Compact SUV

KAYAK
We had our rental booked the Alamo. On arrival, we were told that due to an issue they didn’t have a car for us (we had requested a mid size SUV - KIA sportage or similar and while we were waiting we saw another customer from Alamo get one). They said that since they didn’t have one they are working with their partners to honor our rate and give us a similar car. I expected a similarly well renowned company - enterprise, budget, hertz. Instead they took us over to one of the local car rentals and got us a SUV with 103K miles on it, poor car alignment, and the check engine light on “which was the case for all the cars”. Ultimately the car served it’s purpose but that was a disappointing experience and the car we got was definitely not worth the price we paid.

Compact SUV

KAYAK
The Budget person (Catherine) who attended to us was excellent, super nice, super helpful, super responsive, but the car (license # C-62737) was a true lemon 👎. Nothing to do with Catherine but believe or not, it was missing 3 (yes three!) quarts of engine oil from the start + dashboard emergency light never came on for that… We’d have never known and probably blown the engine if we hadn’t checked the level an hour after picking up the car. Also engine was very weak and loud (forget chatting on the road and very slow on hills); electric windows were on & off haphazardly, etc etc. In one sentence: BEWARE! this car should never have been rented out.

Car had NO A/C - In Belize - when it's 110 Deg F. Remote Sensor system left me stranded for 10 min for some reason. Had to add 3 cans of refrigerant to A/C.

Cons:

The agency we originally made a reservation through did not have a car available when we arrived. They were kind in asking other agencies if they could assist us, but the vehicle we managed to secure was in very very poor shape mechanically. The trip across the country for the nearly two weeks was very difficult with such an unreliable and dangerously maintained vehicle. It was an adventure.
