Just go with Alamo.... you pay a little more but its fast, easy, and the folks were so kind and helpful!
MarkNov 2024
Alamo is fine. Check Tire Pressure Sytem readings before you leave garage. Had I done so - i could have swapped vehicles.
Verified travelerNov 2024
Prefer full size car. Bridges are very expensive and gas is too! Tons of fast drivers on 101.
Verified travelerJun 2024
pre-plan your driving routes to know if you will need a toll pass or not; we could've gotten away without using one, and could've saved money
Verified travelerApr 2024
Make sure you really need a vehicle because San Francisco is not the easiest to navigate.
Verified travelerMay 2024
Small the better given the expensive fuel price in California

We had a ball. Anyone concerned about "handling" a Mustang convertible, forget about it. It was a snap for both of us 70+'s!
Verified travelerSep 2023
Choose Fox! Go offsite! It’s a good value and not difficult to get to. Parking in San Francisco on the other hand…
NikhitaSep 2023
Do not get a rental car when staying in San Francisco, it’s not necessary. We picked up a rental car in SF to drive outside of the city. When driving in SF, be careful with all the hills. Do not park in the street because of the high risk of car break-ins.
RobertSep 2023
Call and confirm if the drop off location actually accepts drop offs (sounds crazy, I know) but ours did not.
Verified travelerSep 2023
We did not drive in San Francisco. We literally picked up the car on the way out of town.
Verified travelerSep 2023
You don’t need it if you’re going to be only in San Francisco and immediate vicinity.

I left SF immediately. I've learned when staying in SF to use public transposition.

NicoleAug 2023
You can pay tolls later. Electric cars are easy and cheaper to fuel.

Get out of San Francisco and head down the pacific coast highway

If you’re going across the toll bridges, sign up for a bayareafastrak license plate account to pay your tolls. https://www.bayareafastrak.org/en/tolls/license-plate.shtml

Take BART if you can or Muni. Nice to have a car if your moving more than 5 people but parking can get expensive.

In San Francisco? Don’t park on the street.
JasonJun 2023
Leave nothing in your car. Stealing of personal items (bags, backpacks) is very common in SF.
JamesMay 2023
Give extra travel time for getting over the bridges, in case of traffic.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Rent a car only if you are driving out of San Francisco. Within San Francisco, parking is difficult and extremely expensive. "Smash and grab" (where criminals smash the car windscreen and/or windows to get to contents inside the car) is a common occurence, even when there are no valuables in the car that is visible from the outside.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in San Francisco

  • There are a few tips and rules you’ll want to keep in mind before driving your car rentals in San Francisco. Traffic can get congested in the city, so sometimes the most direct route is not the best option, map it out before driving and preferably avoid Market Street. There are plenty of one-way roads or lanes reserved for buses, so keep your eyes peeled for the traffic signs. In San Francisco, there’s an unspoken rule to stop at a yellow light instead of driving through it. San Franciscans also love to ride bikes and use them to commute so always be aware of your surroundings.
  • While driving around the city of San Francisco can be challenging due to its steep hills and crowded streets, renting a car is a convenient option for travelers who want to explore destinations outside the city. Driving is the best way to get to nearby places that are a must in every itinerary, such as the Bay Area, Muir Woods, and Sausalito. For an unforgettable wine tasting experience, drive to Napa Valley, which is only about 50 miles away from San Francisco.
  • San Francisco is known for its steep hills, and the downtown area is filled with packed roads, one-way streets, and expensive parking, so you might want to avoid driving in that area. When parking on one of the city's hills, make sure to turn the wheels towards the curb when the car is facing downhill, and turn them away from the curb when the car is facing uphill -- and don't forget to use your parking brake.
  • San Francisco is one of the worst cities in the United States when it comes to traffic congestion. Rush hours can easily add one or more hours to your travel time, so take that into consideration and avoid driving into or out of the city between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m.and 7:00 p.m. Because of its geographical features, San Francisco can get quite foggy and windy, so make sure you take extra precautions while driving if the weather conditions aren't great.
  • All the big car rental agencies can be found at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Car Rental Center, which is accessible from all the airport terminals by taking the AirTrain Blue Line service. AirTrain stations are located in all the terminals at the airport. There is also a free shuttle service from the SFO Rental Car Center to other off-site rental car agencies.
  • To drop off your San Francisco car rentals at the airport before departing, you’ll be leaving them in the same location as pick-up. The San Francisco Airport Rental Car Center is not inside the airport terminals, but right off 101 Highway. Drop off your rental car in the designated agency area of the lot. From there, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has the AirTrain connecting the Rental Car Center with the different airport terminals as well as the parking garages and Airport Hotel. The AirTrain Blue Line station is right out front. The train operates 24 hours throughout the day with frequent service to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
  • There are several toll roads and bridges in and around San Francisco and the Bay Area that drivers may encounter, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, and other regional toll roads. Before driving your cheap car rentals in San Francisco, you want to know where they are and how to pay them. The two closest toll roads in and out of the city are toll bridges. If you’re driving your car rentals in San Francisco across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, you will need to pay the toll. Some rental agencies offer plans covering most toll road types. If not, there is a one-time payment option through FasTrak. This is also the case when you wish to cross the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in San Francisco for $43 or less
  • Book your rental car in San Francisco at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate rental cars in San Francisco are around 19% cheaper than other car types, on average

Agent was great at desk. When we got to car pick up we were offered an Audi SUV. Even though it was only a year old it was quite used. Also very uncomfortable seats to drive in. We drove a lot and not suitable for it. Also no charger for phones unless you had an older one. Radio not that wonderful either. Had rented and paid for a luxury vehicle that one had it in name only. Not pleased.

I was not given a damage slip or told to look at the damage ahead of time on my rental car. I was told (through an email) that a scratch was there that had not been there before my rental. I drove the car the entire time with the exception of valets at my hotel and did not cause damage. Because I did not get to inspect it and was not given a form to do so, I do not have evidence that something happened under my watch and just have to take their word. I also would have liked them to tell me when I turned the car in, as I did not have a chance to see what they are saying I did. It all feels pretty unfair. This could have been resolved if they had given me a damage form ahead of time.

I didn't receive the car I originally ordered. They were fast though!

Horrible . We booked online after our United flight was cancelled. We were greeted by an Avis rep saying " I'm going home and we have no cars" . So we went to the next rep after standing in another line- he said the only cars were electric... not what we booked and wouldn't work for the 300 mile drive we were going to take. It was after midnight. Finally , he forced us to upgrade by asking for more money and gave us a car. The lot was full of cars when we went outside to leave. He lied to us and gave us an inferior car for more money

The car had worn out tires, almost flat. Also, the car experienced carplay/android auto connection issues.

Standard SUV

We were misled into taking an EV even though we had booked a gasoline car. And this is inspite of them knowing we would be traveling from SF to LA as car drop was at LA. We also pointed out our route including Yosemite. They told us we needn't worry as the car goes from 0-80% charging in 15 min on a fast charger. We struggled across the 7 days as charging was slow and the range on full charge was only 140 miles on the Subaru. Very unethical and misleading team at this branch.
