warm to have that shuttle services. Kamei no Yu is definately a place to chillax. If you are looking for a place for relaxation, a peaceful place for retreat, a place for some quiet moments to cool down yourself from daily busy schedules. I highly recommend Kamei no Yu, this is the place to go! The staff are super helpful and friendly. They offer excellent hospitality. I would definately come back next time.
Cons: I like everything that Kamei no Yu offers. I cannot think of any dislikes. I only wish that they were not so fully booked, so that I could stay more than a night over there.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Hosts were very friendly and accommodating. They even offered us a ride to the monkey park (3 minute drive) and to Yudanaka station the day we departed (8 minute drive). The room was very large, traditional ryokan style. The onsen was lovely. It was a short walk to some very delicious restaurants, but the hosts do provide meals if you choose to pay for them.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The lady was so nice!!! The minshuku was great, traditional and welcoming.
Cons: It was not super comfortable to sleep on futons but it’s normal for us gaijin!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The lovely owners and the distance to the Monkey park. Very close by, you can walk but the owner will bring you. He also picked us up and dropped us at the station (for free). The dinner was really fantastic! The breakfast too, but realize it's a real Japanese breakfast ;)
Cons: That we couldn't use the 9 public Onsen in Shibu Onsen. We have read online that you can use them when you stay in ryokan in Shibu Onsen. We didn't read anything about it in the summery of the hotel or the reviews (so maybe we could have known), but this was a little disappointment for us and want to let the next visitors know via this review. You can use the nice onsen in the Ryokan and number 9 in the centre of Shibu. (a 10 minutes walk)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing hosts! The friendliest owners on the planet. Free pickup and drop off to the train station, and amazing dinner and outdoor Onsen. Clean and comfortable rooms with an easy 10min walk to Shibu Onsen. We had the most wonderful time at this place, highly recommend the food and if you can’t stay you should definitely come and use the Onsen! Owners don’t speak much English but they have a translation booklet with everything you need to know. Wish we could have stayed forever!
Cons: Nothing. It was absolutely perfect.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: great home cooked meals. we love the home feeling
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The breakfasts and evening meals were absolutely excellent, not to mention huge! The hosts were amazingly friendly and helpful, despite not speaking English. The hot spring is also very nice and relaxing.
Cons: It is a little walk from Shiba Onsen, but not too far. We didn't realise that Wednesday is early closing/holiday for many of the restaurants in the town, so had problems finding anywhere to eat/drink. If you can plan your visit to avoid Wednesday, I'd do that.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were very helpful, picked us from station, drove us to the money park then dropped us off at the station the next day. The dinner was excellent also the breakfast !
Cons: Nothing. But be aware that they only take cash .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved everything about our stay here! The owners of the ryokan were extremely welcoming. The onsen was in great conditions and everything was very clean. The food that we had at the inn was already delicious and a good price. They gladly gave us a ride to the inn when we arrived as well as to the snow monkey park. Which was at a very closed distance to the Ryokan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A highlight of our trip. The owners are outstandingly friendly and helpful. We took a taxi to Minshuku Miyama after visiting the snow monkeys by bus, but the owners said they would have picked us up if we asked. The hotel is only 5 minutes from where the bus drops you for the snow monkeys so if we planned better we could have just walked from there. The owners do not speak English but are well prepared to communicate to non-Japanese guests, with a Flipboard of instructions. First we were offered slippers and then shown the dining room and Onsen, then led to our room where our luggage was already waiting for us. The room was very large and comfortable, with a beautiful view of the mountains. Once settled we changed into our yukatas and headed down to the Onsen. In separate male and female areas we showered then relaxed in the Onsen, it’s very hot, ten minutes is enough. After this we relaxed a little before heading down for dinner. Dinner is 1620 JPY per person and should be ordered the day before. We forgot but it was no problem to order that morning. The dinner is amazing, great value - 8 different courses with rice and green tea. Breakfast was also excellent, more than we could eat. Ham, omelette, mackerel, miso soup and more... The owners dropped us back at the station in plenty of time for or train. Outstanding ryokan and a great experience. Wish we had longer here.
Cons: Rooms were a bit hot, but that’s all, nothing really bad to say.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The couple who run the place are adorable! They are very accommodating and try to make your stay the best ever. We stayed for 2 nights and had 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner, which were all delicious. The hosts were considerate of me not eating meat. They showed us which other places we can dine at and picked us up from/to train station and took us to Monkey Park (which by the way was a total highlight - we didn’t agree with Lonely Planet comments one bit). The onsen was great, but best was to use it early or late hours when it is closed to public to get some personal time.
Cons: Besides Monkey Park and walking around the Shiba Onsen, there wasn’t much to do in May. Perhaps there could be hiking trails provided for further options.

Pros: The hotel is very well situated in the middle of all the ski fields. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. The Japanese food was five star and we ate like kings. The massage chairs were a godsend at the end of a days skiiing, as was the on-site Onsen. The western beds and rooms were very comfortable and overall, the hotel facilities were ideal for a week in the snow.

Pros: Practically ski in/out Easy ski holiday - all you need to do it get to the hotel, from there, the staff can arrange ski gear hire for you out of their basement for very competitive prices, provide discount lift coupons (to be exchanged at the lifts for a discount of about 20%), provide delicious healthy breakfast and dinners, comfortable rooms, great onsens and wonderful staff members behind it all. This has become our regular ski place in Japan and we always look forward to coming back, it truly is a care free holiday for us, and standards are always high.
Cons: The accomodation is dated and not what you would label luxurious but its clean, well taken care of and feels like a place the staff are very proud of. Its comfortable and personal, and much more memorable than the big hotels I've stayed at before...my husband would like to add - more dessert at dinner, they are delicious!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very clean. Great simple healthy Japanese style breakfast/dining. Booking included all onsens (the "private" onsen was not in-room, but can still use). Excellent service (good English, quick email turnaround, friendly and helpful staff, they even drove us to the bus stop on a very snowy day, which was just a block away)! Close to Hasuike bus stop. Basic ski/snowboard rentals available but also close to a rental shop. Had a small tuckshop, pingpong room, massage chairs, reading & computer area. Upon request, they helped us arrange delivery of our equipment to the airport (need to pay extra) so we could carry less on our way to Tokyo...
Cons: If you're looking for a ski-in/out hotel then you need to know this hotel is not exactly beside a chair lift. You'll need to walk a few hundred meters and ski down a slope to reach Giant chairlifts. Wasn't a problem for us though.
7.5 Good
Pros: Good Japanese breakfast and dinner. I stayed four nights, no repetition. Staffs are gentle and helpful. Good for skiing holidays.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are incredible. So sweet, they go above and beyond. Even though the hotel is just a 2 minute walk from the bus stop, the owner came in the van to pick us up so we didn't have to carry our bags - so kind of him. I really can't thank the staff enough, they made our stay very memorable! The food is also fantastic and of an extremely high standard. We tried so many new and different things at breakfast and dinner which we loved. The outdoor onsen is great too.
Cons: The lighting in our room could have been a bit softer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was spacious, enjoyed massage chair in room & loved the free private onsen. Dinner was excellent . All staff were very helpful and friendly. Bus dropped us off & picked us up at the hotel door and there was a free ski shuttle bus only 80 meters away.
Cons: Nothing.
